This, of course, means that we are all another year older and that time which has passed can never again be relived by any one of us. Although many students will regret that they have not worked harder, I believe, by and large, we can look back with pride upon the . past year's record. In this annual, the year-book staff is giving you and our public a record of our accomplishments in picture and in writing. It isn't so much the amount of glory our high school has won the past year that really counts, but rather the amount of education and growth that has resulted in each one of our students. As this book shows, our students have taken part in a multiplicity of activities. Each one of these has contributed greatly to the overall growth of each participant. It is my hope that the work in the classroom, as well as the work on activities in the extra-curricular program, has made a real contribu- tion to your education and your citizenship for our community, the state and the nation. Their work has consisted of much vocalizing and tone blend- ing, which is a necessity for a choir singing both a capella and accompanied music. Because of a lack of tenors and first basses, much detailed work of switching parts was done to make a balanced group. The three big events of the year were: fly Christmas Tree Concert, QZQ District Music Festival, and QQ a chartered bus trip to the Twin Cities to witness a musical event. lst Row: Mrs. Hughes, P. The team was elected by football coaches in the area and Tom won the left tackle berth. Tom was further re- warded by being picked for honorable mention on the All-State team composed of players from the entire state. This year was Tom's third at tackle, but midway through the season, he was switched to fullback because of the team's many injuries. Al- though'he lacked experience, he filled the job well, and by the end of the season, he became a marked man in the Barron backfield. He still played tackle on defense and his 210 pounds held up more than his share of the line. TOM KLINKENBERG Tackle DAVE MCDONALD Emi DENIS KIRKMAN EUGENE ELKIN Center Tackle BE R GRIDDER BARRON: 0 RICE LAKE: 7 The Bears dropped their first home game of the season to the Warriors from Rice Lake in a hard-fought contest. It was an even-fought battle for three of the four periods, but in the third stanza, the Bears suffered a defensive lapse. Hard running by Warrior backs shoved across a score. BARRON: 6 SPOONER: 25 Barron traveled to Spooner for their second game only to be beaten by a strong Railroader eleven. The first half was nearly even, but an 80 yard punt return in the closing minutes of the second quarter broke the game wide open. The only moment of glory for the Bears was when Bob Nelson passed to Dean McManus on the five who scampered over for the first touchdown of the season for the Maroon and Gold. The try for the extra point failed. BARRON: 0 CHIPPEWA MCDONELL: 34 It was a long trip to Chippewa and a much longer one home as the Bears were out-classed, out-fought, and out-run by a veteran McDonell club. The home team took control of the game at the opening gun and the Bears never seriously threatened. BARRON: 0 BLOOMER: 21 The Bears played one of their best games of the year against a strong Bloomer team and made the Heart-O'-North conference leaders work for every point they got. The score didn't show the closeness of the game. It was 7 to 0 until the final five minutes when the Blackhawks completed two long passes which went for touchdowns. Barron's big threat came right before the end of the half, when a pass from Bob Nelson to Tom Klinkenberg netted 20 yards and the big fullback carried the ball for thirty more yards to the Bloomer 30 yard line before being stopped. Time ran out before another play could be called. JOE AY REA RUSSELL HARTZE LL Tackle End .l L .raM9M MERLIN GARDNER BOB THORSBAKKEN H al fback Emi BARRON: 27 CUMBERLAND: 20 Barron finally came through with a win in conference play as they beat the Beavers with their best scoring effort of the season. Bob Nelson, Tom Klinken- berg, and Dean McManus ran for scores for the Bears and tackle Joe Ayrea re- covered a fumble for the fourth counter. Another beautiful 70 yard run by Captain McManus was called back by a clipping penalty. Cumberland scored on the Bears three times, making the game close until the final gun. Their big threat was passes to their end, Youngberg. BARRON: 6 Hayward: 12 Homecoming proved to be a bad night for the Bears as the Hurricanes from Hayward outlasted them for the win. Klinkenberg scored first on a plunge from the one yard line set up by a 34 yard dash by McManus. Hayward knotted the score up soon after the second half opened, and then with only a few minutes left they scored again. The Bears Came back, but time ran out with the ball on the Hayward 35 yard line. BARRON: 2 LADYSMITH: 5 The last conference game of the season was lost by the Bears not being able to deliver the scoring punch when it was needed. Several times they were within the Ladysmith 15 yard marker but could not shove the ball over. A brief lead was gained by the Bears when Dave Dimick tackled a Lumberjack halfback in the end zone. The fourth stanza proved the fatal time again when a pass interception and a roughing penalty put the ball on the Barron 18 yard stripe. After a series of downs, the ball lay on the one and the Bears put up a strong defense, but on the fourth down Ladysmith shoved the ball across for the Winning margin. BARRON: 13 LUCK: 0 The Barron Bears ended the season with a non-conference win over Luck on Halloween night. After Merlin Gardner and Bob Nelson scored in the first half, the game came to a standstill with each team exchanging punts for the rest of the game. Many of the underclassmen, or those who are returning next year, were given a chance to play and showed up very well. MARVIN WEBER BOB NELSON End Quarterback NORMAN HUBBARD Guard DEAN MCMANUS :Dean McManus, captain of the Bear football team, was considered by many as the best play- er on the team. Dean, also playing his third year on the team, was one of the best backs in the conference. Despite his lack of size the never weighed more than 145 pounds during the en- tire seasonj, he was the Bear's spark on offense and an excellent halfback on defense. Dean was a real triple threat and could run, kick and pass with equal effectiveness. His ability as an all- around back has not been seen at Barron high in a long time. They then traveled to Ladysmith and were beaten 54- 45. Bob Nelson plunked in 21 points. ' Rice Lake came to Barron on November 25 and went home on the short end of a 52-37 score. Decem- ber 5, the boys toppled Cumberland 52-48. joel Edson hit 19 points against the Warriors, while 'Dean Mc- Manus fired in 13 in the win over Cumberland. Bloomer was the scene of the next battle, where the Maroons just about upset the Blackhawks. The final score was 55-50. Edson again scored 19 points. Cameron visited Barron and in a very uneven ball game the Bears won, 50-36. The Barron boys then walloped New Richmond, 60-40 and in the best team-scoring effort, beat Spooner, 66-47. Edson had 17 and 23, but in the Spooner game other Bears hit double figures. Nelson with 12, Clemens with 14, and Eugene with 11. Night before lbe game. Coach Ed. Larsen, who scored 37 points for the Hawyard five, calmly put two free throws in after the gun had sounded. Nelson hit 13 to lead the Bear's scoring. The Lumberjacks from Ladysmith visited Barron on january 23. They spurred to a first quarter lead, then coasted the rest of the way. The final score was 64-52 with Edson and McManus scoring 14 points each. The Barron outfit then journeyed up to Rice Lake to play their long arch rivals. Rice Lake was behind the first half by 17 points, but fought back and just about upset the Barron five. The final scoring was 47-43 with Nelson and Clemens plunking through 8 points each to lead a balanced scoring attack. Cumberland journeyed to Barron on January 30 only to be beaten soundly, 59-44. Edson and Nelson shared scoring honors with 13 markers apiece. Cameron played host to the Bears and gave them a tough battle for the first half, but in the third quarter, the visitors broke loose for 22 points. The outburst came after a rugged half-time. The final score was 57- 48 with Ne1son's 12 points heading a well-rounded at- tack. Bloomer was the next game and the Bears were really up for the battle. The Hawks forged a seven point lead at half-time and held it the rest of the way. The final score: 59-52 A stubborn Spooner club was the next foe for the Bears and they came to town ready to avenge an earlier defeat. Coach Bailey substituted for Coach Warwick, who was ill with rheumatic fever and missed his first game in several years. The Bears won 48-41 and Cle- mens led the team with 18 points. The last conference game and the last home game for eight seniors was played with the rough and ready Hayward Hurricanes. The game although close was never in doubt to anyone on the team for everyone went out with determination to win. The taller Hut- ricanes were out rebounded and the Bears with bal- anced scoring won 57 to 43. Three players hit double figures with Edson's 15 points centering the attack and Nelson and Clemens with 11 each rounding out the majority of scoring. fr ll 77 Row 1: B. Yraky, L. Cobb, B. Ckmens, S. The thinclads participated in six meets including the state track meet at the end of the season. They placed second in three of these meets, third in one and lost their only dual meet with Eau Claire Regis. Five boys placed either first or second in the Rice Lake Sectional and thus qualified for the state meet at Madison. They were: Vic Schleiss, Tom Klinkenberg Bob Bonner, and Don Meyers. Bonner, who ran the mile, Schleiss, in the dashes and Meyers in the 440 were the team's most consistent winners. This year's team had four returning lettermen from which to form a nucleus. Al- though this is fewer than in past years, Coach Fred Switzenberg is looking forward to another successful year. x x ' Y -yu Q, , lk 5 5 ,, J -in Lt -1- 4 .r-' '-l' ,+i1 I I l ,, Q I ., I l J ' 2 W If , -D A 4 ,1 X . ,,,,,,, - 0' j , e 'f C 5, ee- Barron's 1952 track team posing with Coach Fred Switzenberg after - the Rice Lake sectional. l. 65 Bank row: R. BATTER LIP. Barron, returning to baseball competition after a few years'absence, fielded a successful nine. In conference competition they finished with a three won and three lost record. On the mound the Bears had two experienced hurlers in Lea Halvorson and Gerald johnson and had help from Raymond Buxton. Johnson turned in two shutouts, one against Cameron and one against Rice Lake . The catching chores were divided between Eldon Lawrence and Robert Fra- ley and David Dimick held down first base until the tournament. Bob Nelson played second and was relieved by Dick Lucivansky. David Kurschner and David Ellefson finished out the infield. Kurschner got on base a lot and David Ellefson proved the long ball. In the outfield you would usually find Roger Hunt, Vic Schleiss, and Guy Ritchie. Dan Severude, who filled in anywhere in the outfield, was the batting star in the tournament game with Rice Lake by whacking out two doubles. With the dismissal of three key players the night before the tournament, Barron's team was weakened. With the line-up changed by Ellefson at first, Kurschner at third and Edson filling in at short the Bears beat Rice Lake and Cameron and then with hopes high got dumped by Frederic to finish their season. The Bears have quite a number of lettermen returning and hopes are high for this season. 1952 BASEBALL RESULTS Barron 7 Chetek 2 Barron 7 Hayward 8 B Barron l 9 Cumberland 6 Barron Barron 7 Rice Lake 0 Orton Barron 5 Cameron 3 Barron Barron I4 Bloomer 3 Barron 2 Ladysmith 5 f XX f r ,IQ As' 'f ia ,,qFl.,e A5019 5 P0 ' i A' I Q1 N5!f 5 ei:-- -.fig 'll' 'ffl W' 54 ' 'i ' nsi par . .if L 433 31 -534. any 21 'V H.
