ROSE SERRA ТТ TP P T L E THPT HA iH 31713) { т The Principal's job can be demanding as well as lonely. The buck literally stops here! It takes an authority figure, who is capable of displaying patience and fairness, mixed with perserverance, to endure at the helm of a school as large as Barringer. Our Principal Ms. Rose Serra, has devoted many years of her life to the education of our children. She began her career at Barringer as a math teacher. Then she moved up to department chairperson, vice principal and finally Principal, While being involved daily in decision making with faculty members, guidance personnel, and outside groups, Ms. Serra has always been approachable by the student body. Whether she was standing at the front door in the morning greeting the students, or talking on the public address system, Ms. Serra made her presence known with a cheerful “Соод Morning”! VICE PRINCIPALS - As the school year unfolds, a proportional rise occurs in the complexity and variety of administrative respon- sibilities. Shouldering the additional burdens, and as- suming an ever increasing role in school adminis- tration, are the vice principals. Each one supervises a certain phase of the work, thus dividing the tremen- dous task and assuring more efficient asministration in all areas. The V.P.'s are an essential aid to the principal, assisting her with her many duties as well as fulfilling their own jobs in the most efficient way possible. Edward Gadson Luis M. Lopez Clerks ч Janis Gary Nilsa Hernandez Vinnie Inga Sandy Reyes The secretaries in the main office and the guidance office have jobs that only highly skilled organizers can handle. Without them Bar- ringer could not function. Their jobs include doing all the corre- spondence, school records, cler- ical duties and of course answer- ing the numerous phone calls that the school receives daily. Guidance ар. Frank Antonnaci Pedro Sierra Alfonse DelGuercio Marta Martinez To assist each student to understand himself and plan for his future are the goals of the Guidance department. Besides scheduling of courses for graduation require- ments, counselors see students for help with personal, social, educational, and vocational matters. Scholarship competitions, summer programs such as Upward Bound, E.O.F. programs, and college acceptance in Pre-Med or Pre-Dental Financial Assistance Programs are all areas the Guidance department exposes our Angelina Ranieri Marvin Sholfmitz students to. Barringer is the only senior high school in Newark in which the Science department includes Electricity and Electronics among its courses. The Science department also offers Barringer students a wide selection of both college and non-college bound courses. The honors intergrated science program of- fers a two year unified study of Chemistry and Physics with unigue team teaching approach. Tutorial as- sistance is provided to all Science students. Stu- dents are trained for entry jobs such as secretaries, bookkeepers, typists, and clerks. Young people also learn to cope in society and in their own home by becoming familiar with real life situations: keeping a checkbook, buying insurance, keeping a budget, and filling out income tax returns. While the department prepares students to succeed and advance in business, the outstanding students are encouraged to go on to college and pursue professional careers in accounting, computer programming and teaching business edu- cation. This is one of the vital issues our social studies classes consider each day. Students learn to think, to interpret, and to apply knowledge to the solution of everyday human problems. Our Physical Education department offers courses and activities that motivate Bar- ringer students to pursue a higher degree of fitness. Through sports such as volley- ball, basketball, and track, the participants develop their skill and bodies. Aparatus tech- niques and exercise routines are utilized to maintain strength, improve coordination, and en- courage social interaction. The department also offers a variety of health education courses to prepare the student for a stable, rewarding, family and commu- nity life. At Barringer the For- eign Language depart- ment aids the student in the progressive ability to speak, read, express, and ultimate- ly to comprehend and enjoy a second lan- guage. The geograph- ical, political, and cul- tral aspects of the foreign nation are studied as well as its contributions to west- ern civilization. Chair- man: Dr. John Gianini Special Education Lonzella Brice Brenda Fajardo Phillip Hamilton Dolores Jackson Special Education is generally accepted to mean education designed for, and available to, exceptional individuals (handicapped and gifted) whose educa- tional needs are different in part from those of the most of their peers. Children and youth in need of special education are not limited to specific categories. Rather, they include curricular or instructional ad- justment throughout their school career or some sig- nificant portion of it. Barringer's special education is built on the concept of understanding unusual dif- ferences among the school-age population and meet- ing individual needs. The basic goal of the band is to build an enthusiasm for music along with musical taste so that perform standards worthy of each participant's abilities can be achieved. The Barringer Basketball team of 1988- 89 should not be remembered as a team of unsuccessful accomplish- ments, instead this team should be not- ed for their valiant effort toward a win- ning season. The toughest opponents were Essex Catholic and Malcolm X Shabazz in the Essex County Tour- nament. Barringer made it to the semi- final by defeating Essex Catholic and lost to Shabazz. In the State Tourna- ment the Blue Bears defeated West Orange in the first round, and lost to a powerful Elizabeth team in the second round. Even though our team came up with the short end of the stick, their loyal fans gave them love and support and in return the team gave back that same feeling over and over again. In addition, 7 of our students were given recognition by receiving a Barringer sweat shirt for out-standing achievement in a variety of school categories. The large turnout in the ballroom of the Aspen Manor in Parsip- pany, on November 25th, 1988, was proof that the spirit of the Big Blue has touched the hearts and minds of alumni and staff. As each of the 1378 alumni and guests entered the Aspen and greeted friends and classmates, they shared rec- ollections of the quality of instruction and the high degree of school spirit at Bar- ringer. During a brief program, remarks and historical highlights were heard by past principals Mr. Pat Restaino (1969- 79), Mrs. Marie Bagby (1979-86), our cur- rent principal Ms. Rose Serra, and school historian Mr. Sal DiGerlando.
