. . . the youth of today; the leaders of tomorrow . . . V . . . the QRAdUAtmQ CL SS op 1967 pResents . . . A t h e n a e u m BARRINGER HIGH SCHOOL NEWARK NEW JERSEY THE YOUNGER GENERATION Once there were children who played, and laughed, who were unconcerned as they took life by its tail to wrangle out its joy. and laughed at its seriousness, who sat upon the earth's green grass composing odes to distant stars, who smelled the sweetness of summer breezes, were stupified with the wonder of each new day. and thought nothing more beautiful than the morning sun on a cloudless day. The children grew, their bodies experiencing metabolic change. Their minds broadened, their scopes enlarged, their sense of values changed. And with their purposes directed, they set out upon the path of life determined to make their marks on the pages of history. High schools, technical and preparatory schools, colleges and other institutions of higher learning will, at the end of June, give to the world a new generation upon whom the future of mankind may very well depend, to whom many new and exciting things will be offered, and by whom grave responsibility and challenge will be met. It is upon our integrity, stamina, character, leadership, foresight, intelligence, and ingenuity that the future of civilized society will rest. The future of the world is in highly capable hands. Never before have the young been so educated. Nearly forty per cent of American youth go on to higher education—usually to specialize in some particular field, the number of which has vastly expanded. More and more members of our highly independent group take advantage of these opportunities which afford them as a group unprecedented affluence. Then again there are those who realize our value, who recognize our accomplishments and give merit and credit where it is due. They are the teachers who take time out to help us when we need them; the parents who leave us to our own devices—to find our own answers—but are always in the background just in case; the old man next door who stops us on the street because he knows we'll listen; the young mother who trusts us with her children; the policeman who helps us out of trouble; and many, many people like J.F.K.. who believed in us and didn't fail to let us know it. These people and innumerable others gave us strength, courage, and a renewed faith in our fellow man. Enough so that we could go on to complete our education, to join the Peace Corps, to fight for the rights of others—in the South and in Viet Nam—to stand up for our rights and decisions and to keep our morals high at any cost. Ours is the job to cure all the ills of the world and make important discoveries. We'll do it. We re determined. We can't fail! You may think us strange, we hope unique, but we shall be satisfied if at least you think of us. Because you are truly great, to you, this book, we dedicate! 6 e 6 i c a t i o n With an Einsteinian mind, and an open heart, you have won the favor of every student aware of your existence. For three years, you have worked unselfishly and have helped make Barringer the school it was designed to be. Now, since all good things must someday end. we outgoing seniors have recollected our thoughts and decided to choose you as our class mother and hope that you will remember as many of us as possible, for it is most definite that we will remember you. Miss Serra. a thank you wouldn't be enough for all the patience, wisdom and friendship you have distributed among us. Therefore, we offer these few words that have not come from the dictionary, but from the bottom of our hearts: “We love you dearly, and we'll miss you terribly. In recognition of your enduring efforts as a senior homeroom teacher, a math teacher, a club advisor, and a dear friend, we. the Senior Class of 1967, dedicate this yearbook to you in return for all the good you have done for us. Once again, thank you. and may God bless you! MISS ROSE MARIE SERRA Senior Homeroom Teacher Mathematics Teacher Math-College Review Advisor ADVISOR meet the aOmmistRAtoRs Mr. David Blank Acting Principal . . . THEY LEAD US TO ACCOMPLISHMENTS We would like to take this opportunity to thank the administrators for the fine job they have done this past year. Their duties, though many and varied, were executed with a certain kindness and tolerance—as though they recognized our needs and accepted our shortcomings. There are many fancy ways of showing appreciation (money, gifts, etc.), but our senior class chose the simplest . . . thanks! What do you expect on a “beer budget ? Big Brother is watching you. 8 What do you mean you can't fit in your locker? Now let's see . . . We'll give the seniors eighth period study. Eugene Mosley Bonnie Unger and Barbara Turner Seniors On Afro-American Mrs. Lucille Russell, Advisor eXtRACURRICULAR The Afro-American Club, under the direction of Mrs. Lucille Russell, convenes twice every month. The purpose of this club is to inform its members of the famous American Negroes who have served our country in some way, but have not received honor in the major school textbooks. A major aspect of our Music Department is Mr. Adolphe Argand's Chorus X. Not only do they sing within the school, but travel all over the state and compete in city and statewide competition. Mrs. Rose Brashear's Library Staff is an aid to the Big Blue's enormous library. The students who belong to this club work as library assistants to the three librarians. They aid students in using the card catalogue: they stamp the books which arc borrowed; and they arrange them on the shelves when they are returned to the library. Chorus X Mr. Adolphe Argand. Advisor Activities not only provide enjoyment to the students, but also build their skills. The students who are interested in writing may join the Creative Writing Club or the Acropolis magazine staff. There are clubs in the science field, the math field, the language field and the business field It is almost certain that a Barringer-ite in search of an extracurricular activity will not be in search for long. Library Staff Mrs. Rose Brashear, Advisor activities pRoduce well - Rounded students. Future Teachers of America Club Mrs. Frances Byron. Advisor Chemistry Club Mr. Leon Kosofsky. Advisor The Future Teachers Club, under the supervision of Mrs. Frances Byron, meets twice a month. The students who join this club are supposedly future school teachers, and learn the basic fundamentals of teaching. They also plan trips to various well-known places. Advisor cLubs, cLubs, cLubs, THE SPANISH CLUB Mrs. Glanzer SOCIETAS ROMANOS Mrs. Alvaranga. Advisor Barringer is very fortunate to have among its many educational facilities a well-organized Foreign Language Department. Four major foreign languages are taught, including French. Italian. Latin, and Spanish. Besides using the textbook, various newspapers and circulars are distributed to the students taking a particular language and these publications are written in the language corresponding to the course. After school, there are language clubs which meet twice a month to enjoy the cultural aspects of the different countries. These clubs elect officers, visit famous places, and plan parties Although the number of foreign language clubs are few. they play an important role in keeping Barringer students aware of foreign customs. 102 And moRe cLubs. VISUAL AIDS CREW Mr. Pallantc, Advisor CHEF S CLUB Mrs. Morgan. Advisor There are boys who feel that after school clubs are strictly for the girls. However, contrary to popular belief, there are clubs which are open exclusively to boys. The Electronics Club, the Chef's Club and the Visual Aid Crew are three of the largest all-male organizations established at Barringer. The Electronics Club has experimented with electric appliances and transisterized gadgets. The Chef's Club, which meets twice a month, is an organization designed to cultivate a taste for the culinary arts in young men. The Visual Aids Crew is in charge of showing films and slides in the classrooms and at the assembly programs. ELECTRONICS CLUB Mr, Schwartz, Advisor 103 DRAMATICS CLUB Mrs. Ross. Advisor MIXED CHORUS Mr. Valor. Advisor The Dramatics Club is. by far. one of the most popular clubs at Barringer. Each year the members of this club prepare to present the annual stage play. The Mixed Chorus, supervised by Mr. Alfon Valor, is a voluntary group of singers who gain two and one half credits if they get through the course successfully. The group has a major role in both of the concerts presented at Barringer. 104 SIGHT CONSERVATION CLASS Mr. Boutsikaris. Mr. Donald McEwan's Chess Club is a competitive team which has completed a successful year. The team consists of approximately twenty members, all of whom are excellent chess players. Another reason why Barringer's Business Department is one of the best in the state, is the excellent course offered in Machine Stenography. Miss Joanna Gellas and Mrs. Lillian Kappstatter instruct the classes. The students use the machines loaned to them by the school. MACHINE STENOGRAPHY CLASS Mrs. Kappstratter. Un Ja easy qo, easy come Our 1967 Senior Class consists of every kind of student in terms of personality, intelligence, charm, wit. sportsmanship, originality, and leadership. As we walk through the door of graduates, we find it proper to hand our outstanding characteristics to the incoming seniors in order that they will carry on where we left off. We seniors have been observing the Junior class very closely and we are happy to say that the efforts made in finding replacements, have not been made in vain. March 3rd was a date that many Barringerites will never forget. For it was at 8:00 P.M. on this day that the junior girls competed (and maybe even cheated) against the seniors in the annual Powder Puff Game This year’s game was a change of pace as far as the sport is concerned, for instead of the usual touch football game, basketball was played Mr. Frank Verducci and Mr. Frank Antonacci served as referees and George Briscoe, a senior and Doug Gemmell. a junior, coached the teams. Jean Derricotte was captain of the Senior Team and Paul Wilson took charge of the Senior Cheerleaders. Yvonne Flowers was captain of the Junior Team and Reggie Turner headed the Junior Cheerleaders. The juniors won(?) 14-12. So Big Deal! Joe Diana (Josephine Boopsey) cheers for the Senior Team. Paul Lucas (center), John Czagas and Wayne Smith announce the game, play by play. Junior Cheerleaders. CONGRATULATIONS TO THE 1967 SENIOR CLASS FROM HOMEROOM 239 M2 aOveRtisement It's much too late for publicity. We cannot publicize that which is up-coming for there is nothing coming up! What we can do. however, is look back into this previous year and re-live the successful, and most enjoyable events that Barringer has offered to us. The number of school dances was abundant, and each one was different in some respect. They started out fancy and ill-attended, and ended up plain and ill-attended. But to those who have attended every dance, or at least a majority of them, it is certain that you have enjoyed them. We've seen two musical concerts, one in the winter, one in the spring. Both were relatively the same as far as program synopsis is concerned, but each one was different enough so that students may pick their favorite. Ah. and remember the play. Damn Yankees wasn't it great? A great deal of time and effort went into that production and the audience was exceptionally pleased with the outcome. Then there was this particular Friday night on the 3rd of March when the senior girls and the junior girls competed against each other in the Powder Puff Game. Remember the boys with the beautiful legs who acted as cheerleaders and had the whole gymnasium in stitches ? Of course we can't forget the exciting football games and basketball games and the other sporting events. You’ll also remember the time when you were drinking from the water fountain and some crack pot student sneaked behind you and stuck a straight pin in your backside. You will recall the time when a very glamorous looking female student was walking down the corridor and some practical joker ran behind her and pulled her wig or wiglet and there, in front of you. stood the most homely looking creature you have ever seen in your life. Oh yes. students, it has been a great year for us. and now we must let all these glorious happenings stay behind, while we move forward.
