M.A. CAFETERIA STAFF 17 HISTORY OF THE OLYMPICS Greek Culture has enriched civilizations through the ages by its contributions to Philosophy, the Sciences, and Politics, but it is of another contribution that we now speak; The Olympics. The ancient games, held in the Olympia Valley, were celebrated every four years from 776 B.C. to 393 A.D.. when the pagan festival was suppressed by the zeal of a Christian Emperor. The Games took precedence over all other matters and during times of war a Sacred Truce was recognized and honored by all warring parties 'No greater honor could be bestowed than an Olympic victory. Shrines were built, homage paid, and a wreath of laurel given to the winners signifying their victory. The Olympic Games were a living sign of the value the Greeks attached to the body. Once more this typifies their characteristic emphasis on harmony. Men have bodies as well as minds, and both must be disciplined. The thinkers of Greece were not ivory-tower intellectuals.
