The January Class of 1964 is proud to salute our Garden State in this edition of the Athenaeum. We are particularly pleased to join in this statewide celebration, because Barringer High School has played such a significant role in the history of this state. For. Barringer was the first public high school in the state, and third in the nation to be established. Many of our alumni have added luster to the accomplishments of the state. We are happy to live in New Jersey. We find its climate varied, bracing, and invigorating. The countryside is arresting and always attractive. New Jersey has everything— mountains, valleys, low lands, marshes, and a fabulous shoreline Fresh water and salt water are never far away. The New Jersey beaches are the world's finest. And most Jersey natives are beachcomers at heart. The sunsets off the coast are magnificent New Jersey is a prosperous state with an expanding and diverse economy. Industry, farming, resorts, and commerce provide ample employment and wealth opportunities This state boasts of an excellent school system, and its colleges are illustrious. Its people are politically mature, independent, and persistently liberal. New Jersey is in the forefront of the progressive states in the Union New Jersey is a vital and dynamic state that is quickly girding itself for the growing pains of the next 300 years. But Hive (h Out 'rVeai i and TfCiueU JOHN FITZGERALD KENNEDY President of the United States May 29. 1917 - November 22. 1963 The January class of 1964 mourns the death of our beloved President and inspiring leader. He was aware of the problems of our age and their dire consequences. His historical sense, rhetoric, balance, and quick intelligence charted a positive and constructive course for this country. He imbued the youth of the nation with a sense of duty and purpose Excerpts from His Inaugural Address Now the trumpet summons us again—not as a call to bear arms, though arms we need—not as a call to battle, though embattled we are—but a call to bear the burden of a long twilight struggle, year in and year out, 'rejoicing in hope, patient m tribulation —a struggle against the common enemies of man: tyranny, poverty, disease and war itself . . . In the long history of the world, only a few generations have been granted the role of defending freedom in its hour of maximum danger. I do not shrink from this responsibility—I welcome it. I do not believe that any of us would exchange places with any other people or any other generation. The energy, the faith, the devotion which we bring to this endeavor will light our country and all who serve it—and the glow from that fire can truly light the world . . . With a good conscience our only sure reward, with history the final judge of our deeds, let us go forth to lead the land we love, asking His blessing and His help, but knowing that here on earth God's work must truly be our own. 77V 0. .CCUif Mr. Herman Schwartz, the iron man and senior adviser, prepares graduation program. u The vivacious Mrs. Madeline Jan-none. senior guidance counselor, consults with the continental Mrs. Lena Alvarenga. senior class adviser, about the araduation list. REMEMBER Remember the old grammar school— The teachers and friends— The plans for your future Seeming never to end. Recall now the tears At your first graduation— The diploma, the parties— Brimmed high with elation. Your first year in Barringer When high school seemed new— New teachers, new friends. And the motto, Big Blue. Then finally through hard work, You enter fourth year, Remembering all others With joy and a tear. You have carried your problems. The hardships endured; And now you're a senior. Already matured. Now think of your future With anticipation. And for which you have made Four years of preparation. Though you face a great challenge. Both real and intense. Your knowledge shall now grow From experience. In approaching this crossroad To begin a new life.
