We feel that she embodies the highest ideals of her profession. Mrs. Nunzio is loved by her students, because she loves and understands them. Her warmth, perception, and uncanny sense of humor are comforting and refreshing to troubled students. Her humanity is derived from her actual acquaintance with the vagaries of human life. She is an experienced and a learned student of life as it is. Mrs. Nunzio is admired by her colleagues and students, because she is an impassioned fighter for intellectual honesty. Integrity and honesty are the ideals that loom large in her life She has a deep respect for intellectual achievement and challenging ideas. Ideas never frighten her; she entertains thoughts as she would guests' As a teacher, she is consistently stimulating, because she teaches with vigor and devotion. Her heart and enthusiasm are put into her work. She draws upon an extensive literary background, and she knows how to relate knowledge to life. Her view of life is cosmopolitan; she reaches into the deepest feelings of her students, and she is effective, because she knows them. Mrs. Nunzio will never withold her energies, time, or efforts from a student in need. Mrs. Nunzio is an accomplished and sensitive poet who can stir mind and heart. She has an empathy for the unfortunate, the disadvantaged, the lost soul, and fates misbegotten. Her perception of the reality of life makes her approachable to all those who seek advice and assistance. She is always a human being and then a teacher. Mrs. Helen Nunzio taught us that you don't live a life of lies; you must live a life of truth. We will never forget her lesson, nor her example. 6 72, usi t J oa dbn i utn! Actually, it was three years ago. In a few days, we will be graduated. Time passes quickly. They were three wonderful years . . . years of fun and laughs galore. There were many good times sandwiched in between the studies and the exams. The friendships we made will be treasured. These were years of growth and change. Many of our cherished ideas and concepts were modified; some were completely abandoned; others were exchanged for newer, truer thoughts. Ambition was kindled and given direction. We developed poise and maturity. We learned to look at the world with greater sophistication. Decision-making became more logical. We discovered that the price of our actions was the consequences. Spiritual values were more meaningful and significant. Citizenship implied responsibilities and duties to be performed effectively. The necessity for proper and wise leadership was impressed upon us. We readily realized why our country’s heritage was to be honored and cherished. We enthusiastically pledged ourselves to the preservation of this nation. Our fellow classmates reflected different religious, national, and racial backgrounds; and they became our trusted friends. Finally, we recognized that learning is a lifetime endeavor. 62 Aneid . . . Qiatzuiqer TKViqh School Qlewaik, ffteio Qeney cy. icc Our civilization today represents the accumulation of discovery, invention, and acquired knowledge. This is the product of mankind s persistent endeavor for improvement. What has been achieved has been dearly earned. Progress is admittedly a slow process, If one regards the total sweep of history. But we can be heartened by the fact that more progress is being made in this century than in all other centuries combined. The editors of this yearbook are of the opinion that every graduate should be cognizant of man's past achievements, his unfulfilled goals, and the problem areas awaiting solution. We would like to think that each senior leaves Barringer High School with a sense of purpose—to serve the development of mankind. 4 The progress of civilization has been ponderous and frequently discouraging. That which benefits mankind is not always welcome Men of vision have often been ridiculed, disparaged, and even condemned; the realization of their ideas are thus impeded. It must be admitted that it is Man’s lack of understanding and his ignorance that hinders growth and development. Man’s achievement must be accelerated; this is an imperative of this threatening age. As seniors, we must be aware of issues, and we must be in the forefront of encouraging man’s struggle against his environment, sickness, poverty, tyranny, and the forces of nature. Let us not be parasites! Let us promise to do our part to move forward. For. we. too. are mankind! 5 Out Jtlan in the Quill a nee OQiie Mr. Hilton Otero counsels Donna Rattenne on college prospects. ‘ En todo estas, y todo eres. “You are in everything, and you are everything.“ We can think of no other line of poetry more appropriate than this by one of Spain's outstanding poets. Rosalia Castro, to describe Mr. Hilton Otero. The Class of June. 1963. is proud to dedicate the Yearbook to one who literally is in everything because of his ability, versatility, and humanity. Outstanding teacher, persevering guidance counselor, violin virtuoso—this begins the long list of influences which Mr. Otero has exerted upon students, friends, and community. We honor him for epitomizing the highest traditions and principles of his profession. Teaching is a most worthy profession. It is a field of endeavor that undergirds our Republic and civilization. It is a profession that necessitates high standards of performance, sterling character, and a sense of responsibility. His enthusiasm for learning and teaching extends beyond the classroom, to courses for city officials and employees who found a need and a joy in his Spanish classes. No matter what the situation—coaching a Spanish play for an Assembly program, teaching Spanish to faculty members from the Newark high schools, helping to fill out college applications, or expounding on music, poetry, and moral standards, Mr. Otero captures his listeners with charm and wisdom. As we leave our youthful days behind to travel varied and complex experiences in this fast-changing world, we shall remember many things. Mr. Otero.
