The arts embellish our lives with beauty and develop within us greater understanding of life. In so doing, the arts add new dimensions to our lives. The truer meaning of life is more easily perceived through the arts. Man's soul cries out for expression. and the arts are the most effective instruments to communicate man’s most revealing and inspired thoughts. New insights are unveiled for our consideration. The mind hungers for truth and guidance. Talented and perceptive artists illuminate our minds and show us the new directions that mankind should consider. The arts have the capacity to remind us of our noblest purposes and the innate dignity and significance of life. Nature in all its glory and wonder vividly portrayed by word and by brush. When life is bitter and disappointments unbearable, the arts lift our spirits and contribute to our resiliency. In making us aware of the essential values of life, the arts are a civilizing influence. It is interesting to observe that all world civilizations are evaluated and measured by their artistic achievements. For these reasons, we sincerely believe that the lively arts are worthy of our study and respect. Emily Rugg ro develop a sonnet to be submitted to the literary magazine. Qtttavm S i jmi z edica iisn The deed is everything, the glory, naught.” With enthusiastic acclaim, the Class of January 1962. is proud to dedicate this Yearbook to Mr. Marvin Shlofmitz, who has whipped and cajoled so many Yearbooks from precarious infancy to dignified debut. Keeping a journalistic secret from our alert adviser involved duplicity for which, we hope, we are now forgiven. By all who come within the circle of his influence Mr. Shlofmitz is respected for his integrity and patient understanding. His witty sense of humor and practical outlook are successful aids in his efforts to guide his students toward the goals of scholarship, service, and spiritual values. He realizes, also, the teacher's responsibility to the community and cheerfully contributes much time and labor to Barringer’s P.T.S.A. We. the Graduating Class of January 1962. are grateful for the opportunity to say. Thank you. Mr. Shlofmitz. 6 A QUEST FOR EXCELLENCE Barringer High School has always held an unique position in this city's educational system. It is the third oldest high school in the nation, and it has maintained a tradition of academic excellence. The vast number of alumni throughout New Jersey regard Barringer with reverence and enthusiastic concern. We are most fortunate to have as our administrators. Mr. William R. Cain, principal, and Mr. David E. Blank, the newly appointed vice principal, who are sincerely and earnestly endeavoring to emulate the effectiveness and accomplishments of such outstanding predecessors as Mr. William N. Barringer. Dr. Wayland E. Stearns. Dr. Roger B Saylor, and Mr. Ephraim Eisenberg. Many of the recently acclaimed innovations in education have long been part of the Barringer program of studies. This is the Barringer formula for academic success: discipline to develop a wholesome character and a proper learning atmosphere. Effective citizenship and a respect for American ideals are emphasized. Warmth and a personal awareness of the welfare of the individual student tend to inspire each student to do his best. Encouragement of a community-wide interest makes the school the focal point of the North Ward area. Insistence upon the high academic standards, common sense experimentation and innovations, and faculty teamwork have been invaluable in establishing the highest staff esprit de corps in the city system. Barringer's learning program includes a dynamic and vigorous sports and activity program. Community resources and field trips are utilized to raise the intellectual sights of the students. The administration, faculty, and parents are always striving to have the City of Newark give its full support for first class education. These are the reasons why the students and faculty are proud to be a part of the Big Blue family! Dr. Edward Rattenne examine student, while nurse. Mrs. Linda Kocian looks on. Te her-clerk. A Liberal education should not merely free a student from ignorance. prejudice and fear, but should also release his mind and abilities for the better realization of his personal aims and his contributions to society. There is no easy way. It is an experience that indeed tries the souls of class advisers. Problems have to be resolved in a fair and democratic manner, differences of opinion have to be harmonized, class morale has to be kept on the upbeat, money must be raised and expended wisely and judiciously, dances must be planned and held, graduation ceremonies rehearsed and at least a thousand details attended to. The responsibility is time consuming and most trying. In our estimation, the only award that we can give to our most gracious and understanding advisers. Mrs. Lillian Lehrman and Mr. Julius Kritzer, are our highest respect and esteem. u Mr. John Vogel Mead Guidance Coumcior We wish to thank our special advisers for contributing so generously and thoughtfully their know-how.'' which insured the success of our class endeavors. Mr. John Vogel's personal interest, attention, and wise counseling made it possible for fifty-five per cent of the senior class to apply for college admission. His time was always at the disposal of the students. Mrs. Gertrude Kingsley with dry humor, infinite patience, and practical guidance led us by the hand through four happy years at Barringer High School. Whenever many of us became discouraged, confused, and dismayed, she inspired us to persist and conquer our difficulties. Mrs. Kingsley helped us to realize what we thought were impossible goals. It takes toil and trouble and countless hours to produce a yearbook We are most grateful. When we have homeroom teachers such as Mrs. Frances Morgan and Mrs. Jetta Sedicino, we are sure to start the school day on the right foot. We deeply appreciate their personal concern for our success and happiness. Mr(. The Gym Building was added in 1931. WITH GRATITUDE AND PRIDE In 1962. the Newark Board of Education authorized the clearance of the site for the new Barringer High School. Construction bids have been submitted, and the architect, Mr. Robert H. Fava, completed the architectural plans and renderings. By 1964. the project will be ready. Barringer will finally have the physical plant and facilities needed to continue its tradition of excellence in education. With great pride and satisfaction, the citizens of Newark endorsed the construction of this long awaited dream. The present Barringer High School opened its doors in 1898. What I am to be. I do not yet fully know. What I am now; I can largely attribute to Barringer. Through the guidance and understanding of my teachers, the fellowship of my friends, and the patience of my parents. I have been aided in my development as an individual. DON DEL PLATO My three years at Barringer High have been most enjoyable and pleasant. I have participated on the track and swimming teams, improving not only in athletic ability, but learning a basic lesson in sportsmanship as well. Both the teachers and the students at Barringer have been amiable, sincere, and understanding. I have broadened my scholastic and industrial abilities. Now. as I prepare to embark on a career as an industrial arts teacher, I can look back at the wonderful memories of Barringer and say, Thank you Barringer, for you have served me as a stepping stone to a future Of endless opportunity. ROSALYN ZEID My three years 1 Barringer have proved to be a wonderful experience; one that I'll never forget. I have attained an intellectual background which has opened the doors of college and a future of infinite opportunity to me. I have acquired many warm and sincere friends here at Barringer who I will always remember as some of the nicest people I have ever known. The traditional Barringer school spirit has carried over to our class as it does in all classes. I shall never forget this spirit which has been a part of me throughout my stay at Barringer. THOMAS MEEKER My three years at Barringer have given me several experiences that are a part of learning to become an adult. I have made many new friends and have had the opportunity to work in harmony with them. Needless to say. I have had the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of higher education. But beyond this. I was fortunate enough to broaden my cultural background through field trips, and classes pertaining to musical concepts or theories These three years have made me realize the necessity of a good education. My Barringer years have not only improved me educationally, but also have expanded my outside or social interests. Saturday afternoons were something to look forward to during the football season. The several dsnees held each year, have made many enjoyable Friday nights. These are just a few of the things which have left an indelible mark on my mind, and shall keep the spirit of Barringer alive in me forever. ( X pLbr p tatse I o atl io s L nbtn fr! BARBARA Dl GIOVANNI I feel that my past three years at Barringer have broadened my intellectual background. I've found guidance and understanding among my counsellors and teachers. These years have been full of fun and excitement. Not only have they changed my outlook on life, but they have given me moments of pleasure. Barringer's extra-curricular activity program has given me the opportunity to meet many new friends and participate in activities with them. These activities have helped me to become a part of the wonderful warm and friendly atmosphere at Barringer. DONALD HUPE Barringer has given me an opportunity to achieve what is perhaps the greatest gift of all; the gift of knowledge. I have made many friends by participating in academic and social affairs. I have learned not only the type of knowledge that one finds in textbooks, but also tangible type such as meeting people and engaging in activities with them. Barringer has helped me to choose my prospective career and impart in me the desire to succeed. MIKE VALENTINO My three years at Barringer have been a wonderful experience. and also, a rewarding one. They have been rewarding because of the valuable relationships that I have made in athletic participation. Learning the lesson of fair play and sportsmanship has oeen one of my treasured accomplishments. I am deeply indebted to the teachers at Barringer in helping me choose my major field of study, in selecting a college, and in helping me to stay on the right path. But most of all, my relationships with the students of Barringer High, old friends and new, have been a most gratifying and deeply rich experience. TERRY TRENT What have these last three years in Barringer meant to me? They have left me with a lot of wonderful and yes. even incredible memories. I have made a lot of new and unforgettable friends, yet I have kept up my most valuable friendships with my old friends; the ones from whom I hope never to be separated. Barringer is filled with traditions which at first had no meaning to me. But after I became accustomed to the school and started to take part in the many activities offered, the traditions became a part of me. and likewise. I became a part of them. I have received perhaps one of the best educations that could be offered anywhere. Yes. Barringer means a lot to me and I know that I shall never forget the profitable experiences, scholastic and social, which have poured forth from the proud walls of the Big Blue. bicaiion l(_) 2 atute -rtnoioski No bubble is so iridescent or floats longer than that blown by the successful teacher. A REVOLUTION IN EDUCATION The grim and unrelenting cold war has caused the people of the United States to become introspective in their evaluation of our democratic system. Americans are taking stock of our institutions to determine if the United States is prepared and able to meet the unprecedented challenges of this decisive decade. All research studies emphatically reveal that the educational system has been found wanting. There is little disagreement over this. There is. however. disagreement as to what should be a proper solution to this perplexing problem of inadequacy. The citizens are aroused and concerned; education has become a major political and social issue in the United States. For many years, the professional staff of Barringer High School has been awar%e of its duties and responsibilities to the nation. The curriculum has been slowly revised; controlled experiments have been initiated; new information and insights have been included into the courses of study; newer methods and approaches have been developed and tested: the latest techniques and materials are being employed to improve instruction, and many innovations have become standard practice. Without compensation and on their own time and expense, more than half of the teaching staff is taking graduate work at our colleges and universities in order to improve their competence. Alumni visiting the school are quick to recognize the significant changes that have been made. There are stepped up demands. Standards have been raised. Attitudes improved. The academic pace has quickened. Reflected on these pages are some of the more significant changes taking place in these hallowed halls of ivy. 68 Attorney Mr. Martin Loftus lectures to United States History 4 class on the subiect of court procedures and civil rights Joe Coppolo in his advanced Mechanical Drawing class is most proud of his model home that he designed and constructed. A boy can guard and protect these, and perhaps invest them wisely and win a profit—a profit larger than you ever dreamed. A boy will inherit your world. All your work will be judged by him.
