The January Class of I960 Presents Joys of Liuing ATHENAEUM CONTENTS Theme..................4 Dedication.............6 Administration ... 7 Seniors...............13 Curriculum............50 Clubs.................56 Sports................67 Advertisements. .. .80 Barringer High School Newark, New Jersey January, I960 Friendship Athletic Relaxation The Declaration of Independence guarantees every American the right to the pursuit of happiness Americans frantically pursue personal satisfaction, but for most of us. it is elusive. Perhaps, happiness is difficult to find if we are seeking a materialistic form. It is obvious that true personal fulfillment can not be bought. A basic evaluation of the real meaning of life reveals happiness, although intangible, is within the grasp of all. The key to happiness is good health which enables one to participate in the adventure of living The beauty and spectacle of nature is available for all to behold. A vital ingredient in the full enjoyment of life is a sincere and purposeful love. Joy of living can be found in human relationships, observation of man's foibles and in the participation of life’s activities. We have tried to depict on these pages some of the fundamental joys of living. Dedication Mr. Victor J. Salerno PHYSICAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENT CHAIRMAN Friend, Coach and Educator For more than a century. Barringer has been dedicated to the development of keen minds and strong bodies. It has sought to instill in each student a sense of sportsmanship, fair play, and a desire to wiri. To this end competent and efficient Barringer faculties have devoted their time and effort. The essence of this goal is embodied in competitive sports and directed physical activities. Today the importance of physical fitness is more apparent than ever before as an essential of national interest. We of Barringer are fortunate to have a department of Physical Education acknowledged to be one of the finest in the state. A reputation as splendid as this was not obtained by chance, it has been developed through the ability and devotion of a true educator. Mr. Victor Salerno. Many trophies and honors, both city and state, have been won for Barringer through Mr. Salerno’s coaching. But. far more important than these victories is the spirit Mr. Salerno has sought to instill in each of his boys, whether on a team or in his class. Mr. Salerno, you have given to your students the meaning of leadership, sportsmanship, a desire to win. and the need to win fairly. We. the Graduating Class of January 1960. are honored to dedicate our yearbook to Mr. Victor J. VcU In dedicating our yearbook to Mrs. Josephine Dill, we are proud to add our acclaim to the many accolades bestowed upon Mrs. Dill upon her retirement. We pay tribute to Mrs. Dill as an outstanding human being and professional educator. Her ready wit, her humility, her driving energy, and her warmth have always made her an attractive and inspiring individual. Her dynamic thinking and cosmopolitan views have delighted the young in heart. As a counselor, she was a hard task master, demanding that each of her counselees respond to the highest standards of ethical behavior and intellectual achievement. May we say thanks for your efforts on our behalf. But most important of all. we admire Mrs. Josephine Dill, because she has been a fighter all her life. She has been a dedicated and consistent fighter for the equality and intellectual emancipation of women, proficient scholarship, superior educational opportunities for all students, and for the improved status of the teaching profession. As an active citizen in her community, Mrs. Dill has diligently crusaded for civic improvement and quality education. She is indeed a brave warrior in the struggle for a better world in which to live. Her daily life and deeds have exemplified the finest ideals of American citizenship. Humanity owes her a debt of gratitude For, she is a part of that small, gallant band of dedicated human beings who persist in striving and working for a better tomorrow for all people. This formation, based upon the speed and the agility of the backfield and the quickness and power-blocking of the line, has led the Blue to a respectable 6-2-1 season. Shifting to this new type of football has been a grueling and enduring task for both coaches and players alike. True to the tradition of Barringer, our boys have met the challenge and in doing so foiled the experts' opinions by their dynamic and explosive play throughout the season. 106 JAMES CURTIS End MIKE MACALUSO GuA'd All County—All City RALPH CICCONE Defensive Line 8 cker Mr. Nepp presents the Mr Football Awarri ED ROTUNDI Defensive Halfback PHIL BRUZZCCH Cent.
