■■■ OUR AMERICAN HERITAGE AND GROWTH On July 4. 1776. a group of men, dedicated to the cause of liberty, issued to the world our Declaration of Independence, thus establishing this nation Adoption of the Constitution continued this precedent in world history. The editors of this yearbook, after much deliberation, selected our American Heritage as the theme of this book. The above map measures the growth of the United States in terms of territorial expansion But. as a nation, we have been constantly growing, developing, and maturing in all fields of human endeavor, until this day. we are the most powerful and wealthiest nation in the world. Our riches, abundance, and accomplishments are awesome and make us humble in our gratitude However, in this yearbook, we have endeavored to emphasize what we think to be the major and lasting values of our heritage. These values constitute a way of life that has given our people a greater degree of security and happiness than any other government in the history of man. Many have characterized our country as

the “great experiment in living democracy. This concept of the way free men should and must live has evolved through much torment, strife, and struggle. The ideals of freedom and democracy have been bought with American blood. There are many memorial tablets in our school that attest to this fact. This, then is our most cherished part of our inheritance. Our freedoms are our proudest achievements As the fly leaf at the back of the Athenaeum. the editors deliberately selected a photographic reminder of the bombing of Pearl Harbor as a warning that Americans must be alert, vigilant, and willing to make sacrifices to preserve our dearly and bitterly won AMERICAN HERITAGE. The struggle today against us is diabolically subtle and sophisticated. It will be the task of the future for Americans to continue to rise to the requirements and duties of this complex challenge and meet it successfully. For. we are essentially the last defenders of freedom and democracy in the world . . . the last hope of mankind
