OF IDEALS THE JANUARY CLASS OF 1959 PRESENTS OUR AMERICAN HERITAGE CONTENTS Ad min ini rat ion and Faculty Seniors Activities Sports ■f Advertisements 7 13 _ 41 r 7 ... 79 BARRINGER HIGH SCHOOL NEWARK, NEW JERSEY 3 ■■■ OUR AMERICAN HERITAGE AND GROWTH On July 4. 1776. a group of men, dedicated to the cause of liberty, issued to the world our Declaration of Independence, thus establishing this nation Adoption of the Constitution continued this precedent in world history. The editors of this yearbook, after much deliberation, selected our American Heritage as the theme of this book. The above map measures the growth of the United States in terms of territorial expansion But. as a nation, we have been constantly growing, developing, and maturing in all fields of human endeavor, until this day. we are the most powerful and wealthiest nation in the world. Our riches, abundance, and accomplishments are awesome and make us humble in our gratitude However, in this yearbook, we have endeavored to emphasize what we think to be the major and lasting values of our heritage. These values constitute a way of life that has given our people a greater degree of security and happiness than any other government in the history of man. Many have characterized our country as the “great experiment in living democracy. This concept of the way free men should and must live has evolved through much torment, strife, and struggle. The ideals of freedom and democracy have been bought with American blood. There are many memorial tablets in our school that attest to this fact. This, then is our most cherished part of our inheritance. Our freedoms are our proudest achievements As the fly leaf at the back of the Athenaeum. the editors deliberately selected a photographic reminder of the bombing of Pearl Harbor as a warning that Americans must be alert, vigilant, and willing to make sacrifices to preserve our dearly and bitterly won AMERICAN HERITAGE. The struggle today against us is diabolically subtle and sophisticated. It will be the task of the future for Americans to continue to rise to the requirements and duties of this complex challenge and meet it successfully. For. we are essentially the last defenders of freedom and democracy in the world . . . the last hope of mankind IS Alt RINGER’S HALL OF FAME 1SH Our Nominee MRS. AUGUSTA B. FREY. R.N. IMS graduating '''M be Mrs. Augusta b. Frey. We deem her worthy of this honor of her unwavering dedication and service to the students and faculty of Barringer. Her responses in countless situations are a tribute to the traditions and ethics of her noble profession In our estimation, no one is more befitting the title of Registered Nurse than our Mrs. Frey. She never failed to live up to the responsibilities and ideals of service established by her profession. Her treatment consisted of an adept combination of sound medical advice. a witty sense of humor, and plenty of human warmth Wisely knowing the interrac-tion of physical and emotio nal factors in causing illness. Miss Frey never neglected the emotional health of students.? who seeked medical advice. We are grateful to Mrs. Augusta Frey for being an efficient and competent nurse, but most important of all wa wish to express our appreciation for being a good friend to us. In a world were there is little unselfish love, service to humanity and few true friends, we have learned to treasure such devoted individuals as you. Mrs Augusta B Frey. CHIEF INTEREST OF MAN I think it is not difficult to account for today's heightened interest on the part of the general public throughout our Nation and. indeed, the free world in the improvement of justice. That growing interestpis in large measure a product of the tumultous times in which we live. For these are not only times which have produced a monstrous threat to all freedom, but. by the very reason of that threat, are times which have induced in free peoples everywhere an ever intensifying critical self examination of the institutions upon which their freedoms depend — an insistence upon exposure of the imperfections of those institutions, a peremptory demand upon those who are entrusted with those institutions to improve and strengthen them the more surely to withstand the onslaught bent upon their destruction Never was it more true than today that Justice sirs, is the chiefest interest of man on earth. 5 AMERICA’S CREATIVE PACEMAKERS THOMAS EDISON I overt Of who Charged the World IRVING BERLIN The World Sings His Songs GEORGE WASHINGTON CARVER From Slave to Scientist ADMIRAL RICHARD C. MEYNER SPEAKS TO SENIORS DEMOCRACY IS A GROWING. DEVELOPING MECHANISM “I am happy to have the opportunity to express my thoughts to the Barringer High School students. It seems to me that one of the most important elements in maintaining democracy or seif government In our land is to interest our young people, the citizens of tomorrow, in their responsibility as future citizens. It seems to me that in verse and song and prose, we talk about our liberties a little too much! We can't have liberties and equality of opportunity, which seems to be our ideal, unless we have a willingness on the part of our citizens to assume the responsibilties that are definitely a part of liberty and land rights as citizens. You have an obligation to prepare yourself for that endeavor. We talk about equality of opportunity. It's one of those ideals which is never fully realized It was expressed in some of the fundamental documents which brought about the birth of the country and the development of the Constitution. It doesn't mean quite the same today, as it meant 150 years ago. You must recall that at the time of the adoption of the Constitution that equality of opportunity was probably more of an expression of an idea than an accomplishment. At the time of the adoption of the Constitution, for instance, not all people in the United States had the right to vote. In this very state, up until 1844, before a person could hold public office, he had to meet a religious qualification. We have gotten the right to vote over the years by virtue of interested citizens. And only through the efforts of a great many people, through the years, with unmoved selfish motives have we come to the situation of today, where in most areas of the United States, we have equality of educational opportunities. There are some areas right in the state of New Jersey where the standard is not quite what it is in other areas! Democracy is a growing, developing mechanism. Self government achievements of ideals can only be brought about by the constant re-examination of the willingness of the substantial amount of our citizens to try to bring our existing force of laws more into keeping with the ideal of democracy. In each generation of self government, there have been citizens who have just thought of themselves and their own immediate family, but were willing to be their brothers' keeper and devote their lives and much of their efforts for the benefit of their fellow man. Are you going to be one of those persons who decided to live alone or in a vacuum? Are you going to participate in a vital growing democracy? I would hope that you would, by your effort, prepare yourselves for the obligation that you should undertake when you reach voting age This requires effort and work in the self understanding of the problems of your fellow man. In High School hi friends ware the beginning of a plenty, now life in High School. As we open the book of your life ... On April BO. 1927 Marvin Shlofmitz was born to Mr. and Mrs. George Shlofmitz. He was a very pleasant baby. From a very young age he wanted to teach other children and constantly played school with his brother Sol. They got along very well together. He began his education at the age of five and attended 14th Avenue Grammar School in Newark. He enjoyed going to school. With honors in 1939 at the age of 1314 he was graduated from Grammar School. He later went to West Side High School also in Newark. While in West Side he served on the school paper and took an interest in this type of work. In 1943 he was graduated and went on to Montclair State Teachers' College. Then in 1946. Uncle Sam stepped in and interrupted his college education for a while. In the United States Army Air Force he did a fine job as a corporal. After being in the Air Force he lost interest in school; but with the help of a professor he regained his ambitions and enrolled again at Montclair State Teachers' College. In 1948 he was graduated from Montclair State but went on studying and later he received his Master’s Degree in English and History. He was offered his first teaching job in 1950 in Teaneck High School. After teaching there for four years he took Newark examinations- and passed. He then was transferred to Cleveland Junior High School in Newark. He taught there for two years, but did not enjoy his stay there. He then felt as though he wanted to teach outside of Newark until he came to Barringer in 1955 where he has remained and is very satisfied. We. the Class of January 1959. would like to express our appreciation and gratitude to Mr. Shlofmitz for doing a fine and outstanding job as our yearbook adviser .'. . and friend . . . This is your life Marvin Shlofmitz . . . The beginning of a teaching car-. . . at Tcaneck High School. 4W- 77 A Friend A Friend Acropolis Luncheonette Miss Agustus Al from Rutgers Univ. Vague shadows of wars, dark, centers of famine: outshown by the dancing light of hope. Elusive firefly, the road ahead lies clear and clean. paved with the golden asphalt of experience upon which to build Tomorrow! Look ahead to a world without hunger or disease or war. Ships, propelled by tiny beings called atoms, leaving homes with plastic walls, over seas made farms to feed spreading Man. This peace, this hope is what lies unfound but by an hour, a week, a year. Hope lies in man conquering himself, and loving, not tolerating, his brother. Hope lies ahead — o'er the THRESHOLD OF TOMORROW. The eternal universe to be pierced and lacerated by rockets to planets far planting the seeds of humanity. • • Within His Room, He Showed Us A World In recognition of Samuel Buhrman’s thirty-five years of devoted service to Barringer High School as an outstanding teacher of science and director of audio-visual aids, the June Class of 1959 proudly honors this most capable and effective educator by dedicating its yearbook to him. As the third oldest high school in the United States. Barringer has always enjoyed an enviable reputation as a school of high academic achievement Probably more than any other factor it is a dedicated faculty that is responsible for setting the tone and character of a school. Mr. Buhrman. charged with the responsibility of proficiently training some of America’s future scientists and technicians, has always fulfilled his obligation with distinguished success. Mr. Buhrman's legendary wily humor with which he punctuates his lectures will long be remembered, including his often quoted remark, You reserve your right to flunk. In his classes Mr. Buhrman has always upheld the traditional virtues and values in spite of the pressures of this modern age of cynicism. He has always emphasized the importance of sound character training, honesty, integrity, service to fellowmen, self-discipline, restraint, and the value of scholarship. He is a selfless man We the students wish to publicly acknowledge our appreciation for the many hours that Mr. Buhrman volunteered to set-up audio-visual equipment for numerous student affairs in the school. We do remember him coming in on weekends to set-up lights and amplifiers for our dances. In your long career. Mr. Samuel Buhrman. you have ably instructed and inspired many students. We. the Senior Class of 1959, are proud to have been your students. 6 Administrators Chart the Course of the School Mr. William R. For the first time in the history of human affairs, a serious attempt is being made to make international law prevail. The Soviet Union is building a nuclear locomotive. We build an atomic airplane. Britain supplies her electrical needs by fission. Foods can be preserved by radiation. Isotopes kill cancer. Harbors can be made with the swish of a plunger. Undreamed of frontiers. The Threshold of Tomorrow. Mutation and genetic changes as a result of atomic radiation on corn is studied at Brookhavcn Laboratory. World's first full-scale atomic-electric power plant at Shippingsport. Pa hum One autumn day when leaves had turned to gold, The air was crisp, the Barringer students bold. They ventured forth, a picnic to attend Beside a stream where willows sway and bend. The bus was quickly filled with girls and boys Who laughed and sang and spoke of all the joys That they had planned so many weeks before To make the outing fun, and not a bore. Before the driver starts to pull away. There are some things that I would like to say Concerning types you'll find in every school. And since a Board of Education rule Demands a chaperone on every trip. I'll first describe our teacher. Mrs. Flipp. Full nine and twenty in a chance together in fellowship. A buxom woman with thinning, silvery hair, Gentle eyes and healthy complexion fair; An understanding heart her obvious trait. Plus an intelligent mind endowed by Fate; She was to set the rules not to be rejected; The students looked to her to be protected We will sing a song in harmony. A gay but sentimental melody. This was what Mrs. Flipp commanded. Do it, or you will be reprimanded Here comes the Brain, a student very wise; With his money, books he always buys; The social life did not attract him much. He'd rather read his Chaucer, Poe. and such, His appearance was not very neat; His friends he very often wouldn't greet. In a comer now he takes his place. And from that book will rarely lift his face. The Life of the Party hopped proudly on the bus; A crowd gathered round him admiringly making a fuss. Known by all the girls as a gay blade in manner. He advertised his charm as if on a banner. Though popular, high marks he always lacked Because his life with social things was packed. His clothes, his eyes, his smile, aimed to impress; Though not so brilliant, no one thought the less. m Ooing steady The next to come arrived sad and alone; Walking as if unwanted or unknown. His friends all gaily waved and said hello . He shyly passed and sat in the very last row. His hair was black as coal, his eyes were blue To say he was good-looking would be true. In sports and clubs he takes no active part. But at the games he’s there before the start. Silence is a virtue, I agree, But none should be as silent as is he. Perhaps some day his quietness will pass. And he will be the loudest In the class. my bus ticket here someplace. By Jeffrey Chase-Her (With Apolog ies) Throughout the bus her voice was loud and clear This chatterbox was heard with scorn and fear. In the midst of a crowd she's sure to be around. Welcome or not. in your hair she will be found. This tall, thin girl with eyes so big and blue Loves to talk but never says what’s true; Her blabbing tongue is always on the run; The things that sound unkind, to her, are fun. A chatterbox can be a vocal bore, No wonder that at times her throat is sore. td had fallen love; by moonlight pale. Ho slept ire than does the nightingale. I watched the Athlete strutting to his place; Down the narrow aisle he seemed to race; A football hero minus natural grace Tripped and promptly fell flat on his face; A tall and muscular specimen of a man Who never thought of any future plan; But on the field he played with all his might, His loyal fans all cheered him with delight. Sitting next to the teacher is the ono Who. in sweet discourse, cannot be outdone; The Apple-polisher acts out his role. To raise his mark is such an obvious goal. He smiles and flatters, and turns on the charm, And thinks he is deceiving his schoolmarm. This type, however, whether wit or fool Is standard equipment in the average school.
