THE JANUARY CLASS OF 1958 PRESENTS ITS In these troubled times, great interest is centered upon the behavior of youth in American life. Too often, youth is characterized by intemperate critics as being maladjusted, emotionally unstable, and in a constant state of social revolt against their elders. The editors of this Yearbook took a careful look at the activities of the Barringer senior class, and they came to the conclusion that the current estimate of youth is inaccurate The editors feel that the vast majority of young citizens are working hard and conscientiously to become the leaders of the future. This Yearbook is the story of youth's efforts to learn how to be tomorrow's effective citizens. This page is dedicated by the January Class of 1958 to the memory of just such a man -our late and beloved principal and friend. Or. Roger B. Saylor. Through his thirty-nine years of devoted service to Barringer High School as a teacher, chairman of the science department and then as principal. Dr. Saylor had become synonymous With the growth and achievements of Barringer High School. This page depicts, we feel, the dynamic and very human personality of Dr. Saylor. While he was a man | high ideals and demanded the best from his students. D . Saylor was a man of great understanding, compassion.1 and sympathy tor the frailties and short comings ot hit fellow human beings. Dr. Saylor was an educator, who long before the shock of Sputnik, recognised that the power of this nation depended upon the technical skills and know how of its people. Therefore, he constantly stressed the value of scholarship, encouraged academic achievement, and sound character training for effective citisenship. Dr. Saylor always urged his faculty to teach above the level of their students so that we would be challenged to extend Our efforts beyond our imagined limitations. Our former principal was always an approachable and friendly man. whose office door was always open to those of us with small and big problems. He was a shirt sleeved principal who worked long and arduously to make Barringer the best possible school. Dr. Saylor often remarked that he had great faith in the young people of America. We will do our best to live up to his faith and trust in us. FACULTY Anthony Atom! Angiola Alvarenga Adolph Argand Luc.He Augustus N. Howard Ayers PhD. BA. M.A. B.S. After twenty-five years of irresponsible neglect and exploitation of this city, the people became disillusioned in the fate and destiny of their city. A mass exodus from Newark to the suburbs ensued Newark was a dead town . . . without a future . . . left to decay into a vast slum. Since 1954. an admirable attempt has been made to rebuild the spiritual and physical aspects of the city. Much has been successfully accomplished to stem the tide of physical. social and economic deterioration. There is much yet to be done This is the challenge of the future The New Newark must be made into a new city for all the people—residents, students, and business men alike The city of Newark must hold a future and a promise for the youth of our town. table of contents administration faculty seniors activities sports patrons and advertisements — 6 — 7 -19 -77 -85 110 Mr. Murrow interviews 'This is whc'a I do most of my reading My wife and I enjoy pitying a furious game of backgammon. Although such essentials as spelling, correct usage, punctuation, and formal grammar are of course of much importance, the major emphasis is upon clear and logical thinking and facility in communicating and receiving ideas Since words are of prime importance in oral and written expression. vocabulary is stressed in the modern world, language experiences are wide and varied: books, magazines, television, motion pictures, radio, newspapers, and comic books. This is the basis of the methods of science and the means by which man can understand and control his environment. Since it is not possible to think without facts, we must develop for the student a large body of information through which he can understand his environment, and therefore be better able to react to it properly. Neither of the aforementioned goals can be achieved, unless there is the means by which the teacher can communicate to the student. Furthermore, the student must be able, adequately, to express himself and to make himself understood. To this end. it is the function of the department to develop precision in the use of language. Our ultimate purpose is to develop individuals who can understand both the technical and social implications of science in a world that is becoming increasingly science-minded. and who are able to establish man in his proper place in such a world. math department The Mathematics Department, aims to make available those experiences with mathematical concepts needed by Barringer students to insure their hopes and ambitions, limited only by their real interests and ability. This ranges from the student who aspires to do graduate in pure mathematics or engineering, to the student whose normal use of mathematics would be limited to those concepts needed to manage economical and efficient homes. The parallel programs are offered (14 terms) with appropriate aims, objectives and content. In addition. judgement transfer points are provided so that the student, with the aid of his counselor, may select those best fitted to his needs and abilities. Now. hear fh«t! FOREIGN LANGUAGE DEPARTMENT. language department The language department consists of six teachers who teach four languages, including French. Italian. Latin and Spanish. It seeks to acquaint the pupil not only with the language, but also the customs and traditions of the various countries. It adds to the cultural background and general knowledge of the students through its instructional courses and various activities, as well as through its language activities program such as foreign language broadcasts, clubs. T. V programs, foreign exchange students, films and many other activities. physical education The program of the Physical Education Department at Barringer High School is based chiefly upon one idea; that each student should develop himself physically while learning to grow in sportsmanship and character through competitive and cooperative sports and athletic activities. Gym classes for the girls includes folk, square and modern dancing to develop body poise and coordination as well as calisthenics, soft ball, and badminton. Soccer, weight lifting, military drill, body building exercises, rope and ring work, volleyball and basketball make up the major part of the boys' gym program. This is done by listening, singing, composing or actually, playing a musical instrument. Keeping up to date with the world of music is a requisite for the student. There are many choral groups open to all students; the orchestra which is very active in all school activities, and the Blue Jackets also afford many opportunities to everyone There are also instrumental classes where the student receives two lessons a week on any chosen instrument free of charge. Nick Maria, vice president; Mayor Leo P. Carlin; Ronald Lanzara. president; Phyllis Mai on no. secretary. mayor's message to seniors Permit me to extend heartiest congratulations to the members of the Class of 1958 and to express warmest wishes for every success on the path that lies ahead. Participation in the communal activities of the city in which one lives, civic-wise, culturally and in all other avenues of endeavor, is a definite responsibility of citizenship; and youth's future in the New Newark will depend in the greatest rtieasure upon the extent to which that responsibility has been discharged. Our City is now passing through a period of revitalization, leading to much wider horizons. and our youth has a very definite stake in that undertaking. We depend upon our young men and women to do their share in helping to bring this program for a New Newark to fruition and fulfillment. Their cooperation will not only help to carry forward the program of a new and greater Newark but it will also help provide for our youth a better and happier community life. Go forward and the best of luck. LEO P. CARLIN Mayor 72 senior homerooms ... on parade Homeroom 26 — Goe. Mom it wes e tough bottle, but Mr .
