We were all comforted by the many familiar faces we saw. Finally the doors were opened and we entered the hallowed halls of the third oldest high school in the United States. The auditorium was the setting of our meeting with the man we would grow to admire and love. Doc” Saylor. Maps were distributed and we really needed them to keep from getting lost. Were we surprised to find that there wasn't any pink elevator and that all the tickets we bought were no good. Relief came when we discovered that the Freshmen didn't really have to polish all those trophies on the bridge. Latin and Algebra introduced themselves to us and we soon became the best of friends (ha! ha! ha!). Johnny and Alex joined the ' Blue Jackets ' and became permanent members. Finally schedules became routine and homework didn't bother us (who did it!). Summer vacation came and went, we returned to school, received our schedules, and the routine started again because by now we were used to high school Then one day someone happened to look at the calender and discovered that a whole year in Barringer had passed. Gee. only three more to go. It was another cold day in February but this time it was 1954. when a timid bunch of students I5 entered B H. S. for the first time These were the Sophomores from Webster Junior High School, but everyone soon became fast friends. New subjects again mysteriously appeared on our schedule cards. We experimented with Biology and some even got up enough nerve to disect a frog. Angles and curves presented themselves in the troublesome form of Geometry, but did we have fun in Miss Wilsey’s class. Around Easter time many of our girls could be found downtown collecting money for crippled children. The fad became taking trips (anything to get out of school for a day) so the Sophomore class went to the Bronx Zoo with the Science Club, and to the Paper Mill Playhouse to see Oklahoma”. It was around this time that Pearl and Diane tried out for and made All-City Radio dramatics class. Gee. did the fire bells ring often because of all those bomb scares we had. The Acropolis” needed some shrewed businesswomen to run the paper so Arlene became Sales Manager. Millie became Business Manager and Virginia began her career of writing as Editor. And how about those Biology projects we had to have for Miss Schneider, the museum really got mobbed by all our budding geniuses. Second year Latin was a panic with Madame Carleu and Cherchez La Femme , our thudding bodies were the best ever heard in Barringer, ask anyone in the class. For the second time someone happened to look at the calender and was surprised to find that our second year in Barringer had gone. Gee. only two more to go. Cheering tryouts opened our Junior year and were we proud when Jeanne made it. the only one from our class. Junior Achievement sponsored a trip to Bear Mountain. New York and four of our girls went, loaded down with ice skates and cases, but little did anyone know that the cases were filled with food. The Student Council needed help so Frank was elected Vice President and Pearl became recording secretary. Charlie became the third member of our class to join the Blue Jackets . Tryouts for Mother Was A Freshman found Virginia a successful member of the all-star cast. The After-Math Club took its annual trip to the Paper Mill Playhouse and many of us saw South Pacific . The Mambo Section of the Blue Jackets boasted four of our girls, Arlene. Marlene and Dolores, with Betty calling the steps. Physics almost had our Einstein class stumped and those experiments (ugh!). Speaking of Physics. Mr. Lerncr really was brave when he volunteered to take the Science Club to New York to visit the Planetarium, and the Museum of Natural History. The joking Juniors who went all agreed that they had the most fun eating lunch at the Automat. Award Assembly came and were we proud when Danny won the Most Valuable Player Trophy. Then another summer vacation came and went. Back to school and work. Frank really took the prize when he came back to school with a cast on his 5 leg. but of course a second prize had to be awarded when Warren broke his leg. Football season went by in a flash. We lost the traditional Thanksgiving Day game to East Orange but won the City Championship. We almost had a Junior dance, but . . . Christmas vacation passed and the New Year started. Another Award Assembly arrived and we realized that we would be the next class to take the 4A seats. Gee. only one more year to go. Finally our rings arrived and with Frank. Johnny, Millie and Rachel as our officers we really became Seniors. 273 was almost broken up but such a protest arose from the members of the homeroom that 273 became Mrs. Gill’s again. Virginia was Editor-in-Chief of the magazine. Arlene and Diane were editors with Jerry and Charlie as assistant editors of the Acropolis'’. In spite of a near blizzard our 4B dance, the Leap Year Frolic” was held and was a hugh success. Betty left to set up her home, and Pat played the Cloves with Arlene heading the group as captain. You sure could tell a hope-to-be cheerleader by the groans when they had to climb stairs, but in the end three of our girls made it, Kathy, Pat, and Diane, and Jeanne became our brand new Co-Captain. Cheaper By The Dozen was presented, with Virginia in the cast again. National Honor Elections soon rolled around and holding candles, Arlene, Marlene, Dorlores. RoseMarie. Millie. Modris. Frank. Anthony. Charlie. Virginia, Jerry, Arlene, and Diane marched in. There must have been a bargain sale on drivers licenses because it seemed like almost everyone had one . . . Grace you did a beautiful job on Jack’s car door. The Hot-Rod Club was soon formed and the only requirement was one ticket. Betty and Eleanor tried for, and made the All-State Chorus. Chemistry lab turned out to be a lot of fun when making those smelly gases, and it was really funny when Jerry singed his hair with the Bunsen Burner. Danny again won the Most Valuable Player Trophy and made the All-City and All-County teams. Double lunches no longer being the fad. nine girls |Oined the double breakfast club at 7:45 a.m. with Miss Bell. We almost had a 4B-4A Basketball game but 'oops’I didn't mean to mention that. The yearbook staff was organized with Millie-Editor-in-Chief, Virgmia-Make-up Editor, Diane-Features, Charlie-Sports. Dolores-Art. Betty and Arlene-Co-Busmess. Jerry-Activities, Phyllis-Research. Corrine and Barbara-Co-Personals. Jean-Typing, Pat-Snapshots, and Grace as Secretary. Everyone trotted down to take graduation pictures and when the proofs arrived many wished they hadn't. Award Assembly came and we proudly took the 4A seats. At least, we could see! June 23rd our unofficial class outing was held at Valley Springs, and. then, vacation. September soon rolled around and school started as we returned proudly as 4A’s. Pep assembly was held with four of our girls up there cheering and football season got off to a flying start with Frank, Buck, Joe. Richie, Warren, Anthony, Mike. Frank, and Jerry in there playing. The third game of the season we played Memorial from West New York, and never had it been a wetter night, as many of the students can tell you. National Honor Elections were held with Charlie becoming President, Jerry as Vice President, Virginia as Secretary, and Diane as Treasurer. Kathy. Connie, and Louie were the only 4A members being initiated. Promotions were seen m the Acropolis office for Virginia became Student Adviser, Arlene took over the Magazine, with Charlie and Jerry becoming Editors. Our jazzy skit was held the morning of October 26th. followed by our 4A dance, the Moonlight Festival”, with Johnny as leader of the Blue Jackets”. It seemed like the most popular fellow at the dance was George . Hallowe'en produced two of the most beautiful girls Barringer has ever seen, Warrens and Geraldine. Again we saw another change on the Acropolis staff when Diane took over the Barney Column. Then came a big five day week-end, and boy could we use it. Were we proud when B H. S. again took the City Championship in football undefeated, untied, and scored upon in only one game. The traditional Thanksgiving Day game was held with our rivals East Orange at their stadium, and once again Barringer bowed to their rivals. We returned to school and were fitted for our caps and gowns and it was about this time that we really realized just how close graduation was, our days at Barringer were numbered. Christmas vacation passed and the New Year arrived. Plans for the prom were all set. And finally January 30th arrived, the night we had all been waiting four years for. Proudly we marched onto the stage and received our diplomas. We bid farewell to our friends and walked out into the night and into life with the words Truth, Honor, and Light” in our hearts. 57 CLASS WILL We the Class of January 1957 being of sound mind and body and declaring all previous wills to be null, void, and invalid do hereby make these bequests to the following unsuspecting persons: Miss Schneider—another class like ours. The Big Blue came through the 1956 Football season with the highly prized City League Title. Our boys illustrated good clean play throughout the season, winning all fivo of their city league contests and beating Orange. This hard play wasn't enough for state champion Memorial of W N. Y. or the Plainfield and East Orange elevens. Barringer was well represented in the All City” selections with ten of our players picked as the outstanding boys in the city schools. Mainstay in the Barringer for ward wall was All City tackle Jerry Colatrella. Our opening game was against the powerful Plainfield squad. Spearheaded by fullback Dom Dcssino, Plainfield managed to score two last period touchdowns to edge the Big Blue 13-7. After Barringer fullback Warren Bongo scored in the first quarter both teams were held scoreless. In the last period Dessino broke loose for two touchdowns and ran for their only extra point. Barringers touchdown resulted when quick thinking Frank Buckworth grabbed a loose ball and ran over for our only score. Barringer ripped winless Weequahic 39-0 in our third contest. The game was marked by hard running and good passing resulting in seven touchdowns. Bruce Humphrey ran well in this game with Carl Farrell pounding out good gains also. In our fifth game the Rough Riders of West Side met defeat at the hands of title bound Barringer by a 19-0 score. Long runs by Farrell and Frankie Vitolo made the Big Blue corral wary back. difference here, with a Vitolo to Sivertsen pass resulting in the third Barringer T.D. Barringer just managed to beat an inspired Central team 13-12 insuring at least a tie for the city league championship. The deciding factor was the charging Big Blue line which blocked Central’s attempted conversion giving Barringer a one point edge. Barringers 27-0 win over East Side gave the Big Blue their second consecutive City League Crown Good line play enabled our fleetfooted backs to make three long runs for touchdowns and to go from a few yards Out for a fourth score Barringer’s speedy backfield scored on four long runs to Beat Orange 39-13. Dr. Roger B Saylor. His wise judgement and willingness to help has won the admiration of all his students. He has encouraged us to develop potentialities to become better future citizens, parents, and leaders of the community. After years as the guiding light of Barringer High School, he retires from his profession to take his place among the legendary figures of our Alma Mater. The warmth and glow of his energetic personality will linger in Barringer's hallowed halls for future generations to admire. Fine men can lead, but only great men can inspire ... as does our revered principal. t • 1947, Prineipol the Years Uhntt Xtathtr nd Cu Advj, . 1921, Sticnce Tcech.r 1925. Yearbook Ad.iser 19J3. Greater things are in store for all of us in the future. Advancements will be made by you who are modern pioneers. It is the spirit of the pioneer which has made this country a great country. May each of you be a modern pioneer. Ephraim Eisenberg VICE PRINCIPAL You are the heirs of all ages, in the foremost files of flme.,, Carrying the accumulated experience and knowledge of the past and the responsibility of applying this knowledge to the complex problems of today can be a burden. Or it can be a challenge. From the earliest days we have been a nation of pioneers responding to the lure of the unknown and the unconquered. Today's conquests are no longer merely physical but include also unexplored and unconquered areas of vast and crucial social and international maladiustments and of staggering fields of scientific and philosophic developments. May you have the strength and courage to respond to the age-old American challenge. Have the elder races halted Do they droop and end their lesson, wearied over there beyond the seas? We fake up the task eternal, and the burden and the lesson. Pioneers! O Pioneers! 4 M. Blau Yearbook Aft -ter W. Schulman M. Smith Cists Adviser Cists Adviser L. Nicest Build C LASS III n II It 1 It seems like it was only yesterday that we first walked into Barringer, There in the auditorium, we first became acquainted with Dr. Saylor and made many lasting friendships. As freshmen, we found if hard to find the classrooms, and with the help of the seniors, never found them. We also learned the bridge” wasn't something in the park. The last straw, however, was Mr. Merkin’s occupations tests, when we found we were qualified to be garbage collectors. The biggest thrill of our freshman year was our first pep assembly, and sitting there joining in the cheers made us feel as if we really were part of Barringer. As sophomores, we were introduced to Biology, and all the girls could do for weeks was talk about those worms . We all enjoyed ourselves. I'm sure, translating Caesar in our Latin classes. Our wide-eyed girls sat at football games watching every step the twirlers and cheerleaders made, with great hope of soon taking their places. At last we were upper classmen. We returned to school with our Olympic Park tans, and settled down into the school routine. Pride in our class grew as we began to organize We were very happy when we learned Mr. Shul-man and Miss M Smith were to be our class advisers, and we elected Jack. Richie. Jodie and Grace to lead our class. We decided not to wait until we were seniors to launch our class into the social swing, so we planned a 3A Social. Who could forget the sight of Mrs. Shulman teaching the boys how to polka in the girl’s gym. Our Social was a success and we looked forward to our senior class dances. A sudden disease struck our class called ringitis and nobody could walk by the Juniors without looking at their class rings Nma, Joan, Joe, Jodie and Dotty were elected to be the executive staff of the Student Council, and it semed as if the Juniors were really coming into their own. We could scarcely believe the day we had waited for so long was finally here. We were Seniors! It seemed our classmates were everywhere and in everything. At the football games. Nancy. Ann. Jeanine. Theresa, Gaytha. Barbara, Teddy. Jodie, and Dorothy showed us how good cheering should be done, and drew raves from everyone. Arlene. Janet, Phyllis. Nma. Louise, Dorothy, and Mane, caused quite a stir every time they did their twirling cha-cha routine on the field. But if was our great football team and their perfection on the field that really aroused the admirat on of everyone. Bruce. Tommy. Johnny, Joe, Kenny. Cal. Richie S.. Richie M . and Rocky sparked the team on to victory and brought home the City Champs Crown. Our excitement turned to another channel as we began to prepare for our first dance, the 4B Fall Fantasy. With our hilarious skit, homemade cookies and beautiful decorations, our dance couldn't have been anything but a success. The b'ogest thrill of all was when we marched into the auditorium and took our 4A seats. What, no poles? As everyone said it would, the time just flew by. Soon another song was being sung by the senior , it was called do vou want to buy an ad? Yes. our yearbook was on the way and it promised to be a success. Our 4A dance will always be remembered as our last dance and the best one we ever attended. , At the Aloha, the senior girls wore lets to carry out the Hawaiian motif. There suddenly semed to be an awful lot of cars around Barringer, and if you looked to see who almost ran you over, you would see the senior girls were the proud holders of drivers' licenses. Norma and Lenny became our class chauffeurs and there were only minor casualties. Spring was in the air and the love bug was certainly working overtime Rings on chains were cropping up among many of the senior girls. If this wasn't bad enough, everyone had to watch out for detective Shultzie De Santis who was our Barney editor. The night of June 19 came all too soon, and there wasn't a dry face among the seniors on our beautiful graduation night. Not only were we sad at the thought of leaving Barringer, but our beloved principal, Dr. Roger B. Saylor, retired with our graduating class. But there was no lime for tears the night after graduation. The girls, beautifully dressed m their gowns, and their dream men garbed in tuxedos had a wonderful time at the senior prom held in tho Belmont Plaza Hotel. New York. This night, as we gathered with our friends for the last time, we wondered what the future held, but know wc would never forget our high school days at Barringer High School. 68 I'll Will MS lir THE PIONEERS It's a warm day in August. 1980. and the all-star class of June 1957. is having its annual reunion Everyone is gathered in Barnngertown, the small western town the Modern Pioneers established Suddenly there is a lot of excitement in the crowd and everyone turns to see Jimmy DiNola noisily driving a truck on which there is a sign reading, EAT AT BIASE'S. There's some more LA C t excitement when Jimmy parks his truck and bangs into the Cadillac belonging to the famous movie star. Lenny Caruso. whose movies can be seen at the Barnngertown Deluxe Movie Theater. 125 seats! Overhead we sec an airplane coming in for a landing, and after landing on the roof of the Lucky Dollar Hotel, (trapdoor service.) we see the pilot is none other than John Palmieri. and the air hostess is Teddy Agniesko. holding her favorite pet rabbit. Teddy is helping out a group of teachers and we see they arc Maria Pici, Mary Ann Bryan. Arlene LaBaliva and Caytha luli-ano. Sgt. Andre Ficello wants to put a ticket on the airplane for overtime parking, but Lawyer Elaine Lupo is talking him Out of it. All this has made everyone thirsty, so everyone is going over to the Horseshoe Saloon. Bartender Joan DeSantis is giving out the drinks and trying to get some stories on her old classmates for her magazine. Confidentially. Her ace reporter, Dorothy Smith, is talking to Rita Durange. who owns a fabulous penthouse in that Eastern wilderness. New York Everyone quiets down as music starts and we all turn to see Charlie Sousa leading Ronnie De Maria, Anton Pierce, Wesley Mostello, Joe Vaccarelli. George Knecht, Albert Tahmoush and Edward Benz. An excellent floor show follows as Lucy Pappas dances. Calyie Perrie sings and Frances Molmaro tells some jokes. After the floor show, some more guests arrive and loin the fun. We see dress designer Marie Martino with her special model. Rosemary DeTore. We see Rosemary is writing a letter to her husband who is a Marine recruiting officer. Mrs Gerald Grasso I Geraldine Glaricurno) causes quite a stir as she comes in with her 12 black-haired children. Everybody is waiting for Geremia Barone, the first Lady-President of the United States, to arrive. Accompanying her will be Secretary of State, Joseph Martino. Something is coming down the street, and as we rush to the door we see it’s the Cadillac Stagecoach. The stagecoach is equipped with power horses and power reins. Up m the driver's seat we see Norma Petton. driving and Nicky Meola along side of her. ringing the Bermuda Bells. Stepping out of the stagecoach we see Mr. and Mrs. Richie Sivertsen (The former Nancy Schick). Nancy is worrying how her six dogs, three cats, and two canaries stood the trip. All attention turns to Mayor Mario D'Elia as he announces there will be a contest. Phyllis Pallino. who is private secretary to John Saxon, is chosen Queen of the Flowers. It’s not too surprising since she's won for the last 23 years. Gerald Chicco is taking a picture of Phyllis and sheriff Richie Maiella is happily posing with her. Across the street we see Palccco's Dancing School, and Janet Palecco is standing out in front of it handing out advertisements Pete Cicconc is running around looking for lost sunglasses, but feels better when Janet offers him a free dancing lesson for only $5. The aroma of hamburgers reminds us we're hungry, so we all go over to Belottis Luncheonette, of course owned by Richie Belotti. Ann lannaccone is selling the hamburgers. Theresa Contursi is giving out the soda and Toni Par-migiarto is sweeping the floor, (she's Mrs. Belotti.) Outside, Jeanine Benenati and Mary Jo Yanuzzi are showing Frank Di Biano and Tommy Landolfi how to lift weights. Dorothy De Santis and Jodie Nittoli are cheering them on. Galloping down the street is Angela Raimo and Valerie Cetrulo. who own a summer camp. They stop to look in Lola Carnovale's dress store and find Louise Daniel modeling the clothes. Next door we see Anthony Vitello s store for men. and Frank Di Sessa and Joe Pascuco. (two teachers), are gazing into the storewmdow. Everyone turns when we hear a band playing and find that our class president. Jack Sauchclli. has arrived and with Jack's arrival our reunion is complete. We will leave this happy little scene and return to the present. May every person in the class find success and happiness in whatever his future may be. 69 Mary Ann Bryan .... wasn't playing her violin? Wesley Mostello..........................wasn't arguing?
