It brings to the reader every emotion from joy to sorrow, every type of news event, sport, feature, editorial, comics, and social event. Its great value to every student is therefore obvious. We. the Class of January 1953. have therefore chosen the newspaper as the theme of our yearbook. We sincerely hope that just like a newspaper our yearbook will bring back to the graduate, recollections of the happy as well as the perhaps unpleasant moments in his high school career; and as the years go by it will become dearer to him. recreating a sentimental smile or the faint trace of a tear. For these have been the golden years of our youth. Dr. Roger B. Sayl or Principal The American newspaper is such an important part of our daily lives that we would be lost without it. We depend upon it for accurate information about world happenings, local news, sports, editorials, advertisements and many other topics, not forgetting the comics. It meets the needs of every American. The picture section is important to those who find reading difficult, but is also of interest to most good readers. In no country of the world are writers and publishers freer to cartoon. criticize and comment on public affairs and officials than in the United States. The American Newspaper is an institution which is the life blood of our democracy. Mr. Ephraim Eisenberg Vice Principal AVE ATQUE VALE was the old Roman phrase: “Hail and farewell! I will reverse the sentiment and say to you: “Farewell and Hail! Farewell to childhood and growing pains. Farewell to high school, to its joys and disappointments. and final accomplishments. Farewell to years of growth and anticipation. And hail to your future. May it be full of rich experience, meaningful activities, and satisfying achievements. So hail; and may you fare well! 4 writ (Evening JVctwJ ESDAY, DECEMBER 9, 1952 ALMA MATER LJ £fj I i_-q-Lr'T 1 i Temple groy ond costle hold. Ma.n Floor Section III FEATURES Sophomore Year Ah . . . Barringer at last. After spending a year in either Webster or McKinley, we finally arrived . . . Who can forget our first day in school? We plodded through the snow to our Alma Mater, met in the auditorium and were sent to our new homerooms. This started our career in Barringer . . . Soon afterward we learned to cope with seniors, surprising faucets, and UP' stairways. The first day here, while the girls were eager to get out and flirt with the good-looking seniors, we sat for hours and made out schedule cards, forms for tardiness, and class slips . . . Snowy February and windy March flew by and spring was upon us. Keep-ng our minds on studies instead of vacation was harder and harder to do . . . Career day was a novelty to us. too. All day we attended conferences about our chosen careers. The relief from school work felt pretty good, too . . . May and June passed quickly until the vacation was here. How we enjoyed our newly acquired leisure . . . September found us recalling the wonderful moments of a glorious summer. . . We were proud of our football team that year Central and East Orange fell before us and we copped the City title. Junior Year w A P ? f ived hca jmm oor Bils been jx since t 1. will J00 for close I e than ture 85 howcv Mink K: «lions have Thank goodness that we were juniors now. Being the babies of the school wasn't exactly what the class wished for. . . In the spring Pat Vreeland. Eleanor Claricurzio. and Dot Hopp made the cheering squad . . . We finally got good seats in the auditorium . . . Before we knew it. exams were over, the graduates were gone and summer was here again . . . Boy! did our heads swell when we became 3A's . . . Our football team met defeat in the fall, but our contributions: Bob Filoramo. Tony Marciano, and Bert Amatucci made us feel good . . . Bobby and Tony got their major B's at the award assembly in January ... In December. Miss Gray presented two one-act plays and of course Anthony Frascella and Jerry Otto did fine jobs in their roles. Putting on plays is some job and we felt good about reviving this fine art. Senior Year The fruition of our dreams was fulfilled when February '52 came. Our heads were high and our noses were tilted when we marched into the auditorium the first day of the term . . Our first dance. Clover Capers, was held in March and what a success it was! . . . Anthony Frascella ran for class president and won ... At the end of March we and the dramatics class presented Double Door . For three nights our Alfred Lunts were hard at work making good work of the play ... In April the dare-devils of 95 braved the upset when their ceiling fell in . . . The spring concert was a great success and Mr. Argand was a picture of pride ... In June a class picnic was held in Linden and a good time was had by all (see the pictures). Need we explain our feelinas when we came back as 4A's in September? Finally we were B T 0's Big Time Operators). We laughed at the juvenile freshmen who invaded the school (we were never like that, or so we thought) ... we tried to establish in the minds of the underclassmen, whom they were to respect . . . The honor seats in the auditorium were ours, but our small class only filled three complete rows . . . Our football team did better than we expected. Garfield and Wcequahic succumbed but our annual rivalry with Central saw us lose ... At the end of the season we discovered that we were tied with Weequahic for second place in the all-city league . . . We even managed to pull through Mr. Ammarrell's history tests. Our 4A dance was held on November 26. as usual it was a success. Then on January 28th. we. the class of '52. received our diplomas from our alma mater and all that was left of four years of training was a wealth of knowledge and many pleasant, unforgettable memories. formulated sue- ’ re K, nan e uaca a very il promotional ntaiu and ad- to be taken on the jfuture ores U «t contain ism to keep th -:r product ir, Pjf rue lure tf Mme material , often overcome amo cvu icu mm . The Music Whirl Our Spring Concert which is held annually, is becoming a famed and successful tradition. The music for this gala night consists of classical and popular music, solos and group songs. Each of the Glee clubs and the band and orchestra perform both individually and collectively. Months before the presentation, preparation for the music festival is begun. Under the able direction of Mr. Argand. Mrs. O'Loughlin and Mr. Greenfield, the groups (well-trained and talented) give a performance that is a credit to their school and their instructors. Before we knew it our first Barringer dance was upon us. We discovered in Bio that antennae are found elsewhere besides on TV sets. From geometry we learned the difference between concentric and eccentric, in English we wrestled with hyperboyle—and we were bewilderment personified! Remember when we ■discovered the Blue, got our first crush on a senior, and made the Super every cycle? . . . Through football pep assemblies, the Thanksgiving game, and our first award assembly we were introduced to the age old customs of Barringer and came to realize what a wonderful school it was. That year Barringer terminated a glorious grid season by walking off with the Old Guard Trophy for the twenty-third time, and tying West Side for the City Championship . . . Who can ever forget the Phil Rizzuto assembly when we were all late for Latin cause we waited for his autograph, or the Latin skit in which Bob Zinn even stumped some of the seniors with his inquiry, “Are you an octo-genarean? . . . We began to participate in activities very early in our sophomore year. Imagine our surprise when Viola Johnson, a member of our class, got third prize in the school talent show! . . . Remember how big the science club was then? Carmic Martin gave Miss Schneider a turtle as a peace offering for misbehaving in class . . . How about those twenty-seven minute lunch periods in the middle of a major! ... In the Spring we were busy climbing trees for our leaf notebooks and making a good impression on the Evaluation Committee. We all had the opportunity to vote for Student Council President . . . Confederate flags adorned student vehicles . . . some of us even went to the Senior Prom! . . . “Too Young was on everyone’s lips . . . Summer was upon us and school was dismissed. Junior Year! We were no longer on the outside looking in. nor were we merely scapegoats, shunned by upperclassmen. We were upperclassmen, and with the addition of freshmen to the school once again, our position was even heightened . . . Physics and chem hit us like an H-bomb. Everyone was a “Zombie . . . Forty-five minute lunch periods returned and pupils began to gain weight! . . . We met Muzzey . who we discovered was to haunt us for the rest of our days as BHS . . . Who’ll ever forget “Mr. Bruder's history class ? (Didn't we give him a hard time!) or Miss Walston’s original compositions: Yellow . Something Small”, etc. . . . We began to participate more and more in assembly programs . . . We watched Barringer beat E. O. 25-27 Thanksgiving Day. breaking the tie between the rival schools . . . The dramatics class organized, and under the direction of that unforgettable personality Miss Clara Mae Gray, put on “A Wedding”, with Anne Rossilli and Barbara Sheppard, both juniors . . . We had a lovely Christmas assembly, with carols and Bible excerpts, climaxing in a brilliant Halleujah Chorus . . . The new year found Laura Kammel half smothered under layers of face putty in dramatics, all of us having fun with Mr. Kaplonski (remember when he misplaced the history test!) and rehearsals well under way for the Double Door . . . Zelda was beyond surprise when her friends staged a birthday party in the cafeteria complete with cake and trimmings . . . Club names adorned varsity jackets . . . Wasn't home nursing a riot! . . . Barringer had an extremely successful Career Day . . . Double Door” had a three night run . . . We were measured for our rings . . . With all juniors running for Student Council President: five girls and two boys. Barringer bowed to its first lady president. Edith Travisano. a junior B. Joan Gerhauser became treasurer and Carol Pompilio. recording-secretary . . . There were cheers and tears when the results of cheerleading tryouts were posted, but our class was proud of its final representation on the squad . . . We elected our yearbook staff . . . Joan Gerhauser was chosen as representative to Girls' State . . . How we struggled 44 History through exams: French conjugation, “infinite decreasing geometric progression”, the “Rising of the New West , “Beowulf’, and then, at last, we were . . . Seniors! The yearbook staff was restless at first, but after much discussion on style of personals and a suitable theme, we finally settled down to work . . . Vecchione. Corrigan, and Eng became our class leaders . . . Barbara Sheppard. Betty Ann Senerschia. and Helen Eng became Acropolis editors. . . Stanley Mueller ordered a ’52 ring! . . . Remember the very touching Columbus Day program? ... If we hadn't bought Barringer sweatshirts in sophomore year we got them as seniors, and wore them to all the football games . . . Did we protest when it was announced that periods would no longer be omitted for assembly progams! ... All the girls sported sweaters and white collars . . . We were overjoyed when President Truman came to Newark (with a note from home we were excused from school). All we ever saw was the backs of heads . . . Our 4B dance, the Goblin's Hobble”, was a huge success! . . . Eisenhower won the presidential election in spite of the BHS straw vote favoring Stevenson ... All sorts of political puns were circulated . . . Some of us were (un) fortunate enough to be in Mr. Ammarell's infamous fourth period class. What a crazy combo of characters! . . . Creative Writing was a new experience in expression, and we enjoyed experimenting with cinquains and hokkus . . . We were generally found around Mrs. Burley's office, and not always for disciplinary reasons. (We had by this time learned the art of escaping detection.) We applied everywhere from UCLA to Newark State . . . Thirteen of us were elected to National Honor . . . Barry King was our handsome drum major . . . Helen. Vi. Max. and Erma cheered, as Nickie Saulle. Joe Pasqua, and Patsy Forte led our team on to victory Thanksgiving Day. Man. did we show E. 0! . . . Before we knew it we all had part time jobs and the Christmas rush was upon us . . . Loretta Malanga was seen knitting argyles in study hall . . . Miss Farquhar's homeroom put up a tree and took it down the same morning! . . . The girls wore tinsel, holly, tree ornaments and mistletoe in their hair . . . School was dismissed for ten days. It wasn't a white Christmas but it was a merry one. We had to go to Rockefeller Center to skate. “Ah. Wilderness! heck. Omar Kha am has never seen New York! . . . Some of us had extended vacations, spent with virus influenza . . . Yearbook pictures were taken and everyone was unhappy with his proofs . . . We were victorious in the 4B-4A game . . . We watched award assembly with keener interest, and took our seats as senior A s . . . With the beginning of the 4A term we were wrapped up in social and financial obligations, hounded by yearbook agents and homeroom treasurers . . . Mr. Merkin introduced us to a new approach to history—and we liked it! Dr. Sterner loaded us down with vocabulary, and Joe Brasco became lugubrious” in Miss Gray's class . . . Homerooms 35 and 61 vied for the distinction of being the most unmanageable. When 35 was banned from assembly each member (including Miss Farquhar) bore his disgrace in the form of a badge with the numerals 35 . . . We won the 4B-4A game again! . . . Carol Pompilio was chosen for the DAR award . . . The announcement of top ten was awaited with great anxiety . . . National Honor initiations for nine 4As were held . . . the prom, business, and graduation committees got to work . . . Carol Pompilio captured yearbook editorship. Barbara Sheppard became assistant . . . Mary Anne Durante. Jerry Pacillo, Joe Bruzzio and Donald Barer entertained us in “Arsenic and Old Lace” . . . Popularity Polls were distributed . . . May was filled with the Spring Concert, the track meet, and the “Spring Swing , our 4A dance . . . June 5 was the Student Council square dance . . . Finally the dramatics class tried its hand at a three act comedy, and the senior class applauded Mary Ann Durante. Jerry Pacillo, Joe Bruzzio and Donald Barer in “Arsenic and Old Lace . Barringer’s overall record of 1 1 won and 6 lost against some of the County's roughest adversaries was significant of the team's capabilities despite its apparent lack of experience. Fencing Sal Gengaro and Don Barer were Barringer s co-captains of this year's Fencing Team. Barringer reached the semi-finals of the National Interscholastic Fencing Tournament at New York University. Sal made the starting team in his junior year, Don, in his senior year. They were the mainstays of the team throughout the season. Bowli The season was moderately successful as Barringer finished third in the City League composed of all the high schools. Our high spot of the season was our victory over South Side Five who eventually won the City Championship.
