Editorial What is time? Let’s call it the past, the present and the future. Some people seem to think that living is absorbing all three rings of the circus of time at once, never noticing the unquestionable, unchanging order in which they parade. Stop a minute to consider; the only factor of time you CAN see is the present. The past is a dead tomorrow or an exhausted today; a bottle of spilt milk that not even the cat can lap up. The future is nothing more tangible than the distant optical meeting of two parallel lines; you feel the meeting is always nearer as you walk ahead, yet you never reach it. Today is supreme! Today is the only living time! Only the happenings of today—now—this instant can you grasp and say, This is live action; this is being. The child says, When I can go to school ; the student says, When I grow up ; the adult says, When I retire ; and as the retired middle-ager looks back at it all, a nebulous memory forms the shroud of a lifetime barely nibbled at. In much the same way, life also passes by the one who lives in the past. I should have taken physics last semester , I don’t like the suit I bought last week , I don’t like the typewriter I bought last year. He’s so busy worrying about the past that he hasn’t time to live today well enough to profit by his mistakes; his neglected today will be another regret tomorrow. Emerge from your cave! Burst forth with the glorious miracle that is YOU! Start a flood of your accomplishments, bring out the ability, the personality, the effort that lies dormant within you; know the sweet fatigue of achievement. Think, said Dante, that this day will never dawn again. Grasp it! Live it! Use it! For it is the only time you have. Do we say it is unnecessary to provide for the future? On the contrary, today well-lived is the best possible profound effect upon the upper floors. As you awaken tomorrow morning, remember that you arc breathing the air of a day that God considered so singular, so exclusive, that He will never have it repeated. Know that it is YOUR day; yours to greet your friends, to grow, to breathe, to thrill to the sun and the stars, to laugh, to love, to live. Your day of which to make a splendid yesterday, or a bitter tomorrow; to create an inner security, or an attitude of bereavement. You can forget last night’s homework if you do tonight's. You can forget that you were rude yesterday, if your manners are admirable today. You can forget that you were a dullard yesterday, if you sparkle today. Remember to: Focus all being and energy on today; for through such will your fabulous future become a magnificent past. 4 THE EDITORS

When I remember how the years have fled On winged feet to Time’s age-old abode, And how I gazed in silent, solemn dread Up Future’s long and winding, unknown road; When I recall how awe-filled were my eyes When first I looked on Barringer’s dark walls; What joy was mine, what pleasant, sweet, surprise When first I wandered through her ancient halls, My happy heart beats loud the drums of pride That She, wdth outstretched arms would welcome me, And all my dread, my joy did cast aside, And, all my fears did quickly cease to be. O Teacher, famed of Honor, Truth and Light, Shine on, and pierce the darkness of the night. LORETTA HOWARD 3
