■m Freedom of the press has, to a large extent, made possible our education, so therefore it is fitting that we should dedicate this book to that instrument of knowledge. A free press is too often confused with what is prescribed by law in our Constitution. It is more than an American law or tradition, for it has been in existence since the beginnings of hieroglyphics and it will continue to the end of civilization. It is, perhaps, the most important instrument in the cumulative processes of learning, each generation studying through the press or its counterparts, the fund of knowledge of its ancestors and recording by the same method its own contribution to that fund. A free press has been the means by which knowledge and truth have spanned the gap of time, linking the generations in such a way that the learning of one generation becomes the knowledge of the next, with education being the transmission of that knowledge from the printed page to the understanding mind. Now we have finished a part of our education. Some of us will stop here and some will continue, but the realization remaining with us all is that education is the review of past achievements, and it is for us to add to those achievements, and at the same time to the construction of civilization whose foundation is knowledge and whose greatest support is Freedom of the Press.
