THE ATHENAEUM PUBLISHED BY THE JANUARY CLASS OF 1950 OF BARRINGER HIGH SCHOOL NEWARK, NEW JERSEY ■m Freedom of the press has, to a large extent, made possible our education, so therefore it is fitting that we should dedicate this book to that instrument of knowledge. A free press is too often confused with what is prescribed by law in our Constitution. It is more than an American law or tradition, for it has been in existence since the beginnings of hieroglyphics and it will continue to the end of civilization. It is, perhaps, the most important instrument in the cumulative processes of learning, each generation studying through the press or its counterparts, the fund of knowledge of its ancestors and recording by the same method its own contribution to that fund. A free press has been the means by which knowledge and truth have spanned the gap of time, linking the generations in such a way that the learning of one generation becomes the knowledge of the next, with education being the transmission of that knowledge from the printed page to the understanding mind. Now we have finished a part of our education. Some of us will stop here and some will continue, but the realization remaining with us all is that education is the review of past achievements, and it is for us to add to those achievements, and at the same time to the construction of civilization whose foundation is knowledge and whose greatest support is Freedom of the Press. By a majority vote several representatives were elected in each homeroom at the beginning of the senior year, and they served for a period of two terms. The power vested in this Congress, through the instrument of the Class Constitution, included the right to direct all class activities. Such projects as the selection of class ring, raising of class funds through two dances and sale of Christmas cards, class picnic and finally a senior prom were among the many activities directed by the Congress. In general, it was the guiding light of a strongly organized class. Mr. Bruder was the faculty adviser in charge of these class activities. 13 MEMBERS OF CLASS CONGRESS Home Room 33 Marie Cortes Marie Mallettc Ida Russonella Home Room 59 Patricia Megaro Sal Melilio Dolores Thomas Home Room 95 Julia Alfieri Marie DiChiara Vivian Kee Home Room 99 Celeste Carrione Michael Caputo Mary Anne Tischio John Aha J°hn ho concoct . rjrSl,rero • Wo know our class it really fine. However, Ray Merola, spokesman for the management, claims that the free jelly bean sandwiches which the company provides, more than compensate for the short lunch periods Patty Halstead, famous dietician, announced that her investigation of the matter disclosed a marked vitamin B deficiency among the workers. She said that this was probably due to the pour quality of beans used in the free sandwiches. Chemist for the company, John Aha, denied this, claiming that after many years of research he had developed the best jelly bean sandwich available, and that only the highest quality ingredients went into its manufacture. The strike is tying up business across the nation, and Governor Charles Earl has threatened to call in the state militia and take over the vital industry before any violence occurs. Marie DiChiara, Celeste Carrionc, Jeanette Salerno and Angela Trento of the Salvation Army say that if the strike doesn't end soon they will be out of business—“Bums, they say, “want jelly beans, not doughnuts with their coffee. ’W' Social Notes BENEFIT BALL HUGE SUCCESS Last night was the scene ol a 1 spectacular party given by that Fisa Maxwell ol the Oranges, Miss Mildred Caruso. Jerry Oliverie, who also earned his letter in his third year, has been a threat to opponents, with his passing, kicking, and rushing. Jerry has led the boys with TD's. FOOT Reported by BOB BON AN NO The Big Blue under the keen supervision of Mr. Anthony Naparano got off to a slow start during the 1949 season losing to All State Montclair with a score of 25-2 and to All City Central, 19-12. The news was no better the following week when we were defeated by West Side—score 13-7. Then the veteran team found themselves when they tied South Side, and defeated Weequahic by a lead of 12 points. BALL Carl Hargrave, who is the newest addition to the Big Blue , has also excelled in passing and rushing. We congratulate Carl on his fine job. These were followed by two successive victories winning from East Side and Bloomfield Tech to the tune of 19-0. Then again, a minor set back, when they lost to West Orange by a score of 41-6. We wish the team the best of luck when they play the traditional East Orange game. Joe Carnovalc our dependable center has given fine support to the team. He was active during his junior year. The team ranked high in comparison with some of the great teams the school has produced. This year, the team again looks good and we would like to wish them the best of luck in the coming season. Paul Primamore Third man on the varsity in his junior year, Paul took 1st place in the state meet, fencing on the 3rd strip. In his senior year, as co-captain and 1st man, Paul joined the ranks of many former Barringer fencers by capturing the State Championship title. He was a Major letter winner, and also received a Wreath B . Harry Zimmerman Zim made the varsity in his junior year also. In his senior year he became co-captain. Harry served as second man on the squad, and in 1949 showed his skill by placing second in the State Meet. He was a member of the 1949 State Championship team also. Harry received a Major B and a Wreath B . Richard Smith Smitty was third man on the squad in 1949. He immediately became a great help to the team. Considered by many as the best 3rd man in the state. Dick took 7th place in the State Meet, being out placed only by some of the State's best men. He received a Major B and also a Wreath B . 72 FIELD AND TRACK Henry Buchanan . . . Hank . . . came out for the track team in '48 and ran the half mile. In '49 he switched to the mile and took the city championship. He served os captain of the ...nOW ■ season for track, and he by throwing the discus, then he w tch-cd to the javelin and in the following season '49, he took fourth p ace n the City Meet. Charles Nankivcll . . . N nk . . . came out for track in 48 to throw the discus. He switched to the javelin and in his next season, 49, he took second place in the City Meet. Dan DcBenedetto . . . the '49 season was the fourth season in Danny's career as a quarter miler and he topped it off by taking the city championship. Reported by CHARLES NANKIVELL Barringer had more than its share of talent as it entered the 1949 track season. The squad showed great promise from the beginning and it wasn't long before they verified that. It was a spirited group, under Anthony Naporano, that failed to taste defeat in a single triangular meet. The big pay off came on May 19. After the Big Blue had taken an early lead the day before in the field events, it went on to a deciseve victory in the City meet. Carl Hjrgravc . . . has been out for track since attending Barringer. He has excelled in pole vaulting and took the city championship Jn '49. Don Melito . . . has been on the track team four years and has stuck to the discus. In '49 he took third place in the City Meet. 73 BATTER UP Reported by ALAN KORNFELD 1949 was a hectic season for Barringer baseball. Sam Sedi-cino replaced Joe Nerenberg at the helm, and under his guidance the Big Blue gained a fast foothold in the City League race for At Frungillo supremacy, and amidst the heat of the conflict loomed as a dark horse. Although Barringer ended up in third place, the Ridge Street nine sported a six and four record, and had given first place Central, and second place East Side a run for their money. In outside competition the Big Blue didn't fare so well managing only one victory out of six, while compiling an overall record of seven wins and nine defeats. Al made First string catcher on his first try for that position. He turned out to be a real ball-player and earned his letter in the 1949 season John Finelli John, also out for the first time, clinched the first base position. His play at first base enabled him to earn his letter. 74 OVER HILL AND DALE Henry Buchjnjn, who was elected captain of the team, performed very well in the '48 season, placing in both city and county meets, but was unable to round into tip-top shape until late in the '49 campaign. Reported by HENRY BUCHANAN Autumn returned and a spirited Barringer crosscountry team once again took to the hills and dales. Having lost two lettermen, the team was equipped with but two returning B men and a squad of only ten men. This lack in number led to a shaky start. But under the watchfulness and hard work of Coach Charles Allen, the team shaped together later in the season. Though not a powerful threat, the dales were always capable of an unpredicted upset. 75 SPORTS EVENTS B GIRLS Celeste Carrione Gloria Casey Marie DiChiara Muriel Goos Marie Mallette Edna Ross Jeanette Salerno Josephine Salvatoriello Dolores Thomas Lois Wallerstein GIRLS IN SPORTS Reported by LOIS WALLERSTEIN B GIRLS Sports activities in Barringer High School are not confined to boys only. Under the capable leadership of Miss Edythe Scalera and Mrs. Jetta Sedicino, the girls of Barringer are offered a well rounded course in physical education. It is the proud claim of this department that every girl may participate in a sport that is her favorite''! The extra curricula activities are famous for their diversity as well as their social values. The accumulation of 1200 points represents the epitome of skill in physical education. These points are awarded for the following achievements: 1 ) Gym costume preparation, 2) Sport captain, 3) Grade of A or B in class work, 4) Participation in parades, etc., 5) Participation in extra-curricular sports. Basketball is one of the most popular sports offered to girls. Interest in the game is developed during class period while techniques are taught in the after school practices. Volleyball is always fun to play and it helps to develop that attitude of team cooperation which is so essential in all phases of our school life. FOR GIRLS -1— Badminton is b a social Sport.d sets to be dei l ■ Apparatus considered the most difficult activity of the sports program. Social Dancing under the expert supervision of Miss Edythe Scalera, has taken a place of first rank in the sports program. The Rhumba, Tango, Samba, Waltz and Fox Trot are among the favorite steps taught in this special class often attended by more than a hundred pupils. Shuffleboard is a new sport in Barringer becoming very popular in a short time. The friendly rivalry that goes with the game is fun to watch. Hockey is a highly organized sport played with such great proficiency that at the end of each season a Varsity team is selected to represent the best players. ■otsla 24. Paul Primamorc When, after the start of the '49 season, the cheering squad was handicapped by one less boy, Paul worked hard and filled the gap at the Wce-quahic game; bringing us luck, our first victory of the season, and most of all, a swell new partner. Hampton Harlay Looking as dapper on the field as he normally does, Hamp put a snap and vigor into his cheers that made one wonder how the squad ever got along before he joined them in his 4A term, and added greatly to their performance. Charles Earl The '49 season afforded Charlie his second term as a cheerleader. His never-ending smile and pep contributed much to the fun and color of the squad. Santa Bdluso With a snappy strut and nimble fingers, Santa added to the color of our '49 season. Being on the squad for two years, she took active part in all games and parades and was a shining example of why Barringer wanted twirlcrs. CHEERLEADERS Reported by CHARLES EARL After rigid practices the '49 squad evolved with many new faces and an approving sigh from Miss Scalera, its adviser. It proved to be an outstanding term as some new and original cheers were added to its repertoire. The Thanksgiving Day game ended another illustrious cheering season. 78 CENTRAL MUTUAL VINGS LOAN ASS CENTRAL AV . NEWARK MA.iKET 30 30. A. To our class for some of the most pleasant memories we shall ever have of good times together; for their tireless spirit in trying to make this, the Class of January, 1950, the greatest class ever to graduate Barringer. Yes, right here! I've got something to show you graduates. Yes-sir, I've been around a long, long time, even though I don’t show it ... do I ? I’d like to beg your pardon for shouting, but it was the only way to catch your eye. You see. I’m Mr. Barringer. I'm a little old-fashioned perhaps, but I've seen some things you’ve never seen. I thought I’d show you Newark and Barringer as I've seen them, so you young whippersnappers will know that we had a mighty nice town even before you were born. I dug up a few old battered pictures and drawings from my desk, and, by throwing my weight around, managed to get those yearbook people to print them. Most of them arc kind of old 'cause I like to reminisce a little. But remember this, even though I've been around awhile. I'm still in good shape, and I still can do the Charleston and Black Bottom. So you just sit in that chair there and I'll bring out those pictures. HERE r Dedication Now I Icrc In the H-bomb hour, In these troubled days When the dull rumble of drums shakes the air, When hearts heaped high with worldly worries Grope for truth in lies, This cry we raise: That we who lie waiting . . . Waiting in the hurricane's eye May feel again the surge of hope within; That we the crystal-minded, With youth's bright flame to kindle us, May by lucid thought And hope in virgin deed Return again. Return again Home Where our Father’s forgiving hand Which ripped darkness from light, Made the stars to blaze. May soothe us. May mend us His children who arc In His image And bring us To quiet air, Quiet minds, To peace in our time. [4] BARRISGIiR HIGH SCHOOL DR. ROGER B. SAYLOR. Helen Thomai 7. Morton Rich 10. Robert Culver In the fall of 1946 we came Somewhat startled and puzzled By our new-found freedom. We had more thinking to do for ourselves. It was a tough struggle, our first year. Now Occupations and Miss Driscoll's Health class arc all but forgotten. We stayed, most of us, in the same gangs we had been with in grammar school. Some . . . some were making new friends, friends they'll never forget, friends who talked about that cute fellow, and that new gown that Suzy had. We were afraid of some of the teachers. That's all forgotten. It's all a haze now. A bright shining haze. By the second year we knew of Gyp slips, cut slips, gym slips and slips of the tongue. Sametimes the latter hurt. You were sensitive. Ambition took root. Some set their sights on coveted positions, Some on good-looking blondes, Class History Some on a varsity position. Remember the awe we felt for the seniors? The seniors would display their Trig books As if they contained some secret Cabala. Remember your first high school dance. The flutter in your stomach, The hot, burning blushes? Remember when you held that great party That tore the roof down? Remember the eagerness you felt to see the beginning Of the football season? The bitterness of heart when we lost, The surge of pride when we won? And that report card, wow, You never figured a B from McLaughlin. In the Junior year the ambitious ones Found their spot in the sun. I.o Giudice was elected Student Council president. The friendly disputes were soon resolved. Ciccolini launched our class organization. John Ncrrcs, Helen Thomas. A1 Rapuano and many others eagerly pitched in. McCracken, Christman, and Sigler were Acropolis editors. Berman was jack-of-all trades. But the year's most important event was our Disc Social. Remember how hard we had to work to sell tickets? It was fun, though. It was fun hanging decorations. It was fun to see us raking in money for the class. Some of us had tucked in our wallets Pictures we proudly displayed to the accompaniment of Oh, what a doll,” Is he cute, Some dish.” You didn't like those extra-long exam periods. The exam periods were an experiment and you felt like suffering guinea pigs. The long lunch period was a thing of the past. There were protests. But no one suffered. The Junior year ended on the hot sands Of Rye Beach Where we took those awful pictures with our hair all dripping wet Or those pictures that showed you with your chest expanded Tarzan-like. We were tired. We needed that summer vacation. In the Senior year We chose Joe Ciccolini president, Jimmy Furcy vice-president, Helen Thomas secretary and Pat Meola treasurer. We were a long way from our jitterbugging past. We did a sophisticated fox trot and waltz. We learned that tricky rhumba step. We held our Horror-Hop. Remember you got the car that night? That skit advertising the dance! Ncrrcs was a fiend. We still smart from the defeat the Faculty gave us. We still smile at the young cheerleaders. McLaughlin and Foley. Remember you broke off with the fellow you had met during the summer? Remember the strike, the ugly blot which shall forever be a black name on our class? We'd like to forget it. It’s not easy to forget your mistakes. Remember the fight over the rings? We all went to Mr. Rubinfeld to sec it. to touch it. to admire or condemn it. We had to dig into our pockets. Dues to pay. pictures, rings to buy. College was in sight, your job was near. You worried. And pondered. In January, our 4B team defeated the 4A's. We planned the Windy Whirl. Like all our other events, it was a success. Remember the popularity vote? Remember what Suzy told Mary told you? Remember your beating heart when you got your diploma? You'll never forget. These past four years will always remain A happy memory. A mediocrc season was brought to a close with the annual Turkey Day Classic against East Orangfev Entering the game as the decided underdog, the boys played terrific ball before bowing to the Panthers. As a climax to the shuion, Jimmy Eurcy was picked for the first team on the All-City and the All-Essex eleven? at Center. He later was awarded a berth on the third All-State eleven. VIN RUSSOMANO DON SCHROF.DER POKEY WRIGHT [81] BASKETBALL Joe Nerenbcrg Coach Jeff Daniels Captain it Arnie Williams [82] Opening his fifth year at the helm of the Big Blue quintet, Coach Joe Nerenbcrg hoped that he could floor the new League Champs, but things just didn't pan out the right way. With only one member of last year’s first team, Jeflfro Daniels, returning for a full season, Nerenberg had to bring up some of his second stringers and J.V.’s. The latter really did a better job than expected, although, as the record shows, they bogged down just when they should have been on the top. Perhaps the highlight of the entire season came at the Panthers’ home court in E. O. Starting the second half with a deficit of six points, the Blue really poured on the steam to win 48-45 on a last second lay-up by Jeff Daniels. Again inviting Lady Luck, the boys drew an invitation to play Nutley High in the elimination round of the Essex County Tournament. They couldn't get going and lost 55-31 on the neutral Bloomfield High court. In a round-up of the season's play it wouldn’t be fair to forget Ted Kerekes, who came up at mid-season to play center; Howie Beauchamp, Teddy’s insurance man; captain Don Schroeder, ever-jumping guard; Arnie Williams and Jeffro Daniels, both of whom played terrific games both outside and underneath; and last of all, A1 Plaugic with his crazy underhanded head-twisting lay-ups. Don Schroeder Ted Kerekes Bill Berman Howie Beauchamp Al Plaugic Manager BASEBALL Sam $«dicino Codcb Ending their 1949 season by tying South Side for second place in the City League, the Big Blue Bombers, better known as the Barringer Baseball Squad, opened its 1950 season in great style. The boys, under the direction of Sam Scdicino, pulled something that, in the past few years, has been nearly impossible. During their annual visit to Woodman Field the boys managed a neat one-run victory over the Mounties, 4-3. Following the Mounties, the boys opened their City League schedule by again pulling the impossible and defeating Central. Following this, the boys bowed to Kearny as Mr. Scd gave the second team a much needed work-out. The Bombers next met East Side, which, in all probability, is the only obstacle between the team and the championship. Behind the pitching of Don Velardi and the booming bats of Tony Coppola and Dan Boone DeSantis the boys came out on the good side of a 3-1 count. As wc go to press, we can only wish them the best of luck and hope that they can achieve their goals, the City League Championship and the Greater Newark Tournament. Vinnic Ruaaomano Jim Furey Tony Coppola Jfrry Roberta Don Schrocder [83] Frank Hooks Manager Charlie Garland Manager Roger Clapp TRACK AND CROSS COUNTRY Probably least known of all Barringer sports are Track and Cross-Country. It is in these two sports that the Big Blue can really show off. In Cross-Country, the boys, under the able direction of Mr. Allen, were able to take third place in the city and seventh in the state. Among the stars of the team were Jeff Daniels, Charlie Triquct, and Pete Pisauro with Charlie Garland as manager. Turning to the trackmen, wc have the City Champs in our midst. With Mr. Nap” returning for this third year as coach, we have a pair of City titles. Helping Mr. Nap” out arc Pokey” Wright and George Troublcficld at the hurdles, Ron Jones at the high jump, Arnie Williams and Pete Pisauro in the distance events, and Frank Hooks as manager. FENCING TEAM Many years ago men dueled for a lady's smile . . . Twenty-six years ago, Barringer added fencing to its long list of sports, not for a fight to the finish for a lady's smile, but for the spoils that go to the victor in any of our modern athletic encounters. Big Blue fencers have won these spoils more times than there are words on this page since the days of chivalry. The most recent of the great victories came in 1949 when the team of Primamore, Zimmerman and Smith took first, second and seventh places in individual competition in addition to the newly instituted New Jersey State Championship. In the fifty season the team got under way with nine straight wins but the roof fell in, as the team lost two important meets. The entire first team graduated leaving the burden up to the scrubs, led by John Nerres. This group did a fine job considering their limited experience. We can now only hope that they will be able to take the State meet next year. GIRLS' ATHLETICS They made it! 1200 points, you must agree, is a tremendous amount,” is a favorite saying of Miss Scalera. The first question that probably pops into your mind is how do the girls earn their points? There arc several ways of accomplishing this feat. Their rating in gym class, marks of A and B; posture; gym costume preparation; perfect attendance; and participation in extracurricular sports, give credit toward a letter. The graduating B Girls are Muriel Alfonso, Gloria Allocca, Jean Blakely, Wilma Boyer, Dolores Cole, Eleanor Coppola, Josephine Corbo, Ruth Curley, Catherine Dc Stefano, Theresa Guarino, Copcetta Iannaccone, Helen La Morte, Dolores Malanga, Phylis Moronc, Ruth McCracken, Joanne Measures, Mary Ann Mcndicino, Marie Mirti, Viola Mosley, Margaret Restaino, Lilyan Sasso, Freda Schneck, Doris Seltzer, Marie Soriano. Marie Tambascia, Helen Thomas, Rose Torsicllo, Jacqueline Usscry. [86] Lorraine Peccatiello Ruth McCracken, Captain Syvclla Edward lU k Jo Corbo, Co-Captain Eleanor Coppola CHEERLEADERS AND TWIRLERS The fancy stepping and peppy cheering of our graduating cheerleaders and majorettes will be missed next season. These eight cheerleaders spurred the crowds on even when the team was behind. Their motto was, Whether win or lose, no use crying the blues, because we'll do it the Barringer way. These proud majorettes were among the first to don the uniform of Barringer's twirlers. These crowd-pleasing girls with their nimble fingers and high strutting will be a great loss to Barringer. Both squads are about to leave the playing fields as performers, but they will be back as enthusiastic spectators. Bob Sealer , Co-Captain Al Rapuano Conceit a lannaconc B.H.S. I guess you were too busy remembering and reliving your days in Barringer. Well, remembering’s my stock in trade. I had just intended showing you a few old pictures, but somehow I got caught up in your activities. I thought before you closed the book, I'd speak a few words. Maybe I've got preacher blood in me, but I just can't keep from telling you this: If you can keep up your Barringer spirit of eager cooperation and active interest, and carry it into later life, you'll be doing Newark and Barringer a great service. You'll be adding to the Barringer tradition of turning out good citizens and making me real gone proud, as you say, of the Class of June 1950. Now that I've got all that off my chest, I think 1 11 go back among my musty books and chicken inspector badges, and wait till the class of 2000 comes along, and all of you have taken your place in the world. Good-bye, Good luck, God bless you, „ . ' — • - _ s - _ , .. ... . ■
