N J l cwU uj i JUcfli School fiewa ih, Neui jjeAleif CLASS OF June 1942 THG STAR-SPflnGLGD BAfinGR Oh! say. can you see. by the dawn's early light. What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming. Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous night. O'er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming. And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there. Oh! say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave, O'er the land of the free, and the home of the brave? DGDICflTIOn Throughout all the world today, there is a summons going forth—going forth to men of good will in all lands, of all faiths, in every sort of position. Can you hear it? There it sounds, now faint, now a shout. Look around you; others are hearing it, too. That Chinese sniper, watching the Japanese advancing cautiously upon his post, knowing that for him the game is up, is hearing it; that sailor, perhaps British, perhaps American, pacing the mist-drenched bridge of a lonely tramp steamer, watching tor that telltale streak of white upon the sea's placid surface which will spell destruction for himself and his ship—he's hearing it; that Russian soldier lying in the slop of Ukrainian mud is hearing it. Listen again, perhaps you can hear what it says. It speaks of valor, of heroism known and unknown; it speaks of joy, of love and laughter; it speaks of tears, of bitter, heart-rending sorrow. Yet even these are minor notes in the tremendous whole. Above all things, it speaks of the future, of a new world, of a world where universal man can enjoy the basic rights which humankind has learned to cherish down the ages, a world where life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” will truly have a meaning, not only to some men, but to all men, the world over. To the men who have heard and are answering the sum- mons, and to that new world of which they dream, in which they believe, and for which they are living, fighting, and dying— we humbly and gratefully dedicate this book. It all began in September of 1938. Accompanied by a hurricane, we were ushered into the hallowed halls of Barringer, brief cases and all. In those days, we slept all morning, arriving at our posts at ten o'clock, and wending our weary way homeward in the gathering gloom at 4.30. In beginning our Sophomore year in 1939. wo abandoned some of our verdant Freshman fallacies, such as brief cases, and that absurd notion that teachers were human This year we had to get up in the middle of the night in order to get to school before the trumpets of doom at 8.30. We then slaved until one with majors, loafing all afternoon with the minors. It was in this year that Mr. Michael McGreal assumed command of the armed forces of Barringer Due to his efforts, that desert waste referred to as the lawn'' was transformed into a beautiful expanse of greensward. This accomplishment is only one of many improvements to be soen all over our noble edifice. Some from our ranks joined the Acropolis staff to flower into prolific authors Our Sophomore female contingent trampled over one another chasing those big. handsome athletes, who were luniors and Sen- iors During the winter, our chief divertissement was skating on the park lake in those afternoons after getting out of school by subtle and devious means. Something new was added that lune. We were herded into heavily guarded and patrolled rooms, given an ominous-looking little blue booklet, and told to go to ill This weird ritual is commonly referred to as final June exams, final in more ways than one. Much to everyone's surprise, we became luniors next fall. It is believed that the introduction of exams gave rise to the current vitamin capsule craze in Barringer, as all that burned-up energy had to be roplaced somehow, in teacher and pupil alike. Our lunior year, in 1940. found us dumbfounded by a ghastly schedule of seven periods a day. This schedule had obviously been planned for camels or some such animal that could go for hours without food. In this yoar we were oxposod to a diseaso called Second Year Algebra, from which it is hoped we will recover. As soon as we became luniors we were favored with seats in the assembly where wo could actually see the stage. Christmas came with a candlelight procession ond carol singing. By this time we had learned the dire consequences of doing homework during assembly, and the nameless fate which awaited a class-cutter or non-doer of home- work. Through the ages one dreadful sensation lingers and will not pass, that horrible feeling as the omnipotent one (toacher) domanded the non-existent homework. Being steeped by now in the time-honored tradi- tions of our ancient Alma Mater, wo were genuinely stirred as the Seniors relinquished their assembly seats to the hopeful new tenants. Next year it would be our turn to prance bashfully down the aisle to those choice seats. As the days grew longer and brighter we were stricken with a mysterious malady which banished the urge to do any work at all Sirens seemed to beckon to us to quit your books and learn from old Ma Nature. Indeed, quite a few pupils suc- cumbed to temptation, ending up trying to explain to the office that they didn't know that the lunch period was over until—etc.—etc. In the sweltering June of that year we were again driven to those chambers of horror with the little blue booklets. We thought that the utmost had been reached last June, but we soon found that we were grossly mistaken. After this trial by fire, a safari was organized for a picnic at the Sunnyfield pool. Ap- parently such things as suntan lotion had been en- tirely forgotten, because the pilgrims returned on the last day of school resembling well-boiled lobsters. In Soptomber of 1941, we bogan the final year in which we would grace and adorn the corridors of Barrinaer. The first excitement of the year was af- forded in the formal organization of our class. As our advisers and rescuers in times of stress, we had wisely chosen Mrs. Furness and Mr. Lippe. With their assistance, an election was held lor class officers in which our amazing ability to choose sensibly was shown again. The officers elected were: Charles Lorello—President; Irene Crawford—Vice President; Lawrence Zegas—Treasurer, and Claire Kennedy— Secretary. 4B. Virginia Smith—Secretary. 4A. The elections were the opening guns of our highly successful Senior year Next on the agenda, we bought class rings, and became the first class to have them while yet 4B's. Since then many girls have taken to hoarding rings, for some ulterior motive. This was followed by the Hallowe'en Hop. a really gay affair closely resembling an Oriental Bacchanale The football season swirled into full swing in No- vember. culminating in the Barringer-East Orange melee, which we won with a score of 13-13. Thai now-famous team of ours was the pride of Barringer, besides being city champions. December seventh, the first day of war. sobered us quite a bit. with the air raid drills making the war a reality in Barringer At our basketball game in January, our gallant class team was mysteriously beaten by that collection of antiques known as the Alumni. In order to amuse the huge crowds at this game, that faculty team of octogenarians was soundly beaten by a team of rosy-cheeked little Freshmen. At last came the long-anticipated day when we. the class of June. '42. proudly took those coveted seats in assembly In January a brilliant reception was held for the 4A's, with luxuriously engraved invitations. The girls veere as lovely as visions In their long evening gowns. The boys were a vision, too. looking like something Edgar Allan Poe dreamed up in their borrowed tuxedos. Many of the revelers greeted their milkmen as they returned home Soon after that debaucherie, we went down to Hahne's and broke the cameras for our rogues' gal- lery in the yearbook We were requested to choose the least horrible one for that purpose. In the mean- time. our invincible basketball demons scored addi- tional triumphs in the defeat of the 3A and 4B basketball teams To celebrate the advent of Spring, we gave a soiree, very aptly dubbed the Spring Fever Frolic As this dance was informal, everyone let his hair down and had a gay and giddy time. The 4B's gave a splendid reception in our honor, for which the boys again got out their ancestral tuxedos. Senior Day. our last fling before graduation, was quite a success, the only casualties being a few broken fingernails An exuberant holiday spirit was present throughout the day. So. with definite symptoms of nostalgia, we walk down the main steps of the building, turning around for a last look. The old place seems to have taken on an ancient, time-honored air. or perhaps we never noticed it before. Thus ends one phase of our life, with a new. startling and exciting world welcoming us. They'll always rate “Tops on our Hit Parade. TpUlinirV Ili, fl I I fl T H L e T I C S In the last four years, Barringer High's Track Team has built up a really enviable record. The team has established a virtual monopoly on the city crown by a winning streak of sixteen straight, with the end nowhere in sight. But this isn’t all our boys have done, for in 1939. they won the State Cham- pionship as well as the Princeton. Montclair. Board of Education and City Meets. Barringer s relay team is equally distinguished, being known throughout the Metropolitan Area for consistently fine performances The team won the All-American Championship at Penn, also the State Title in 1940. 1941. and 1942 We are justly proud of the laurels our teams have earned, and hope that squads in future years will live up to these lofty standards The baseball teams of the Big Blue have long been a power in the state, but really came into prominence under the leadership of Coach Charlie ' Allen Although hampered by poor playing facilities, the team's record was always eminently respectable. Our first baseball season in Barringer saw our team battling for the city crown The following year, we loomed as one of the powers in the state, with a baseball team comprised of many star athletes. In a thrilling finish, we were nosed out by West Side in a titanic struggle for the crown. In 1941, Coach Allen faced a problem. Graduation had left tremendous gaps in the infield and outfield, but he found many valuable recruits and began building for the 1942 season. Our last year in Barringer saw one of the best teams ever pro- duced in Barringer under Charlie Allen. Many veterans returned and most of these veterans were of All-City caliber. The team finished the year with an exceptional record. NflTionnL FencinG CHflmpions An unbeatable fencing team is an old Barringer tradition. Although each graduation takes many of our star fencers and everyone is pessimistic about the next fencing season, the team always comes through in its accustomed style and creates new fencing stars. During our four years here, the fencing team has won eighty-five consec- utive dual meets without ever being defeated Another tradition which the team has created, is the capturing of State Championships, which it has been doing regularly However, the outstanding victories of the squad have been in the National Meets in New York City. It has won the National Championship twice in the last four years to retire with the Anthony J Drexel-Biddle trophy A great deal of credit and gratitude is due Coach Cetrulo lor his hard work and sound coaching Although four members of the squad are gradu- ating this June, we are confident that he will continue to turn out fencing teams that will be feared by all opponents. JOSEPH BITZ Joseph Buddy Bits won the first of his four letters as a sophomore He showed his ability early by being runner up for the 880 title in both the city and Montclair meets As a junior, his fine work on the re- lay team and in the half mile was cut short, due to a serious injury received during practice. At the start of the '42 season. Buddy was one of the main- stays of the track squad, with his versatile running in indi- vidual events and as anchor man on the State Half-Mile Relay Buddy Bitz was also noted for his fine running on the cross country team and received his letter as a junior. FRED BRUNO Fred received his major letter as the mana- ger of the baseball team. Flayers get the cheers, but the manager is the fellow who arranges the schedule games with other schools, prepares for the trips and the set- up of home games He helps the coach with the problems of the players and is always the man behind the man behind the plate Fred earned his B all right! RICHARD CORDASCO It was during his junior year that Richie first donned a Barringer uniform His first season, he played second team wing back This position, however, was filled and late in the season Corky switched to end In his senior year, he displayed a hard-hitting punch and determination, and was awarded the well-earned varsity letter as a member of the city championship team. ANGELO D ANDREA Lou started running in 1940 by entering the city meet junior hurdles Lady Luck wouldn't grant him his major then, for he tripped over the very last hurdle and was elim- inated He ran cross country in 1940 and just missed making the Block major Because of an injury. Lou- was not able to run the fo) lowing year However, he was elected manager and though unable to run himself, helped pusn Barringer on to the City Championship. earning Ins varsity letter ROY D’ALOIA Buck started playing baseball in 1940 when he earned a position in the junior varsity Buck was our utility inftelder in 1941 and turned in a fine job He was a regu- lar in his senior yoar and his work around sec- ond base was outstand- ing Upon his graduation the baseball team will miss a peppy tnfielder ROCCO DELL PRESTO Dell is well known as an athlete to many. His hard work and natural ability earned him his major fencing letter in his sopho- more year. In his junior year, he went out for baseball, receiving the experience and training which earned him his first team berth in the outheld this year Among his other achievements, is a letter for cheer- leading and sprinting for the Big Blue track team. GEORGE DE MARCO George is another one of those fellows who waited until their junior year to go out for football During this year, he played on the second team When the next season started, with a year's experience under his belt. George's ability as a tackle imme- diately became apparent and at the end of tho season he won his varsity letter A shoulder injury almost kept him out lor the season but De Marco, like all the rest of the team, showed what Barringer fellows are made of. and truly deserves his letter as a member of the city-championship team. WILLIAM DUNNE Bill went out for baseball in 1940 and won his varsity letter playing shortstop. In 1941 and 1942 he received major letters and was chosen lor all-city and all-county teams in 1941 In 1942 he was Barringer's nominee for all-state honors. Because of these achievements. Bill was elected to be co- captain of the 1942 squad He was also a star sprinter (or the track team, placing third in the city 100-yard dash in 1941. He captained the basketball team in 4B and 4A and will be sorely missed by coaches and students alike. IERRY FALCONE Jerry is known to his competitors as The Falcon. He has been appropriately named, lor he is fast and sharp-eyed. He was elected captain of the team in 1941 and led his fencers to the national champion- ship. He was the main factor in keeping the undefeated streak of our fencing team going The Falcon is considered one of the tines! scholastic fencers in the country. He is king of all the scholastic fencers in the state and his name will never be forgotten in Barringer's hall of fame. WILLIAM FAZIOLI Bill first served Barringer's football teams by playing fullback on the freshman team When Fizzy moved up to try out for his Varsity letter he was moved to pull-out guard because of his blocking ability. Ihrough hard work and untiring effort he gained his first major B as a junior. Fizzy came out lor the team again in his senior year and received another var- sity letter He was known for his ability to play various positions and because of this fact he was a very valuable member of the team A gold football was awarded to him for being on the city-championship team WILLIAM FOLTZER William Big Bill Foltzer it tho famous first baseman on our baseball team Bill s su- perior work on the held can only be judged by seeing him play. At first base there is none better in Now Jersey His games are errorless, and he is one of the leading hit- ters on the team as well Big Bill is our candidate for all-state first baseman. FRED FOSTER Fred earned his varsity letter as a junior in 1941 During his varsity track career, ho was a member of tho shuttle hurdle relay which set a now record at Ridgewood. In the City Championships. Fred came through for third and second places in the 110 high hurdles in his first two years. He is now looking forward to winning this title in 1942. HUBERT GATES During his stay at Barringer. Flash earned five major letters by participating in both track and cross-country In 1942 he was elected co-captain of the track team which in 1941 had won the city championship. Gates won the 100-yard dash in the city meet and was to run in the state 440 Because of his fine running in 440. he was made captain of tho cross-country team He went through the season undefeated and was city champ, ending a perfect soa- son Gates is one of tho finest runners to leave Barringer and will live forever in our Hall of Fame COLUMBUS KINSEY Kinsey started running in his sophomore year but due to somo bad breaks he did not quite make his major. Columbus was a mainstay on most of the relay teams and was exceedingly fast in the 220. In 1940. he ran cross country and just missed his letter again In 1941, Colum- bus was out for the begin- ning of the season but later went to town and earned enough points to earn his letter. DAN LATORRACA In 2940 Dan first came out for baseball. His fielding ability enabled him to earn a spot on the Junior Varsity team. Because of the many veterans who were returning the following season, he was forced to play alternate to the first team. In 1942. with added experience and a decided improve- men in batting. Dan took over the second base spot in fine fashion His timely hits won many ball games and his all around good playing has always brought forth cheers for Danny Latorraca. o e JULES MUSYL Big Jule came out for football in hi junior year. Hi size immediately won him a position on the squad. Because of lack of experience Musyl didn't receive his varsity letter. In his second year Jules was first team al- ternate and was of great value in pushing back the opposition. Playing well in every game. Musyl received his varsity letter and gold football as a member of the city championship team. ALFONSE PARELLI Alfonse Slats Parelii is one of Bar- ringer's most versatile athletes. He won his major B in both baseball and football. Slats was catcher and outfielder on the Barringer nine and also one of the reasons we won the city football title. He was our tackle, and at this position made the all-city and all-state teams, getting honorable mention for all-state. He received a gold football for be- ing a member of the city football team. Slats' absence will be missed on the diamond and on the gridiron. ROBERT POET Bob earned his numerals on the ‘frosh football squad, but really came into prominence in his junior year when he won a place as var- sity end. In his senior year. Bob re- ceived All-City, All-County and All- State berths in recognition of his ability as a pass receiver and his fine defensive work. He holds the gold football for membership on the city championship football team This ver- satile athlete earned two of his four letters for track. GENE RACIOPPI Geno started his career at B H S in 1940 when he first donned a Big Blue uniform. That year Gene showed great promise of moving into varsity competition in 1941. In his junior year, he did not quite make the first team but was alternate at shortstop and third base. As a senior, however, he determined to make the first team and did Because of his exceptional fielding ability. Racioppi was chosen by Coach Allen as first string third baseman and received his Major B ORLANDO SALVATO Orlando ''Sal Salvato is our proud member of the famous fencers of Barringer Working hard and faith- fully for two years, he was justly rewarded for his eliorts by being one of the mainstays of the fencing team. Seize what is highest ' he reasoned, and you will pos- sess what is in between. True now, as it was then. Those individuals who deter- mine to fully meet their re- sponsibilities succeed better than those who stop at lesser goals. It seldom is difficult to con- vince such leaders that life in- surance is one of the great necessities. 4l'r|)rudtulial JrtBimmr? (Sotnpany of Amrrtra HomcOfa. NEWARK, N.
