One wintry day four years ago great winds swept across the threshold of Barringer a new crop of children, shivering and awed. We were divided and placed in the hands of several gra- cious teachers, to grow and increase in stature and in wisdom. You were among those teachers. During three years you watched as we developed from children to more mature young people. With a kindly smile or an occasional frown you patiently guided and corrected us. We were glad that you, who have been our friends from the beginning, were chosen to guide us in our last and most im- portant year. Now you watch us, seniors, leave, and a new crop of children enter. You watch another grown family set out into the world and a new one come to be fostered and reared. But to us there is only the one family, and the impressions made here will ever be with us. Our feeling of gratitude cannot be ex- pressed by mere words of thanks. We can only say.................. we will never forget. THE CLASS OF JANUARY 1941 Jla ne (loam 'leaclteM. CLASS SONG By MABEL FAUX Through clouds of triumph rising Her lofty tower we see Undaunted through the ages. Courageous, proud and free. There floats the guardian banner Of white and royal blue. The symbol of her loyalty To all that's fine and true. And now the future calls us, Her sons and daughters, forth, To meet the great world's challenge To lives and deeds of worth. In song and sorrow parting A grander day we see While Barringer forever Lives in our memory. 39 AtL MG USn StcujJj 42 FEATURES BOARD Michael Cleffi, Gloria Hagopian, Co- Chairmen; Carmella Biondo. ( itosiial a+uH edUcatca+i E'RE here—at the highest point in our high school career, that of graduation. During the four years of high school we have gone through one of the hardest stages of life—that of growing from childhood into young men and women of tomorrow. Whatever success we have had is to be attributed, not to ourselves, but to the guidance and willing sacrifices of our parents. We have progressed a long way since that cold day back in February when, bewildered, we first entered the well-worn halls of Barringer. We came here unaware of the world constantly re- volving about us, for the majority were still living within the se- cluded wall our parents had created around us. Today, with more faith in ourselves, we are for the first time to go into the real world. It may be by fate that we are more vitally aware of the1 benefits our parents have given us because we are not, as many of our predecessors, entering into a world of peace but one of war. It is into this state of confusion we are about to step. It is needless to say then that we feel sad as we think of leaving Barringer, the place where we were carefree and unassuming of grave responsibili- ties. However, our parents, our teachers, and our school have given us confidence to face that which is in store for us. It is with these thoughts in mind that we fondly dedicate our yearbook, the summary of four well spent years, to our parents, hoping that in the future they will have opportunity to be as proud of us, their sons and daughters, as we, now, are proud and thankful that we have had those who have guided and cared for us to the best of their ability. 48 DRUSILLA G. Adviser THOMAS RYAN, President I I rTTVTi 59 Men l Action CLEM CONERS lr his freshman year, “Bucky inaugurated the long string of successes which make up his enviable record. In '38 he won the starting position at guard, and in the same year he was awarded a gold football. He played var- sity ball m '38, '39, and '40 and won three major B's for his excellent playing during those seasons. Clem also earned a major B for his service on the baseball team in '39, and by his capable work proved himself to be of great value as an all-around athlete. Always a great fa- vorite with everyone, he leaves a void in the hearts of Barnngerites. ERNEST FIRAVANTE “Ernie is one of our unproclaimed stars of the base- ball diamond. Although he played only one year of base- ball, he proved to be good enough to warrant a major letter. He weighs only one hundred and thirty pounds and is five feet, five inches tall, but in spite of his lack of brawn he played a bang up game all season, alternating at the positions of shortstop and second base. ARTHUR JONES Jock is the only member of the class who has played on the tennis team and earned a letter in that sport. His height of five feet, eleven inches, gave him a distinct advantage on the courts, and the power of his one hundred and sixty-five pound frame greatly added to the effectiveness of his game. He played in '39 and '40, earning a letter each year. In '40 he was a member of the city championship tennis team. His favorite sport besides tennis is baseball, although he frequently enjoys watching a basketball or football game. VIRGINIUS MATTIA In addition to his activities in the affairs of the school, Barney has distinguished himself as a foilsman. He |Oined the fencing squad in '38 and received a minor letter in recognition of his ability. The following years, '39 and '40, he was a member of the varsity team and was awarded a major B for each year. He participated in the state meet in '39. Virginius is the only letterman to represent the exacting sport of fencing in this graduating class. JERRY MERCOGLIANO Merk has been one of our most valued athletes since his entrance into the sports as captain of the '37 freshmen football team. He received minor letters in baseball, '39, and track, '38 and '39, and he earned three major B's for his splendid work on the football team in '38, '39, and '40. As a result of his excellent backfield playing he was placed on the all-city team and was given honorable mention for the all-state eleven. He was awarded a gold football m '38 and was elected co-captain of the '40 squad; also during his scholastic career he was a member of the 4B basketball team. This conquering hero leaves a gap in Barringer sports that will be difficult to fill. ROBERT TANKOOS Another departing member of our gridiron aggrega- tion, Bob has treasured since childhood the ambition to play football for Barringer High. In '38 he accomplished this feat and received a minor letter for his efforts on the field. In '39, by courage and hard work, he succeeded in earning a major B, but the year 1940 brought him even more satisfaction—and another major letter. He is five feet, eight inches tall and weighs but one hundred and fifty pounds, which placed him at a disadvantage, but he overcame this obstacle of his lack of weight by skillful and arduous playing. Bob's position on the team might be filled by someone else, but his personality will never be duplicated. FRED WESTPHAL The versatile Freddie leaves Barringer with an il- lustrious athletic career in his wake'. Fred used his perfect physique to good advantage in five years of football, one of which was on the freshman team. While on the varsity eleven, he earned three major B s, a berth on the all-city team in '39, and honorable mention for the all-state squad. He co-capfamed the boys in blue in '40, and won honors on the track team in '38 and '40, besides these activities he played three years of baseball and was the captam of the 4B basketball team. His awards include five major B's and a gold football, in recognition of a truly great athlete. CHARLES ALLEN Coach fencing 1 1 1 1 i 1 dr GERALD I. He was represented as having two faces, one looking to the past, the other to the future. He was also regarded as god of be- ginnings, and sacrifices were made to him when any new under- takings were planned. The temple of Janus had two doors, one facing east and the other west, but these doors were open only in times of war. Then the Romans marched their armies through the temple from east to west, hoping in this way to win success in their new campaign. With these thoughts in mind, we have chosen GATEWAYS as the theme of our yearbook. We look back happily upon our days in Barringer, but with regret also, as its doors close upon us. Other doors now open before us toward the pathways of the future. As we engage in new enterprises, we realize that we must meet the challenge of a changing world, no matter who among the warring nations is victorious in the present struggle for supremacy. To those who have made possible these four happy years and who have helped prepare us for our contributions to the world of the future—to our parents and our school—we gratefully dedicate this book. CLASS SONG The joy of life and youth we found Within these halls. The echo of our laughter and our song Still softly falls. This is our home, this place we love And hold in revery; Through years to come it will be ours To keep in memory. Beyond these portals we can see New, deeper ways. But in our every thought will be These golden days. To you we raise triumphant song Deep from the heart. As now the gates of years to come Swing slow apart. —ELIZABETH TEWALT 49 HARRIET DRESONER 1 Second) BARRINGER HIGH S' Newark, N. J. As the mist begins to rise, Birds awake to sing and play. The dawn is beginning to break. Slowly, so slowly, the sunbeams brighten The sleepy world. The sun has come to wake the drowsy, Wake them from a peaceful sleep. For it is morning. And another day has begun. ▼ Night The moon is dripping light Shedding a soft glow on silvery stairs Connecting sky and earth; It moves silently across the heaven A faint whisper floats on the scented night breeze Angles glide gently Up the musical stairway. To the star laden sky Will They Forget? Today I roam upon the wind-tossed hills, And listen to the whisperings of the grass. Tomorrow must I lie beneath the ground. Unmindful of the fleeting joys that pass? Today I walk with springing step and free; I wander with the wandering leaves. Tomorrow shall I be as cold as they, And lie forgotten 'ncath the barren trees? No—forever will I live, while on and on My heart will roam upon this hill; The world may never think of me again, But all the whispering trees and grasses will. ▼ Black and White A faint gleam of light through the whispering trees. The soft scent of flowers and the sun's golden glow. It fell from the sky on the oft, singing breeze, And someone was happy on earth far below. A black shadow crept from the shades of the night. Into the cold hard light of the moon; It took laughter, joy and delight. As it crept from the earth with the wind's sobbing tune. ▼ City The rain drips softly from the trees. The leaves are wet beneath my feet, The air is damp with the soft night breeze— Which wanders down the lonely street. No stars come out to herald the moon. Only the lights of the City glow; A distant plane hums a lonely tune. Leaving an empty silence below. The cold has frozen the cricket's voice. The birds have drifted off to sleep; Only the wind moans restlessly. In the solitude of the dark, wet street 62 RHEVA HOLZMAN ELIZABETH TERVALT CELEBRITIES As we leave these hallowed rooms. Our haggard faces wrapt in glooms. Let's pause before the final hour And with this poetry plenty sour Devote our minds to looking back Along that well-beaten track Of memories. Let us take the officers first. We can really rib them worst. Things that they have done these years Have filled poor Sidney's eyes with tears. His temples are gray, his back is bent. The flower of his youth he's spent— Upon them. Pres Marzulli, sword in hand, Like Horatio has made his stand; Defying all our maidens fair To pluck one lock of his curly hair; Carrying on in his bashful way With hardly ever a word to say— To anyone. Li'l Mildred, diminutive lass. Makes up for her size with plenty of class; And Sugar Parsons has filled many a room With the sickening scent of her odorous perfume. We'll have to say these femmes have worked And never have they their duties shirked— At all. But Treasurer Windle's another story; We certainly can't give him much glory. We're afraid that as a mathematician He's really quite a good musician; As an actor he thinks he's just a grand slam, But personally we think he's only a ham— At heart. Editor Jones, the Barringer sharp, Upon him now we'd like to harp. He rushes around from place to place With a look of importance all over his face; He gives all the girls a wink and a smile, And thinks they're looking at him all the while. We don't. And then there's Allaire, the gal with the brains; In writing about her we take plenty of pains. We couldn't bear it if she should find A mistake, and give us a piece of her mind; 'Cause really wouldn't it be awful sad If we took the last piece she had— To spare. And now before we rouse his ire Let's not forget our little Meier, Who is usually found doing nothing less Than battling with Garvin over a game of chess. Or possibly playing upon his flute. He thinks we like to hear him toot— That thing. Do we feel the wind give an awful blow? Oh that's no wind! That's Errico, Dodging the clutches of 'Slim Shustak With that horrible camera slung over his back. And by the way, where in tarnation Does Epstien get that awful creation He wears? Then there's the Mickey Mouse of Barringer's Halls Who comes a-runnin' whenever she calls. Hen-pecked Pinkman is his name; We say to him, For shame, for shame, For a guy to be so meek and mild. It really gets our tempers riled— At him. Wherever things have started to pop You'll find Giggling Gertie and Happy Hopp. The things that they do are certainly drippy And oh, how they worry poor Mr. Lippe! Like a couple of magpies they shout and they chatter But the things that they say really don't matter— At all. Ryan and Dicck, those happy boys. About them now, we'll make some noise. In solid or trig, Dieck's out on his own, But keep him away from that awful trombone. And Orator Ryan, that hairless wonder. His voice reverbrates like thunder— It cracks. Crooner Quigley, the Barrington Bing Where did he get the idea he could sing? Be careful and don't let him get you alone Or into your ear, he'll sigh and he'll groan, Like classy Cadmus, the sheik of our school. Who with padded shoulders no one does fool— But himself. Now our review has come to the end And out into the world we send This little group, to make their way. Oh, let no trials their hearts dismay. If their past is a testament of things to come. We're sure they'll make this old world hum. So long 63 OLIVER WENDELL WINDLE JAMES WHITCOMB QUIGLEY C dU ( Janujcv MI to ' [eCl Oprc _ Sj r fiftyL- • JiW hi lt'l . Being a mem- ber of the state championship team in 1939, he received a wreath B and a silver pin. Also a member of the team which won the state and national title, John has a right to be proud of his fencing ability. Climaxing his fencing career in the I940-'41 season, he was elected co-captain of the squad. ROCCO FERAVOLA Making his debut as a fencer in 1938, Rocky earned a B-2 and a first team birth for 1939. Receiv- ing a wreath B and a silver pin for his fencing feats in '39, he captured many bouts for the Big Blue. 1940 was the big year for Rocco. In that year he won the national and state championships and was made co-cap- tain of the team. JOHN HADAM Johnny came out for the baseball team as a sopho- more in '39. He had a very successful year on the junior varsity, batting .383 and winning three while dropping none as a pitcher. When the next season rolled around, John, with a little more experience, made the varsity quite easily, alternating between right field and the pitcher's box. For his services on the diamond John leaves Barringer with one ''B-2'' and two major letters. CHARLES TURNER Charlie's baseball career started in 1939, when he played on the second team. In that year, Mr. Commisa, then coach of baseball, took quite an interest in Charlie as the future second baseman of Barringer. In 1940, because of an accident, he was out of action for several games, but in the latter part of the season, Charles came through in fine style. This year he has turned in many good games at the keystone sack. HARRY SMITH Harry is one of our most versatile athletes! Playing football, baseball, and participating in track, Harry has won renown in Barringer. In baseball, Harry has shown much finesse on the pitcher's mound and this year he was captain of the varsity squad. Football is another sport in which Harry has shown much skill! In '38 he had his first taste of varsity competition. While in track, Harry was on the half-mile relay team, which won the city championship in '37. JOSEPH GUARINO In '38 and '39, Joe went out for baseball and in both years, Joe had a bit of hard luck. A bad appendix was the cause of his misfortune in 1939. ‘ 1940 rolled around, and Joe was given an alternating position in the outfield on the varsity. This season Joe finally made the grade, thus earning his major B . ALLAN WARDEN After three years of playing tennis, Allan graduates from Barringer with two minor B s and a major one. Playing in earnest since 1939, he ended his tennis career this season by earning his major B . ERNEST INGRAM Ernie's graduation leaves a tremendous gap in the track and cross-country teams. Coming out for track in '39 he started his career with a bang, breaking the 440- yard record in the Board of Education meet at 51:7. Victories at Philadelphia, Princeton, Montclair, and Long Branch, all added to his ever growing string of triumphs. Being elected captain in '41, Ernest still continued his sizzling pace on the track, as well as in the record books. WILLIAM PHILLIPS With Bill's graduation, another star is leaving the halls of Barringer. Bill was a member of the track and cross-country teams. In track he runs anything from a 440 to the mile run. As for his standing on the cross- country squad. Bill is tops. He has led the pack over the line in every race except two this last season, and even then he reached second place. WILLIAM D'AMICO William started cross-country in 1938. Running in all the dual meets, he was selected to run in the city, state, and national meets. During that year, Barringer won the city championship and also a cup for being vic- torious in the national meet. During his cross-country career, William received two gold track shoes and two major B's. ROLAND MIGNONE At the start of his track life in his sophomore year, Roland placed first in the junior broad jump and captured third place in the junior half mile run, in the city meet, thus earning his major B in his second year at Bar- ringer. JACK DAWKINS Smashing the ball over the net for Barringer since 1937, Jack worked his way up to the top, to be top man on the varsity team in 1938. During '39 and '40, Jack kept his position, and for his excellent playing he leaves Barringer with four major B's . GENE CADMUS Wielding a tennis racket for Barringer team since 1938, Gene has played varsity tennis for three years. During his life on the tennis court. Gene has gathered for himself four maior letters. Bringing his sport life to a close. Gene was made captain of the 1941 tennis squad. HARRY WHEELER Starting to play football in '38, Harry played two years of varsity and one year of freshman ball. Harry, while on the varsity team, played a consistent game as quarterback 1938 was also the start of Harry's track career. During his stay at Barringer, Harry has earned two major Bs and two minor ones. 75 BASEBALL TEAM CHARLES A ALLEN. Coach HARRY SMITH. Captain EDWARD WINDLE, Manager TRACK team WILLIAM F. His future is an unexplored era of possibilities. And what a youth accomplishes depends largely on himself . . . that is what makes the right sort of preparation most important.
