In order to have a permanent record of something of the scope of the cele- bration, the Athenaeum of the January class of 1939 presents with warmest congrat- ulations some Fragments of History chosen from the play: also, the names of the leaders and other faithful workers who assisted in making the year a memorable one both to the alumni as well as the present faculty and student body. J'Ajajqmsinidu ojL dildJDkj ftwsrL JhsL ( onbinniaL QcwakajdsL The Beginning 1838 The people who settled New England and New Jersey had a different vision of the future. They were merchants and shop keepers and tillers of the soil, and they saw. in their dreams, a new country—a country where no class rules another, but where all men are equal. School is the place where poor fo k may learn better ways of living—not PAUPER schools, but FREE schools, where rich and poor learn together the lessons of good citizenship. 1838 Sc utSL - 58 ► Ruth Stearns, Doris Gee, Thomas Ryan, Marie Bel verge CwiL (i)ax. SaaisL Andrew Price, Irwin Mason, Janies Serritella, Eduard Windell, John Tunis, Jerry Markowitz If the cultured class is to be crowded out by the rabble, it will mean riot and disaster, and perhaps war. The southern states will never stand by and see this happen. There may well be trouble in plenty. But in this new land of all the people, some great leader will arise and show us the way to peace. And mayhap that leader will come to us from the humble and the lowly. The Civil War 1861 1865 Do you remember that day in March, 1861, when a certain man came to New- ark on his way to Washington? He was tall and gaunt and he looked as if he were already carrying on his shoulders the burden of the world. Lincoln! Do you remember that our fathers and mothers stood near the Old First Church and watched him as he spoke to the people of Newark? They came away saying that they had seen a man who could lead us, even through war. to peace. He was on his way to Washington then for his inauguration as president! A while ago I met a man from Lincoln's home town. I asked what kind of war president the people out there think Lincoln'II make. He said that if you can judge him by the kind of prairie lawyer he used to be, he'll bear malice toward none, but he'll never quit till he's finished his fight and won it. Remember how our people used to come and watch us drill over at the end of Branch Brook swamp? They were mighty proud to have their boys join the Jersey Blues. Remember the day we marched down Broad Street and the whole town was there to see us off for the South? Then we swung into Washington Street and halted. The boys and girls were all out in front of the school. And the girls gave us that flag to carry on to Richmond ! Stars in the flag look pretty good together, all 34 of ’em. Look kinda lonesome to take half of 'em out. iS9 That's so. And if any of us live to take this flag back to Newark and maybe give it to the old school to hang up somewhere and keep. I'd hate to tell 'em they'd have to make it over first. There's a flag in a glass case in the front hall at school. Is that the one the girls gave to the soldiers in 1861? Yes. Our boys carried it down into Virginia. It was the first flag to pass President Lincoln in his review of the troops in Washington. Nearly forty years later, the veterans of the Old First Regiment of Jersey Blues gave back the flag to the school that had given it to them. One of the old men who presented the flag to the school had been the drummer boy when the regiment marched away to the the Civil War. I suppose the city gave the soldiers a great welcome when they came back from the Civil War. Yes: but the city soon forgot.—except on Decoration Day. Cities are too busy about their own affairs to remember for long. ♦ The Gay Nineties Of course I was forced to take that devastating ride down Broadway in the cable car. My dear! Why didn't you take the Elevated Railroad? That horrible Elevated, with its disgusting little engines belching smoke! The last time I risked my life on an Elevated train, sparks from the engine blew in at the window and burned great holes in my very best pale blue brocade. Beverly hasn't had ALL the adventures. There are plenty for anyone who tries to make his way about the streets of Newark. As we were riding through Clinton 'tjaif. yilnsdifidu 460 June Beck. Lucille Russomanno, Jennie Ceresier, Anne Afhley, Joan Stearns Street, past that vulgar oyster tavern, our carriage was very nearly upset when one of the wheels ran over that great heap of oyster shells In the street in front of It. I think that the city council might better use its money to clean the streets than to spend it on this crazy new scheme for building a new high school when we HAVE one only forty years old! And the location they are considering for the new school! Where is it to be? Away out on the hill at the edge of Branch Brook swamp! Near the stone quarry! Not on Goat Hill? ON GOAT HILL. What a shocking name! And how would the dear children EVER find their way from the city out into that wilderness? And as if that were not enough. I have heard a rumor—just a rumor, mind you. but on very good authority—that some of the more radical people are suggesting, not only that boys and girls shall be in the same building, but that they shall mingle shamelessly in the same classes! WHAT is the world coming to! But to build a school on a place called Goat Hill! Above a swamp! Swamps can be drained and names can be changed. With a great cathedral and a school worthy of a growing city. Goat Hill may well become, with the passing of the years, the Acropolis of Newark. The World War 1914-1918 The school didn't realize very much about the War in the first years. It seemed very far away. Most of it seemed like some impossible tale that an insane story- teller was making up as he went along. When America entered the war. some of our teachers enlisted and went away to training camps, and afterwards to France. And then our boys began to go.— the graduates first that I knew so well, and even some of the older boys who were still in school. Twenty Years After You’ll do. Nurse. But you're pretty young for this job. I'm twenty. Twenty! This is 1938. In 1918. when you were born. I was busy getting myself blown up at St. Mihiel. That was about the time a machine gun in the Argonne sprinkled me with steel confetti. Is he asleep? He's been like that ever since a heavy bomb landed in his trench and buried him. When we dug him out. we thought at first he was dead. Seems the explosion killed something inside him. We musn't talk about him. He wouldn't like it. He couldn't hear us. Ear drums burst. He never notices anything. Hasn't he any folks? No. He was in my outfit in France. We went over together. He and I used to go to the same school. We come from Newark. He was going to marry my sister when the war was over. It'll never be over for him. and my sister's dead. Went as a nurse and was killed on duty by a bomb that blew up her hospital. Well: we did what the world asked us to do. and we're not sorry, and we're not ashamed. If things didn't work out so well after the war. they can’t blame us for that. So we fought a war to end war. 61 ► Well, maybe we did at that. When we were told that we were fighting a war to end war, we thought that meant we were to lick the warlike nations so thoroughly that they'd never start another war. Most people realize now what a crazy notion that is. But maybe in another way we WERE fighting a war to end war. Maybe the world sees now that war never settles anything and never ends anything. Maybe people see that even such a war as the World War is foolish and useless. And may- be if the world is not COMPLETELY crazy, we've shown it a war that has proved so useless that it will, after all, be a war to end war. If it does that, it will be easier for us, who did what we were asked to do and now have to sit on the sidelines and just watch other people play the rest of the game. If it does that, maybe it will make those thousands of white crosses with Amer- ican names on them MEAN something. An End and a Beginning 1938 And now the old school is facing a new century—a century with problems thax are maybe harder than those of OUR days. There are problems aplenty. The teachers in the old school tell me how the school has changed. The parents of chil- dren in their classes come from all over the world. The story of the early days of America that WE have heard since childhood, is unknown in many of those homes. Our old American traditions are often strange to them. Many are true Americans in spirit, but they know so little of our past— Yes: and all children, of all classes, need a training to help them meet the prob- lems of a new world, utterly different from the world that we have known,—a world that nobody can foretell. I believe that most of the criticism of the schools today comes from people who don't at all understand what is going on in our American schools. It's always so easy to criticize. But our American schools are still American, and just as they faced the problems of long ago. and aqainst opposition and criticism won their way and solved their problems, so they will again. America will win through in this new world, and her schools will help her to that victory. It's like a long procession, beginning away back in 1838 and coming on down through a hundred years. It's the Cavalcade of Newark High! So pause we here to mark a hundred years.— To mark them and remember them with pride. Then on to face tomorrow—ever young And swift and strong to welcome a new dawn Across a new horizon. THE CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION OF BARRINGER 1838-1938 Executive Director— Mr. Raymond B. ATHEflAEU fll jfinuflRv Li y 9=, JhjL JjlVxtl oft, ihsL Qmiwu Barringer is standing on the threshold of a new century. She locks back over her past with pride and forward to her future with hope. One hundred years the school has seen pass by—years holding their share of joy and pain; years enriched by the very trials that accompanied ihem. As a kindly mother she has seen hopeful young men and women leave her protection, eager to prove their mettle. She has watched with interest the unceasing changes wrought outside of her own little sphere because they affected so mightily her boys and girls to whom she has ever been a source of inspiration. Barringer herself has kept apace of the times. From the small acadamic high school of early days she has developed into a school offering a broad field of educa- tion to her students. She has become an increasingly democratic institution, s'riv'ng to educate her pupils to be worthwhile citizens as well as cultured men and women. With such a record behind her, Barringer may now look ahead optimistically, for what different conditions surround her as she begins her second century. What a wealth of opportunity, never visualized in the nineteenth century, exists for her high school graduates! How every field has widened, new doors opened, and prejudices broken down! Science alone has uncovered vast unmapped realms to be explored. Although women already have many of the same chances as men, the oncoming years will undoubtedly lower the barriers further still. Even the unsetiled state of world affairs is a challenge to youth. And the youth of today, forced into independent thought and action, will accept that challenge. We. the members of the class of January 1939, who are privileged to live in this twentieth century and who have enjoyed the advantages of an organization like Barringer, dedicate this, our year-book, to the future of Barringer as she passes the turn of the century . R. M. C. BTHEnflEUm JflnURRV 1339 Haiilmtii t. Grants memorial Cash Autarb The Cavalcade of Newark High celebrating the Centennial Anniversary of the founding of Secondary Education in Newark is being celebrated this year. For nearly one third of this one hundred year period, from 1838-1938, the late beloved Wayland E. Stearns, affectionately known as Pop Stearns, was principal of Barringer. For more than thirty years he guided the growth and progress of this school, and from his wealth of experience and excellent judgment shaped its destiny. The imprint of his broad human understanding and his kindly sense of humor and fair play is indelibly stamped on the characters of his students and the school to which he gave unfailing devotion. He was without question Barringer's First Citizen. To memorialize suitably the contribution which Mr. Stearns made to education and to this school, a plan has been conceived by members of the Barringer Club to establish a fund, to be known as the Wayland E. Stearns Memorial Fund. The income from this memorial fund is to be awarded to the student in each graduating class of this school who. in the Stearns tradition, best typifies the Outstanding School Citizen. Through the efforts and cooperation of many of the alumni and former and present members of the school faculty, a sum of money has been raised which, al though not complete, is enough, at present, to enable the committee to announce the first award. The Wayland E. Stearns Memorial Cash Award for outstanding school citizenship will be made to some member of the graduating class of Jan- uary 1939 and thereafter to one member of each succeeding graduating class. It is fitting and proper that notice of this award be made part of this Centen- nial Celebration. May it serve as a living symbol and reminder of that rich and enduring heritage he left us. It is dedicated to one of Newark’s outstanding edu- cators, our friend—Wayland E. Stearns. May it be noted again that the fund at present is not complete. Provision has been made for increasing the principal of the fund and further participation in it is possible and requested from anyone who so desires. There are more pledge cards, and contributions are welcomed ... By enlarging the size of the fund the amount of the cash award will be increased. It is a worth-while cause and merits your support. WON'T YOU HELP? 69 (phsiAsmtim ATHEIIAEUm JRnuflRV 1939 The Kick-Off— The athletic teams of Barringer High School have done their share in celebrat- ing the Centennial year. They have won every possible City Championship. The baseball and football titles are held jointly with West Side, while the tennis, track and cross-country squads won their titles outright. The fencing team continued its winning ways by capturing the State Championship. Barringer is proud of the boys and coaches who have made this remarkable record possible. Football Season The Barringer High School football team, led by Captain Calcagno. opened its season on the third Saturday of September at Clearman Field by upsetting the Belle- ville Bellboys. 14—0. mainly through the efforts of John Robinson, who scored both touchdowns on brilliant runs. The following week Our Heroes traveled to west Jersey, where they played a 6—6 tie with a highly touted Phillipsburg eleven. Bar- ringer tallied in the first quarter on a forty-five yard sustained drive, while a strong aerial attack precipitated the Pnillipsburg touchdown. Our first City League oppon- ent was the powerful West Side squad. With a large attendance on hand to watch the activities, the game ended in a scoreless deadlock, although both teams threat- ened numerous times. Vincent Commisa. All-Metropolitan tackle, was the mos. outstanding player on the field. Determined to break into the win column, the Boys in Blue trounced the Weequahic Indians, 26—0, with speedy Edward Ryan scoring thirteen points. South Side High School was our next obstacle, and the players, anxious to avenge last year's 19—0 defeat, won with comparative ease. 14—0. Captain Calcagno scored the first touchdown when he recovered a blocked kick in the end zone. Both Kee and Mercogliano showed marvelous line-plunging ability. The former, a three year varsity man, scored the other touchdown and place-kicked tne two extra points. The alumni and student body were looking for- ward to the first night game in the school's history. Therefore, a large crowd turned out to see a slightly over-confident Blue team barely defeat a weak, but fighting Central eleven. Kee's defensive and offensive work and Calcagno's aggressiveness were features of the game. However, the following Saturday the Blue again hit its peak, defeating the Iron Dukes of East Side by the count of 19—0. This victory in- sured us of at least a tie for the City League Championship. Barringer again took to the road and met a stubborn and tricky Orange High Squad. But the blue-clad gridders managed to triumph I 3—6 on a reverse pass from Belmonte to Naue. Then came the forty-second Thanksgiving Day battle between Barringer and its friendly rival, East Orange. Twelve thousand people jammed Ashland Stadium to witness a thrilling game. The first half was scoreless although Mercogliano, sophomore sen- sation, did break away once for a fifty-yard gain. Barringer scored in the third period through the means of a blocked punt. Bur the infuriated Red and Blue came back to tally twice on sustained drives, thereby winning 13—6. ◄ 72 ► £- -2 -J—'sj ATHEnflEUm jnnuflRV 1939 Although the boys lost the traditional game with East Orange, they, together with Coaches Salerno and Commisa and Manager Porrazzo. deserve much credit for their otherwise splendid season. Members of this graduating class who will be sorely missed next fall are Captain Calcagno, Commisa. Kee and Ryan. Cross-Country— The Barringer Cross-Country Squad, ably coached by Mr. Payton, added another City Title to its record this fall. This was accomplished, not by one or two star run- ners. but by the combined efforts of the whole team. It was by the same style of running—that is. keeping well bunched together—that made the Hill-and-Dalers able to defeat such teams as West Side. Central Rutherford. Peddie, East Orange. Dover, and Arts, bowing only to a strong Thomas Jefferson outfit. The boys who are responsible for this fine showing are Captain Jack Myers. Rudy Wunsch. Albert Mangin, John Coppock, Stan Hardy. Joe Scanlon. Bill D’Amico, and Lou D'Andrea. Of these boys Mangin and Coppock will be lost through grad- uation. Both have been awarded their B s and a gold track shoe. Coppock made the varsity by consistent plugging for three years, while Mangin caused a sensation by winning his position in his senior term, the first season he tried out for the sport. Barringer is proud of its Cross-Country Team and hopes to preserve its record in future seasons. Track— Barringer's 1938 Track Team, under the coaching of Mr. Salerno and the assist- ant coach. Mr. Hofer. have enjoyed an exceptionally fine season on the cinders. They opened the outdoor track season by winning the State 880-yard relay championship at Long Branch. New Jersey. The baton passers were Captain Edward Ryan, George Rogers, Ray Speer, and Alfred Cook. The team then traveled to Princeton where Captain Ryan. National Broadjump Champion, surprised track followers by making an astounding leap of 24 feet 2 inches. Then came the Newark Board of Education Invitation Track Meet. The Big Blue tracksters made a fine showing and missed win- ning the team trophy by only I ' 2 points. The Barringer cinder-steppers then proved that they are still King of track among the Newark schools by winning a smashing victory for the twelfth consecutive year in the City Track Meet. The Montclair Invitation Meet which was held two days after the City Meet, provided the Bar- ringer boys with plenty of stiff competition. Our speedy team, however, showed its power by placing second, only I point behind the winning team. Montclair. T ie Big Blue tracksters completed their highly successful season by producing two state champs. Al Cook and John Robinson. Robinson won the State Broadjump title while Al Cook showed his heels to all competition in the 220-yard low hurdles. m The track team will lose by graduation three letter men—George Esposito. Edward Ryan and Vincent Vitiello. George Esposito earned his B in 1937 when he won the Junior City Broadjump Title and the 75-yard dash. Ryan has been out- standing as a sprinter and broadjumper. He holds the National Broadjump Tif'e and has earned two wreath B s in track. Vincent Vitiello earned his B in the 220-yard low hurdles. He has also taken part in many relay races. Baseball— Baseball is another sport in which Barringer came through with a tie for the City Title. Coming up to the last game with a chance for the title, our boys made a fine showing by defeating the league-leading West Side squad 6—3. Last June's graduation took ten letter men, including Captain Reggie Hiner: this year's class takes only two—Bud Jose, all-city center-fielder and the team's lead- ing hitter, and Arthur Prandato, the squad's manager. Our new coach. Mr. Commisa. who is pinch-hitting for Mr. Allen, will have Co- Captains Jerry Belmonte and Eddie Cordasco as the mainstays of his initial nine next spring. Fencing— The fencing season opened December 2nd in a match with the recently organ- ized squad from Weequahic High School. Remembering the long chain of victories totaling 100, the Barringer men rolled up a final score of 6—3. thus putting the team on record with its 101 st victory. Under the supervision of Dr. Gerald Cetrulo, coach, and Mr. Libero Si'oilia. adviser, the team is now looking forward to its eleventh State Championship as well as additional honors in the National Interscholastics. Graduation is depriving the school of three letter men—Pete Calcagno, who has succeeded in winning a wreath B : also Pat Feravola and Nick DiDomenico, each of whom has acquired a major B. The school honors for this season will be de- fended by Captain Boutsikaris. Co-Captain Giordano, Mason, D’Ambola. Marzulli. Ramos, and Klapphoiz. Tennis— The present tennis organization in Barringer was begun three years ago in 1936. At that time Mr. Waiter Buchanan graciously offered to be the coach of the newly formed team. Owing to the skillful guidance of Mr. Buchanan, in the three years that followed. Barringer won the City-championship twice. The first year the team was defeated in every match but prcduced some promising players. The 1937 sea- son was much better with the record of half won and half lost. Last spring the highly successful team won three-fourths of the matches. The Tennis Team in the last two years has been built around three players. Alfred Hedges. Peter Scriff. and Fred Griffin. Hedges graduated last June while Captain Griffin and Scriff are in the present graduation class. Both have received their tennis letters for their participation in this sport. In tne annual fall tournament Fred Griffin defeated Peter Scriff in the final round, thus winning the school title. The team will not be critically weakened by the loss of these members for Mr. Buchanan has a younger group ready to take their places. Among these future players are Jack Apgar. Tom Bulych, Jack Dawkins, and Eugene Cadmus. Upon these and other boys to follow, will lie the responsibility of preserving the reputation Barringer has established in High School Tennis. 9 Our Girls in Sports— The girls of Barringer participated in sports in a lively fashion although confined to intramural contests. Hockey— The Girls’ Hockey consisted of five individual teams this year. The five captains were L. Sweeney. E. Hagadorn, J. Cunliffe. T. Parelia, and C. Nicholls. At the end of the season a tournament was held to se'ecr the winning teem. By the process of elimination two outstanding teams headed by E. Hagadorn and C. Nicholls were picked. The players were so we'l matched that two games had to be played before a deciding goal finally gave the victory to E. Hagadorn's team. Basketball— Under Miss Decker’s supervision, basketball teams have been formed. The girls are learning all the techniques of this exciting sport and are looking forward to an interesting season. As spring approaches, the girls will turn their attention toward such activities as baseball and tennis. Boots and Saddle Club— Under the able assistance of Miss Edith Scalera. the Boots and Saddle Club was organized for girls interested in riding. At the first meeting more than forty girls were present and the following officers were elected: Geraldine Walsh, presi- dent: Marilyn Wertheim. vice-president, and Jane Gaitenby. secretary. The girls ride every Saturday morning at the Bellwood Park Academy in two groups—one for the advanced girls and one for the beginners. The club has some ambitious plans including a breakfast, a moonlight ride and a horse show. GIRLS HOCKEY Coach Miss C. Ethel Decker CROSS-C Coach Mr. Arthi B GIRLS Adviser Miss C. NEW JERSEY dedication 2 Dream of the past, light of the present, gift for the future—we dedi- cate this book to our American democ- racy. awakened as we are to its priceless value as a political safeguard, a social blessing, and a worthy ideal for that most difficult of all human undertak- ings—group control. “Barringer expects you to be out- standing during the next half-century. Intelligent effort, self control, and per- sistent courage will do it.” “With effort we shall meet criti- cism bravely and develop our talents: with self control we shall master our feelings; with courage, like the strong, we shall not be crushed but shall face a world of greater challenge, the world of tomorrow.” ( (ass of June, 939 “After you leave Barringer you will have to learn by experience, a method of learning for which many of you have already shown a preference. My wish for you is that the varied ex- periences you encounter will lead you into intelligent citizenship in the new world which you will help create.” 05. 2U row v, m 2 a. row “We are confident that our ex- periences in Barringer will tend toward the success we hope to attain in the future, and that our new experiences together with our training will guide us helping to influence the world of tomorrow.” ( (ass oj une, 1939 Yesterday our dear children; today glowing and hopeful youth; to- morrow men and women who face a grave and challenging future. May Cod guide you. May we, tomorrow’s men and women, who have been cherished, scolded and guided by your motherly affection, be worthy of the confidence you have in us and the hope you have for us. The spirit which in these pages lights fresh beacons along the highway of our common freedom is a precious thing. Nurture it, for while it lives, democracy too. finds new life. Though many summers will have had their day, ’though the years will take their toll, the flame of the beacons along the highway of our com- mon freedom will still be burning. Her impartial views, her cheerful and vivacious ways have been missed. But we can be comforted, and shall go on as before, because her spirit is ever with us. We take great pleasure in expressing our sincere grati- tude to those members of the faculty who have assisted us in carrying our various activities to success; to Mr Saylor for the many favors he has given us in his capacity as acting Assistant Principal; to Mrs. Burke. Mr. Vogel. Mr. Celiano. and Mr Bruder for their presence at our dances; to Miss Capen. Mrs. Blair, and Mr Stevens for their helpful hints on the year book; to Mr. Hofer for his amiable cooperation in coaching a part of our Class Day program, to Mrs. O'Loughlin. Miss Robinson. Miss Decker, and Mr Weiss for their persever- ance and time in preparing us for Commencement; to those of the office, especially Miss Rubin, who have aided us so willingly, and to Vincent Biunno for his invaluable assistance on the year book photography. “Thanks For Everything— The Thalians of endless energy and initiative were urab'e to organize in time for a picture due to their strenuous v ork on the Cavalcade. Theirs was a fine job. well done D,U. tans CLASS SONG 1 Dear Barringer your name we sing As onward we must go. In praise our many voices ring Then blending soft and low. Smiling thru a mist of tears The long road ahead. Unafraid we face the years. By your courage lead. 2 Our Alma Mater tried and true A gateway broad to life. Solid stands the white and blue. Through struggle and thru strife. Last monuments too quickly fly As each old friend departs A fleeting smile, a tear, a sigh— But gladness in our hearts. 3 Dear Barringer we leave you now. Our lessons here are done. But we take this solemn vow. May life and you be one. We shall make forever. Your mesage our creed. Honor. Truth, and Light ' where’er Wand’ring footsteps lead. They are invisible now as always to non-believers, but a clear vision to those who believe in the spirit of Democracy. We believe, and so we see those four columns supporting the American temple of Democracy as representing our rights—freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom of self determination, and fredom to pursue happiness. Freedom of speech—a gift whose special benefits are taken for granted in this restless world of today, and yet it allows us to speak out loud and strong, for and even against our government, and permits groups of people with various ideas to act openly in our nation. Freedom of religion—the greatest of blessings, the blessing that allows us to worship whom we want to. when we want to. and gives us the right to stay at home and worship no one Cod. if that suits us. Freedom of self determination—the light that brightens the path of our people, enabling them to see both sides of a polit- ical question and encouraging them to vote for their popular choice. Happi- ness. culmination of freedom's benefits, the acme of success for any country or individual, showing to the world at large that we. due to our freedoms, are a prosperous and contented nation, and a nation at peace with Cod and ourselves. As the delicate tracings on a time-worn manuscript become indistinct through the ages, and as the precious seconds of time speed by. so too does the luster of Democracy become dull and indistinct Only when these price- less things, which we take for granted, are gone, and are beyond our reach, do we realize their infinite value Let us awake before it is too late. We must not forget the materials of which Democracy is made, or of the struggles we have weathered, gaining security in our endurance We should recall to mind the message of the Magna Carta. Democracy's cornerstone, and the Democratic principles of our Declaration and Constitution Let us not despair in these trying times of racial hatred and aggression, but look for salvation in the prophetic words of Abraham Lincoln —these things too shall pass away—. Calm will follow strife, and our four columns will remain firm for tomor- row’s nations C. D M the Se easoni 84 - u l unn 933— Our class was born at Barringer to live Four years of youth and work and play and dreams. The park in flames of Autumn's glowing fire Was welcoming the merry throng anew. Our destiny our Alma Mater's light. Our colors royal blue and purest white. Spring 936— Five months within the hallowed halls of home Had brought us friends, a new outlook on life Exhilerating winter made a fairy scene Of campus sleeping under downy white. Then spring—and summer's declaration. At last some tests; and then— Vacation! Slu unm 1936 — Arisen to the ranks of Sophomores We stooped to conquer Freshman innocent. We cheered our football team to victory And learned a bit about a foreign tongue. We smiled our supercilious smiles and thought Without us Barringer would be but naught. Spring 193 7— We silly Sophomores sitting in the sun Of Spring and Branchbrook Park and Barringer Bethought ourselves that soon our class would be A mighty group of labor, organized We struggled through our painful first exam.
