DRIFTING down from the foothills, always urged on from behind by ever-watchful cowboys, the herd is gradually nearing the corral in the center of the plain. Smoky branding fires, bawling calves, plunging horses and yip-yipping cowboys, all form part of the maelstrom that will soon swallow them. Fearful, they hesitate to enter the corral, and take one last look at the hazy hills in the distance. They are headed for their last round-up. Now that the herd is within the corral, it is being inspected. Only the fittest can survive the close scrutiny of the practiced eyes of the cowboys. The drive is to be long and arduous, so that only the animals in top form may be included in the group that is to go. There is an air of uneasiness as the cattle mill around. They sense something unusual, but cannot quite grasp what is to come. When the selected herd is finally started down the trail, they move along slowly at first, then more rapidly. They appear eager to see what is before them. They go on. until at last, they are lost in the cloud of dust that surrounds them. For four years we have been working toward our objective. Now we have been tested, until only those meeting the requirements of the final inspection remain to go upon the long drive . A little nervous, and yet eager, we stand at the gateway, ready to leave.
