THE LAST ROUND-UP published by The Senior Class of January, 1934 Barringer High School Newark, New Jersey The Round-Up We are gathered at the round-up To recall before we go. The good times we’ve had together. At the Barringer Rancho. We were greenhorns when we started. All the trails seemed new and strange; But in the years we’ve ridden. We have learned to love the range. Through the cactus and the sagebrush That were scattered o’er the plain. We have sat our bucking broncos And have held a steady rein. Now we’re slipping from the saddles That were cinched four years ago. When we joined up with this outfit At the Barringer Rancho. Mary B. Hayes DEDICATION In deep appreciation of his most patient guidance and untiring aid, we most grate- fully dedicate this, our year book, The Last Round-Up,’ to Irving J. Accompanist “THE LAST ROUND-UP Page Nine 19 3 4 DRIFTING down from the foothills, always urged on from behind by ever-watchful cowboys, the herd is gradually nearing the corral in the center of the plain. Smoky branding fires, bawling calves, plunging horses and yip-yipping cowboys, all form part of the maelstrom that will soon swallow them. Fearful, they hesitate to enter the corral, and take one last look at the hazy hills in the distance. They are headed for their last round-up. Now that the herd is within the corral, it is being inspected. Only the fittest can survive the close scrutiny of the practiced eyes of the cowboys. The drive is to be long and arduous, so that only the animals in top form may be included in the group that is to go. There is an air of uneasiness as the cattle mill around. They sense something unusual, but cannot quite grasp what is to come. When the selected herd is finally started down the trail, they move along slowly at first, then more rapidly. They appear eager to see what is before them. They go on. until at last, they are lost in the cloud of dust that surrounds them. For four years we have been working toward our objective. Now we have been tested, until only those meeting the requirements of the final inspection remain to go upon the long drive . A little nervous, and yet eager, we stand at the gateway, ready to leave. A Faculty Council, appointed by Mr. Curley, and representing the depart- ments of each major subject, conducts the election. All faculty members, however, are requested to submit individual opinions of the candidates. There are four determining factors in the final selection : (1 ) scholarship; (2) leadership; (3) service; (4) character. A limited percentage of the 4A. 4B. and 3A groups based upon attainment in scholarship, make up the eligible list. Obviously, scholarship is the basic prerequisite To that important achievement a candidate must add outstanding records made in leadership among his fellow classmates, service to his school, and the possession of a character of high type. Students sometimes feel that injustice is done in the selection of mem- bers. They should not forget that selections may be made from the whole highest third of the class. Thus in a class numbering 150. fifty people are eligible so far as scholarship is concerned. Some of those chosen may therefore not be among the best in scholarship but they make up for this lack by outstanding records in leadership, service or character. “THE LAST ROUND-UP t 19 3 4 Page Forty-four The Acropolis SEVERAL years before there was such a thing as a monthly publication in Barringer, there existed a paper known as the ANNUAL. The scope of this magazine was entirely literary, including poetry, essays, and short stories. Besides providing much enjoyment, this publication, issued during the years 1857 to 1880. also proved a keen incentive to students who sought an outlet for their literary attempts. In 1856. one year preceding the first publication of the ANNUAL, an enterprising class produced a paper called the HIGH SCHOOL JOURNAL. Each issue of this magazine consisted of but one copy which was written in a record-book. Between the years 1859 to 1861, four publications similar to the HIGH SCHOOL JOURNAL were introduced into the school. The most important of these papers was the COMPETITOR, several issues of which are retained in the school files. By 1877 there appeared two more publications, the HESPERIAN RECORD and the MONTAGU ROUND TABLE which flourished for about two years. At the end of this time, however, the ANNUAL remained the only school journalistic paper. Then in 1899 came Barringer’s present publication, the ACROPOLIS, a paper which has grown to such an extent not only in popularity but also in monetary value, that it would be almost impossible to fancy the existence of Barringer without it. May the years to come in the life of the ACROPOLIS be as successful as those in the past have been. Page Forty-five ’’THE LAST ROUND-UP’’ 1934 Modern Language Honor Croup THE Modern Language Honor Croup has taken the place of the French, Spanish and Italian clubs. The pupils who do A or B work and who have reached their third year in the study of the languages are elected to this group. They have a key or pin bearing the emblem of the country whose language they study. The meetings are held once or twice a week, and most of the programs are arranged by the students. The individual groups also take trips to New York to see plays and foreign ships pertaining to the language they study. The adviser of the French Honor Society is Mrs. Carleu, and the student leaders are: President. Eugene Dorfman; Vice-President. Adele Lehlbach; Secretary. Ruth Cronheim. The 4A members are Mary Hayes. Elizabeth Wood. Minnette and Jeannette Baker. Helen Coucher. Winifred Perry. Margaret O’Neill. Betsy Kaufmann. Ruth Wentworth. Victor Califano. Dora Rizzolo. Estelle Vitale and Jean West. The Spanish Honor Society is under the direction of Mr. Zweibel. The 4A members are: Dorothy Baker. Genevieve Pellechia, Armando Russo, Placid Anelli, and Aurelio Mancuso. The Italian Honor Society is under the direction of Miss Lucchina. “THE LAST ROUND-UP 1934 Page Forty-six The Science Club THE Science Club existing in Barringer today has grown out of the Agassiz Society which held prominence in the old Newark High School for the last twenty years of the last century. However, with the removal of the school from downtown to its present location, came the organization of several small clubs such as the Bird Club and the Nature Club. It was not until 1914 that the Science Club we know was formed. Since the very beginning of the Science Club, it has proved to be the largest and one of the most popular clubs in school, its membership reaching the two hundred mark. The students from the second year classes in biology and the junior and senior classes in biology, chemistry, and physics are eligible for membership in the club. The club officers, who are members of these classes, work under the guidance of one of the science teachers who acts as faculty adviser. Programs are presented monthly. These often include lectures by scientists, visits from representatives of large corporations, motion pictures, and liquid air experiments. The fact that the lecture room is always crowded on the day of the Science Club meeting certainly assures the popularity of this organization. Page Forty-seven “THE LAST ROUND-UP’ Girls' Leaders Club President Vice-President Secretary Adviser Alice Hildebrand Marion Hill Anna Velardi . Florence S. Burley THE Girls’ Leaders’ Club, reorganized this term, is one of the youngest of Barringer s many organizations. The Club corresponds to the Boys Leaders’ Club in that their main ideal is to develop leaders of the members. Also as with other of our clubs, the Girls’ Leaders’ Club tries to promote the Barringer ideals of Truth. Honor and Light. It has given its members the opportunity to show thoughfulness and consideration for others. First, they have tried to carry on the good work started by the old Girls’ Service League of which this club is an outgrowth. They have provided some of the less fortunate with clothing and food; and second, a system of corridor patrol during periods, which they believe if successful, will be a service rendered for the welfare of the school. We extend hearty congratulations to the members of the Girls’ Leaders’ Club and wish them luck in future years. “THE LAST ROUND-UP’’ 1934 Page Forty-eight Leaders' Club Captain ...... William Wray Robert Beams Lieutenants ...... William Kiefer Vincent Crasso Cirvin Cuthbert THE Barringer Boys' Leaders’ Club has become an organization that enjoys especially the respect of the students and of the faculty. Since its formation in 1931 it has gradually risen from a state of obscurity to a place of importance in our school life. Unfortunately it cannot grant mem- bership to all those who are deserving of the honor. To become a Leader one must have character as well as a fair scholarship rating. Honesty and a willingness to cooperate are also among other qualifications required of the members. The chief duty of the boys is to preserve order in the halls. Moreover, they are expected to conduct themselves as Leaders should, and unobtrusively to attend to any matters concerning the welfare of the school. The main principle of the organization is to further the Barringer ideals of “Truth. Honor, and Light ”. Page Forty-nine THE LAST ROUND-UP 1934 The Library Staff President Vice-President Secretary Treasurer Ruth Wentworth Minnette Baker Molly Sallans Jeannette Baker THE Library Staff is one of the most important organizations in the school. It consists of students chosen by the librarian who are willing to offer their services. These students must be trustworthy and have a high scholastic standing, for they hold a very responsible position. Every member is obliged to serve at least three periods a week in the library. The members charge books, assist students in finding books for reference work, keep the library in order and assume full responsibility in the absence of the librarian. Besides this work, the members of the staff plan various social activities. Every term a faculty tea or a theater party is planned by the Staff. The tea takes place in the library, and is attended by members of both the faculty and the Staff. The theater party is always especially enjoyed by the members since they attend a play in New York. This term the members of the Library Staff are planning to visit other school libraries in the city. Recently the Staff has become a member in the New Jersey Library Council, which will enable them to become acquainted with various libraries in the state. ‘‘THE LAST ROUND-UP” 1934 Page Fifty The Band THE Band, one of Barringer's newest organizations was started in 1930 under the able leadership of Mrs. Margaret O'Loughlin. For the past three years the Band has given its hearty support to the Big Blue on the football field. This year they have also played for the Sophomore Assembly Programs. It has met with great popularity in the past years and membership is open to anyone playing a musical instrument. We congratulate the Band on their fine work, and wish them success in future years. Page Fifty-one “THE LAST ROUND-UP 19 3 4 Class History Feb. 1930--A group of freshmen entered Barringer, eyes wide and mouths agape. Sophomores annoyed them and seniors scorned them. For a year these poor freshmen endured this. Then came retribution! Feb. 1931--They became sophomores, arrogant sophomores. They wreaked vengeance upon their underlings, and yet appeared innocent in the eyes of their teachers. Feb. 1932--Now these people were juniors. Upper classmen! A little slow in getting started, they finally chose Mr. Townsend as their class advisor, and elected Charles Eccles as President. Roger Williams as vice-president. Armando Ventola as treasurer, and Marie Gamma as secretary. Sept. 1932--The results of this term s election were: Charles Eccles. pres- ident; Virginia San Filippo, vice-president; Peter Lordi. treasurer, and Marie Gamma, secretary. The class decided to give a social. What a success it turned out to be! Feb. 1933--Having made Armando Ventola. president; John Kemp, vice- president; Peter Lordi, treasurer, and Marie Gamma once more secretary, the class proceeded to benefit the school by giving a dance. It turned out to be the success of the season, rivaled only by the reception given to the 4As by the 4Bs. A Liquid Air Show, that practically everyone in the school attended, was also presented this term. Sept. 1933--With William Fischer as president. Alice Hildebrand as vice- president. Norman Lawson as treasurer, and Marie Gamma for the fourth time secretary, the class entered its Senior A term. Early in the term, they gave a Football Dance. They ended the term with a commencement that was second only to their year book. ‘‘THE LAST ROUND-UP 19 3 4 Page Fifty-two % A K HAT a wonderful day to wander over this huge ranch! The future seems bright, when it is realized that, with a few exceptions, most of the varsity will be back for two years more of playing. The team was rather discouraged by their showing in the beginning of the season, when they were beaten by Paterson Central, Irvington. West Side. East Side. Central and Montclair. The boys finally got into their stride at the end of the schedule, when they beat South Side. 32-6, and then victoriously trampled over East Orange 7-6. “THE LAST ROUND-UP” 1934 Page Fifty-six Page Fifty-seven BARRINGER'S Park Squad just completed its first season under Mr. Stamelman. formerly of Syracuse University. Mr. Stamelman was also coach of the B. H. S. Freshman Team. At the beginning of the season, the team’s prospects did not seem very promising, but as the season progressed, they proved to be a great surprise. They played well through their whole schedule, tieing Good Council twice, tieing City Home and West Side, and beating the Barringer Freshmen and Bloomfield second team. They completed their season with just one defeat, and that was by the Barringer second team. Park Squad Cross Country ALTHOUGH the Barringer Cross Country team has not had a very successful season, due to inexperience, this does not mean that the boys have not worked hard. Although Damiano, Tarrant, and Caprio were the outstanding harriers this year, enough credit can not be given to the remaining boys. In the city meet, the team pushed Central to the city championship. In the National Interscholastic meet the flash and grit of the Barringer squad again exhibited itself. This year Mr. Payton succeeded Mr. Moller in coaching the Barringer hill and dalers, and due to his careful handling of the boys, we can expect a well groomed team next year. THE LAST ROUND-UP11 19 3 4 Page Fifty-eight B and Chevron Girls BY a rather recently introduced point system, our Barringer girls have been enabled to gain enough points to acquire a much coveted “B For receiving excellent marks in gymnastics, which include punctuality, co-operation and preparation, a girls can win chevrons and stars. After she has secured three of each of these, she is entitled to wear a Barringer “B”. We have several girls in the graduating class who have been fortunate enough to get their letters. These are Alice Hildebrand. Marion Hill, Virginia San Filippo, Marie Gamma, Doris Bismarck, Helen Alt, Mary Buinno, and Margaret O'Neill. We also have a few girls with us who have been able to fill their back- grounds and so have the distinction of wearing complete emblems. These girls are Minnette Baker, Jeannette Baker, Doris Granath, and Jean West. Page Fifty-nine THE LAST ROUND-UP” 1934 B'Men ROBERT BEAMS Boh first played in 1930 on the park «quad. In 1931 he advanced to the second team and received bis ‘B-2”. 1932 found Bob one of the stars of Coach Salerno’s team. For his work he was rewarded with a B . This year found Boh out for the usual position, but a serious injury early in the season forced him to the sidelines. His teammates will sorely miss him. for Bob was better than average as a linesman. WILLIAM BRINE Bill, one of the few two letter men to graduate, started his athletic career by making the varsity X-country team in his freshman year. In 1931 the X country team won the City Championship, and Bill received his major letter for his share of the work. This did not satisfy his athletic prowess, and in 1932, he received a minor B” a a varsity diver on the swimming team. Bill has also ! een outstand- ing in the l oys‘ tennis tournaments, winning one and being a finalist in the other. VICTOR CALIFANO Victor is one of Barringer's famous fencers. He started bis athletic career with a hang in 1932, by making the varsity ami winning every match in which he fought. In 1933 Victor was again out- standing, engaging in eight bout to helt the team complete a very successful season. Although Bar ringer has always had an All-State fencing team, never the less she shall miss Victor's adept blade greatly. BILL FISCHER Bill is one of Barringer's most outstanding ath- lete . In 1930. Bill made his first attempt to become a varsity swimmer. In his next year, he was awarded his first major letter. In 1932. Bill Iwcarne an out- standing merman, but Bill's stellar performance came last season. At this time Bill and three team mates won the 160 yd. relay, breaking the city rec- ord. Besides a wreath emblem he received for this work. Bill has won three major letters. SOL FISHMAN In 1932, Sol was the manager of the Outdoor State Championship Track team. For his fine work he was awarded a wreath emblem and a gold track shoe. Sol was also elected manager of the X-country team for 1932 and 1933. In 1933, besides managing the team, Sol also ran on it and received his minor letter. CHESTER HERRINC Chet has seen service in track circles for three years. He ran in the interclass relays in 1931. He begain to run the dashes, and in these together with the broad-jump, he scored the required number of points to earn his letter. Chet also was a mcml er of the Freshman X-country team and went out for the varsity in 1930 and 1932 For his faithful service here he received a 'B-2 . DAN jONES Who has not heard of Captain Dan Jones? The medley relay and the 100 yd. free style are Dan's sjiecialties. This year the medley relay won the City Championship and Dan came through with the 100 yd. State Title, in one minute and one second. After this Dan won the Cityr 100 yd. Championship. Dan will take with him his major B s and his wreath emblem. Init he will leave in Barringer the memory of a wonderful athlete. JOHN KEMP For two years, 1930 and 1931, John built up a foundation of footfall technique, receiving a B 2' for his efforts. 1932 found him as a varsity end for which he got his B . His ability to handle and catch a footfall has earned him much glory while at Barringer. In 1933. due to a change in the X. J. I. A. A. rulings. John was made ineligible. The team will surely miss his snappy brand of ball playing. MANLIO POLCI In his freshman year Polci had the distinction of winning two major letters and a gold footfall, as a shot-putter and as a tackle on the footlall team. Manny” has proven to be one of the mainstays of the Barringer line during his four years of school. He is the proud possessor of five major letters and a few gold footfalls. Polci has received honorable mention as all-citv tackle. His graduation leaves a hole in the team which will be hard to fill. JAMES POLK Even since 1930, when he first went out for track. Jimmie has been one of our most consistent point scorers. He is the holder of the Dickinson Novice 70 yd. Dash, and the New Jersey 70 yd. Dash rec ords. In the Kearny Relays. Jimmie helped to set a new record in the 880 yd. relay. For these accom- plishments he was awarded two wreath emblems and two pold track shoes, the highest athletic award in Barringer. MICHAEL RUBINO Mike is an excellent example of grit and perse- verance. F'or four years he has struggled hard to get on the varsity footlall team. His grim deter- mination to win his B earned for him the admira- tion and respect of hi schoolmate . In 1932 he received his B-2 and this year has found him a varsity guard. As a result Mike received his long waited letter. A real athlete and a true Barringeritc - that's Mike. ARTHUR TUOSTO Art went out for swimming and track but it wa in footlall that he showed hi true mettle. He spent the year of 1931 learning the rudiments of footlall and in 1932, he far outdistanced the other candidates for center position. Consequently he received his letter. This year found Art again at center and tier- forming well Art is a fine specimen of Barringer's l est football men. Page Sixty-one • THE LAST ROUND-UP” 1934 Hockey THIS fall when hockey was resumed, our new coach, Miss Decker found so many enthusiasts, that it was necessary for each grade rather than each year to have a team of its own. Captains were elected with these results: 4A. Alice Hildebrand: 4B. Margaret Decker; 3A-1, janet Brooks: 3A-2. Helen Pellechia; 2A. Lily Pinneo; 2B-1, jean Finger; 2B-2. Sue Petrozini. The season proved to be an exceptionally exciting one. as the juniors and seniors were so evenly matched, that it was hard to tell until the last game was ended, which team really deserved the Championship. After a hard fought game the 4A's came out the victors, by defeating janet Brook’s team by a bare 2-0 victory. Those chosen for the all-star hockey team were: Gladys Lockwood, Anna Di Leila, janet Brooks. Doris Bismarck, Helen Alt. Helen Pellechia, Marie Gamma, Marion Hill, Gloria Chen. Virginia San Filippo, and Janet Ricliano. “THE LAST ROUND-UP 1934 Page Sixty-two ft R-i CtttUt ID rrrrujj7fr Ttt Trill iuitj _ (Uihos, TTrrf r - nth ' fT j-rj ■f p r r • f‘ r - U-PP UWJJ smjj £fio vs i -J. hi. . When we've pulled stakes to stray In a land far away On the vast range of which we had dreamed. Then a memory comes and a longing For the bunk-house and round-ups of yore, And we think of the past That has vanished so fast And the home range we want more and more. II They gave us our reins and our saddles. We rode out wearing boots that were spurred. And without these we know The pace would have been slow We’d be left with the great milling herd. For there’s a wide rangeland to conquer Down a trail marked with hardship and bliss. When our conquering’s done. When our brands we have won. Then in reverie we’ll drift back to this. Chorus Four years we’ve worked with this outfit. Now we ride out on our way. Years are gone but the memory lingers To guide through the dark to the day. When at last we’ve swung down from our saddles. Then memories come with a sig h Of those four years that are gone past returning. Of those days in Barringer High. Among the relics of the early stone carvers can be found outstanding ex- amples of characteristic difference— distinctive ability that was the forerun- ner for the artist and the craftsman of today. And just as primitive record- ings in stone show varying degrees of superiority, so does a Colyer-produced Annual stand out distinctive of the full possibilities of the highly-developed graphic arts of today. COLYER PRINTING COMPANY SUSSEX AVENUE AND DEY STREET - NEWARK, N. J. The Class of June, 1934 PRESENTS The Athenaeum Barringer High School NEWARK, N. J. Foreword JT has always been the practice of senior classes to choose and work out in a novel manner some theme upon which they have based their year book. In this way, a great opportunity is offered to com- pile and record their activities at Barringer in an in- teresting fashion. The student body, therefore, has always looked forward to this particular publication with the greatest of interest. In every case the title has proven to be the main feature, and it is chosen on the basis of the theme. However, the class of June 34 has taken the initiative upon an idea which it hopes shall be adopted by future classes. This use of various themes has necessitated many different titles. Many times, some class has, in an endeavor to be original, adopted a title which bears no relation to the Acropolis. This has gradually developed the idea that the senior year book is a separate publication. In reality, it is only the Senior Edition of the Acropolis and this connection must not be lost. Therefore, to remedy this mistake in the future, the name Anthenaeum has been adopted by the class of June '34 for its book. Almost a century ago the first magazine appeared at Barringer High. It consisted of a drawing and a few essays on character, copied by hand into a notebook, which was passed from student to student. The magazine was called the Anthenaeum, meaning House of Wisdom. It seems unfortunate that the name of this publication, probably one of the first in any high school in the United States, was dis- continued. We are glad to revive it and we hope for the approval and cooperation of the other classes. Dedication We respectfully dedicate this, our year book. The Athenaeum to our dear friend and advisor, Robert J. Hagaman, in appreciation of his aid and guidance. Page Six Raymond B. Accompanist THE ATHEN EUM JUNE 1934 Editorial E have completed here an orbit, a trip around our sun, basking in its rays, gathering knowledge as best we could, and preparing ourselves for new experiences. From our zenith we retrace the progress of the last four years. But there are more paths to travel. A single revolution is but a fraction of our destiny, and we must pass through many phases before our journeying is through. Now the time has come to go whirling into the cold of space. Though it is hard to desert warmth and security for the strange and uncertain, we look ahead expectantly to new sights and adventures. The b x)k, which is published monthly under the supervision of Miss Natalie Jones.is composed of work exclusively by the students. An Acropolis Pin Award is given for three terms of service on a board. Pjge Fifty-two THE ATHENAEUM JUNE 1934 THE NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY Lewis Walker....................................President Charles Hayes..............................Vice-President Ruth Cronheim...................................Secretary HE work of the Honor Society is directed chiefly toward improving the w school. Under the direction of Miss Natalie Jones, activities include selling hand books, tutoring students and patroling corridors. Members are elected by the Teachers' G uncil from the 3A, 4B and -1A classes. Consideration is given to the qualities of scholarship, leadership, service and character. Page Fijty-tiyree THE ATHENAEUM JUNE 1934 MODERN LANGUAGE HONOR GROUP £7 'HE Modern Language Honor Group has taken the place of the Italian, French, Spanish and German Clubs. Pupils who do A or B work and have reached the third year in the study of these languages are eligible for membership. Each member is awarded a key or pin bearing the emblem of the country whose language he studies. Programs are usually arranged by the students. Picnics, museum and theatre trips are included. Miss Lucchina directs the Italian Society, Mrs. Carleu the French, Mr. Zweibel the Spanish and Miss Smith the German. Page Fifty-four THE ATHENAEUM JUNE 1934 THE SCIENCE CLUB David Hirschhorn Roberta Bbrmingham Clarissa Meyer Edward Gibbons Janet Brooks Walter J. Dumm President Vice-President - Secretary Chairman of Program Membership Committee Faculty Advisor £7““HE Science Club, as it is today, was founded in 1914 with Mr. Dumm and Mr. Frederick H. Beals as faculty advisors. At the present time the club is the largest in Barringer, its membership numbering about two hundred students. Its meetings are divided between student programs, and talks and demonstrations by men of the surrounding communities, prominent in the scicntifc world. The members of the Science Club are students from the Biology, Physics, and Chemistry classes and also those particularly interested in the sciences. Pag Fifty fit THE ATHENAEUM JUNE 1934 THE BOYS' LEADERS CLUB Vincent Grasso Girvin Cuthbert Anthony Bauer John Hobbis Michael Desiderio - Captain Lieutenants (7 HE Boys' Leaders Club has become a much respected organization since its recent formation. The membership in the club is limited, since one must have character, good scholarship and the qualities of a leader to become a member. The chief duty of the boys is to maintain order in the corridors. The Barringer ideals of Truth, Honor and Light” are especially emphasized. Mr. Saylor, the faculty advisor, has made it possible for the outstanding members of the Club to obtain a letter similar to the 'B-2,” the only difference being that the letter L” replaces the figure two. Page Fifty-six THE ATHENi€UM JUNE 1934 THE GIRLS' LEADERS CLUB Katherine Bishop.........................President Mildred Hatch.............................Vice-President Ann Velardi..............................Secretary Victoria Bishop - - - .... Advisor (7 HE Girls' Leaders Club, one of the youngest organizations in the school. is an outgrowth of the Girls' Service League. The aim of the club is to make leaders of its members and to give the girls an opportunity to show consideration for others. This term, lavatory squads were formed by the club to keep the girls' lavatories clean. The study of etiquette was taken up and found interesting. Because the girls wanted to help the less fortunate, they collected old clothes. The Club’s slogan is Truth, Right, and Honor. Let's give the girls our heartiest cooperation. They deserve it. Page Fifty-seven THE ATHENAEUM JUNE 1934 LATIN CLUB Roberta Bermingham Marian Heinemann Alice Craven Joseph Santangelo Muriel Albers.................................Scriba Margaret Sutherland...........................Censor Janet Hbrold |.................... , Gladys Pullin HE Latin Club, one of Barringer's younger organizations, was started by Mr. Haulenbeeck in 1925 at the request of the students. The club, generally known as the Populus Romanus, is conducted according to Roman precedent. The entertainment, consisting of the study of Roman life, manners, and customs is provided by the aediles. Each term the club awards two prizes, one to the person who makes the best speech at one of the meetings, and the other to the senior who has received th highest marks throughout the four year course in Latin. Consuls Praetors Page Fifty-tight THE ATHEN UM JUNE 1934 THE LIBRARY GUILD ONE of the most responsible organizations in the school is the Library Guild. It is unique in Barringer in that it has all the privileges of a student government. Only students with excellent records are eligible, and at least three periods a week are required of all members. The guild is responsible for the care of the library in the absence of the librarian; learns how to help other students with reference work; and is always more than busy with the general work of the library. Incidentally, the training received has often proved sufficient for former students to secure positions in public libraries. The guild has a number of outside social activities. Included in these are the theatre party and the faculty tea held every term. The guild is a member of the New Jersey School Library Council and through this it comes in contact with other library guilds all over the state. President, Elizabeth Bean; Vice-President, Josephine Percell; Secretary, Shirley Moll; Treasurer, Anna Casiero. Page Fiflj-mne THE ATHHN UM JUNE 1934 THE ORCHESTRA OINCE its organization in 1912 the orchestra has occupied an important place in our school life. Under the able coaching of Miss Robinson it has furnished many enjoyable hours for us in assembly. Membership in the orchestra is open to students interested in music and sufficiently accomplished upon a musical instrument. P tge Sixty THE ATHENAEUM JUNE 1934 FENCING ZT is safe to say that the chief sport in which Barringer excels, as far as uninterrupted victories are concerned, is fencing. At the end of this season the Barringer Fencing Team will have completetd its fifth consecutive State Championship—our present captain. Don Cetrulo, having been on the last three of them. It would be unfair not to mention the fact that the Barringer Fencing Team ventures further than just high and prep school competition. Barringer has defeated many Freshman and Junior Varsity College teams in the East, such as Drew, Princeton, St. John's, Seth Low and West Point, and has also entered the National Interscholastic Meets. In the National Individual Interscholastics of last year, three Barringer men appeared in the finals. Captain Don Cetrulo, one of the three, just missed first place by one point. In 1934 the Blue foilists captured the first National Interscholastic Team Champion- ship. By virtue of these facts, fencing was made a major sport in Barringer, and the team is now ranked as being the strongest high school team in the country. Much credit is due to Dr. Gerard I. Cetrulo for his able coaching of the team, to Mr. V. L. Sibilia, our encouraging faculty advisor, to Captain Don Cetrulo, for his able leadership, and to David Hirschhorn and Victor Cicetti, our industrious managers. Page Sixty-two THE ATHEN EUM JUNE 1934 SWIMMING OUR city champion mermen have come through a season of stiff competition in fine style. Although our natators have met defeat against stronger squads, the team has managed to keep its city title clean by sinking their rivals in the city league. As a result of their fine showing the team was well able to retain the city championship. Coach Arthur Payton deserves much praise for his splendid coaching of the boys. Along with Manager Howard Gann, major letters will be awarded to Captain Allsop, Miller, Schmitt, Feind, Wilson, and Del Tufo for their excellent work. Page Sixty-three THE ATHEN EUM JUNE 1934 B AND CHEVRON GIRLS BY a new point system introduced in Barringer last year, many of our girls have been able to gain enough points to acquire a coveted 'B.'' The awarding of points is based on athletic activities and gym marks which include punctuality, attendance, cooperation, preparation and posture. Point awards are made in the form of stars and chevrons. Upon completing an emblem which requires a thousand points, a girl is entitled to wear a B. We have several girls in the graduating class who have succeeded in get- ting their letters. They are Emma Karpowicz. Muriel Waugh, Elizabeth Bean, Hazel Bulman, Adele Lehlbach, Betty Schott, Catherine Bishop, Janet Williams. Roberta Bermingham, Ruth Groves, Clarissa Meyer, Helen Mulford, Anna Di Leila, and Marie Macchiaverna. Page Sixty-four THE ATHEN EUM JUNE 1934 BASEBALL 7J T the close of the 1931 season, baseball was erased from the Barringer sports book because of a depleted treasury. The following spring found Barringer without any representation on the diamond. Then, when the 1933 season rolled around, there was a general movement throughout the city to revive interest in the national pastime. The outcome of the movement was the formation of intra mural teams. From these teams were picked the best players, who represented each high school in an elimination contest to decide the city championship. Unfortunately, Barringer, who was favored to capture the title, was eliminated by Central. This year Mr. Allen has taken over the coaching reins left vacant by Mr. Stammelman's departure from our school. A twelve game schedule has been arranged for the teams by Manager Robert Dutton. Ted Duay who is a mem- ber of the 4A class has been elected to captain the team. Page Sixty-fire THE ATHEN EUM JUNE 1934 B .Men Joshph Caruso Although J« c received a minor letter for being a capable hurdler, his most successful sport is foothall. Joe's football career is a good example of what perseverance can accomplish. He went out for foothall in '30. 31. and ‘32 without mak- ing the varsity, but. not discouraged in the least, he came back in '33 and played a bang-up game at half-back. For his noble work on tire gridiron he received his major B. Joe was well liked by all his team-mates and he will be greatly missed when the football and track seasons come along. Vincient Grasso Vinnic may truthfully be called a super- athlete. If there is any event, whether it be the 440. 880, or the mile, put Vinnie in it. and with grit and stamina he'll bring home the bacon. He started his athletic career in 1931. in which year he had little success, but with undaunted spirit he came back in 1932 and won the senior half mile in the city meet. From that time on his career has been filled with record-breaking per- formances in several events. In 1933. after completing a fine season, he was unanimously elected to captain the 1934 aggregation. Under his able leadership the team became one of the strongest Bjrringer has ever had. Vinnic is the holder of many records, the most important of which is the national champion- ship in the half mile, his favorite event. He is a wreath B. major B. and gold track shoe man. besides having one of the best scholastic records in his class. Anthony Accomando Achee first played foothall in 1931. but be- cause of lack of experience he was sent to the Park Squad. In '32 he made the second team and saw quite a bit of service, but it was in '33 that he showed his class by getting a berth on the varsity. Achee played a clean, hard game but unfortunately he suffered a leg injury in the middle of the season and it was not until the close of the season that he was again able to show his mettle. Achee also tried his hand at track and baseball, meeting with great success in both. He is an excellent ball player and is expected to star in the revived sport. Charles Boutsikaris Butxy has upheld the fame of fencing in Barringer by putting forth his utmost efforts in supporting his team. He has always been a close runner-up of his own captain, as was shown last year when he took second place in the State Championship Tournament and fourth place in the National Intcrscholastic Tournament. Although Butzy's greatest success lies in fencing, he has also been active on the football team, an inter-class basketball team, and the boxing tournaments, in which he won the welter-weight title. During his four years at Barringer. Butzy has attained three major B's. two wreath B's. and two medals, as well as the appreciation and respect of his team- mates. Page Sixty-six THE ATHEN EUM JUNE 1934 Dante Cetrulo Although, in his junior year. Don earned a major letter for football, his althlctic success in Barringer is centered mainly around fencing. Don made the varsity fencing team in his freshman year and has captained the team during his last three years at Barringer. As a result of his suc- cess in fencing. Don has earned five block B's and four wreath B's. Altogether lie carries away with him ten emblems, and several medals, and above all. his skill, which will mean a great loss to Barringer. Don holds the State Champion- ship title for 1933. and is considered one or the best intcrscholastic fencers in the country, by virtue of the fact that he placed second in the National Intcrscholastic Tournament in 1933. and first in the 193-1 National tourney. Michael Scardeville Scardeville first donned a football suit in '32 and since then his career has been full of progress. For his spirit and perseverance, Scardeville was singled out by Coach Salerno as a hoy with bright prospects for the future, but, lacking the experience of the varsity men. Mike was shipped to the Park Squad where he easily made the first team. In 1933 he was given a chance as varsity center and he made good. Because of his excellent de- fensive work and because Ik- was so full of fight. Mike was nicknamed Scrappy by G ach Salerno. He was given a major letter for his work on the gridiron. Mike did not confine his activities to football alone, being active also in track and intra-mural basketball. He is a true athlete. Philip Visam Phil is another of our famous fencers at Barringer. His four years at Barringer have seen a great, though gradual, improvement in his fencing, as is shown by the fact that in his sopho- more year he earned a minor B. in his junior year a major B. and in his last year a major B a wreath B. and a gold medal. Although Phil's most successful sport in Barringer has been fencing, he was also out for tennis and was as- sistant manager of the foothall teams of 1932 and 1933. Another honor is also due to Phil, and that is the fact that he stands out as one of Barringer's scholar-athletes, having attained a high standing in both studies and athletics. William Hall Bill is a two letter nun. having turned in excellent performances in both foothall and track. His athletic career in both these sports started in 1931. In foothall he started from the bottom, going to the Park sauad his first year. But the) couldn't keep a ginni man down and 1932 found him with a spot on the varsity. In 1933 Bill played a starring game throughout the season and was rewarded with a well-earned major B. In track Bill has made a brilliant record for himself, and as a result he was given a major B in 1932 and 1933. His excellent performance in the high hurdles has marked him as one of our snappiest high hurdlers. His graduation leases a spot which will be very hard to fill. Rolland Hill Although Rolland went out for swimming and track, in the latter of which he received a minor B for his fine work as a pole v a ulter, his favorite dish is foothall. It was in football that he showed his true spirit. In 1931 he was on the Park Squad where he learned the- rudiments of the game. In 1932 he saw enough service to earn his major letter. In '33 he was elected captain by his team-mates and played an excellent game throughout the season. Hill leaves Barringer in proud possession of two major letters. Alfred Scherer Fred first answered the call of football in 1932. He immediately won the admiration of his fellow plavcrs because of his wonderful work, easily making the varsity in his first year out. In 1933 Fred again answered the call and he again won a place for himself on the regular line-up. Fred was a hard, clean player and one of the best de- fensive units that Barringer has had in a long time. Fred was also active in track, earning a minor letter for his sincere efforts. The possessor of two major letters, he leaves the school with great respect from his team-mates and coach. Edward Hai.lican Eddie began his athletic career in 1930 when he made the varsity swimming team as a diver. His work that season netted him a minor letter, as swimming was not a major sport at that time. The following year he came out with renewed confidence and earned more than the necessary- number of points for a major letter. In the city- meet that year Eddie came a close second in the diving event. He also tried his hand at track, competing as a junior pole vaultcr in which event he placed second in the city meet. Page Sixty-seven THE ATHENLEUM JUNE 1934 David Hirschhorn Every team has a manager, and David was fortunate enough to hold that position on the famous undefeated fencing team for two consecu- tive years. Before entering into fencing activities. David went out for tennis. He became assistant manager of the tennis team in 1932, and. in 1933 (the same year that he was made manager of the fencing team), was made manager of the tennis team. For his efforts in tennis David earned two minor B's. However, it was during his last two years at Barringer, as manager of the fencing team, that David earned two major B's and two wreath B's. David has worked hard for the fencing team, managing its affairs very well, and we hope that his successor will follow his good example. Vincent Guarino Archer Wilson Archer who came to Barringer from Kentucky in September, 1933, has had a short but brilliant athletic career at Barringer. Going out for swim- ming in his first year at Barringer, he made the varsity with little difficulty. His favorite events have been the 40 and 100 yard races in which he has shown great ability as a sprinter. During the season Arch garnered many points in dual meets, being one of the team's most reliable men. For his prowess and speed Arch gained the name Kentucky Flash. To wind up a successful sea- son, Arch turned in a splendid performance in the city meet, placing third in both of his favorite events. The departure of this Southern flash will be greatly felt by the Big Blue swimmers. Gerald Romano TRACK (7 HIS year’s team, ably captained by Vincent Grasso, is one of the strongest Barringer has ever had. It placed in every meet in which it entered, and has brought back many trophies to Barringer. During the indoor season just completed, the team took two heart-breaking second places in the Sunday Call and National Meets. But they did not let this affect them and instead they entered the State Meet with renewed courage and captured the championship. Now with the coming of Spring, the boys are prepared for a strenuous outdoor campaign. Barringer has the enviable position of winning the city meet for seven consecutive years. It is safe to say that the team will run away with the championship again this year. The Board of Education, Montclair Invitation and possibly the State Meet should find our boys on top, for under the able tutelage of their famous coach, Victor Salerno, and the able leadership of Captain Vincent Grasso, the boys are bound to come through. Page Sixty-eight THE ATHENAEUM JUNE 1934 MR. STEARNS Our brief acquaintance with him has left lasting marks of affection and inspiration. Page Sixty-nine THE ATHEN EUM JUNE 193 1 When the Spring comes back to Newark Bring happiness and glee There's a big gray school acalling. Elsie ani Saul Firtel Page Serent) THE ATHENAEUM JUNE 1934 CLASS HISTORY ZN September, n in teen-thirty, observers around Barringer noted the appear- ance of a new star in the heavens. Its course for two years, as befits a small star, attracted little attention, but as it rose in its orbit it increased in brilliance and assumed a place of prominence among the other heavenly bodies. Focusing their telescopes upon it, astronomers discovered that it was a little known orb, the class of June '34. Late in the year nineteen-thirty-two, under the efficient guidance of Mr. R. J. Hagaman, the faculty advisor, it assembled and chose Alice Hildebrand Vice-President; Ruth Groves, Secretary; and Don Cctrulo, Treasurer. Joseph Santangelo was chosen President, w hich act seems to have become a permanent institution for four terms. Muriel Waugh, Betty Schott, and Edward Gibbons occupied the three remaining positions in the 3A term. Joe, Muriel, and Betty continued to act in the same capacities all during the senior year, w ith David Hirschhorn assisting as treasurer. The efforts of the class during the 3A term culminated in a Spring dance, equalled in brilliance only by the IB Thanksgiving affair in the succeeding Fall. A reception, given in honor of the class of January 33, was likewise well accepted and followed by a characteristic success, the 4A Saint Patrick's Day dance.
