Qi 1 l a ln September, l933, a large and unusually intelligent class crossed the street from ,lunior High. and with heads held high in spite of quaking hearts. entered li. M. T. ll. S. Awed though we were by the sophistication and patronizing air of the upperclassmen. we zeal- ously entered into the activities of the school. During our first year our class was represented on both the bas- ketball and football teams, and many of our members were voted into the various clubs. We chose as our first president Alex lilairg vice- president, Douglas Cheaney: secretary, Mary T. Suttong and treasurer, Elaine Lambert. These officers performed their duties excellently and our class soon became known as an asset instead of the liability which all Freshman classes are supposed to be. At the dawn of our Sophomore year we assumed toward the in- coming Freshmen the superior attitude which we had so resented. John Ed Pike was elected president. Uur class loyally backed our con- testants in the Revue Contest and three of our members emerged vic- torious when the ballots were counted. Our Sophomore year passed rapidly and we soon found ourselves Jolly Juniors. This year brought to us added responsibilities but also added privileges. Again, Alex Blair was named president. We have been very busy selecting class rings and sweaters. Now the time has come for our junior-Senior, and the Senior-Junior parties and we are looking for- ward to next September when we shall return to B. M. T. H. S. as sophisticated Seniors. Edwards. Nineteen thirty-five seemed to be an unlucky year in Barret High foot- ball. Although the Purple Flash had a fighting and spirited squad of boys, they emerged from the season with a record of nine defeats and a scoreless tie. We first journeyed to Evansville where the strong Memorial team handed us our first loss 95 to 0. We next traveled to Bowling Green where we went down fighting by a score of 31 to 0. Our home season was opened with a defeat by the Tornado of Paducah 67 to 0. The second home game of the year was played with Clay and although we were unable to push over a score we outplayed the Clay team in every part of the game. The game ended in a scoreless tie. Playing again under the lights at home we were beaten by Madison- ville 20 to 0. We went to Sturgis the next week where we were figured to be beaten badly, but a brilliant ball game was played and although they won 20 to 0 the ball was kept in their territory most of the game. Hop'town visited us the next week and it was at their expense that we made our first score of the year, Stewart carrying the pigskin over in the second quarter. The game ended with the Tigers winning 26 to 6. Armistice Day found us journeying to Morganfield where the Cuerillas splashed over us in the mud and rain 45 to 0. We left home for the last time of the season when we went to Marion. We started the game off with a score early in the first quarter when Stewart crossed the goal. The lead was held for three quarters, but unable to halt a last quarter drive by the Terrors, we were beaten I3 to 6. Turkey Day and our old rivals from Owensboro came here. A bitter battle was waged with the Red Devils being victorious 33 to 0. Thus ended the nineteen,thirty-five football season for the Purple Flash and the high school grid careers of Stewart, Green, Hayes, McDonald, and Benton. Lp! About thirty boys reported daily for practice and although the boys were light, they were built into a fighting squad by Coach Crafton. The Juniors played two games with a much larger team from Sturgis. The home game ended in a 6-6 tie while the Sturgis team won on its own field 19-0. This early training in the fundamentals of football is designed to pro- duce players for the high school team. gf! Henderson .......... Henderson .......... Henderson ...... The first home game against Earlington was our first win. with a score 59 to 5. This game showed that the boys worked together well and that we were going to have a good team. We went to Memorial next and put up a fight against the Evansville team but lost 32 to 24. On their smaller fioor our team worked well but could not overcome the early Memorial lead. After that wc took Sacramento. Marion. Morganfield, and Owensboro. By this time all the boys were rounding into shape and were getting better. Next we beat Calhoun and Morganfield. and then took the highly praised Sturgis team. We played Memorial next on our fioor. We played one of our best defensive games but the impossibility of any of the boys to hit the basket caused our defeat 20 to 10. W'e went to Boonville and defeated them 29 to 25. Corydon came to Henderson ready to defeat us again but in an overtime game we turned the tables. The score was 23 to 21. We took the remaining five gullies of our schedule defeating Owensville, one of the leading teams in lndiana. We were ready for the district tournament and we drew Weaverton. We took them 52 to 27. Robards, county champs, were our next opponents. This was predicted to be a close game but we ran away with it 41 to 14. Corydon. in the finals. took us in an overtime 19 to 18. We went into the regional tournament as the runner ups of the eleventh district. We drew Onton and defeated them 46 to 24. Against Sturgis we proved the best by defeating them 38 to 26. In the finals we met Corydon again. Henderson displayed in this game its true ability. We took Corydon by ten points. 26 to 16. lt was then On to State. At State we won our first game from College High 40 to 24. making the most points that any team scored in one game in the tournament. ln our last game we played Corbin, who had a six foot, seven inch center that defeated us 27 to 17. Corbin won the State tournament this year. Our second team made a good record this year. lt fought hard in each game and showed the fans what kind of a team Henderson will have in the future. Coach Archie Riehl was largely responsible for this year's record. He had this year one of the best coached teams in the state. -Herbert Crafton. i . We have back this year, Wallace Southard, entered in the dashes and weight events, John Stewart in the dashes, hurdles, and weight events, Billy Benton in the hurdles and relays, Aaron Davis in the hurdles, jumps and pole vault, and Harry Walters entered in the dashes and jumps. At the beginning of the season almost forty boys reported to Coach lliehl. Out of the new men coming on., Brown, Cherman, Walker, Posey, Barnett, and Crafton are the most promising. Qthers will probably develop.
