The Barnstable Hrgh School Chronrcle In the days of long ago when knrghthood was rn flower many went rn search of the Holy Grarl T them rt was a goal a lrght at the end of the darkness And so we the class of 1959 have been strrvrng to reach our goal graduatron Our way lrke that of the knrghts was drffrcult wrth many obstacles to be con quered For years we had been the obedrent pages Upon enterrng hrgh school we would prepare ourselves for fr trme Then four years hence we would be the leaders As such we could then set our lamp rn the darkness for others to follow In September 1955 havrng crossed the moat of ele mentary school and scaled the wall of 1unror hrgh the drawbrrdge lowered to allow us the squrres to enter rnto the castle of knowledge where we were to spend our next four years trarnrng ourselves for knrghthood As pages we had only been permrtted to partrcrpate 1n band orchestra and the 59 Club but garnrng wrth our freshman year the trtle of squrre we were now allowed to choose our own courses and to partrcrpate rn Iunror Varsrty Sports Durrng the year we took our frrst Iowa Tests Our blg class project that year the Freshman Frolrc was a success under the gurdance of Mr Rodman T Small our class advrsor Freld hockey was added as a Varsrty Sport that year under the drrectron of Mrss Katherrne Nehubran our advrsor we held our class electrons George W1ll1ams was elected presrdent Gordon Nelson vrce presrdent Sally Holmes secretary and Brenda Atwood treasurer Iudy Askew and Crarg Hopkrns were elected to our Student Councrl Three of our classmates were selected for membershrp rn the Natronal Honor Socrety They were Brenda Atwood Barbara Barnard and Gordon Nelson That year the Chess Club was formed under the drrectron of Mr Vernon Coleman Our class dance was the Sophomore Hop at whrch Roger Gotts orchestra provrded the musrc Chosen krng was Crarg Hopkrns wrth Mary Lourse Savery rergnrng as queen rn the Alrce rn Wonderland theme Our yunror year was frlled wrth many great accomp hshments We started the year by movmg rnto the new school We recerved our class rrngs srgnrfyrng that knrghthood was now wrthrn our reach Wrth Mr Wrllram F Naylor as our class advrsor we elected Leonard Duchesney presrdent Crarg Hopkrns vrce presrdent Sally Holmes secretrry and udy Barrows treasurer udy Askew Leonard Duchesney and Peter Lrrkrn were chosen to repre sent our class rn the Student Councrl Durrng that year Nlrss Amelra Leconte organrzed the French Club The Dramatrc Club was also formed Judy Askew Brenda Atwood Barbara Barnard Sallv Holmes Sandra Hrrsch Maureen Lrnehan Nlarlorre Montgomery Nancy Strles and Lrnda Wolsreffer garn ed charter membershrp rn the newly organrzed Code Club whrch had Nlrss Ioyce Haggerty as rts advrsor Iudy Askew and Lrnda Wolsreffer were named Key Club Sweethearts Marlorre Montgomery Nlrrja Perkko and Susan Stern were named for electron to the Natronal Honor Socrety That year we sent Barbara Barnard as our representatrve to Grrls State and Gordon Nelson and Charles Converse to Boys State The brggest undertakrng of the year was of course the Iunror Prom wrth japanese Sprrngtrme as rts theme Lrnda WVolsreffer was chosen queen wrth Brenda Atwood Rosalre DeGrace Patrrcra Loveyoy and Susan Stern as her court Roger Gotts orchestra provrded musrc for dancrng The money rarsrng projects for that year were the sale of fudge and the Hyannrs and Ostervrlle cake sales We also held the Berry Bop Frnally rn September 1958 we reached the prnnacle rn our vears of trarnrng soon we would become knrghts Mr Naylor agarn became our class advrsor as we elected Stephen Lahteme presrdent Peter Strrnger vrce presrdent Sally Holmes secretary and Nancy Strles treasurer Iudy Askew was voted presr dent of the Student Councrl wrth Leonard Duchesney Peter Larkrn and George Wrllrams as senror repre sentatrves ot the COUHCII New senror Code Club members were Iay Braxton Katherrne Nese Mrrja Perkko and Susan Stern The Varsrty Club was formed under the drrectron of Mr YV Leo Shrelds The senror class play Bull ln a Chrna Shop was presented under the drrectron of Ellrott MacSwan Mrss Katherrne Nehubran drrected the Senror Varrety Show Other proyects were the sellrng of ads for the football programs the concessron commrttee at the football and varsrty basketball games the magazrne campargn under Nfirss M Lourse Hayden and also the presentatron of Platter Party over radro statron YVOCB Under the drrectron of Mrs Catherrne D Towey and wrth ard of rts two co edrtors Marlorre Mont gomery and Lrnda Wolsreffer the Barnacle was brought to prrnt Lourse Whrteley was elected to represent our school rn Student Government Day rn Boston and udy Askew recerwed the DA B Good Crtrzenshrp Award Our trarnrng has been long and hard but now we are ready as knrglrts to charnpron our rde rls rs we face the world wrth fresh hope and determrnatron Arlene Frazrer Lourse Whrteley 0 I '7 7 7 A , . o r , , - - I . 7 7 . . . .
