that team The baseball team also brought to Barnstable Htgh the Upper Cape Chtmpron shrp It was the hrst nme that the agrrcultural department drd forestry work Barnstable Hrgh recexved the prxvllege of workmg on state for est land tn Centervtlle Many notables attended the dedtcatlon exercises held rn june The traffrc squad was revrved durmg thus out standing year Loutse McDonough Mary Lewrs oan Prada Robert Anderson Marrlyn Iacob son and Sally Drxon were members of the traffrc team The first track meet held m many years was run Barnstable prled up 47 pornts to Yar mouths 25 Paul Thomas not only was named Shtps Buoy by the Clnpper but won a trophy for berng the most valuable football player rn the dlstrlct That was qurte an honor for a mnth grader Mr Norman Levmson advised our 51 Club We elected Kathleen Sullrvan President Ioan Prada V1cePres1dent Ann McLean Secretary and udy Hrggms Treasurer We sponsored .1 faculty tea tn November a Chrrstmas dance tn December and took a trrp for ourselves M George transported us to a Provrncetown game Paul McManus and Dorothy Whlteley were our representatlves on the umor Red Cross The school year 19501951 brought us the prrvrlege of electrng class offrcers We had reached our long destred goal' Under the letd ershrp of Mr Bertram Srnger we named ohn Alberghml President Kathleen Sulllvan Vtce Presxdent Sally Dtxon Secretary and Ann Mc Lean Treasurer Anne Slavm and Sally Greene became our Student Council representatrves Newcomers to our class were Carol Anderson Rosemary Harmon Arnold Rovner and Ernest Rohdenburg Wrtla the help of the entrre class the tradltlonal Sophomore Hop was held m February at whtch event Ann McLean md Thomas Hadley were named ueen and King of Hearts Ann also was named Shlps Belle by the Clrpper whrch was manned by Deborah Howes and Brooks Kelley Thomas Hadley was made the manager of the football team a posrtron he held for the next three years Brooks Kelley s label destgn for Cape Lod beach plum yelley won first prtze nn a contest He also drew cartoons for the Cape Cod Stan d ard Trmes Barnstable was not rdle tn sports during thrs year for Mr Charles Howes baseball team won the Cape Champronshrp The Boosters Club which was to later back 1 wtnnmg football team was organized by Interested townspeople It was a dehmte help to both plavers and spec tttors Intramural hockey was played by wrnners Mary Sylvta Loulse McDonough Sally Drxon md Anne Slavm They were grven the prlvtlege of playmg two games with Harwlch Htgh School Mrss Nehublan s gurls won the Upper League Basketball Champtonshrp Dorothy Stddall became secretary of the band 1 posttron held by her for three years 1931 1957' For the hrst trme ln 44 years Btrnstable produced an undefeated football squtd Thus was our umor year top eyent for many of our class members helped to brrng home this cherlshed honor Under the guxdance of Mr Arnold Smith we selected john Alberghtnn Presldent Bob Behlman V1cePres1dent Sally Dnxon Secre tary and Ann McLean Treasurer Our hrst class project of the year wrs the purchase of class rrngs Here agaln we proved pioneers for Brooks Kelley designed a new school rrng which has smce been adopted as the standard school ring Incident tlly Brooks tlso won 1 S50 hrst prue tn 1 covcr contest for thc Brrnstable Town Rcport Judy Lrgergren won fourth prrze rn the srme contest Durmg thus same year Gael Cam pmt w IS electcd to the Student Councrl , 7 2 ' . . 4 ' . 4 . , V ' V - . OUR MEMORABLE EVENTS AT BARNSTABLE HIGH UR llfe at Barnstable High School actually began xn the seventh grade We remember that the New England Mustc Fesnval which was held ln South Portland Marne drew four teen Barnstable students The Gondollers was presented by the school IH April with Mr Wlg gm as the director and Mlss Barton dlrector of music The boys glee club made their first ap pearance at a Christmas concert There was 1 successful drtve for new band uniforms during that school year Good Government Day wxs first established whlle we were seventh graders Several faculty changes affected us Mr Harvard Broadbent our guidance dnrector be came Director of Instructlon Guxdance and Testing for the schools of the Town of Barn stable Miss Grffels who led many of us rn the field of art during later years was appornted art instructor Mr Luther Howes replaced Mr Arnold Rogean as basketball coach Very few actlvrtres were open to us at this time but surprisingly we entered into the school hfe easrly Sheldon Segerman ind Mmlyn Jacobson worked on the Clipper Most of the Athletic Assoclatlon members were seventh and elghth graders Thls was also true of the unlor Red Cross An outstanding example of kindness and enthusiasm was the janet Brock Fund Drlve sponsored and carried out ent1rely by our 7C dlvlsron Vfe were old hands when we returned ln the fall of 1948 to enter the elghth grade There were many new faculty faces for us to meet namely Mr Naylor Mr Esposlto Miss Gath Mr Gesln Miss Wrlght Mlss Sears Miss Dacey Mr Fratus and Mr Stnger ln the sports field we saw BHS wrn the Cape Cod Basketball Champronshnp and the golf and track teams reorgamzed jay OBrien was on the track squad Although 1948 1949 were great sports years ironically Barnstable High had but one three letter man Semor David Flsh' The Clipper used six of our members Shnr ley Andersen R1ta Bray Cynthia Mackie Bar bara Madden Sheldon Segerman and Anne Slavln This magazine received a first place ranng at a Columbia Scholastic Press Assoc: anon contest The Clrpper also gave Robert Behlman the dnstmctron of being Ship s Buoy Three of our class members jean McElhaney Gael Campana and Betsey Hall won magazine campaign awards Trial By Jury was presented rn April and twelve students attended the New England Musrc Festival in Wellesley But most memorable to us was the formation of the 53 Club It was our own rdea based upon our seventh grade Gutdance Club We strove to help others and to help ourselves This new club collected 3125 for the March of Dimes sponsored a dance and earned over 350 for a Mxlk Fund These eighth grade act1v1t1es were led by President Dorothy Whrteley Vice- President Wtllxam Arthur Secretary Shnrley Holmes and Treasurer Kathleen Sullivan Mr Arnold Smith who advtsed us ln our beginning school adventure was later to lead us tn our final endeavors Full fledged Freshmen we were rn September of 1949' Barnstable High School had many first places during thrs school year Josephine Daniels was not only Governor of Girls State but President of Girls Nation Her picture ap peared ln Tlme magazine shaking hands wrth President Truman The Barnstable agricultural boys won the cattle judgxng award for Barnstable County at the Brockton Farr The Clnpper was again awarded a first place ranng rn the nationwide contest for school magazmes Pat Richards was a member of the staff at this time The girls basketball team won the Cape Championship Dorothy Whxteley plated with W 1 ' ' ' . v - s 1 , ' v , , - 4 . .. . .. - - . . . . . .
