The Senior Class THE HISTORY OF BARNEVELD PUBLIC SCHOOLS Although many of us didn't realize it, our school has had a long and interesting history, a history of growth, change, and expansion. In 1883 the villagers constructed a one room schoolhouse—Bameveld's first hall of learning. It was replaced in 1900 by a building which served the community for fifty-three years. Former students remember it as a two-story brick, four room structure where they passed many pleasant (?) hours eager- ly (??) pursing their search for knowledge (???). Originating as a state graded school with less than thirty students, Bameveld Schools now include kindergarten through senior high school and have 445 students enrolled. In 1906, during the term of the first school board which was composed of C. Theobald, B. Jones, and Leslie Roach, district residents voted to construct an addition to the building and expand the high school into a four-year course. The year 1922 marked the construction of primary and intermediate grade rooms and the first gym. When the WPA came into existence, a committee composed of Mr. Watson, Anton Ameson, and Fred Starry asked citizens of the community to help build a new gymnasium. Under this same plan the gym was painted and ceil- ed, and showers were added to the dressing rooms in 1936. In 1953, there was definite need for a new scnool building. At the annual meeting June 28, 1954 the voters accepted Gauswitz and Cashin's building plan which consisted of two remodeled classrooms, a new entrance, eight new classrooms, restroom and shower facilities, and offices at an approximate cost of $75, 000. The dedication ceremony was held in the gymnasium October 28, 1955. Thus in 1955 a group of ten eager little first graders entered a new school to begin their education. Board members at the time were G. A. Watson, Milford Campbell and Velma Schurch for the Union Free High School, and Otto Oimoen, Kermit Carden, and Anton Ameson Jr. for Joint District 15. Floyd Smith was principal. In 1959 Jemieton School joined District 15, and in 1962--we were in eighth grade now—another four room addition with restrooms was added at a cost of $80, 000. Five acres of land was purchased from Mr. Lanpop at a cost of $5, 000. At this time, a new district including Bameveld Union Free High School, Joint District 15, Middlebury, Larsonville, Fairview, Barber, Walnut Hollow, Clay Hill, and Meadow Grove schools was formed. This district was called Joint District 15. Also about this time the school received a gift of $82, 788. 26 from the Sadie Evans Estate. This gift was greatly appreciated and was used to pay off the grade school debt. In 1964 as we entered our sophomore year of high school, we were again greeted by the sounds of hammers and saws. A $252, 000 addition was being constructed which included a new kitchen, new gymnasium, home economics room, three classrooms, showers, and restrooms. The dedication ceremony was held February 7, 1965. The new school board's members were Tom Hodgson, Ralph Paulson, Sylvia Thoni, Jerry Williams, and Reuben Gilbertson. Lester V. Sutton was the adminstrator. We were confident, self-assured seniors, accustomed to the sounds of workmen and power-tools in 1966 when a remodeling program was started which includes a new art room, music room, dining area, three new class- rooms, office area, and additional lockers at a cost of approximately $100, 000. Mr. John T. Benson is the present administrator. This project was completed in 1967. The ten excited little first graders who entered a new school in 1955 are now twenty-three mature, wise (?—we hope!), young adults graduating from a still expanding Bameveld High School as the class of '67. 2 IN MEMORIAM On the opposite page is told the story of Bameveld Public Schools. An integral part of that story was Mrs. Nellie Owens, who taught in the System for over forty years. Mrs. Owens patterned the lives of the people of this Community more than anyone ever realized. She had begun to teach second and third generation students, and parents felt secure in the knowledge that their child would begin school under Mrs. Owens. Mrs. Nellie Owens is no longer with us, but her devotion and her work will live long after the memory of her fades. During the summer of our Junior and Senior year, we were saddened by the loss of a mem- ber of the graduating class of '65, Linda Squires. Her lively personality and warm smile will be sorrowfully missed. 3 FACULTY MR. BENSON ADMINISTRATOR Luther College, B.A. Winona State College, M. S. MR. WALLSCHLAEGER PRINCIPAL Oshkosh State U. CLASS HISTORY FRESHMEN: In August, 1963, 24 green, curious freshmen ventured through the corridors of Bameveld High School for the first time. After a wild but memorable initiation, we settled down to work under the guidance of Mr. Nelson and Mr. Sutton, with graduation in 1967 as our goal. Class officers for our first year were: Sandy Ameson, President; Shirley Forbes, Vice-President; Anita Roberts, Secretary; and Bob Watson, Treasurer. Our Fair Representative was Judy Richard and her escort was Jim Duffy. Bob Watson represented the class at Homecoming with his date Sandy Ameson. Our class enrollment was decreas- ed to 20 with the loss of Diane Burkhalter, Steve Suchomel, Ray Callahan and Duane Buckingham. SOPHOMORES: What do you know. We made it through the first trying year and eargerly anticipated our second. We hoped to accomplish this feat under the able guidance of Mr. Nelson and Mrs. Grooms. Class leaders included: Evenlyn Stenseth, President; Jeff Johnsrud, Vice-President; John Swenson, Secretary; and Larry Schaller, Treasurer. Our Fair Representative was Anita Roberts and her escort was Dennis Oimoen. John Swenson was chosen as our Homecoming Representative and his date Sandy Arenson. There were no additions or depletions in our class number. JUNIORS: As upperclassmen, our two remaining years might even be a pleasure. Mr. Nelson and Mrs. Grooms were again our class advisors. Elected officers were: President, Bob Watson; Vice-President, Dennis Oimoen; Sec- retary, Judy Richard, Treasurer, Dennis Bums. Shirley Forbes, escorted by Dennis Oimoen, was our Fair Rep- resentative. Anita Roberts, Evelyn Stenseth and Bob Handel were our Student Council Representatives. Larry Oimoen ably represented us on the Homecoming Court and his date for the evening was Janeen Peterson. King Larry Schaller and Queen Carol Johnson reigned over our Prom with Camelot as its theme. Our Junior Class play, entitled Nuts to You was, if nothing else, fun to put on. We were sorry to see Shirley Forbes and Shirley Fortman leave us but we were joined by Dennis Bums, Darlene Anderson and Tim Hook. SENIORS: Three of the best years of our life, or so we're told, are gone and we have one left to muster through. Class advisors this year were Mrs. Mullen, Mrs. Lewis and Mrs. Roller. Class officers were: Bob Handel, President; Larry Schaller, Vice-President; Phyllis Fortman, Secretary; and Sandy Ameson, Treasurer. On Fair Day Phyllis Fortman reigned over her Court. Her date was Larry Oimoen. Judy Richard represented our class on the Court and her date was Bob Watson. Dennis Bums reigned as our Homecoming King and Dennis Oimoen was our class representative. Bob Handel was the Senior member of the Junior Prom. Tim Hook, Gail Hill and Larry Oimoen were Student Council members. As our school days at B.H. S. come to a close, we look back on them with joy, pride and sometimes sadness. We then hereby declare this the official history of the class of 1967. 15 THE SPY We were lucky to obtain this top secret information from the note book of—The Spy. ERDMAN “AND GLADLY WOLDE HE LERNE, AND GLADLY TECHE” CHAUCER In 1963, when we entered Bameveld High as Freshmen, Mr. Erdman came here as a history and social studies teacher. His classes were profitable, but also fun; and Mr. Erdman became our friend as well as our teacher. This year, as Seniors, we have had the guidance of Mr. Erdman in planning and producing our annual. We are speaking for the Seniors and the entire student body when we say thanks, not only for his help with the annual, but for the guidance and patience he has always willingly given us. With their excellent team work and exceptional coaching staff, the Golden Eagles easily captured the conference title in the Kicka- poo league. Good sportsmanship and fair play were the rules in every game and for this we can also be very proud. The school has 25 boys out for the team. The team has a 14 match schedule. The team is relatively young but will have much experience after this year. With the possibilities of experience, the Bameveld wrestling team hopes to gain momentum in the future. It is an exciting and valuable sport and all boys who participate in it will be able to look back on their high school days with pride. Our motto is: Team Unity first with an individual pride.
