We were going on a small trip, beginning in September, 19 9, and were headed for the Future in May, 19?3 There were many stops along the way to enlighten our trip. On our first few stops, we could see the graduates of '53 as twenty-six green and eager Freshmen traveling along, under the leader- ship of Mr. Strand, through their first year at B. U. F. H. S. On October 4-, they were initiated and survived without any casualties, so they became full-pledged high school students. In December they treat- ed the rest of the students at a Christmas Party. When promoted to the second coach, their next set of stops was during the Sophomore year. Mr. McCloskey was the conductor that year. The students were pretty well acquainted by then so it was a year filled with academic achievements along with many extra-curricular activities. In November, they planned a Halloween Party for the student body. Before the year was up five classmates were lost, namely: Vernon Christenson, Charles Ryman, Irene Week, Ralph Peterson, and Harold Cushman. Every set of stops seemed to multiply. This time there were quite a few because the Junior year was a busy one. Only sixteen members returned (a loss of five more: Abigail Sawle, Delores Rolstad, Leone Retrum, Jane Klusendorf, and Kay Rowan). Mrs. Monnier sat in the conductor's seat while in the third coach. October was the month in which they got revenge. It was initiation time. They thought they were pretty easy on the Freshmen, but the Freshmen didn't think so. November I'+j they were really upperclassmen. Their class rings arrived and they were the envy of everyone. On Feb- ruary 1, the Junior Class Play, Return To Bedlam , was presented. Another student, Carole Boe, Joined the class in Marcn to make a total of seventeen members. April +, the Junior Prom, the highlight of the year, was undertaken. The music was by Eddy Lawrence and the theme was Deep Purple . Ethel Owens and Dan Williams were the Royal Couple. Nearing the end of our trip, we just stopped a couple more times before our happy, successful trip was ended. Our conductor that year was Mr. Smith. Senior Class pictures were taken on September 11. February 6 brought the Homecoming Dance, with music by Dan Garson, following a victory ,over Hollandale. The queen and king were Margie Grimstad and Bill Myers. We also had the annual and our Senior Class Play to fill up our spare moments. The month of May was a busy one: Baccalaureate, May 24-; Class Night, May 26; and Commencement Exercises, May 28. We were once again in the train terminal as we completed the trip and everyone went his own way out into the big city of the Future . On February 6, the Barneveld High School Gymnasium was crowded with spectators who witnessed victory of our A and B teams over Hollandale. Shirley Ash, a cheerleader, introduced the queen, and her court. The queen was crowned with a band of white roses by Arlene Larson. a Donna Myers and Donnie Paulson were crown bearers. Queen Margie Grimstad and King Billy Myers led the Grand March at 11:00. The court of honor followed with their escorts who were: Carole Jean Burreson and Blaine Bunbury, Lucille Peterson and Tom Frame, Norene Reuter and Leo Clerkin, Monica Ryan and Pat McSherry. Dan Garson furnished the music for the evening. This successful event was sponsored by the Senior Class. A couple of late passengers clambered aboard the train Destination Future and we were on our way. I had taken the last empty seat without paying any attention to anyone; I began to read my newspaper. An article struck my eye I Leo Clerkin, the Texas Millionaire, buys another ranch to add to his col- lection. I realized I had been reading out loud when the man across the .. aisle, caught my attention and said that he had graduated with the class Leo was in. And much to my surprise it was Dan Williams. He said he was coach at Barneveld High School and he was just on his way to look over the Rose Bowl prospects for his team. We exchanged news and soon both of us knew what the Class of 1953 was doing. Rush Watson is a millionaire. When he isn't busy running the Capital Theater, which he owns, he is in his mansion. Elroy Miller is living at Mazomarde, so if you ever drive through Mazo, stop at Miller' s Garage. Dave Arnold is a sailor boy but he spends most of his leaves at Dodgeville instead of Barneveld. Howard Theobald runs his father's farm and is married to a young girl from Hollandale. Blaine Bunbury has his own meat market Bunbury's Fine Meats. He can't decide where he wants to spend his nights. v. ers still rims the filling station and is raising boys so he will have help later on. 3- He says he is going to All his earnings are Gary Massey is running his dad's farm, have a cook one of these days. Vernon Frame is a doctor in Barneveld. saved to build a new hospital. I guess that takes care of the boys. Now let's see if we can inciso. g Were S° We’n be able to see what they a e do- Marie Brattlie, oh yes, she still manages to get to all those Hollandale dances even though she works at the Farmer' s Mutual Insur- ance Company in Madison. Charlotte Frame finished secretarial school and is married to her boss, owner of Max Factor Make-Up Corporation. Carole Burreson is on the Arthur Murray Staff. Arthur Murray thought that she was such a fine dancer that he retired and let Carole take over the business. Ethel Owens is a dietitian at the Madison General Hospital. She still has steady visitors from Arena. Mary Grimstad was a model at Manchester' s but just a few days ago won the modeling contest and will now appear on the cover of The Country Wife magazine. Margie Grimstad is married to a filling station operator and lives in a big white house in Barneveld. Carole Boe is the head nurse at the Frame Hospital. Her biggest problem now is to help Doc Frame draw the plans for the new hospital. Our train was due to reach its destination very soon, so this concluded our visit about the Senior Class of 1953 jt unior 6 ROW ONE: Mrs. Punzel, Billy Brennan, Helen Zepplin, Ronnie Bunbury, Shirley Ash, Dale Olson, Mary Enloe, Tom Clerkin, Allen Henry, Mary Ann Ryan, Fred Segebrecht. As we returned to Barneveld High on September 5,1952, we found that our class enrollment was down to twenty-nine. We lost Tom Watkins to Beaver Dam, Alan Hixson to Monroe, Evelyn Meili to Dodgeville, and Ethel Erickson is at home; while Mary Enloe came from Mt. Horeb and Allen Henry from Dodgeville . The Juniors were very active in extra-curricular activities as well as academic achievements. We had eight boys on the football squad, seven boys on the basketball team and a total of seven Letter Men in our midst. Six junior girls were cheerleaders and we had many students in the band and chorus and on the newspaper staff. Lucille Peterson was chosen to represent our class on the court of honor for Homecoming this year. One of the highlights this year was the initiating of those be- loved freshmen. We all had a lot of fun and believe it or not, although they had a pretty rough time, they all pulled through. Next came our class play Glamor Boy which was a big success. Then that long waited day arrived when we received our class rings. Our last and greatest highlight came on April 2b, when we presented our prom with music by Monty Hacker and his orchestra. For our class officers we elected: Bill Brennan, President; Reginald Brattlie, Vice President; Mary Ann Ryan, Secretary; Douglas Carden, Treasurer; Tom Clerkin, Student Council; Margreth Hosking, Class Reporter; and Mrs, Punzel, our class advisor: Next year we will be back for our last and final round of ambition at Barneveld Union Free High School. 10 ROW ONE: Mr. Butteris, Phillip Schaller, Walter Evans, Ray Bunbury, Jean Ranney, Ronald Gilbertson, Phil Erickson, Donna Varcoe, Dick Dodge. We returned to Barneveld High School on September 2, 1952, as Sophomores. Our class had grown a little since last year. We were still one of the smallest classes in school with seventeen members. The new members, since school started in 1951, were Donna Varcoe, Norene Reuter, and Dick Dodge. There were only two boys on the football team this year: Phil Erickson and Elden Cushman. Phil Erickson could not finish all this season, as he had the misfortune of breaking one of his ribs. There were five boys on the basketball team: Phil Erickson, Dick Dodge, Pat McSherry, Elden Cushman, and Phillip Schaller. We also had numerous students in band and chorus. We elected our class officers this year as follows: President : Vice President : Secretary : Treasurer : Student Council : Class Reporter : Advisor : Norene Reuter was elected court of honor for Homecoming. On September 2-, 1952, thirty bothered Freshmen walked up the stairs of Barneveld High School. Of course a few of us had some difficulty in finding the right classrooms. We all waited in dread for the day we would come full fledged freshmen. The girls wore men's overalls and shirts, pigtails and men's shoes. The boys had to wear dresses and high heels and women's' hats. We had many out for athletics, chorus, and band. Th6 weather was ideal and a large crowd attended. The first event of the day was judging the exhibits. This event took most of the morning because of the numerous entries. At noon a parade of beautifully decorated floats, exhibits, and bands attracted a large group of spectators. The Junior Class won lirst place with their Conservation float and the Barneveld Grades won first placing in the School Days division. The tractor driving contest was held next with Ronald Gilbertson taking first place. At 2:00, the big event of the afternoon, the football game took place with Highland emerging as the victors by a score of 33-0. A dance was held in the evening at the gym with music by Bob Gest. The fair queen, Norita Eveland, was crowned by the Advancement Association Pres- ident, Rev. Monard Sanford. She chose Dan Williams to reign as her king. The court of honor included: Jean Ranney, Margreth Hosking, Carol Boe, Audrey Owens, and Helen Zepplin. Everyone involved felt the fair to be well worth the time and effort and all are looking forward to next year's gala event. 20 Senior (Constitution We, the class of 1953 in order to form a more perfect school, to Insure good behavior, and to set a good example for our underclassmen, do hereby establish this constitution to the Barneveld Union Free High School.
