CLASS HISTORY On a bright morning in September, 1946, twelve bright, green. Freshmen enrolled at Barneveld High School under the leadership of Mr. Kirkpatrick. We were namely: Jane Donahue, Lois Schaller, Barry Watkins, Glen Ryman, Joyce Owens, and Leland Haglund, from the Barneveld grades; Beth Meili, Vernon Kelly, Marilyn Schaller, Ann Rothwell, and Betty Zander from rural schools. Helen Brennan came from Madison to join our class. After we were formally initiated by the Juniors we were full-fledged members and generally accepted by the student body. As the school year wore on we had many more of our rough corners smoothed off. Our Sophomore year began with one less member than the previous year as Betty Zander left school to become Mrs. Yapp. However, we gained an additional twelve students, namely: David Opsal, Joe Ryan, Anita Oimoen, Sylvia Duerst, Helen Burns, and Thyra Christianson from Mt. Horeb, Mary McHatton, Genoa City, Jannette Sawle and Caroline Russell, Arena, Marlene Clemo, Lone Rock, Dick Longseth, Spring Green and Wilma Marty, Hollandale. This enlarged our enrollment to twenty-three which gave us more prestige--we were beginning to be able to assert ourselves as a class. As the months rolled by we lost three students. Ann Roth- well transferred to Ridgeway, and Dick Longseth to Highland. Leland Haglund left school to work and is now employed by the Northwestern Railroad Co. in Madison. The Junior year of school is the highlight of one's high school life. The varied activities of that year make it so--there is first the selection of class rings, initiation, our first class play, and the main highlight of the year, the Junior Prom. We began that year with no new members. Thyra Christianson started her Junior year at Du Pont, Washington, but joined our class in October. Caroline Russell transferred to Middleton High School. Mary McHatton graduated with the class of 1949. In our final year as Seniors we gained two new students; Delbert Schaller, from Madison, and Faythe Swacina, from Verona; making our enrollment nineteen. Thyra Christianson did not return to school but in October became Mrs. Francis Clauer and now resides at Mineral Point. As our Senior year comes to a close we realize that all our close school ties will be severed as each one travels his way upon the highway of life. But let us never forget Barneveld High which has given us so much for that journey. 13
