Freshmen enrolled at Barneveld High School under the leadership of Mr. Kirkpatrick. We were namely: Jane Donahue, Lois Schaller, Barry Watkins, Glen Ryman, Joyce Owens, and Leland Haglund, from the Barneveld grades; Beth Meili, Vernon Kelly, Marilyn Schaller, Ann Rothwell, and Betty Zander from rural schools. Helen Brennan came from Madison to join our class. After we were formally initiated by the Juniors we were full-fledged members and generally accepted by the student body. As the school year wore on we had many more of our rough corners smoothed off. Our Sophomore year began with one less member than the previous year as Betty Zander left school to become Mrs. Yapp. However, we gained an additional twelve students, namely: David Opsal, Joe Ryan, Anita Oimoen, Sylvia Duerst, Helen Burns, and Thyra Christianson from Mt. Horeb, Mary McHatton, Genoa City, Jannette Sawle and Caroline Russell, Arena, Marlene Clemo, Lone Rock, Dick Longseth, Spring Green and Wilma Marty, Hollandale. This enlarged our enrollment to twenty-three which gave us more prestige--we were beginning to be able to assert ourselves as a class. As the months rolled by we lost three students. Ann Roth- well transferred to Ridgeway, and Dick Longseth to Highland. Leland Haglund left school to work and is now employed by the Northwestern Railroad Co. in Madison. The Junior year of school is the highlight of one's high school life. The varied activities of that year make it so--there is first the selection of class rings, initiation, our first class play, and the main highlight of the year, the Junior Prom. We began that year with no new members. Thyra Christianson started her Junior year at Du Pont, Washington, but joined our class in October. Caroline Russell transferred to Middleton High School. Mary McHatton graduated with the class of 1949. In our final year as Seniors we gained two new students; Delbert Schaller, from Madison, and Faythe Swacina, from Verona; making our enrollment nineteen. Thyra Christianson did not return to school but in October became Mrs. Francis Clauer and now resides at Mineral Point. As our Senior year comes to a close we realize that all our close school ties will be severed as each one travels his way upon the highway of life. But let us never forget Barneveld High which has given us so much for that journey. 13 We, the Senior class of “50 ', Barneveld High School, in the county of Iowa and the State of Wisconsin, being of sound mind and memory and after many long years of studying, do make this our last will and testament. ITEM 1- We will our advisor, Mrs. McHatton to any class that thinks they deserve the best. ITEM 2 - We will and bequeath our good reputation and ability to get along together to the Freshman class. ITEM 3 - We will our bright and shiny faces to the Sophomore class. ITEM 4 - We will to the Juniors the empty seats that we have so sadly left behind us. Helen Brennan wills her ability to catch a man to anyone who is badly in need of one. Helen Burns wills her black hair to Charlotte Frame. Marlene Clemo wills her athletic ability to Kay Rowan. Jane Donahue wills her towering height to Jane Klusendorf. Sylvia Duerst wills her ability to chew gum to Delores Snodgrass. Vernon Kelly wills his ability to sing to Frank Short, if Frank promises to serenade the girls. Wilma Marty wills her Mineral Point man to anyone who will save him for her. Beth Meili wills those Hollandale dances to Carol Eveland. Anita Oimoen wills all of her seriousness to Eugene Gilbertson. Joyce Owens wills her scholastic ability to her sister Eileen if she promises to take good care of it. Joe Ryan wills the use of the Chevrolet to Vincent if he promises not to put a dent in it. Glen Ryman wills his position as editor of the Annual to Eliza- beth Dimpfl. Delbert Schaller wills his wavy hair to Allen Christenson. Lois Schaller wills her saxaphone ability to Marlene Blaser. Marilyn Schaller wills all of those old time waltzes to Betty Anderegg. Faythe Swacina wills all her evenings at the Blue Mounds drug- store to Dorothy Marty. Barry Watkins wills his great musical skill to play the trombone to anyone who will accept it. David Opsal wills his height to the Freshmen boys. THANKS TO THE ADVERTISERS We suggest to the readers of Hi-Lights that they patronize these business firms-they helped us, let’s us help them. Thanks to Obma Studio and Gilbert Nordby for taking the pictures made in this book. The Senior Class of 1950 14 CLASS PROPHECY Glancing into the crystal ball we see it is the year I960. Members of the Senior Class of 1950 can be seen as they go about their activities. Helen Brennan is farming down in Walnut Hollow. Helen Burns is a nurse in Dodgeville so she can be close to Mineral Point. Marlene Clemo is the publicity manager of Roy Roger's horse, Trigger. Jane Donahue is farming down by Arena. She and her husband, Jimmy say a home wouldn't be a home without the patter of little feet—they have two dogs. Sylvia Duerst is a manager of a school for future book- keepers. Vernon Kelly is a singing cowboy and still has a grudge against cows. Wilma Marty is a cheesemaker's wife and likes it ex- cept the part of getting up and turning the cheese. Beth Meili is keeping house and has invented a new soap for washing grease out of overalls (mechanic's overalls). Anita Oimoen is keeping house on the Watkins farm. So far her husband has had to buy two new cars to keep her happy. David Opsal has a string of taverns from Blue Mounds to Denver. He has made so much money that the government is asking him to help pay the national debt. Joyce Owens is a concert pianist touring Navy camps and feed mills. Joe Ryan is a pro-football star making $100,000 dollars a year--he is known as the only man to go to college with an A average. Glen Ryman is president of the Last National Bank in India. He has a harem over there also. Delbert Schaller is the principal of a school in northern Wisconsin. Lois Schaller is working in Madison and still looking for a good-looking man. Marilyn Schaller hasn't made up her mind as to whether it is going to be Bill or Vernon. Faythe Swacina has a partnership in a drug store chain in New York and Chicago. Barry Watkins is farming and still going to dances at Turner Hall. BARNEVELD HOMECOMING The Homecoming was held January 20th, with Barneveld playing Ridgeway where the opponents won in a thrilling game. Everyone felt bad about the game but they made up for it at the dance that followed. The Royal Ceremonies got under way at eleven o'clock p.m. The Queen and the court were then introduced. The King, Vernon Kelly, selected Eva Nell Goke as alumni queen and the Queen, Marilyn Schaller, selected Rush Watson as alumni King. The alumni queen was presented with a corsage of white carnations. Carol Williams, the former queen, then crowned Queen Marilyn with a wreath of yellow roses. The Grand March was led by Queen Marilyn and King Vernon, followed by Jane Donahue, Ida Wegmueller, Betty Anderegg, Irene Week, and their escorts. The music was furnished by Hal Mack and orchestra. 15 FIRST ROW: Mrs. Brown (advisor), Judy Watson, Helen Dennis, Carol Eveland. JUNIOR HISTORY Most of us can still recall the day in the fall of 1947 that we reluctantly wended our way for the first time up the stairs in good old Barneveld High. We were all well cared for and protected under the guiding hand of Mr. 0 Neill. As the year passed we gradually forgot all the difficulties that were ours at the beginning of our high school training. As the summer rolled along we soon found it time to enter school again. This year there were twenty-six of us. 1950--that exciting year--just think, we are Juniors. Our first thrill was the privilege of initiating our fellow Freshmen. Then came the thrill of selecting a class ring the anticipation of the Junior Prom and class play. As we end this year we look forward with eager anticipation to that year of 1951 when we will become Seniors! 17 FIRST ROW: Raymond Duerst, Dennis Duerst, Viletta Arneson, Betty Anderegg, Gerry Watson, Carol Friedli, Ellen Garfoot, Mr. Griffiths (advisor). Soon after school began we had our election of officers which included the following: President Jim Leary, Vice-President Gerry Watson, Treasurer Viletta Arneson. Later in the fall we were initiated. This year we had an enrollment of fifteen when school began, but Robert Tollison moved to Barneveld from Mazo, to make our present call membership sixteen. Our class officers this year are as follows: President Gerry Watson, Vice-President LaVerne Brunker, Secretary Carol Friedli, Treasurer Betty Anderegg, and Class Reporter Jim Leary. Our two rehearsals each week were lots of fun and we were able to furnish music for the Armistice Day and Christmas Programs as well as put on a Spring Concert and participate in the District Music Festival at Mineral Point on April 22nd. Several Members participated also as soloists or in instrumental ensemble groups. 29 FORENSICS FIRST ROW: Mrs. Me Hatton (Director), Judy Watson, Marlene Blaser, Dorothy Evans, Jane Donahue, Carol Friedli, Betty Ash, Betty Andcrcgg, Viletta Arneson. Courage is a quality that a student possesses when he expresses a desire to take part in such activity. The rewards of speech work are not measured by the honors or trophies won. These are material awards but the real worth are the attributes, such as--poise, self confidence ect., that the student takes with him along the highway of life. BARNEVELD FUTURE FARMERS OF AMERICA ORGANIZATION Barneveld FFA chapter was organized in the fall of 1947 as a new Chapter with 32 boys who were enrolled in Agriculture as members. Purposes of the organization and its activities were stressed and several activities were started, with most emphasis on leadership, sportsmanship, and good rid an recreation. A fine FFA Parent and Son banquet was held as one of the highlights of that year. Alvin Duerst, a new member in our school achieved the Wisconsin State Farmer dgree and along with Allen Theobald and Ronald Goke attended the National FFA at Kansas City that year. Last year with Allen Theobald as President, our chapter attempted several challenges some of which were seed treating, soil testing, milk testing, shop mechanics, improvement in livestock, and crop raising and improved production methods. Allen Theobald was awarded the Agricultural medal for outstanding work in Agriculture and also received the State Future Farmer degree at Green Lake at State FFA convention. A very fine FFA banquet was held for parents, FFA boys, and evening class members. This year we were happy to move into the new Agricultural room, which was newly constructed and organized our chapter with Vernon Kelly as President; James Leary, Vice- President; Vincent Ryan, Secretary; David Opsal, Treasurer; and Joe Ryan, Reporter. We have carried on some money making activities this year for the purpose of an intended trip for the members this summer. Some of the boys have applied for State FFA degree again this year and we plan to send delegates to State FFA Convention. We are planning a FFA banquet again and hope to carry on a good FFA program this summer which will fit us for the FFA school fair being planned for next fall. Our organization is attempting to live up to its motto: Learning to do; doing to learn; earning to live; and living to serve. 32 MARCH OF TIME 6:00 A.
