Hi PEOPLE 1 SENIORS .. 1988 As a Senior approaches the end oi his high school career, he begins to think about the rest of his life and about the path which he will follow. He knows that he wants to succeed in the goals he sets for himself and that he wants to be ac- cepted for what he does, but he also leams that being successful and accept- able does not mean that he must be ex- actly like everyone else. As time passes and a Senior begins to understand more about himself and his life, he realizes that it will be right to move in his own di- rection. Rockwell 11 The senior class of '88 has a style all its own, with an accent more on comfort than neatness. The guys tend to favor high-top shoes with the laces untied and tube socks. Shirttails were commonly untucked, and sleeves were rolled up. Coats and jackets were sporty looking and sun- glasses often accompanied. Haircuts were either below the collar or closely trimmed with few riding the fence. This is only a summary of the '88 fashions, many seniors chose to be themselves and make their own styles. C 2 W h-1 ►« H CO Popular brands of jeans were Lee's, Wrangler's, and Levi's. In the way of shirts, the class was split; half favored flannel shirts and half favored t-shirts with a favorite sports team or rock band on the front. 12 CO 00 CD s The fashion for the Senior girls of 1988 varied with each girl's personality. While some preferred the longer prairie-style skirts, others chose to wear the mini skirts which came back into style during the 87- 88 school year. Also popular with the girls were the knit sweater-skirt sets. Jeans, as always, were in style; the old favorite appeared in faded and stonewashed as well as the ever popular blue, denim. Shoes varied from tennis shoes to high heels. The colors that the girls liked were not all pastels, as they had been the year before. Although pastels were still pop- ular, brighter and bolder colors were also favorites. Girls with long hair used banana clips to put their hair up in a mane, which was a popular hair-style of the 1987-88 school year. Although the styles varied, the ladies of Barnesville High School continued to be in fashion and on the go. Anita Rachel Samuel Shanon Shipley Jeffrey R. Powder Puff and car wash- es. 19 Danny McGee Bob McManus Bryan McMiUen Amie Milhoan Jeff Miller Melvin Monroe Keith Moore Chris Morris Eric Morrison Carina Pierce Trent Powell John Roe Brent Rogers Reeda Rose Buddy Roux Jay Sawvel Gwen Sharp Not Pictured Mickey Baker Jenny Bowen Eric Burkhead 20 Shane Skinner Renu Souri Angie Starr Stephanie StarT Tony Starr Melinda Swallie Tammy Taylor Amy Thompson Shane Thornton Tammy Warner Alan Wehr Angie Wehr Rhonda Wells Rhett Wharton Kim Wilcox Aaron Wiley Travis Williams 21 Kim Bowersock Dee Brill Shannon Carpenter Tony Clift Kristen Clouse Brian Crum Russ Cunard Mickey DeWitt Kathy Doty Mary Elder David Fitch John Gilham CLASS OF 1989 Scott Otto Gary Quillin Theresa Quillin Kelly Roe Abe Sells Tammy Shaw Ronnie Starr Shad Starr Lori Stephens Bobbi Jo Street Krista Warner Mike Warrick 23 24 Each year many students in the Junior and Senior classes elect to go to the Joint Voca- tional Center to finish high school. There they have the opportunity to learn about the career of their choice. In this way, they speed up the process of education so that, upon graduation, they are prepared to enter the work field, or if they choose, to go on to higher education to learn more about their chosen career. The JVS gives students the chance to be with their friends while they meet new friends who share common interests. The BHS students, who go to the JVS, are proud of their accomplishments there, and for this BHS is proud of them. 1988 BHS Smile Throughout the 1987-88 school year, the Senrab camera caught many smiles. That must mean that BHS students had much to smile about this year. Some were smiles of accom- plishment, while some were smiles of mischief. Some were smil- ing with amusement while others were finding the strength to smile through a bad day. Whatever the reason, BHS students were always smiling, and the Senrab thought it would be ap- propriate to show some of these smiles. We are treated as young adults instead of infantile brats. Our classes are far from easy, but the teachers make the classes more interesting and worth listening to. High School teachers allow the students to be themselves and to express our ideas. The problem is they put a great deal of emphasis on homework, to which we are not accustomed to. The eighth grade teachers must not know what they were doing because they threw us in this big building to see if we can survive until our Senior year. (Some of us severely doubt.) And now here are the winners of the Freshmen Survey. Top 3: Favorite Song: (1)1 Think We're Alone Now. (2) Here I Go Again (3) The Power of Love. The clubs give students a chance to be together outside of the classroom while still working together toward a goal. While the clubs provide enjoyment for the students, they also, at times, provide services in the community. Through the clubs, BHS is portrayed well. Senrab Editors J Front Row: (L-R) A. Samuel} K. At BHS, a student can become involved in a variety of different activities, such as: sports, music, drama, and specialty student groups. D 69 I I Friendships Everyone deserves a friend to help him through the bad times and share the good times. At BHS, the signs of friendship were everywhere. Friends studied together in study hall (often cramming for tests). They talked as they walked to classes, and sometimes got in trouble together in classes. Friends went to sporting events and dances together, and when there was nothing else going on, they found something to do. Friendships were evident at Bamesville High School in 1988, and many of these friendships will continue long after high school days are over. SPORTS Throughout the year, sports play an active role at Bamesville High School. Not only do they provide school spirit, they also bring pride to the community. In this way, the students and citizens of Bamesville are brought together on a common ground in hopes of learning more about one another. Sports provide a means of friendly competition for the students of Bamesville High School and help them to develop their athletic skills and their character. 72 CROSS COUNTRY (BOYS) CROSS COUNTRY (GIRLS) First Row: B. Boys' highlights were a 6th out of 10 finish at the Watkins Invitational and 5th out of 13 at the Zanesville Invitational. Girls' highlights include a second place finish at the Martins Ferry Invitational. Nicole Reed, Kristen Watson, Brad Ankrom, and Keith Stoller were all named to the All-Belmont County Team. Brad and Keith also made it to Regional Competition at Lancaster. By Brad Ankrom and Eric Clymer GOLF This year the BHS golf team enjoyed a banner season. We posted the best record in the school's history, 23 wins and 4 losses. Two of the 4 losses were on the tiebreaker rule. Still we linksters won our league and league tournament with senior Rusty Hall flashing a 77 to take medalist honors. Also our team finished second in the O.V.A.C. with junior Shane Thornton carding an 85 which joined him to the all O.V.A.C. team, and we finished 8th in the District. By Craig Carpenter 83 VOLLEYBALL Memories of the 1987 Volleyball team. The 1987 volleyball team had a great season. Overall they had a victory record of 12-11. Among the most memorable were their win over Bellaire to make them sectional Champs. To further this, they went on to play Philo at Riverview Warsaw. Philo was the highest ranking team in this division. Although the lady Rocks had a final loss, they did make an impressive ending for the season. The reserve team did an exceptional job this year with their great determination. The varsity team was enthused with boosting the underclassmen, by giving them moral support. Among these varsity players were Lisa Burkhart, Julie Campbell, Nancy Decker, Sherry Hashman, Felicia (Meyers) Powell, Kelli Seneff, Leslie Toohey, Leslie Skinner, and Kim Wilcox. The motto of the Lady Rocks was Jump to Bump, Set to the Net, Spike to the floor and score. Score, Score. By Julie Campbell Leslie Toohey 84 C FOOTBALL Thank God it's Friday, because we're ready to play. At least McGee was always ready, walking around the locker room two hours before game time, stating that Someone's going out in the woo woo car. And McCrate, he always used about ten pounds of tape to hold himself together. Then about a half an hour before game time Shep would roll in, and it would take him the whole half an hour to get ready. As for me, I usually slept or went to the bathroom ten or fifteen times. Every Friday was the same for ten weeks. Nothing changed, except the score. by Louie Bruce 85 C BOYS' BASKETBALL The 1987 Basketball season was one that had many times of jubilant emotion after a win and times of frustration and discouragement after a tough loss. At the beginning of the season, the team really played well, winning seven out of their first ten games. This was the best start for a Bamesville basketball team in fourteen years. The second half of the season was not as kind to the Shamrock Cagers. The team lost eight out of their last ten games. Many of these losses were very close one or two point decisions. At tournament time, the team lost to State Semi Finalist Tuscarawas Valley. The Varsity finished with a nine and twelve record. The reserve finished with a fine eleven and nine record. By Matt Powell GIRLS BASKETBALL The Lady Shamrocks finished the season with a varsity record of 12-9 and a reserve record of 11-9. The problem is the girls work just as hard as the boys but only receive about half the recognition. When asking someone the question, Are you going to the game tonight? the answer is usually Yeah! I'll be there. If it refers to the boys' games. On the other hand if it refers to the girls' games, the answer is No! I'm busy. or I've got homework. What you don't know is that you're really missing something. The girls play some pretty hard and rough ball, but the only people who see it are the parents and a few loyal fans. This year's varsity squad beat the school record for the most wins since the early 1970's, and Amy Bunting became the schools all-time leading scorer. All this combined proves the girls are winners and are worth coming to see. by: Dawn Ackerman 87 C Boys' Track The boys' varsity track team has enjoyed a fine season during the 1988 year. The team's strongpoint for success has been the fact that over half of the team is composed of seniors and the valuable contributions of underclassmen. The teams main highlights have been a 4th place finish out of 41 teams in the Shadyside Relays and a 3rd place finish in the Ohio Valley Track League championship. Junior standout, Tim McCrate had been the main point contributor with victories and meet records in such events as the OVAC championships and the OVTL championships, Tim finished 4th in the 110 meter high hurdles at the state meet in Columbus last year and he will be a strong competitor for the finals in both the 100 meter high hurdles and the 300 meter intermediate hurdles this year at the state meet. Other such highlight events include school record performances by the 4x200 meter relay team, Troy Fitzpatrick in the 200 meter dash, the shuttle hurdle relay team which finished a few tenths of a second behind the all time OVAC record and Jay Sawvel's championship in the discus. Brad Ankrom Baseball The varsity baseball team enjoyed a good season despite blustery conditions for much of April. The highlight of the season was winning the annual Shamrock Diamond Classic. The rocks defeated the Coshocton Redskins 2- 1 in the semifinals, and topped state ranked Hebron Lakewood 4-3 to gain the championship. Coaches Brad Wilson and Andy Marovich will lose the services of 7 seniors: Mike Shutt, Jeff Shepherd, Rusty Hall, Louie Bruce, Mike Blake, Craig Keiser, and Eric Clymer. by Rusty Hall WRESTLING The Wrestling squad for 1987-88 season finished with a 2-9 record in dual meets. They competed in the Barnesville Invitational in December finishing 12th place with 16 teams entered. The giant OVAC followed in January with one wrestler placing 4th. Bob McManus. Barnesville hosted the sectional tournament this year on February 26th and 27th. There were four wrestlers qualified for the districts. Bob McManus. Champion finished at 119 lbs. Mike Castello qualified with a 3rd place at 125 lbs. Rick Milhoan with a 2nd place at 135 lbs. and Bryce Davis 4th place finished at 171 lbs. The district tournament was held at Bellaire on March 5th. Barnesville qualified one wrestler for a state berth, with a 2nd place finish at the districts by Bob McManus. At first, he may be overwhelmed with the choices he has to make, but through experiments, he finds a way to express his talents and energies. Look through the following pages, and you will see how the students of BHS chose to devote themselves in the 87-88 year. Pumpkin Festival Everyone looks forward to the Barnesville Pumpkin Festival when September draws near. The festival is an annual event which lasts four days and holds something for all members of the family. There are games, rides, a parade, window displays and the pumpkin patch and if a person gets hungry, there are always plenty of food stands. 96 One street is entirely devoted to pumpkins, with the pumpkin tree. King Pumpkin and tables of other fruits and vegetables. Many B.H.S. students participate in the Fes- tival through their clubs. The Art Club paints windows and decorates the stages, the F.F.A. sells fresh apple cider, and the F.H.A. sells pumpkin bread. The Band marches in the pa- rade, the Chorus performs on one of the stages, and the cheerleaders are in the Cheerleader Competition. 97 I 98 D It's Magic Homecoming '87 was a special time for six- teen Senior girls. They, along with all of their classmates and teachers enjoyed a fun-filled week of activity and anticipation. The girls and their advisers, Mrs. Bunfill and Miss Reineke, had been rehearsing for the upcom- ing assembly for many weeks, and this was their time to enjoy the result of their work. Each girl had her moment in the spotlight as her name and her special interests were read on the morning announcements preceding the Friday of the assembly. On Thursday, there was a parade in honor of the candidates with the band and the football team participating. The parade ended at the stadium where the traditional bonfire was held. Friday morning brought the voting of the student body for the candidates of their choice. The excitement and the nervousness about the assembly and the football game were apparent on each can- didate's face, but the nervousness disap- peared as the assembly began, and each girl seemed to enjoy her part in it. The festivities ended at half-time of the football game with lanene Gray being crowned as Queen, with Angie Harris, Kassie Detling, and Jennifer Swallie serving as her court. On a cold evening in Oc- tober, the Senior-Frosh and Junior-Sophs met on the field to battle for the title of Powder Puff Champion in 1987. The thrill of competition was in the air as the teams with their coaches: Brad McGee, Louie Bruce, Shawn Wharton, and Jeff Shepherd for the Senior- Frosh team and Mike Blake, Troy Fitzpatrick, Brad Gray, and Sean McCrate for the Jun- ior-Sophs team, took the field. The game got underway with Mr. Shuman and Mr. Kovalick providing the informative and entertaining commentary. Powder Puff Powder Puff The Cheerleaders with their pep and confi- dence cheered the teams on. They were Jim Mayberry, Kevin Buck Wehr, Eric Clift, and Chris Carpenter. At half-time, Louie Bruce was crowned the Powder Puff King of 1987. The eventful evening resulted in the Senior- Frosh beating the Junior-Sophs 18-12. This was the first victory for the Senior-Frosh in their four years. D 101 42nd STREET This year the Drama Club presented the musical 42nd Street under the direction of Pa- tricia Reineke. The characters in the musical included: Vicki Griener, Debbie Turner, Allen Carpenter, Kris Brown, Kristen Watson, Chris Morris, Scott Ward, Brian Wehr, Rhonda Jones, Michelle Funari, Mickey Hoskinson, Amy Thompson, Dawn Hunter, Anita Samuel, John Casterline, Rick Wheeler, Lori Robb, Ker- rie Doty, Jim Mayberry, and Lynn Hoskinson. In the musical there were many tap dances and the students did exceptionally well con- sidering that they never had tap lessons be- forehand. Some of the songs were: Lullaby of Broadway, We're in the Money, Forty- Second Street, and Shuffle Off to Buffalo. The students worked really hard to put on the best show that they could and it turned out to be a pretty big success. Thanks to everyone and Good Luck. Kristen Watson FORTY-SECOND ST. 105 STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN This year's prom, Stairway to Heaven, was held on Saturday, April 30. The colors of decorations were chosen to be purple and silver. Everyone spent the Friday eve- ning before the event working hard. A tunnel of purple and silver streamers led to the staircase which was dec- orated as the Stairway to Heaven; silver foil and purple cracked ice covered the steps and silver gates were set at the first landing. The lobby and ceiling committees dec- orated with metallic streamers, and the walls were cov- ered with purple paper, foil, and balloons. Approximately 230 attended the prom, and they were entertained by the band Roadwork. Later in the evening Craig Circosta announced that Mike Blake and Julie Dowler were chosen as Prom King and Queen, and they were crowned by Tammy Warner. An afterprom was held following the prom. It was en- titled A Night in Vegas and was a continuation from last years idea. Casino games were played for paper money. At the end, the money could be used to buy prizes which were donated by the parents and local businesses. The prizes were auctioned off by Richard Pryor. The night came to a close with a raffle drawing won by Keith Moore. The prom was considered a tremendous success by all. The prom committees, parents, and faculty were greatly appreciated. Mr. Davis, the Junior Class Advisor, is es- pecially to be commended for all his patience, dedication, and help. by Tammy Warner MAY DAY — 1988 MAYDAY Reflections in May May Day '88 was presided over by Junior May Day Queen Angie Starr, who was crowned by former Queen Kassie Detling. The courts four attendants were Freshman Ammie Davis, Sophomore Penny Wells, Junior Lori Stephens, and Senior Kristal Hunkier. The competition was dominated by the Senior girls. Besides the annual balloon-popping race and various ball relays, new contests were co-ed tug-of-war and rope climbing. 106 (Left)National Honor Society New Members First Row: J. Sawvel, B. Rogers, L. By Louie Bruce Despite the fact of only winning five games, I guess you could say we were a balanced team. Summer was almost over and the thought of a 2-a-days made us wish we were cheerleaders. Getting up at 7:00 a.m. in August didn't thrill anyone, except maybe Winnie who got up at 6:00 a.m. The ground would still be wet when we started practicing, by the time we were done stretching everyone had a cold. We came back for afternoon practices with our practice gear still wet and got broiled in the hot August sun. This is how we spent a month of our summer. Being the new kid in town coach Marks taught us the Wing T, an offense similar to our old Wish Bone. September came, and we were ready to roll, hungry for victory. We got off to a fabulous start, and then we lost confidence; we lacked teamwork and execution. We expected more of ourselves; we wanted to be the best. The frustration came with the defeats and satisfaction with the victories. We were al- ways making room for improvement, going that extra yard, making that extra block, but the ball didn't bounce in our direction except five times. The fact of being seniors we were happy it was over on the gridiron. We might have only won five games, but we always went the whole nine yards. 112 D AWARDS HONORS SPORTS Picture 1 Volleyball (L-R) Kelli Seneff................................ By Kristen Watson D GRADUATION May 29, 1988 marked the end of twelve years of work, play, friendships, and growing up for this year's Seniors. Suddenly they faced with anticipation and anxiety the future that they had been preparing for throughout their school days. But, on that special day of be- ginnings and ends, the Seniors took the time to reflect on the good and bad times that they had shared. They realized that after all the years of growing up together, the time had come to go in separate directions. What the future had to hold would change them into adults who would have different experiences, but they would always share the memories of being students at BHS and of a special day in May of 1988 when their lives changed forever.
