Text from Pages 1 - 152 of the 1987 volume:

THE GL When a senior student is trying to find the right career for himself, he must ask many questions. Seniors must be prepared for what is in store for him. The questions he must most likely ask himself are Am I really ready for this big change? Will I be happy with my choice? Am I qualified? If the senior student can answer all of these questions yes, he has a good chance of being a success. Everyone needs the responsibility of be- ing on his own and the commitment which goes along with life. Be prepared and dream for the best. Good Health, Love, and Fortune! There are many Glory Days ahead. CLA! 2 SENIORS 87 SS OF 1987 Annette Milhoan Anderson Leslie Ault Darrell L. There is no lonelier person in the world than a person who has no friends. Everyone needs a friend, someone with whom it is possible to share deepest thoughts and feelings. Being a good friend is not saying I need a friend.'' It's saying, That person needs me. When you have that attitude, it transforms your whole ap- proach to friendship. What elements are necessary to make a friendship? First of all, loyalty is needed. Loyalty is indispen- sable in a friendship. It doesn't simply mean defending him when someone else maligns him. Even when what is said about him is true, you should not turn your back on him. Availability is also necessary. Friendships weaken if you don't have time for each other. Without this, you have no way of knowing what's going on in the other person's life. Then how can you help him? Friends need you to help them through everything, especially the rougher spots. Probably the single most important part of a rela- tionship is trust. Have you ever confided in some- one only to find out that everyone in school knew about it the next day? Once a confidence has been betrayed, a friendship is in serious trouble. Being a friend and having a friend involve many risks. When you open up your heart and your feel- ings to another person, you take a chance on his being trustworthy. As your friendship grows, so does the trust you place in each other. Never lose sight of the fact that no person can meet the needs of another completely. Our expec- tations of our friends must be realistic. Are you willing to sacrifice your personal desires to do something special for a friend who needs you? Ask yourself this question! Friendships do not come handed to you in gift- wrapped packages. They are built, step by step, over a period of time; and the process can't be rushed. It takes a lot of hard work, determination, and possibly even tears — but it's worth it. by BRAD WEES 14 SENIORS 87 It was the best of times: it was the worst of times — but it was always a time for friendship. Friendships grew through the years bonding us through life. The year was composed of laughter and memories for all. SENIORS 87 15 SENIORS 'Care to dance Nick?' SENIORS 87 17 JUNIORS Pictured left are the Junior class officers: Angie Harris, President; Rusty Hall, Vice- President; Barb Bonvenuto, Secretary; and Scott Ward, . Mrs. Pitha was Chairperson. The Class of 88 was responsible for organizing and decorating the Prom. In order to raise money, we had many projects during our Freshman and Sophomore years. These included dances, car washes, and a salad din- ner. We continued making money in 1986-87 through various projects. We had the annual Chicken Barbecue before the Homecoming game against Union Local. We sponsored the Powder Puff game. We also had a concession stand at the O.V.A.C. volleyball tournament, which was held here at Barnesville High School. The night before the Prom was spent decorating. It was well worth the effort, as the Prom was a success. — Julie Dowler Brad Ankrom Kristy Bailey Ondra Bondy Barb Bonvenuto John Braido Krista Brown Louie Bruce Doris Cameron Julie Campbell Frank Carpenter Mike Castello Mandy Clift Tim Clift Eric Clymer Beth Conway Barb Cunard Tammy Datkuliak Caryn Dellamorta Kassie Detling Lilli Doudna Julie Dowler Christa Dunfee Daniel Funari Angela Ciesey 18 JUNIORS Bonnie Gordon Stephanie Grear Amista Groves Rusty Hall Angie Harris Traci Hatcher David Hicken bottom Missy Hossman Molly House Johnna Hunkier Kristal Hunkier Dawn Ann Hunter Amy Huntsman Tony Kalman Rick Keiser Missy Kriechbaum Rae Ann Lashley Carlene Lewis Mike Lucas Denise Martin Sean McCrate Tood McEndree Bill McFrederick Brad McGee Loma Merecka Dan Merritt Lori Michelli James Moore Chris Parkhurst Angel Pittner Jennifer Reed Anita Samuel Kelli Seneff Jeff Shepherd Mike Shutt Ro Ann Stanley Larry Stephen Lynn Stephen Michelle Stiles Keith Stoller Julia Sudduth Jennifer Swallie JUNIORS 19 Leslie Toohey Scott Ward Danette Warrick Kristen Watson Kevin Wehr Dennis Welch Shawn Wharton Scott Wilcox Christy Willis Shirley Wines James Winland Shannon Wise 20 JUNIORS john Anderson Mickey Baker Heidi Bell Kim Benson Richard Bishop Jennifer Blake Kim Bowersock Angela Briggs Dee Brill Wesley Brown Vickie Bunfil Amy Bunting Melissa Burghy Eric Burkhead Adam Carpenter Craig Carpenter Shannon Carpenter john Casterline Craig Circosta Tony Clift Kristen Clouse Brian Crum Russ Cunard Bryce Davis Nancy Decker Bobby Deloma Michel Dewitt Jodie Dimitro Scott Ditto William Dodd Kathryn Doty John Doudna Kim Duvall Darla Eberhart Heather Eddy 22 SOPHOMORES SOPHOMORES Club Officers Angie Wehr Treasury Craig Circosta President Eric Lavanchy — Vice President Jay Sawvel — Secretary Mary Elder David Fitch Michelle Funari Leann Gibson John Gilham Albert Givens Teresa Goff Stephanie Gray Jeff G rear Vickie Greiner Troy Hannahs Frank Hashman Sherry Hashman Robert Hayes J. President Ty Leach — Treasurer Amy Murphy — Secretary The freshman class of 1987 took a survey. Their favorite song was You Give Love a Bad Name. Top Gun was the favorite movie. The rock group Bon Jovi was by far the favorite group. Their favorite class was Mr. Carissimi's English class. Pizza was the favorite food. The freshmen liked high school because they're glad to be out of grade school. They feel they have more privileges and are able to make friends with the upperclassmen. They also feel that they're not treated as little kids anymore but as young adults. The freshmen said they really like their teachers, too. — Heather Harrison Dawn Ackerman Denise Adkins Lori Adkins Jody Anderson Marvin Anderson Scott Ankrom Joel Atkinson Larry Baker Robyn Baker Mike Beckett Angie Bennett Rob Blaney Tawnya Briggs Lisa Burkhart Kim Cameron Amy Campbell Allen Carpenter Dannette Carpenter Darlene Carpenter Denise Carpenter 26 FRESHMEN Steve Sroka Gary Stephen Todd Stephen Corey Stephens Holly Strous Richard Sudduth Dawn Thompson Jodie Toohey PaulToohey Rita Toohey Tom Triplett Debbie Turner Brian Wehr Kim Wehr Jeff Wells Penny Wells Tiffany Wells Rick Wheeler Jarrod Wilkinson Jason Winland Rick Baker Jim Blon Denny Burkhart Mark Burkhart Connie Campbell Jerry Campbell Garold Carpenter Mary Carpenter Mike Carpenter Eric Clift Julie Dalrymple Melody Edwards Mike Edwards Troy Fitzpatrick Janie Froehlich Brian Goodhart Brad Gray Janene Gray Penni Hinkle Joe Howiler Mickey Kirk Tim Johnson 0 30 JVS I Bruce Luyster Jimmy Mayberry Mike McBride Felicia Meyers Kenny Mobley Mandy Moore Lisa Rockwell Scott Stephen Brenda Stephens Wendy Thompson Barb Toohey Matt Williams Scott Willison JVS 31 GETTING TECHNICAL JVS Picture 1 Garold Carpenter Picture 2 Back Row: Left to Right: Shannon Shipley, Lori Snodgrass. Caught in a continuous flow of schoolwork and after-school schedules, students have to make time for their busy social lives. Barnesville's youth have more energy, more excitement in their lives. This energy is reflected throughout these pages. STUDENT LIFE SECTION II, STUDENT LIFE 49 SENRAB Editors: Front Row: Melody Bondy, Raquel Barr, Brad Wees, Tommie Sroka. He stayed with his parents in California for four days. The weather was warm, and the people were nice. The Disneyland Hotel was the head- quarters for the race. The entire week before the race, there were many ban- quets with special guest runners speaking. On the day of the race, many people showed up early in the morning to walk the course and give the runners time to warm up. The races were divided into several age groups. It was an all day event. There were around 2000 runners. The course was all dirt and very hilly. The race was full of competitors from all over the U.S. Brad finished 88th out of 281 runners. The stay in California was nice, and the race was a good experience in big races. I hope to compete again next year, said Brad. No, it's a game that takes skill, patience, and practice. The golf team had these characteristics this year in that the team was 20-15 this year, the most wins ever by a Shamrock Golf Team. The team also finished 4th in the O.V.A.C. and 3rd in the Bel Roe Tourney, while playing against some tough competition and inclement weather. A highlight for next year will be four returning lettermen, three of which will be juniors. All things considered, golf is an individual sport played in a team concept. No matter how bad you play, you still rely on your teammates. This quality allows golfers not only to root for one another but to help one another. It all actually starts with the off season weight training program, which is designed for the players to build their strength, quickness, and endurance. After lifting through their shortened summer vacation, the players start to attend practices at the beginning of August. Just imagine a group of somewhat in- sane boys standing on a practice field at 7:30 in the morning. The variety of facial expressions tells the story for each age group. The Freshmen have the worried and somewhat lost look; the Sophomores are standing there with the Thank God I'm not a freshman look; the Juniors are all looking like they really are not sure why they are there; and the Seniors' facial expression is, Why did I get out of bed at 7:00 A.M.in the summer to roll around in some wet grass! After the intense practices are over, the in- tense season begins. The action-packed games filled with fun and excitement pleases the home crowd. As for this year, the team feels as if they have done their job by pulling out a winning 6-4 season. But the one thing we will always remember is Coach Dowler's voice saying If I'm yelling at ya, you know I love ya! He really must have loved the seniors this past season. — Jim Ohm and Aaron Hannahs BHS FOOTBALL RECORD 6-4 BHS OPPONENT 6 John Glenn 0 20 Meadowbrook 14 8 River 30 13 Buckeye Trail 3 12 Bridgeport 6 8 Wellsville 26 26 Union Local 0 14 Shadyside 12 14 St. Clairsville 34 8 St. John's 19 Reserve Record 4-2-1 FOOTBALL 81 The 1986-87 Barnesville High School boy's basketball season was successful in certain aspects, even though the Varsity record was 3-18 and the Reserve record was 2-18. Preparations were being made for the annual Pumpkin Festival at the end of September. It was also the beginning of the final football season for our senior Shamrocks. Pep assemblies gave the student body a reason to get out of class and an opportunity to get rowdy. Another major event of the fall of 1986 was the B.H.S. Homecoming, where Raquel Barr was crowned as Queen. Fall not only marks the beginning of school but also the creation of lasting memories. — Brad Wees FALL 99 HOMECOMING — U.S.A. WITH ALL THE PIZZAZZ OF A BROADWAY SHOW On the day the Homecoming candidates were nominated, I was excited and surprised to find out that I had been nominated to represent the Varsity B club. I didn't know what to expect in the next few weeks that followed; I was scared, excited, and anxious. Mr. Carissimi and Mrs. Bunfill instructed us on what to do and how to prepare. We had many practices for the assembly we put on. Mr. Carissimi was very pa- tient with us and made getting ready easier. The day of the assembly I was scared to death. We were all bouncing around as nervous as could be. When the curtains opened and I saw all those people, I just about died. Once the assembly was over, I was so relieved. That night we rode from the High School to the stadium on our cars. I froze to death! I felt very proud riding through town though, I felt lucky. Friday at school everyone voted, and I think all the candidates tried to act calm that night, but were really going crazy. I sat in the stands with my family during the first half shivering from the cold and from my nervousness. I thought about what an honor it was to be there and to be able to walk out there at halftime. When it was time to go out on the field, I held on tight to my parents and held my breath. As the tenseness grew and grew, I looked up in the crowd at all my friends and at everyone and felt good inside. Finally Mrs. Timmons began to announce the 1986 Queen, and it seemed like a thousand years before she said Miss Raquel Barr. I could hardly move, yet I couldn't stop shaking. My eyes filled up with tears, and I saw all the people I love around me, and it was one of the greatest moments in my life? I've never hugged so many people in my life! Watching the foot- ball team win and realizing what had just happened made that night overwhelming and one that I'll never forget! I thank everyone who made it possible for me to be Homecoming Queen of Barnesville High School! — Raquel Barr Candidates were: Bonnie Doty, FTA; Kim Castello, Senrab; Angela Burkhart, NHS; Kim Miller, FFA; Sherry Pryor, FHA; Shelly Cutshaver, Key Club; Jody Wells, JVS; Lei Ann Wells, Art Club; Raquel Barr, Varsity B; Karen Casterline, Rockette; Debbie Fisher, Band; Lisa Snodgrass, Chorus; Alicia Howell, SAA; Angela McBurney, Drama Club; Peggy Kurtz, Student Council. Court: tied for second runner-up were Angela Burkhart and Jody Wells. Runner-up was Lei Ann Wells (also voted Miss Spirit ). Queen: Raquel Barr. HOMECOMING 101 SOMETHING SPECIAL — JR. CLASS POWDER PUFF It was a great honor to be selected as the 1986 Powder Puff King. I would like to thank everyone who voted for me. To be selected was a very emotional time in my life. I would especially like to thank Aaron Hannahs for his moral support during this time. I also would like to congratulate the Senior and Freshman classes for a great victory and to Cindy Gilmore for being chosen the Most Valuable Player of the game. Once again, I would like to thank everyone for their support. — Nick Saffield 102 POWDER PUFF The annual Powder Puff Football game was held on October 14, 1986, at the Barnesville Stadium. The Senior-Frosh team, coached by Nick Saffield and Troy Moore, led at halftime by a score of 14-0. During halftime, Nick Saffield was crowned the 1986 Powder Puff King by Raquel Barr, the 1986 Homecom- ing Queen. Headed by Richie Wells and Bob Froehlich, the Junior-Soph team was unable to score once during the entire game. The Senior-Frosh squad scored once more and won the game by a score of 22-0. The butterflies and nerves that the performers felt a few minutes before vanish. The audience is hushed and waiting to be entertained. The performers step on stage, and from that moment on, they are in control of the audiences' reaction. It is a whole different world where the performer is com- pletely someone different, portrays a different personality and, at the same time, brings enter- tainment to people. For the past four years before every Drama Club performance, I have felt the same feelings described above. It is a wonderful feeling. It was a great privilege to perform for Barnesville High School Drama Club under the direction of Mr. Carissimi. Mr. C taught me many things about performing and staging especially when it came to perfection. He gave me values about performing that will always stay with me. From a frightened freshman to a graduating senior, all the memories of rehearsals, performances and Mr. C's raging outbursts at dress rehearsals will always be remembered. To him I owe many thanks and appreciation. This year's perfor- mance was of the best, and as it should, since it was Mr. C's last. A job well-done, and I am thankful that I was a part of it all. The senior girls were the victors in relays, co-ed relays, and tug-of-war, which they have won for the last four years. Also victorious was the Senior Volleyball team, consisting of Angela Burkhart, Cindy Gilmore, Raquel Barr, Matthew Garrett, Stacey Moore, and Bob Froehlich. Win- ning the Artillery match were the Lightweight — Travis Bell, and Heavyweight — Brian Hinkle. The day's events ended with the traditional winding of the May Pole by the senior girls. It was a glorious day not soon to be forgotten by the Senior class of 1987. — Brad Wees 108 MAY DAY CLASS OF 1987 May 31, 1987 was the long-awaited day for the seniors of the class of'87. Many emotions were ex- pressed by the soon-to-be graduated: fear, an- ticipation, hope, relief, concern, enthusiasm. Tears were shed, embraces were shared, and good-byes were exchanged. And whereas most everyone was nervous; some were sad, and others were glad that our high school days were over. After twelve years of work, fun, and friendship, the end had finally ar- rived. The best times of our lives were finally com- ing to a close. Many different bonds had been formed over the past twelve years, and now the time had come that these bonds would be weakened. Many special relationships that had been strong throughout the years would now be ending. But even though we will all be going our separate ways, we will always be together in spirit and memory. Graduation was a time to look back on the last twelve years of our lives: the laughter, the tears, and the special times that will be in our hearts forever. This was a year of great music, fads, fashion, and good times. No one could forget Bon Jovi's You Give Love a Bad Name; the Bangles' Walk Like an Egyptian; our prom theme, Stand By Me by Ben E. King, and our very own Tyrant with their rendition of Rainbow in the Dark. — Tricia Warner 120 CANDIDS Monday everyone would be re- counting tales about their ex- citing weekend. We didn't necessarily have to be out of school to have a good time. The many field trips that were taken always proved to be in- teresting. Just being in school could be fun — that is if you weren't caught skipping class or yelling in the cafeteria. Even though we had our share of fun, this was also a year of sadness for some, particularly the Seniors. This being their last year here at B.H.S. made everything a little bit more special and meaningful. All of us share memories of B.H.S., not all good, but this is where we grew up, and we are not likely to forget it. — Tricia Warner We were a very fashion-oriented group during this year. The favorites were hightops with layered socks, ten-button shirts, suspenders, any kind of sweater imaginable, and leather jackets. Sometimes we still preferred the basics: faded jeans and a sweat- shirt. Whichever way we were dressed, we were always on the lookout for a great time. Most of us lived for the weekend and enjoyed every minute of it. We went with the old standards of getting pizza, piling into a car, cruising town. If we were lucky someone would be having a party because their parents were out of town. The next SENIOR INDEX BAKER, DARRELL L. F.F.A. 9, 10; Auto Body Class Officer, J.V.S.
