The Sheite hi- jackers took the plane to Beirut, then to Algeria and then back to Beirut. Most of the hostages were released within days but the re- maining 39 hostages were held for 17 days. One American hostage was killed. Farm Aid: Willie Nelson’s concert made a small dent in farmers’ spiraling debt. President Reagan, with his wife Nancy, gives the A-Okay sign from his hospital window in July after undergoing surgery to remove a Number 1 T-Shirt: A Delta Airlines jetliner crashed near Dallas in August, killing 137 people. The plane was on a flight from Fort Lauderdale, Florida to Los Angeles with an intermediate stop at Dallas-Fort Worth. Thirty-four people survived the crash but five died of injuries later. The plane en- countered a severe wind shear as it plunged to the ground. 2 Current Events 1985-1986 Current Events cancerous tumor from his lower intestine. The 74-year old president was back on the job within weeks after the operation. Halley’s Comet Returns The comet made its once — every 75 year visit to our solar system. A distraught Moslem man hugs his son moments after they survived a car bomb explosion outside a West Beirut restaurant in late August. They are shown being hurried away from the carnage by another man as cars burn in the rubble-strewn street. Current Events 3 1985-1986 Current Events 240 Servicemen Die in Crash in Newfoundland in December. An entire city block was destroyed in Philadelphia. Police tried to evict members of the radical group MOVE from their fortified rowhouse by dropping a small bomb on the building. A fire was started by the device and about 60 houses were destroyed. A series of devastating earthquakes rumbled through Mexico City in September and the death toll was in the thousands. Few in the metropolitan area of 18 million escaped the effects of the first quake, which registered 8.1 on the Richter scale; or the second quake, which measured 7.5. 4 Current Events 1985-1986 Current Events Four Palestinian terrorists hijacked the Italian cruise liner Achille Lauro while on a Mediterranean cruise. One American was killed. After the ship was released the Egyptian government agreed to return the hijackers to the PLO. However, the hi- jackers were intercepted by American jets as they were flown out of Egypt and returned to Italy to stand trial. The space program moved ahead. Space walker James van Hoften stands tall on the end of the robot arm of the Space Shuttle Discovery after successfully launching the repaired Syncom satellite in September. Royals’ pitcher Bret Saberhagen embraces third baseman George Brett after pitching a five-hitter to give the Royals the World Series crown over the St. Louis Cardinals. Saberhagen, the winner of two series games, was named as the Most Valuable Player in the series. Super Bowl XX — Chicago Bears Jim McMahon and kicker Kevin Butler on the sidelines during the game. Baseball 41 Julie Hunkier, Cindy Gilmore and Angela Burkhart were all chosen for the OVAC all conference team. Julie and Angela were also on the all district team. Cindy receiv- ed honorable mention all district. Angela was also chosen for the first team all state. Julie received additional honors as a member of the OVAC all star team and Intellegencer’s Ohio Valley honor roll for athletes with a G.P.A. of 3.89. 18 wins 7 losses In the OVAC, we won the OVAC by beating Buckeye South 5-4. Huntsman and S. Gray set a new school record at the regional meet. Freshman Amy Milhoan received the track event trophy and MVP award. Rocky Barr received the high point field trophy. Freshmen Stephanie Gray set a school record in the 200m run. Girls Track 47 VARSITY Johnna Hunkier, Kassie Detling, Jennifer Swallie, Joyce Jones, Denise Martin, Missy Anderson, Jill Hissom, Julie Dowler. The Barnesville High School cheerleaders are known for their school pride and spirit. This year the cheerleaders led the applause for a vic- torious football team, and a basketball team who made it all the way to district tournaments and were sectional champs. The Varsity and Reserve squads, advised by Miss Evelyn Thomas, and the Freshman squad, advised by Miss Amy Hess, were active in planning pep assemblies, decorating buses, organizing banquets, and making spirit signs for the teams. Senior Varsity Squad members organized cheerleader try-outs, and made sure they ran as smooth as possible. The captain of the Varsity Squad was Jill Hissom. The band now has several auxiliary parts. The stage band was started this year. This band has backed up the chorus on several numbers. Next year this band will pro- bably be bigger and better. The pep band plays at the basketball games and at the basketball pep assemblies. The band also provides us with music during their three concerts. At the Pumpkin Festival, they make and sell apple cider. They also put on a fourth grade tour, and they construct their Little Red Barns” and sell them. Every year the F.F.A. goes into competition with other F.F.A. Chapters. The judging teams include general livestock, dairy, natural resources, and soil. They also go to competition in the fields of Parliamentary Procedure and Public Speaking. The F.F.A. has elected their officers for the 1986-87 school year. The National Honor Society is a prestigious and active group throughout the community and Barnesville High School. This year the National Honor Society did a community survey for the Barnesville Chamber of Com- merce. The NHS planned this year's Christmas program. Each month, the NHS chooses a member of the student body as NHS Student of the Month. On April 24th, the National Honor Society will hold the candlelight induction of new members. The advisor of the National Honor Society is Mr. Carissimi. The Key Club is under the careful supervision of Mr. Obusek and the officers of the club. The Key Club was very active this year. They were involved in the annual Kiwanis Pan- cake Day and the Sweetheart Dance, which was termed as “huge success.” They also sold pop at every home basketball game. In this activity, anyone age seven- teen years or older was permitted to par- ticipate in the act of giving blood. Anyone outside the school, parents, etc., who wished to give was allowed to also par- ticipate. Overall, the Blood Bash turned out to be a success. Advised by Mr. Carissimi, the Drama Club joins with the FHA at the beginning of the year to pre- sent Homecoming. In mid- December the Drama Club decorates the Christmas Tree in the lobby of the High School, in the spirit of the seasonal tradition. In April of this year, the Drama Club and the Chorus presents The Facts of Life as a theatrical musical production.
