Text from Pages 1 - 184 of the 1978 volume:

opening I think I'm goin' back to the things I learned so well in my youth. I think I’m returning to those days when I was young enough to know the truth. 4 Opening Now there are no games to only pass the time, No more electric trains, no trees to climb, Thinking young and growing older is no sin, And I can play the game of life to win. S Op«n ng I can recall a time when I wasn't ashamed to reach out to a friend Now I think I've got, A lot more than just toys to lend, 10 Opening Opening 1 1 Now there's more to do than watch my sailboat glide, And every day can be my magic carpet-ride, A little bit of courage is all we lack, So catch me if you can, I'm goin' back. All Rights Reserved. ng'77 The 1977 Homecoming Pag- eant had all of the style of Home- comings gone by, a credit to Mrs. Timmons and the clubs who worked hard to prepare for the event. The tension started as the clubs nominated their candi- dates and built through the next two weeks. Then, a few days before the Homecoming game, the clubs and candidates held their annual Homecoming Assembly. The clubs presented their skits, full of comedy and forgotten lines. Then, the candi- dates paraded before the stu- dent body in formal dress. Now, it was up to the student body to vote for their queen. Finally, as the Shamrocks were soundly defeating Bellaire St. John’s, Ann Plumly was declared Barnesville High School’s 1977 Homecoming Queen. “Bye Bye Birdie Some personal opinions of a few main characters: “Playing a part in the play, I know the hard work and long hours that were put into it. The general reaction of the play was overwhelming to me and the public. A play like this boosts the moral of the towns’ people and taxpayers and leaves a good impression of the school.” — A. Logan “The production was one of the best things that has ever come out of B.H.S.. . . I learned a lot and made many friends in the school. . .It would be nice to come and see a musical next year.” — J. Grimes “By being apart of the musical, many of us realized the special talents that had been hidden within ourselves. With each performance, a stronger unity seemed to form between us, as we cheered each other on, and felt a strong pride in our production. Now, after all is finished, we can smile upon those long months of practice and know that is was worth it.” — P. Rigel, long time educator at Barnesville, was retiring. For the students, faculty, and administration of the school system, it was the end of an era. Everyone involved with BHS will miss his teaching, walking the halls, or simply standing in the library reading the morning paper. The people of the school district will be forever indebted to Mr. Rigel for his years of service to both the school and community. FACULTY Teachers 1. Mrs. Lemasters 2. Mr. Welsh 3. Mrs. Dyrdek 4. Freshmen 69 wmm 70 §1 mmmm 8P0RT8 Each year Cheerleading tryouts roll around producing anxiety and tension. This is the time of year that many girls look forward to. After making a squad, summer brings days of hard practice in the hot sun. Varsity prepared for the toilsome but memorable week at camp. The other squads prepared to cheer their team to victory. This year we bade a fond farewell to Mrs. T, the cheerleading advisor, and a hardy welcome to Miss Hawk, the new green advisor. Varsity and reserve squads mastered most of the techniques of the newly-bought mini- tramp. Cheerleader6 73 RECORD 11-8-1 INDIVIDUAL MATCH AVERAGES A. Phillips 46 C. Bradfield 45 S. Howell 41.4 A. These Shamrocks reinstated the fine football tradition of Barnesville High School. The Big Green opened with a convincing victory over favored John Glenn. Bouncing back from two crushing losses to River and Cambridge, the Fighting Eleven turned the tables to gain solid victories over Bridgeport, St. John, Shenandoah and Union Local. After a bombardment by the Red Devils who crushed the Shamrock pride, the Green Machine took control to thump Caldwell 36-6. 78 Football The Big 0 Rolls on FRESHMAN TEAM: Row 1: J. Lucas, D. H 80 Football to a Winning Season It was a prideful group of athletes who jour- neyed to Shadyside to challenge the unbeaten Tigers. The Shamrocks completely dominated the Tigers in statistics, leading 6-0 at halftime. Two long TD passes were the downfall of the team. They collected their second TD in the 3rd quarter but failed to convert the extra points on either TD, thus falling to the Tigers 15-12. Although the Shamrocks will have 14 returning lettermen for the '78 season. Coach Hutchi- son attributes the fine '77 season to the out- standing leadership of the Senior football team members, who provided the spirit and enthusi- asm of the true Sham- rock. The hoopsters were a high- scoring combine, averaging 72 points per game against formidable opposition. The Shamrocks reached a peak mid-way through the season and recorded seven wins in the final eleven games, losing only to powerful and tournament-strong Bellaire, Buckeye Trail and Shadyside. The most heart- breaking and controversial loss was dealt to the Shamrocks by traditional rival St. C. What this year’s team lacked in size, the tallest Shamrock being 6'1 , it made up with tremendous hustle and amazing sharp-shooting ability. Although outsized in every game, the shorter Shamrocks came through a successful campaign with relentless ball-hawking and accurate shooting. With a fine nucleus of talented Juniors and accomplished Seniors, the Shamrocks provided fast- paced action that produced a winning season along with the excitement that Barnesville’s fans like to see. Bogs' Basketball 8S Wrestling r Although most area wrestling fans considered it a rebuilding season, the BHS wrestling team still showed awe- some power in posting a fine 6-4 record in dual meets. While the young wrestlers matured as the season progressed, the veteran Shamrock grapplers fared well in post-season eliminations. The Shamrock grapplers began their winning season with a hard-fought win over Bridgeport, showing fans the type of wrestling they were to see throughout the season. They continued this trend with a powerful con- quest of John Glenn. Following succes- sive losses to River, Cadiz and Bellaire, the young Shamrocks matured and soundly defeated Union Local by a 54-12 count. BHS finished the season with a roar, finishing 3rd in their own Invita- tional, 4th in the OVAC “AA-A”, 4th in the AA” Sectional, and 8th in the Dis- trict. Two wrestlers, Alan Logan and Charles '‘Chuck Moxley, emerged from the District eliminations and went on to the prestigious State tournament, where Logan placed 6th at 175 lbs. 88 Wrtrstfirig B. This wasn’t the only obstacle to overcome; the teachers went on strike, cancelling three meets in the middle of the season. Despite a losing season, the team and Barnesville High School could be proud of these representatives. At the end of the season, Kevin Logan was honored by being named “Outstanding Performer” and High Point Man.’-' Along with these honors, Kevin set a new 440 record 52:5. This is largely due to the people behind the scenes — this year’s Senrab Staff. These creative, highly imaginative people are directly responsible for shaping this year's Senrab. All modesty aside, the Senrab Staff — from the co-editors to the Sales Dept. — spent many long hours laying out and selling this year’s yearbook.
