QENRAB 1977 Bamesville School Bamesville, Ohio 2 6 8 9 It's the Great Pumpkin Festival, Charlie Brown. 11 13 14 The JVS is a school where juniors and seniors in high school are treated like young adults; a place where learning skills needed to make a living go along with developing habits and attitudes which make for a successful life. 15 Z suojjezjue jo zuture Farmers of America If you are interested in the field of agriculture, the FFA is the club for you. They held monthly meetings, sold 1300 gallons of cider at the Pump- kin Festival, sold fruit before Christmas and had a banquet in February. Like many FFA members, the soil-judging team brought home honors to BHS with a first place county trophy and, continuing on to State Competition, they were ranked in the upper ten percent of the competitors. The FFA educates you for farm management, gives you experience in the shop, and teaches leadership through parliamentary procedure. Row 1: T. Drake, S. Schlaugenhauser, O. Triplett, T. Inherst, R. They were very active performing at the Thanksgiving and Christmas programs. Several members participated in a choral workshop which was held at Oglebay Park. Susie McClure was the student director this year, and Brenda Morgan, Celia Warfield, and Carla Ellis served as accompanists. Chorus 23 The BHS band, directed by Mr. Sauva- geot, worked hard during the summer months with parades and band camp. They were busy learning drills and pre- paring music for the football games and various competitions. As football season came to an end, the band prepared for a spectacular concert season. Our band showed its dedication and enthusiasm at the pep assemblies and ball games. They were always there to give that extra touch of spirit and rhythm. Time and hard work were the key notes to a successful year. Barnesville High's Row 1: ■ j. Earliwine L. Healy P. Gallagher J. Wolfe J. Plumly R. Smith ■ L. Eberling S. Gallagher S. Miller K. Fifth period would find part of the staff working, while others spent time on their own after school. For the purpose of reducing the charge to clubs and classes for their pictures, the staff raised money by selling Shamrock notebooks and spon- soring a dance. They then became absorbed, along with former members, in their work for the community and school. They sold crafts at the Barnesville Pumpkin Festival, co-sponsored the Homecoming, held a public macrame workshop, took a field trip to the Carniegy Museum and a tour of the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, held a public service meeting and made posters and banners for the Kiwanas. An athletic banner workshop’was also held. The club headed a banquet, dance, and swim party. They made and sold spirit buttons, posters, and held a spring arts andxrafts sale. Art Club proved to be a service to the com- munity and the school, through creative and visual arts. Freshman and Sophomore Members: Row 1: D. Wells, T. Lashley, O. Tri- plet, P. New- hart, M. Giudeni Council The student council really got their show on the road at the beginning of the school year, with the campaigning and elec- tions of its officers and represent- atives. They were soon in command with new ideas and plans for the school, like the bench to be installed in the upper lobby for tired students during noon hour and their plans for a juke box in the cafeteria so we could eat to the beat. Council meetings were held during classes so no one com- plained when a meeting was scheduled. The student council, under the supervision of Mr. Nichols, has accomplished much through its selling projects, awards assem- bly, and getting it all together with the administration. Officers: K. At the Air Force Academy in Colo- rado Springs, Colorado, Susie Timmons reported 60 and 70 degree temperatures. Mean- while, back in Barnesville, the students could go bowling if they wanted to, and afterwards, to end a perfect day, they could play in the snow. Then they could go home, round up some other people, and go play in the snow. After awhile people got pretty sick of the @? snow. Barnesville - This year, more than most, a typical winter morning would begin with a stu- dent waking up, turning on his radio, and hearing those magical words that make the average day a great day: Barnesville Exempted Village Schools will be closed today. Then, not only could the average homespun All-American student go back to bed, but he would have plenty of time for exciting and fun activi- ties such as playing in the snow. Of course, one could spend his time indoors, but if he decided to do anything at all, he had to do it in the snow. Many old-timers said that this winter topped the bliz- zards of '36 and '50. To some it didn’t seem like spring would ever come. It was nice for awhile, but a person can only take so much snow. There was the question of school and what to do about the days missed. A record-breaking 22 days! The State of Ohio gave relief to ours and surrounding schools when the number of days was cut back to 160. But we still had to make up some of the days, so the school board decided to cut our Spring break by two days and another holiday was used. Natural gas curtailments caused the elementary school to be closed. Lucky for everyone the high school runs on electricity. An emergency meeting was called, and they decided that the grade school would come to the high school with us. Here's how the schedule worked: high school students and the elementary bus students went to school from 7:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Then the elementary town students came here from 12:45 to 5:15. Because of a lack of space during the morning shift, many students had class in very unusual places; for example, the locker rooms, the stage of the auditorium, the book room, and the cafeteria. 48 Special Bulletin For Further Information Turn to Page 107 Classes 49 You're Not Just Any Frosh. The past was behind us, but would never be forgotten; more importantly, the future lay ahead of us, waiting to be turned into anything we desired. As Freshmen, we encountered many hardships. Initiations into clubs made you think twice if you really wanted to join. Teachers were constantly asking us our name. We found ourselves at the bottom of the totem pole. Sleepin' on the job. Go ahead, John, he’s not looking. Band and French were new experiences for many, and the clubs helped us become a part of things. We also experienced group guidance class, which offered film strips, panel discussions, and outside speak- ers to help us adjust to high school. There's got to be a shower around here somewhere. The uniqueness of the Freshman class was displayed at the pep assemblies. Every year it seemed that Freshmen were afraid to express spirit. But this year we tried to be different, and after a couple of pep assemblies we were challenging the upperclassmen with our spirit. Look, Mom! No cavities! That’s a good joke - What's the punch line? Experience on the Freshman teams had helped to prepare us for the tougher competition with upperclassmen. Our athletes made us proud to say we were Sophomores. Another main event of the school year was the arrival of the class rings. We made the first step toward order- ing them on November 1 to be exact, and it seemed forever until they finally got here. There was our last Homecoming in which girls repre- senting our class were in the court. None of us will for- get the SENIOR football and basketball games, gradua- tion , and the last time we sang the Alma Mater as stu- dents of B.H.S. By selling Smiling Scot products we were able to raise money for our Senior Class Trip to Montreal, Canada. This was one of the last things we enjoyed as a group. Pep assemblies offered us a challenge. Without cheerleaders to represent our class, we had to try extra hard for that spirit bell, and when we finally won it, we Seniors weren’t too anxious to give it back. So the class of '77 kept the spirit bell from the cheerleaders and declared war. All of us had a few anxious moments about graduation because of all those snow days. Even though we would miss good ole B. H. S., hanging around in June was not exactly what we had in mind. It's the little things we'll miss most of all. Like sing- ing carols 'round the Christmas tree, club activities, friends that are left behind, and especially the home- work! First comes the initial nerve-racking try-outs, when you have to keep smiling even though you can’t think of a thing to smile about. And once you've made the squad, you're faced with those summer practices, uniforms, pulled muscles, those frequent dull audiences, and getting your cheers down to near perfection. Cheers can be pretty scary sometimes. Especially if you're on top. You always risk falling off and being embarrassed or hurt. Being on the bottom can be tough, too. You’re the one who gets fallen on. But you can ask any of the girls - all considered, the thrill of victory and being a part of it all makes it all worthwhile.
