Posters representing the girls’ respective “holidays” provided a beautiful background. Mrs. Timmons pre- sided over a perfect program, while Coach Thomas conducted a brief interview with each candidate. October 1st brought all the holidays together as the special night of festivities had arrived. Coming across the field, the nominees, Debbie Bohandy, Y-Teens; Elizabeth Carpenter, F.T.A.; Me- lissa Wilson, Hi-Y; Brenda Carroll, Varsity “B”;Mary Kay Maleski, Spanish Club; Rhonda Burkhart, G.A.A.; Karen Huntsman, F.F.A.; Rise Stephen, French Club; Ellen Lucas, Band; Tami Sowers, Key Club; Donna Bewley, Chorus; Beth Hilliard, Senrab; Barbara Murphy, Art Club; Vicki Rowley, F.H.A.; Sally Davies, Shamrock; and their escorts formed a colorful parade. Anxiety had mounted to a hush when Brenda Carroll was named runner-up. Succeeding her came the 1971 Homecoming Queen, Miss Tami Sowers. Present for the crowning was Miss Marcia Drake, the 1970 Homecoming Queen. However, Barnesville received its first loss to Bridgeport, 16—8. 128 Y-E-L-L ADVISOR - Mrs. Timmons B FRESHMAN SQUAD - Kris Allar, Capt.; Kathy Tripplet, Cathy Frashcr, Cindy Murphy, Nanette Jones, Kathy Gilham. The Shamrocks can be proud of the fine success they have achieved through the years. It was in 1921, 50 years ago, that football was started by teacher Sid Boyd when he brought together the first Sham- rock football team. In this the 50th year of football at BHS, Barncsville head coach Bill Thomas has succeeded in putting together another winning season with a 6-4 record. The Shamrocks got off with a great start as they over- powered John Glenn 14-0 on Barnesville’s turf. The second clash brought the Shamrocks to River as they handed the AA Champs their only loss of the season, when Barnesville made a strong second half surge to sink the Pilots 26-12. In the Shamrocks third contest, they traveled to Monroe County to take on the Woodsfield Redskins for the last time, but Barnesville didn’t let the charged up Redskins stop their winning streak as they out gained the hosts 202-7 in total yardage. The Bridgeport Bulldogs handed the Shamrocks their first loss 16-6, as dcsisive points came on key pass interceptions by the Bulldogs. Junior speedster. Jay Grear, took the opening kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown as the Shamrocks squeezed by St. Johns 12-7. Late in the game, Mike Stephen caught 1 of his 9 TD passes of the season to ice the victory for Barnesville. The Shamrocks flew past Union Local Jets 31-0 as senior halfback Jack Detling had a spectacular night scoring 3 TDs for the Red and Green. Barnesville’s defense stood out in the seventh game as they held the visiting Shenandoah Zeps to only one first down. The Shamrock offense also made it’s presence known as they scored the first three times it had the ball. Senior fullback Sam Allar chalked up two touchdowns with Jay Grear, Mike Stephen, and Sophomore Roger Milhoan, scoring one apiece. Dan Frochlich also set up two touchdowns as he intercepted two passes and blocked a punt to help the hosts back up their sixth victory accompanied by only one loss. Barnesville’s next three games turned into total disaster when, despite a tremendous comeback effort, they were defeated by St. Clairsville 36-16, and in the ninth game by visiting Cambridge 28-6. In the Shamrocks finale, 12 seniors played their last game for BHS, as it was a disappointing way to say good-bye as Shady side defeated the Shamrocks 16-12. Although Barne- sville lost its last three games. Coach Bill Thomas showed tremendous promise for next year's team. The frosh shared the Eastern Ohio Freshman League with St. C., as they posted a season with no defeats and one tie. 132 OPPONENTS BHS John Glen 0-14 River Local 12-26 Woodsfield 6-22 Bridgeport 16- 6 Bellaire St. Johns 7-12 Union Local 0-31 Shenandoah 0-34 St. Clairsville 36-12 Cambridge 28- 6 Shadyside 16-12 A. With only two Seniors Dan Froehlich and Greg Jones, and Jones being the single letter- man, the Shamrocks depended on hustle along with what little experience they had to better last year’s record. Two Sophomores, Bruce Winland and Larry Hall, plus Junior Tom Sowers filled out the starting line-up. Hall, Winland and Froehlich supplied the Shamrocks back- board strength while Sowers and Jones set things up. All together it was a more successful season, and for the young Barnesville Shamrocks the future looks bright. Once again the BHS grapplers pinned down an- other winning season under the direction of Coach Dave Kovalick and Assistant Coach John Vegelmeier. The Shamrocks matmen posted a fine 6-4 record, including several outstanding individual achievements under stiff competition by many larger schools. During the second annual Barnesville Wrestling Invitational, the Shamrocks placed 4th as 98 pound- er, Robbie Stephen shared the outstanding wrestler award when he took his weight class with ease. Senior co-captains, Frank Ferguson and Robbie Stephen both showed their abilities as they captured the coveted OVAC titles in their respective weight classes. Both were among four returning lettermen which also included Bruce Eshler and Randy Wise. Although the Shamrocks will lose seven seniors, next year should be an impressive one for the grap- plers. Also having a hand in the varsity roster were: Stewart, D. Ferguson, Healey, Plumly, Clark, Rick Clark, Detling, Shaw, Eshler, Long, Jefferis, Smith, Caldwell, and Kerry Wright.
