October Ushered In By Fall Festival Piles of fall vegetation filled the Main St. as the “Great 01’ Pumpkin” made his debut this autumn of 1970. Mr. Vernon Burkhart planned and developed Bartlesville’s First Annual Pumpkin Festival into a memorable three days with several area FFA queens participating in the event. Our hometown gal. Miss Jeanie Grear, was selected as this year’s royalty, and was crowned by the 1969 Fall Fair Queen, Mrs. Shirley Anderson Stephens. There were various displays of squash, Indian corn, and certainly pumpkins! Prizes for the largest pump- kins were awarded, and as a finale to the festivities, the various exhibits were auctioned to the bystanders. 66 67 Eerie twilight visions encircled the anxious audience as the fifteen queen candidates for the 1970 “Home- coming of the Stars” were called to model their respective wardrobes in the assembly which opened another traditional Homecoming week. The student body gathered in the new auditorium, decorated with metallic posters and various zodiac signs. A fortnight of luscious turmoil followed as our game with the Cadiz Cardinals approached. Then with the assemblage of nominees, escorts, and convertibles, the October 9th festivities were under way. Jeanie Grear, FFA; Barbara Mallarnee, Band: Marcia Drake, GAA; Judy Plumly, Spanish Club; Becky Jo Davis, Senr ab; Karen Ebeling, Chorus; Mary Lou Kaiser, Hi-Y; Denise Damsel, FTA; Connie Little, Art Club; Janet Wallace, French Club; Janie Smith, Y- Teens; Valerie Touvelle, Varsity “B”; Mindy McClure, Key Club; Helen Jane Howell, FHA; and Peggy Arick, Shamrock—came glowingly onto the field. Tension mounted across the gridiron as Miss Jeanie Grear, runner-up, stepped up, succeeded by the 1970 Home- coming Queen, Miss Marcia Drake. Shirley Anderson Stephens, 1969 Homecoming Queen, was present to crown the new queen. Termination of “Homecoming of the Stars” included a dance at the Jr. High gym- nasium which featured the famed Sceptors and the excitement from the rousing victory over the op- ponents, 34-0. p r: ' -• •■■•s' a: Cheerleaders Spark Enthusiasm Mrs. Timmons, Advisor FRESHMAN SQUAD Pam McClure, Julie Campbell, Beth Burkhart, Lu Anne Bewley, Sharon McConnel, Diane Be handy, Captain. The opening contest finalized in a setback to John Glenn despite fullback Greg Gallagher's hard running and quarter- back Dan Plumly's twelve completions. The Shamrocks quickly evened their early record on Sept. 18, when River Local visited Barnesville. End Jeff Young hauled in two Plumly aerials to drown the Pilots by a 22-13 margin. In the third clash, a sound victory over Woodsfield edged the victory column slightly ahead of the defeat department. Plumly and sophomore Jay Grear notched two touchdowns apiece, and Dick Johnson toed a field goal through the uprights to assist the cause. Rugged Bridgeport, who com- pleted an undefeated season, disappointed the Shamrock Gridders the next week as they managed four touchdowns as compared to the Shamrocks two in the battle on the Bulldogs' turf. During the following three weeks, Cadiz, Union Local, and Shenandoah succumbed successively to the fired-up Red and Green Machine. Halfbacks Tom Hunkier and Mike Woods, along with fullback Sam Allar. contributed heavily to the lopsided conquests. Mud and rain set the stage when arch-rival St. Clairsviile invaded Barnesville. The Devils tallied eight points early in the fray, and after three quarters of crushing defense, quarterback Greg Jones engineered the same sum for the Shamrocks. Cambridge brought havoc to the injury-ridden Shamrocks in the ninth game as the nightmare resulted in a 33-0 shutout. Seventeen seniors bade farewell to the Shamrock gridiron in fine style by completing a noteworthy 6-3-1 season. Shadyside was the final victim as they fell by an 8-0 reading. The basis for the betterment was ex- perience as all five starters returned along with three additional players. Seniors Dan Plumly and Steve Swallie led the Barnesville scoring attack by averaging 15 points per game. Barry Betts and Jeff Young, the two senior forwards, chipped in an average of 10 markers per contest, and the only starting junior, Greg Jones, also averaged in double figures. Plumly provided the major rebound strength, but the overall lack of height proved to be a dominant factor in the nine defeats. Matmen Earn Winning Season The wrestling program continued to gain populari- ty as Coach Kovalick directed the grapplers to a third consecutive victorious year. Competing against con- siderably larger schools, including six schools which were classified AAA, the Shamrock matmen battled to a highly commendable 6-4 record. The squad plac- ed second in the Barnesville Invitational Tournament and seventh in a field of 20 entrants at the OVAC Tourney. The six returning lettermen included co-captains Dean Wehr and Dick Johnson, lightweight standout Daryl Ward. Johnson and Ward compiled 13-3 and 14-2 records respectively, and both were Barnesville Invitational Champs. Wehr was victorious in 9 of 14 starts, and Myers earned an 8-7 mark. Winters posted a 7-2 reading and was an Invitational Champ; Cozad triumphed in 5 of 9 opportunities. Also in the start- ing line-up were Stephens, Wise, Ferguson, Reisch- man, Eshler, and Claugus.
