m 0,v SENRAB Barnesville High School Barnes ville, Ohio Volume 51 Table Of Contents Turning back through the pages of time, one will remember the 1970 school year as being ON THE MOVE. The highlight was that of moving into the new high school building during the second semester. Remembering those zippy, zany high school years, one re- calls the countless new experiences en- countered. In the year of’70 Shamrock spirit was THE GOING THING, PAGE 2. To see just WHERE THE ACTION IS in school activities, turn to PAGE 32. Backing up the action in the classrooms, of course, were THE MOTIVATORS beginning on PAGE 82. ON THE WAY UP, PAGE 94, were the ever-striving underclassmen, who watched eagerly as the Seniors were MOVING OUT, PAGE 114. With her project on visual adaptation, Ruthanne Briggs qualified for the state science fair. She is pictured here proudly shaking Governor Rhodes’ hand. Mary Murphy and Teresa Anderson had equally enriching experiences as they attended the annual Buckeye Girls’ State. As you can see here, they took everything with them but the kitch- en sink! Buckeye Boys’ State was conducted many miles away from Girls’ State much to Tom Tim- mon’s dismay. He is seen here preparing to give a report on Boys’ State. Willi the formation of the Student Court, violators of school codes were tried by fellow classmates for the first time this year. In the picture below the court was trying a member for sloppy dress. Other functions of the Council were the creation of a new school dress code, the selection of “Student of the Month,” and “Stu- dent of the Year,” and being the link between the student body and the faculty. 34 MIS Highest Honor Bestowed On Nine Seniors Based on character, scholarship, lead- ership. and service, Chapter 47 of the National Honor Society inducted five seniors in the fall ceremony. The theme for the impressive induction was “Who Is Pleased With What He Is? with the main speaker being Superintendent, Mr. Wright. The junior induction took place in the spring. At the left, three seniors are shown practicing for a skit. Above is a picture of a member ushering at one of the school functions. SEATED' Teresa Anderson, Brenda Hartley. STANDING: Larry Stephen. FT A Encouraged Teaching; Art Club, Creativity Encouragement of members to pur- sue teaching as a career was the main goal of the progressing Future Teachers of America. As the picture on the right illustrates, students were given the opportunities to gain actual teaching ex- perience in the classrooms. One of the main activities of the year was the F.T.A.’s assistance on Parent-Teacher Conference Day when the members helped guide parents to the rooms. 36 Gay splashes of color dotted the Barnesville windows during the spooky week in October when scenes depicting Halloween were entered in the window painting contest. During the year the member decorated the gym for many school functions, notably the Homecoming Assembly. Students will also re- member the artistic Christmas wreaths and the annual art fair which was held in the spring. z ROW 1: Marcia Bean, News Reporter; Mary Hasbrouck, Senior Art Advisor; Denny Giescy, Junior Art Advisor; Jill Schmitthenner, President; Barbara Murphy, Treasurer; Karen Depcw, Secretary; Randa Lucas. Members corresponded with a former B.H.S. student who was studying in France. During the Christmas season, “Bring a Torch, Jeanette Isabella,” echoed in the halls as the club carolled throughout the school. The year’s activities were closed with a banquet for the French Club members. The annual slave auction opened the Spanish Club’s festivities for the year. Following Mexican tradition, the club made a display of the manger scene at Christmas in the main hall. After weeks of planning, the Spanish Fiesta was accented by an authentic Hispanic meal and the crowning of the Spanish Club queen. On the opposite page are candids of the slave initiation, the “Desperados”, and of the club writing letters to the servicemen in Viet Nam. Clean speech, sportsmanship, scholarship, and clean living were the goals of the Hi-Y which was affiliated with the YMCA in Cambridge. As pictured above, the new members were initiated by the annual carrying of the crosses which grew sometimes to enormous sizes. The “Save the Children Federation” clothing drive was held in November, along with other worthwhile community ser- vice projects. The creation, maintenance, and extension of the high standards of Christian character throughout the home, school, and community were surely promoted through the fraternal feeling of the Hi-Y. 40 Key Club Rendered Unselfish Services A hard-working and industrious club of B.H.S. was the Key Club. Among their many projects was the pro- viding of waste containers for the school grounds; build- ing the football bonfire; selling spirit ribbons and pop; and buying a sign for the new school. Key Club members assisted their sponsoring organization, the Kiwanis Club, on Pancake Day. Much time and effort went into the production of their traditional Sweetheart Dance. Al- ways looking toward the future, the major goal of the Key Club members was to train themselves today to be the leaders of tomorrow. ROW 1: Denny Thompson. Tom Hunkier. The Doggy-Puppy Initiation of the new Y-Teen members consisted of those exact words. They were spoken to the Y-Teen officers in the halls of B.H.S. Pizza parties, Christmas parties, hikes, and service projects were among the activities of the Y-Teens. The year was highlighted with the co-sponsorship of the Talent Contest held in the spring. A Christian orientated club, the Y-Teens helped the girls grow mentally and spiritually in friendship. ROW 1: Peggy Arick, Vice-President. ROW 2: Cindy Sampson, Scrap- book; Sharon Turner, Poster. Varsity “BHonor System For Athletes A boy wearing a Varsity “B” jacket has much to be proud of. To become a member he had to earn a letter for outstanding participation in football, wrestling, track, basketball, golf, or baseball. Upon being accepted each member underwent an initiation of carrying bricks. If his arms didn't give out at the end of two weeks, he officially became a Varsity “B” member. One of the club's major projects was Parent’s Night at which they presented the football players’ parents with corsages and cigars. This volume is the result of the innumerable meetings, the taking and retaking of pictures, and the hours spent in perfecting layouts. The job was met by an energetic editorial staff, armed with many new ideas, plans, and bottles of as- pirin. From the beginning of Sep- tember, campaigns were launched by the sales and ads staff through- out the school and community. It is the staffs wish that this book has given the student body a priceless keepsake of their last year before moving into the new school build- ing. Under the direction of Mr. Richard Shoemaker, the chorus presented an unusual Christmas concert featuring a tableaux on stage. Several chorus members excelled in the district solo and ensemble contest while the ad- vanced chorus did well in the choral contest. The Homecoming weekend was charg- ed with excitement and suspense. The candidates for queen were presented to the student body at the homecoming as- sembly where psychedelic posters and flowers had converted the gym into a mod party setting. The coronation took place during half-time at the Barnesville- Union Local game. Suspense filled the air as the first runner-up, Debbie Howell, was announced. In the next breath-taking minute to the strains of “To Dream the Impossible Dream, the 1968 Homecom- ing Queen, Becky Carpenter, crowned a surprised Shirley Anderson as the 1969 Homecoming Queen.
