Bill Finch, first in Bel- mont County in the Ohio History Test, prepares for state competition with Mr. Wykle's encourage- ment. Administration, Counselors Keep Pace Mr. Wright believes the public school has the responsibility of serving all young people--the gifted, the average, and the less academ- ically talented. In order to ac- complish this, the school must employ the services of the most dedicated and wisest talents avail- able. This can only be done when there is unity of purpose between the citizens of the school district and the administration. Past support of education has been encouraging, but this is only a beginning. Continued improve- ment is a must. Mr. Bonvenuto states that our educational program today has seen vast changes since the first Senrab was published in 1919 and will con- tinue to see new horizons in the future. It has been a pleasure for me to be associated with the Barnesville school system . The faculty, student body, and community have been most cooperative in maintaining pride within its school and providing our students with the best education possible. It is our desire to con- tinue to maintain these high educa- tional standards. Mr. James Wright, School Superintendent Mr. Fred Bonvenuto in his fourth year as high school principal. Well known to B.H.S. students is the guidance counselor and athletic director, Mr. Roger Sowers. His main responsibili- ties as a counselor are assisting the stu- dents in the making of wise educational and vocational choices, and in helping the stu- dent to better understand himself. Mr. Sowers states that each year the students are becoming more receptive to the guid- ance program. As athletic director, Mr. Sowers is in charge of coordinating the total athletic program. 32 Mr. Roger Sowers, Guidance Counselor, Athletic Director. with Ever-Changing Trends Robert W. Morledge, Elementary Principal Federal funding for educational programs and the rapid changes tak- ing place in our society have created a need for innovations within our schools. During the past year Barnesville utilized approximately $50,000.00 of Federal funds for a number of worth-while programs. During this year three curricu- lum areas have been receiving at- tention from the staff so that stu- dents and teachers have enjoyed new science units, books, and supplies which reflect up-to-date objectives, content, and philosophy. All industry has some sort of product that is known and identified by the community and the nation. The High School Graduate” is the finished product of the Educational Industry , as far as the public school is concerned. This is the representative that reflects the quality of the educational factory that produced him. Therefore, we not only strive to supply the best academic program that we can, but also strive for training in good citizenship and thoughtfulness toward others. SENIORS SENIORS SENIORS Senior Class Officers (from bottom): Bill Froehlich, treasurer; Denny Hunkier, secretary; Bill Mann, vice president; Tom Claugus, president. SENIORS The Senior Class of 1969 was a class of participation, desire, and achievement. In the rank and file of past school years there has been no class that has participated more strongly in as many activities as the Class of '69. The cheerleading, chorus, band, clubs, and athletic teams were dominated by Seniors. During their participa- tion in these activities the 69ers displayed the desire which made them successful in their every endeavor. They were not content being also-rans, but made their pres- ence felt, gaining respect from both their critics and competitors. Achievement has been the watch word for the Senior Class. This has been exemplified by their fine scholastic averages, athletic records, and successful activities. This participation, desire, and achievement also makes the Class of '69 a class of promise. With the talent and desire, possessed by the members of this class, the future holds no limit as to the range or magnitude of their accomplishments. BAKE SALES! SHOE SHINES! DANCES! A loyal, energetic, Junior class has ac- complished many tasks this year, work- ing together to present the Seniors with a tremendous prom and to provide funds for their senior activities. As flippant freshmen, they were afraid of what they might expect at their new location, but, they arose to the occasion. As stalwart Sophomores, they were able to find solutions to their problems more quickly. Then as jubilant Juniors, they were happy to be wearing the ring of B.H.S., happy in their plans for the prom, and delighted to present their Junior play. Now as they look forward to being stately Seniors, they eagerly anticipate the coming year--a year of dedication to classmates and school. SOPHOMORES The Sophomore year is the time when the class begins to anticipate the responsibility of the Prom and works hard to accumulate a sizeable treasury. This was accomplished by contracting a very popular dance band, the Umbra group from St. Clairsville, to play at all four of the dances sponsored by the class during the year. Good student participa- tion resulted in several successful bake sales. Meeting the challenges in other areas, scholastically and socially, added to the prestige of the class. Cherishing the memories of this year, they look eagerly ahead to the next two years ready to measure up to new responsibilities. If many of the problems of school were not solved at least the students' grievances were aired. The Student Council met once a week under the direction of Mr. Nichols. Among its accomplishments and activities were dances, selection of student of the month, stu- dent of the year, citizen of the year, and one boy and one girl for each of the qualities-- leadership, character, service, and scholar- ship. The Student Council also wrote and paid for the Student handbook and set up a code of rules governing dress and behavior in the schools. Thus, the Student Council did its best to keep the school a peaceful, smoothly running organization. The club chose the theme ’'Time Flies with F.H.A.” and the girls have found that time really does fly when you are busy with worthwhile projects. During the year the activities included the corn husking bee, helping collect money for the Heart Fund, and Cancer Drive, pre- paring fruit baskets for the needy at Christmas, contributing money to the Salvation Army, and working on chapter and state degrees . The final big event was the Daddy banquet held in April. Shamrock: Creativity in Writing Every student anxiously awaits the En- terprise every Thursday morning during the school year. Why? Because it contains Barnesville High's own Shamrock section. The Shamrock staff, with the assistance of their advisor, Mrs. Betts, works hard to report the happenings of Barnesville High. Meeting every Monday after school the members work for at least an hour, some- times two, to compose and type the articles which will appear in that week's edition. This is a demanding but very rewarding service to the school which is greatly ap- preciated . Brent Hunt, Bill Finch, Tom Hollingsworth, and Patty Brown work hard on copy planning. Sanrab Celebrates 50th Anniversary The enormous task of filling the pages of this book faced the members of the staff last September. Deadlines swiftly approached, but each were met promptly and preparation for the next one began. Countless meetings were held where in- numerable ideas were accepted or re- jected . The sales and ads staffs launched sales campaigns throughout the school and community. Lights burned late as final copy was written and typed, pic- tures were identified, cropped, and ar- ranged, and finally it was done. The people pictured on these two pa - ges, under the superb direction of Mrs. McKenzie, have labored long hours to produce a book of memories which they hoped would please the student body, faculty, and community. Under the direc- tion of Miss Ann Gill, the class presented the comedy based on the book by Betty Mac- Donald. The setting was a newly organized chicken farm with an ambitious farmer (Bob Truex) who was attempting success in the chicken business. His city wife (Connie Long) and daughters (Cathy Howell and Tyra Hanlon) had a difficult time adjusting to this type of farm life. Here is where the trouble begins--and ends. This play would have amused anyone who has not realized the adjustment one makes from city to country living.
