See how the generations pass Like sand through Heaven's Blue Hourglass . --Vachel Lindsay TABLE OF C0NTENT9 4 administration and faculty 13 organizations 39 activities 47 athletics 57 underclassmen 81 seniors 102 senior index 105 advertisements Mr. James Wright, our superintendent, was educated at Mt. Union College, Kent State, and Toledo University. Upon graduation he became a teacher at Chagrin Falls and later the principal of Coshocton County Schools. He He then served as executive head in Fulton County, Mt. Pleasant, and Jefferson County Schools. Mr. Wright believes there is a pressing need here for special education classes and new facilities in every area. The answer. Mr. Wright feels, is money--not that money will answer all educational problems--but we must have it to develop our school. He firmly believes the opportunity will soon present itself for making our school the best in this area and one of the best in the state. James Albert Wright, superintendent Fred D. Bonvenuto, principal This year Barnesville High School greeted a new principal, Mr. Fred Bonvenuto. The stu- dents first met Mr. Bonvenuto while arranging their sched- ules prior to school's opening and found him to be a forceful man with clear-cut ideas con- cerning rules and discipline. However, his quiet and serious demeanor is tempered by a slow smile and a just and fair attitude. Mr. Bonvenuto is a native of Pennsylvania but chose to do his undergraduate work at Fair- mont State College and his graduate work at West Virginia University. He is presently working on his Doctor's Degree in Administration. As a former coach, Mr. Bonvenuto possesses a keen interest in the athletic program at BHS and indeed is a welcome addition to the administration. 4 Board of Education SEATED: W. L. Barnesville High School is proud of its Student Council, an organization which serves as an invaluable link between the students and the administration. Made up of representatives from each class, the council, by dis- cussing problems and formu- lating policy, succeeds in maintaining harmony and balance in the school. A new program was initiated this year, as each month the council chose a Student of the Month. Also, at the end of the year, they present awards to the Club of the Year and to students with outstanding character, leadership, scholarship, and service. 14 Hl-Y ROW 1: Eddie Fisher, Steve Bissell, John Johnson, Lonnie Hastings, Bill Swallie, Bill Mann, Chris Zellers, Bill Finch, Jim Craig. One of the big projects of the year was the gala New Year’s Eve dance held at the Youth Center. For this the Y-Teens and Key Club joined forces, hired a band, and succeeded in sponsoring one of the nicest events of the season. Throughout the year Senior Y-Teens indeed ful- filled its purpose of ’’realizing those ideals of personal and social living . . . and to grow in the knowledge of God. ” Senior Y-Teen Cabinet SEATED: Connie Knox, program; Janey Doan, vice-president; Roseanne Brownfield, president; Judy Hall, secretary; Vicki Brooks, treasurer. The Junior Y-Teens is a group of fresh- men and sophomore girls united by the common goals expressed in their creed. Throughout the year, the girls combine fun and fellowship with service to the sur- rounding rest homes. This year the initiation varied from the traditional Big Sister-Little Sister Hike. Instead, freshmen members wore a Y around their necks for a week and catered to the wishes of the sophomores, resulting in a true lesson in humility. This fine service club indeed holds up high ideals toward which its members can strive. 17 FTA ROW 1: Sherrie Fitzpatrick, Marcia Dietrich, Vicki Brooks, Chris Stewart, Emery Stewart, Charles Joseph, Becky Beardmore, Patty Arnold, Becky Thomas. The Future Teachers of America, founded only four years ago, is speedily becoming one of the most active organi- zations in our school. The programs at each meeting are planned to give members a preview of the teaching profession, presenting both the rewards and disappointments. This is accomplished through movies and speakers. The Future Teachers put their knowl- edge to work by helping any teacher with extra work or even teaching classes. The FTA also participates in social events. They sponsor dances; and in the spring all members put a finishing touch to a successful year with a picnic. Indeed, the FTA has an important goal --that of preparing its members for their life work. 18 FFA ROW 1: Bruce Taylor, Bob Colson, Wayne Taylor, John Moore, Eddie Miller, Tom Gibson, Bruce Sampson, Daryl Mann, Don Beck, Walter Rushin, Frank Moore. The Future Farmers of America is a national organization of boys studying vocational agriculture in high school. Working towards the development of agri- cultural leadership, cooperation, and citizenship, keeps the Bamesville FFA Chapter quite busy. This year they had many eventful activities, including owning and operating their farm. Among their memorable activities were the Corn Husking Bee, planning and presenting the Thanksgiving Program, attending State Convention, and planning the Parent-Son Banquet. Working towards a special award this year, they have concentrated on Coopera- tive Buying. Also, they participated in the Parliamentary Procedure contest and the Judging contest. The FFA is especially proud that their candidate, Miss Susie Steele, was elected the 1965 Homecoming Queen. This theme was first introduced at the Belmont County Fair in the FHA’s prize- winning booth, which received a blue ribbon. As the year progressed they had more exciting, enjoyable, and educational activities. The Corn Husking Bee, along with the Initiation Tea, Thanksgiving Program, and Family Night, won't soon be forgotten. Daddy Date Night , an annual affair, was once again a big success. On April 22-23, the Barnesville FHA had their chapter well represented at the State Con- vention in Columbus. Making money is a big problem, but the FHA solved this by selling cookbooks and sponsoring a dance. It has been a busy year for Barnes- ville's FHA Chapter. 21 CHORUS ROW Is Audrey Johnson, Becky Reed, Cindy Allar, Barbara Beck, Connie Long, Dora Drake, Jean Linville, Elaine Kaiser, Melva Carpenter, Lynne Calder, Kathy Woodward, Jill Hanse. It all paid off, however; for in December a very successful and beautiful Christmas concert was presented, with the cooperation of the Junior High Chorus and the Girls Glee Club. Do you remember their unique way of doing ’’Jingle Bells”? The new director, Mr. Richard Shoemaker, is starting a drive to build the chorus into a large, well-developed organization and feels highly en- couraged by the promise shown by his junior high group. Before school started, the Barnesville High School Marching Band began to prepare for the coming year. The new director, Mr. Terren Frenz, succeeded in having the band chosen to represent Southeastern Ohio in the Football Hall of Fame Parade held in Canton, Ohio. This parade gave the band confidence and pep for the coming football season. This year a new type of half-time show was presented relying extensively upon precision drills. A favorite show was the spectacle created by colored lights and fire batons in the darkened stadium. Increased membership and night practices all paid off as each show was truly a pattern in motion. In November the band again participated in the Wheeling Christmas Parade. The Holiday Season was climaxed by a banquet, for which the juniors provided hilarious stunts. The District Contest was the band's main objective in the winter months. Also diligent practice was held to present a concert in the spring. The banquet in honor of the senior members ended the band's busy, but very profitable year. Jerry Grubb, Rusty Wesley, Bill Finch, Tom Hines, Stanley Sells, Jerry Jones, Sandy Warrick, Karen Swallie. Membership in this organization is obtained by direct partici- pation in some dramatic production or working behind the scenes, as in make-up, lights, or prompting. The major undertaking of the Thespians each year is the production of the Inter- Class plays. This is a highly spirited contest in which each class tries for the coveted Best Play award. Trophies are also presented to the best actor and actress, providing an incentive for some of BHS's more artistically inclined stu- dents . This year the Thespians launched a drive to buy new curtains for the stage, thus adding school improvement to their worthy objectives. 26 LATIN CLUB ROW Is Tom Hollingsworth, John Campbell, Marcia Dietrich, Brenda Plumly, Chris Stewart, Pam Ball, Jody Nichols, Nan Plumly, Lenane Turner, Sue Daniels, Mike McKenzie, Pat Smith, Tom Hines, Bruce Claugus, Ken Keylor. The members enjoy promoting an appreciation of the language and the culture of the Roman people. The highlight of the Club’s activities is the Latin Banquet. At this banquet the members assume the roles of famous Romans, gods or goddesses, and dress accordingly. They enjoy games, music and a seven course meal served by the freshman slaves. A visitor to room 107 on Monday evenings would find several Coke bottles and candy wrappers strewn about, two silent type- writers, and probably a harried senior edi- tor trying to fit a twenty-one word headline into a twenty-space line. This havoc would be the aftermath of the weekly meeting of the SHAMROCK, the school newspaper staff. This staff, under the watchful eye of a senior editor and the advisor, Mr. Loren Beams, collects, organizes, and writes up the school news to be published in the ENTERPRISE each Thursday. SHAMROCK articles are always clever and accurate making paper day a highlight of each week. Senior Editors SEATED: Cindy McKenzie, Janey Doan, Diane Froehlich, Roseanne Brownfield, Mary Jo Carpenter. This was the enormous task which faced the members of the SENRAB Staff last September. The first deadline loomed ominously in the future as the members fluctuated between un- bounded enthusiasm and dark despair. It was decided from the first that the 1966 yearbook would be radically different, and, the members hoped, better than any previous one. Countless meetings were held, and slowly ideas were formulated, rejected, or accepted, and fitted into the over- all plan of the book. Thus, withthehelp and support of those pictured on these two pages and numerous others un- mentioned, and under the able direction of a new advisor, Mrs. McKenzie, you have in your hands today what we feel is a most suc- cessful and valuable book--the 1966 SENRAB. ff! The members have been able assistants to the faculty in helping present movies and other edu- cational material, which is invaluable in the learning process. The members of this club, advised by Mr. Clay, become skilled pro- jectionists and also learn the proper method to present a film. The entire school system is benefited by this fine club. 32 VARSITY ”B“ ROW 1: Joe Jewell, Dallas Adkins, Tim Powell, Bob Thompson, Bruce Claugus, Ron Schumacher, Jim Craig, Bill Kirk, Dan Hannahs, Kelly Knight, Clyde Thompson, Dan Wells. The Varsity B, Barnesville High's ath- letic honor society, is a select organiza- tion. Like any other honorary society, mem- bership is obtained by hard work, initiative, and skill, and in this case, by the winning of a varsity letter either by playing or man- aging football, basketball, wrestling, or track. Few people realize what hard work and long hours of practice go into the winning of a letter. It takes determination, spirit, and many times, just plain courage. Perhaps that is why the boys are so proud to wear their green and white varsity jackets. Even the initiation (carrying bricks yet!) is worth it. 33 6AA ROW Is Peggy Broomhall, Linda Turner, Diane Long, Sandy Cox, Patty Arnold, Sue Peddicord, Mary Reisch- man, Barbara Mann, Marcia Long, Nancy Mallemee, Joan Cox, Kathie Carpenter, Sherrie Luch. In keeping with tradition, and under the enthusiastic eye of its advisor, Mrs . Timmons, the GAA once again enjoyed a highly successful year. The Girls Athletic Association, an organization designed for the sports- minded girl, always conducts several important programs . Among these are bowling, volleyball, basketball, and softball which are especially valuable for the skill and good sports- manship they foster . GAA also is the annual sponsor of the May Day program and dance and the Home- coming event, a special success this year. A highlight of 1965 was the slumber party, always an action-packed affair with plenty of fun and food, which proved especially hilarious for the energetic GAA ers. Yes, the awards the girls received at the end of the year symbolized not only active participation in a worth- while club, but many good times as well. We Build is the motto and lofty pur- pose of the Key Club. Organized by the Kiwanis in 1953, the Key Club, through projects that are directed toward service in the school and community, strives to build leaders while building a better world. In order to keep its standards high, Key Club membership qualifications in- clude a 3.0 scholastic average anda recommendation from the principal or advisor. Each year the Club sponsors the Sweetheart Dance in February, the main social event of the winter season. This year the dance proved especially nice, with music provided by The Heard, LTD” and with eight pretty candidates vying for the title of Sweetheart Queen. 36 NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY SEATED: Dave Hilliard, Martha Atkinson, Diane Froehlich, Judy Bailey, Emery Stewart. STANDING: Marilyn Reed, Cindy McKenzie, Larry Neptune, Mary Jo Carpenter, Roseanne Brownfield, Bob Arick, Miss Deaver. Character . Scholarship. Leadership. Service . These four admirable qualities form not only the foundation of the Na- tional Honor Society but also serve as the criteria for membership. Scholastically acceptable students are voted on by the faculty and Society members, and are formally inducted in the fall and spring of each year. In February, the Society was highly honored by an invitation to officiate at a ceremony at Shenandoah High School, where a new chapter was installed . Indeed, those privileged to wear the gold pin of the National Honor Society can be justly proud! But, a late season streak of bad luck re- sulted in four losses and ended the season 4-6 . There were, however, bright spots. Thanks to the Boo- ster's Club, the stadium has been improved with the addition of new lights, new ticket booths, a new fence, and plans are being made for a new field house. Also thanks to good management by Coach Mercer, new equipment has been purchased for the team. The Shamrocks, who played a good deal of their schedule in mud up to their knees, can be commended for a well-fought season. 48 manager. The Shamrocks sparkled with promise at the beginning of the season as they won both their preview and first game. Before winning again, however, Barnesville dropped one to Shenandoah. After narrowly defeating St. Clairsville, it seemed nothing could go right for the Shamrocks. The team lost a valuable player when Richard Marmie suffered a fractured skull during the sec - ond Shenandoah game. Late in the season the team began to rally, but they lacked the momentum to continue winning. The loss of veteran Tim Powell will be felt by the team. We hope, however, that his outstanding record will be an incentive to future Barnesville cagers. 52 SCORES WE Nov. 27 Preview 31 32 Dec. 3 Beallsville 58 68 Dec. 4 Shenandoah 57 50 Dec. 10 St. Clairsville 50 52 Dec. 11 Dillonvale 68 48 Dec. 17 Woodsfield 76 45 Dec. 29 Cadiz 82 68 Jan 8 Zane Trace 60 57 Jan 14 Shadyside 52 43 Jan. 15 Shenandoah 51 42 Jan. 21 Meadow brook 80 53 Jan. 25 Union Local 57 62 Jan. 28 Beallsbille 64 85 Feb. 4 Cambridge 73 33 Feb. 5 Lakeland 60 68 Feb. 8 Dillonvale 60 57 Feb. 11 Woodsfield 74 60 Feb. 15 Union Local 63 43 Feb. 19 St. Clairsville 74 62 Feb. 23 Sectional Tourney Zane Trace 53 52 Coaches: Arthur Monahan, Charles Wykle, Roger Sowers, Loren Beans. High school, with its hectic pace and additional pressures, can be a confusing experience to a Fresh- man . But the class of 1969 has adjusted to BHS with energy and spirit. That has been shown at pep assem- blies, games, and in the classroom. Perhaps the best example of this is the deafening roar that issues from the Freshmen section during Battle Cry. Even the Seniors look startled! Altogether we Freshmen feel that we have weathered well (even Latin!) besides having enjoyed every minute! 58 Mary Ann Anderson Joe Atkinson Don Baker Sharon Berry Steve Bissell James Brooks Patty Brown Russa Burdette Lynn Calder Bonnie Campbell Becky Carpenter Bernard Carpenter Chris Carpenter Doris Carpenter Janet Carpenter Leonard Carpenter Tom Carpenter Greg Colson Steve Courim Pattie Cozad Tom Cranston Sandy Cutshaver Donald Deal Bob Detling Harley Devine Burton Doudna Bonnie Drake Dennis Eddy Jim Ferguson Bill Finch Kay Fisher Gary Fogle Tom Foreman Charles Franks Jeff Frasher Shirley Frasher Bill Froehlich Bob Froehlich Jim Garrett Diane Geiger Randy Giesey Gary Hall Patty Hall Tyra Hanlon Jill Hanse Jane Harp Wanda Harper Vicki Hartley Lonnie Hastings Calvin Hickenbottom 60 Tom Hollingsworth Larry House Cathy Howell Mary Lou Huff Dick Hughes Made Hughes Denny Hunkier Peggy Hunkier Brent Hunt David Jewell John Johnson Leland Johnson Sally Johnson Jerry Jones Herbert Kanzig Marsha Keadle Tom Kathera Paula LaCroix Roy Lamberson James Leach Joyce Leach John Little Connie Jo Long Bob Long Dana Lucas Mike Lucas 61 Freeda Mankin Bill Mann Denny Martin Donald May Mike McCort Sandra McCort Vicki McCort Randy McCracken Karen Mercer Robert Messenger Richard Neptune Rudy Neuhart Joyce Outland Chris Peddicord Brent Phillips Peggy Plumly Randy Postlethwait Jerry Price Eddie Reese Mary Reynolds Robin Ritchie Jerry Robb Ronnie Robb Maureen Sampson Gary Schafer Norma Schumacher Ralph Sellers Joe Shipe Darla Shipley Wanda Showalter Kathie Skinner 62 Carol Stephens Barbara Stottler Roy Street Bill Swallie Cheryl Swallie Becky Thomas Mary Thornton Bob Truex Kay Turner Reed Tychonski Linda Van Fossen Bruce Wade Linda Wade Tillie Wells Kathy West Ed Wheeler Jennifer Williams Tim Wilson Debbie Winland Isiah Winland Melinda Yaus Kris Zellers not pictured: Karen Burkhead Tom Claugus Roger McBride Mike Wesley Rusty Wesley 63 SOPHO MORES ' Class Officers Barbara Skinner, secretary; Charles Morrison, vice-president; Daryl Mann, treasurer; Dan Hannahs, president. Sophomores - -the in-between group - -having lost the awkwardness of freshmen but lacking the apparent nonchalance of upper-classmen, are often the forgotten class. However, the class of '68, sporting varsity squad members, club officers, (and the largest mem- bership in the school!), has made itself well known in BHS. Standing at the half-way mark of their high school careers, Sophomores ponder whether they will be, by some minor miracle and the graces of Miss Farrington and Mr. Sullivan, insufferable juniors. Well, we've arrived. After four years of not a little hard workandby no means alittle laughter, we've arrived . The beginning of the end is upon us. Soon it will be the rush of graduation, last minute details, and maybe during one quiet moment, the realization will come that it will never be the same again, that one phase is forever closed. Andoneis a little sad. Mixed with the job of escape, the exhileration of beginning The Great Adventure there is a sadness. And, this is as it should be. The beginning of the end? Well, not really. Rather, it is the beginning. 82 MARTHA JANE ATKINSON DAVID LEE AULT JUDITH ANN BAILEY PAUL ELTON BAILEY KENNETH FRANKLIN ANDERSON ROBERT LEE ARICK JOHN MARTIN ARNOLD PATRICIA SUE ARNOLD 83 VICTORIA JOAN BROOKS PEGGY LEE BROOMHALL ROSEANNE BROWNFIELD PHILIP RAY BUNFILL JOHN NELSON BUTLER DANNY RALPH CAMPBELL DONALD ROBERT CARPENTER FRANKLIN CLARK CARPENTER JAMES EDWARD CARPENTER KATHIE JEAN CARPENTER MARY JO CARPENTER BRUCE ALAN CLAUGUS ROBERT THOMAS COLSON JOAN JOYCE COX The Mad Chemists SHIRLEY KAY CUTSHAVER SHERRIE LYNN FITZPATRICK RICHARD LEE FOGLE 87 JUDITH ELAINE FRASHER PATTY JO FREEMAN DAVID EUGENE FROEHLICH DIANA KAY FROEHLICH DONNA MAE GALLAGHER JOSEPH MICHAEL GALLAGHER ROBERT MICHAEL GALLAGHER KAREN RUTH GEIGER 88 JEAN ANN GIBSON BETTY LOU GRAND! However, at this point there are probably many feel somewhat ignorant and afraid, and are casting longing glances back- toward the security and warmth of their high school days. Don't laugh. Even if you can't wait to graduate, slow down; enjoy it. It will be over soon enough. And when it is over, and you open your 1966 yearbook to reminisce, we hope that captured on each page, in every picture, are wonderful memories that will grow lovelier every year. This has been our purpose.
