xx ' Q RX .-1' ,f .- A.,--' Q--,-..-nl-Iii.-1-0' Barney delved into the past history of our Alma Mater and came up with these unusual facts about B. H. S. The high school was organized in 1874 by Joseph M. Yarnell. Classes were held in the Union Building where the iunior high now stands. Then in 1879, classes were switched to the second and third f1oors of a new central building. At this time a high school course lasted only three years- the first graduating class having only five members. But soon it became so crowded that classes were held on the third floor of the Bradfield Bulid- ing. In the fall of 1906, it was possible to move into the new high school building, the present home of the Red and Green. Thus the school was expanded to cover an entire block. Even now the construction of a new gym is expanding the school capacities. Our school song was written by W. C. Jordan-once himself a principal of B. H. S. The title of the tune is Bring Home the Wagon. While looking through the old Senrab, Barney found the past of the school bell. Here we quote what the Baltimore American had to say about it in 1879: The bell was made in Baltimore at the celebrated McShane Bell foundry and was sent by this company to the Paris exposition in 1878 to compete with the bells of foreign manufacture, and has the distinction of being the first Ameri- can-made bell of its kind to be sent abroad for that purpose. It received the highest award and was rung daily by the French guards at the closing hours of the exposition. It may, therefore, be regarded as one of the best bells in the world. Upon its return to America in 1879, it was shipped to Barnes- ville to be placed upon a very large public school building. 4

Bnaacl ' Barney was very much impressed by the importance of the work done by the Board of Education. Among its duties are: selecting teachers and other employees, determining salaries, and issuing vacations. Through its tireless efforts the construction of the new gym- nasium was begun. Many hours were spent purchasing the equipment needed. Barney is looking forward to coming back next year to see the finished product. The Board was kept busy during the summer with plans for the remodeling of the Home Economics Department and moving the principal's office upstairs. New lockers were being installed when the students returned in the fall. The Board re-elected Dr. Harvey Murphy as president, Lewis Watt as vice-president, and Henry Fiechter as clerk. phy, Lewis Watt. Standing-William Kearns, Foster Gasper Henry Fiechter.
