During these 20 years Mr. B has taught: 0 0 xx ' Q RX .-1' ,f .- A.,--' Q--,-..-nl-Iii.-1-0' Barney delved into the past history of our Alma Mater and came up with these unusual facts about B. H. S. The high school was organized in 1874 by Joseph M. Yarnell. Classes were held in the Union Building where the iunior high now stands. Then in 1879, classes were switched to the second and third f1oors of a new central building. At this time a high school course lasted only three years- the first graduating class having only five members. But soon it became so crowded that classes were held on the third floor of the Bradfield Bulid- ing. In the fall of 1906, it was possible to move into the new high school building, the present home of the Red and Green. Thus the school was expanded to cover an entire block. Even now the construction of a new gym is expanding the school capacities. Our school song was written by W. C. Jordan-once himself a principal of B. H. S. The title of the tune is Bring Home the Wagon. While looking through the old Senrab, Barney found the past of the school bell. Here we quote what the Baltimore American had to say about it in 1879: The bell was made in Baltimore at the celebrated McShane Bell foundry and was sent by this company to the Paris exposition in 1878 to compete with the bells of foreign manufacture, and has the distinction of being the first Ameri- can-made bell of its kind to be sent abroad for that purpose. It received the highest award and was rung daily by the French guards at the closing hours of the exposition. It may, therefore, be regarded as one of the best bells in the world. Upon its return to America in 1879, it was shipped to Barnes- ville to be placed upon a very large public school building. 4 22:2 9 3 X X N X x x XX Q X IL X x Y Q .,1.:.:::..: N .4 Egzfif5325212.Zfj'5.-:-::f.:...,- EEEESEEZEZEEQS?.,f5iEiE253:::. :5?k'-:::,E- -Q.. 5 -' :E:r::E:1::-V:3:5E3Q3QgSfEQ5QE::X 2- -' Q Ivy 'kgs TT:-:-. Among its duties are: selecting teachers and other employees, determining salaries, and issuing vacations. Through its tireless efforts the construction of the new gym- nasium was begun. Many hours were spent purchasing the equipment needed. Barney is looking forward to coming back next year to see the finished product. The Board was kept busy during the summer with plans for the remodeling of the Home Economics Department and moving the principal's office upstairs. New lockers were being installed when the students returned in the fall. The Board re-elected Dr. Harvey Murphy as president, Lewis Watt as vice-president, and Henry Fiechter as clerk. phy, Lewis Watt. Standing-William Kearns, Foster Gasper Henry Fiechter. Seated-Gibson Bradfield, Dr. H. H. Mur- Dear Friends, lam having so much fun at B. H. S. l first met the Superintendent, Mr. Shepherd. I liked him immediately, as everyone does, for his good humor and his ability to run the school smoothly. Next came his right-hand man Mr. Shelby, the B. H. S. Principal. Things are going so well, there must not be much difiference between a bas- ketball coach and Principal-it's all team work. Among my acquaintances is Mr. Berryhill. Between the sounds of sour band notes and flat tires on the Driv- er's car, it is a wonder that his smile doesn't wear oFf. Miss Bloss spends some time in making girl athletes, and the rest in making the government known to brilliant I?l Seniors. My vision was obstructed by broad shoulders topped with red hair. This l learned was Coach Davis whose duties are to put Barnesville on the map with sports. Not only is Miss Deaver back of the Shamrock in the Enterprise, but she also teaches English Literature, American Literature, World Geography, and how to have a sense of humor. Delicious smells led me to the new Home Economics rooms. Miss Gibson, Home Economics Teacher, convinced me cooking and sewing could be fun. JACK BERRYHILL MARY IDA BLOSS B S In Ed M A A.B. Ed., University of Pittsburgh At the central oftice I met Mrs. Gill, the school secretary. I was posi- tively amazed at the amount of work she completed each day. Of course while ioining in the activities, I decided to try out for one of the class plays. But Mrs. Goforth ,finding my voice a little gruff , suggested that I attend one of her Public Speaking or English classes. Maybe l'll have a better chance next year. Since being the outdoor type is my specialty, I went to see Mr. Kaiser, the Vo-Ag instructor. He teaches the Ag boys how to run a farm. I looked up Mr. Hobensack to help me with my income tax. I learned a lot in his business training class and bookkeeping classes. I stopped in Room 2 to see how the Senrab was coming along. Mrs. Leach was there writing a lot of wavy lines which didn't make much sense to me. Not only does she teach shorthand, but also typing. I think she did a fine iob in supervising the publication of this yearbook. Don't you? I found Miss McClung in the library dusting books. She seemed a little startled to see me and said Que es esto? Soy loco? Besides teaching Spanish and English, she is head li- brarian. If you ever develop a temperature as I once did, iust go see Mrs. Matthews, the school nurse. She'll fix you up in a iifify. It seemed that every time I pass the oFfice I see Mr. Nicholson, assistant principal, writing out excuses. He teaches General Science, Plane Geometry, General Math, and Algebra. KATHRYN S, Glll. ' O. E. NICHOLSON B.S. Salem College To brush up on my Latin, I went to see Mrs. Shepherd. Not only does she teach Latin, but also General English, Sophomore English and Civics. Mr. Smarto's Sociology and Commercial Problems classes were very educational, but I enjoyed his journeys into the mysteries of American and World History much better. I heard sawing and hammering and found Mr. Squibb instructing some boys on how to repair this or that. He showed me how not to cut my paw. Out in the hall Mr. Thomas was struggling with a slide rule. Besides teaching General Sci- ence, Physics, and Advanced Math., he is also Principal of the grade school. I walked into the Biology room and got the shock of my life. That nice Mr. War- field, who has an American History class, was cutting up a frog. I heard the sound of an explosion and rushed out to find an even greater shock. The General Science, Chemistry teacher, and orchestra director, Mr. Webster had lit a match too close to a hydrogen generator. To relax my nervous system I traveled to the cafeteria where I found the music teacher, Miss Whitlatch directing the B. H. S. Chorus in a beautiful number. My ears found it hard to leave the cafeteria, but my eyes led me to the gym where I saw Miss Van Osdol, the art teacher, painting a stage setting. After meeting all these nice teachers I can well understand why the Barnes- ville students enjoy going to school so much. I really am enjoying my stay here. And guess what! The Senrab Staff is using my visit as their theme this year. That meansIWIbeappeadngthroughoutthebook Loads of bear hugs BARNEY ALMA SHEPHERD FRANCIS SMARTO D. B. SQUIBB LOUIS W. Typical Seniors! 30 Barney was greatly amazed when he saw the amount of time and efTort that the members of the Senrab staff put into the production of this yearbook. The co-editors, Jenny Leach and Car- olyn Watt, began the year by giving people their respective assignments. As soon as the theme and cover were picked, Robert Brock, art editor, started the task of drawing pictures. In Novem- ber the business manager, Ronnie Friday, opened the Senrab Sales and his able assistants, Bill Butler, Phoebe Chetty, and Anita Turner began visiting the local businessmen for advertise- ments. Jimmy Oyler, photographer, started tak- ing pictures right away. The class reporters: Joan Bundy, Patricia Rhodes, Gwen Shepherd, and Soniia McGlumphy started gluing pictures and writing up their classes. The activities writers: Judy Ebeling, Delores Brown, Robert McFarland, and Kenneth Fowler began their tedious assign- ments of writing about organiations and sports. The typists, Lois Rine and Sally Grier, stayed many nights to help make this yearbook possible. Mrs. Virginia Leach, the advisor, deserves a huge vote of thanks for the help she gave the staff. On March T5 the entire Senrab went to press. The books were completed and ready to hand out in May. The Senrab staff celebrated a year ot headaches and rewards. They joined the Shamrock Stat? in the annual Journalistic picnic in May. First row: Joan Bundy, Phoebe Chetty, Delores Brown, Jcnny leach, Carolyn Watt, Soniia McGlumphy, Sally Grier, Gwen Shepherd. Experi- encing a slow start, the Davis-coached quintet won only three of its first nine games, but in their last eleven encounters, the Shamrocks capped eightvictories. First on the schedule were Belmont and Bethesda, who proved to be easy victims of the Shamrocks. Barnesville's next five games were against the top teams in this area: Cambridge, Bellaire, Bridgeport, and Woodsfield. Bellaire scored heavily in winning twice over the Sham- rocks and Cambridge's tall quintet also won eas- ily, but Woodsfield and Bridgeport had quite a bit of difficulty in downing Barnesville. Against Cadiz, the Shamrocks returned to the victory column, but St .Clairsville bettered them by 4 points. B.H.S. then hit a three game winning streak by handily defeating Newcomerstown, Bethesda, and the Adeno Golden Wave. After bowing to a hot-shooting Dillonvale five, the Shamrocks once more hit their stride as they totalled 95 against Belmont and then easily disposed of Adeno, Powhatan, and Cadiz. In a heart-stopper, the Woodsfield Redskins went two overtime periods to whip the battling Shamrocks by a single point. The Red and Green Cagers closed out the season by losing to Cambridge's rangy Bobcats, and then rallying to nip St, Clairsville in the sea- son's finale. In the first round of tournament play at Til- tonsville, Barnesville drew Bellaire St. Johns as its opponent. After playing on nearly even terms in the first half, St. Johns broke loose with a third quarter point barrage that iced the game. In the final stanza, the Shamrocks staged a brilliant comeback, but the rally fell short and St. Johns triumphed 62-55. Basketball Schedule 1952-1953 B.H.S. Barney found all the athletic minded girls of B.H.S. belonged to a club which helped to further their hopes and abilities. This club was the Girls Athletic Association or the G.A,A. The G.A.A. rnet in the spring and chose girls who were capable to be their omcers. These girls handled the activities of the club and planned the G. A. A. schedule. The girls in the G. A.
