JV Baseball Thus year s V ball club showed a marked rmprose ment compared to last season s team Gerald Davrs was the coach for the first two games agarnst Trrmty and Rn erdale Mr Dans was called to take ow er the Varslty for Coach Lud Bock who then managed the V rn a vunnmg game vu nth Freldston The remammg SIX games of the season were coached by capable Chrrs Fxore In the fourth game agamst McBurney the V romped to an 8 3 vrctory The next opponent a tough Trlnrty squad edged out the Lrttle Bears m a 7 6 thrxller By thus trme the startmg lrneup had been well establlshed The battery conslsted of Joel Blum prtcher w1th Peter Hecht hrs recelver Larry Barnett covered first The strength was mamtamed by ohn Franco at second and Sam Ketrve at shortstop At the hot corner was Paul Hauser The outfxeld was composed of Larry Alpert Ed Gentlle and Mlke Conrad who played left center and rlght fields respectrvely On May 7 the V encountered a well seasoned Manhattan Prep team The Bear unlors started off well and ended lrkewlse by coppmg the game 6 5 At the follovung game Horace Mann was defeated 5 3 Four days later on May 14 the team was agarn badly beaten by Rrverdale thrs trme by a score of 17 2 The next and final game of the season was wlth Fleldston The Bears sent sew en men across the plate but could not match Freldston s ten Although the team s record was 4 wrns 5 losses a great deal of promising talent was shown for future squads In the battmg department Ed Gentxle held a 600 average the hnghest on the team Behmd hmm were Larry Barnett with 500 and Mike Conrad with 450 Much credrt goes to Zxrke Lester Rosenblum and Koppel who served as managers durmg the season JV BASEBALL Front Rau. left to rrgbt P Hecht R Lester E Gentlle L Alpert J Franco Second Row F Saffir M Conrad P Hauser S Ketrve L Barnett J Mano .UA X ,I O O ' 'J. . Sixteen of the thirty-six boys in the class went out for the squad this year. In the preliminary practices the team was shaping up very well under the expert coaching of experienced Mickey McCann. This has been Mr. McCann s third consecu- tive year as Frosh Baseball coach. The team's schedule included such rivals as Engle- wood, Horace Mann Ctwicej, Riverdale Ctwicej, and Columbia Grammar. The Freshmen lineup was bas- ically as follows. jeffrey Berkowitz and Bob Reggio took care of the pitching chores in good form. When Berkowitz pitched, Reggio took another position in the outfield. Bruce Bain handled catching, with Shoren- stein as his number one sub. At first base there was the dependable Bob Katz. Playing the keystone with a good bit of grace was Dave Schneider. An excellent prospect for future varsity teams was shortstop johnny O Grady. Third base was played by Berkowitz when he did not pitch. The outfield consisted of three heavy hitters, Ian I-lerschaft, oel Banilower, and Steve erome. Other boys who saw a lot of action were Tom Shoe- smith, George Thunhorst, Lawrence I-lausen, Robert Conklin, Mel Colby, and Gary Berger. This year's team showed that Barnard has a bright future as far as Baseball is concerned. Although the record was not as good as it might have been, all games were very close contests with Frosh Nine playing hard all the way.
