Huh-Q H5110-f TS ,d Captam Cliff Klembaum and Flrst Man Sklp Hartman Garber lost In the first singles Sklp Hartman went down to defeat nn a four hour marathon The end result was a 3 2 wm for Fneldston Collegiate and McBurney were the next vlctxms as the Bears won 3 2 and 5 0 respectively May 6 howes er saw an undermanned Barnard team bow to a strong Rn erdale seven by a 3 2 score Except for a crushmg 5 O defeat by powerful Trmxty Barnard easily copped their last four out of five matches against Locust Valley Columbia Grammar Bronx Scnence and Concordia The Bears were runners up ln the M A A P S league with a 4 1 record Extra mention goes to thxrd man Al Waksman second man Cliff Klexnbaum and first man Sluppy Hartman whose outstanding play and tlmely uctorles saved many a match Varsity Track VARSITY TRACK The cxndermen of 1957 were led by the fine coach 1ng of Al Jacobsen Hampered by lack of depth the tracksters had a losnng record However the won lost figures are not a true representation of the team s sp1r1t and enthusrasm The wing footed athletes faced many obstacles before and durmg the runnnng season First of all April s wet and cold weather made practice xmpossnble Secondly ln the middle of the season the star 880 man Norman Uretsky became Ill and was unable to partncn pate m a number of encounters When Norm recovered long legged mnlcr Bruce Carnase hurt his shms and could not run ln the last few meets Without a doubt the track team was the uctnm of bad luck Those on the team w ho recen cd Varsity letters were Co captains Barry Wallenstenn and Arnold Cohen Norm Uretslty Bruce Carnase Bob Llchtenstern Steve boldberg Neal Mayer and Manager Roger Zeeman There were some who gawe the sport a great deal of effort but were not experienced enough to recene the Varsity letter The followmg received mmor letters Stu Locker Bob Petty Bob Koch Pat Mullane Wrllxam O Connell and Steve Remhexmer Barry Wallensteln led the team in scormg w1th a tcllmg total of forty two points follow ed by Norm Uretslty Bruce Carnase Arnold Cohen and Neal Mayer On Aprnl 23 the Bears met I'1eldston This year they bowed to the speed of the strong Fxeldston squad The outstanding cunt of the afternoon was the half mule run It was close bctwccn Norm Urctsky and a Fleldstoman Norm snapped the tape Inches m front of his opposition The other notable events of the day were the mile in which Bruce Carnase hmshed second and the quarter mile in whlch Barry Wallcnstcxn was mched out of first place ' 9 4 - ' , 1 -ff. Varsity Tennis Barnard 4 Barnard 3 Barnard 2 Barnard 5 Barnard 5 Barnard 2 Barnard 4 Barnard 0 Barnard 3 Barnard 3 Barnard 5 GAME SUMMARY r 'Loyola 1 Poly Prep 2 'Fieldston 3 'Collegiate 2 'McBurney 0 Riverdale 3 'Locust Valley 1 Trinity 5 Bronx Science 2 Columbia Grammar 2 'League Game Concordia 0 Led by Skip Hartman, Captain Cliff Kleinbaum, and Coach Bob Kelton, the Bears completed one of their most successful net campaigns in recent years- recording 8 wins against 3 losses. Alan Waksman, Paul Sapounakis, Richie Ruster, and john Garber rounded out thc first six positions, while Chester Rosen, Elliot Harap, .nd Marty Weinstein shared the seventh spot. On April 11, starting the season on the right foot, the team defeated Loyola 4-1. Next to fall was Poly Prep, close match with the Bears winning 5-2. Then came the big match against Fieldston with the league title probably at stake, Due to the absence of a man, Barnard forfeited one of the singles maches, which proved to be costly. Although we captured one of the singles matches QKleinbaumj and first doubles Qwaks- man-Sapounakisj, second doubles of Ruster and

The major excitement of the season was the week- Cfld trip to Pennsylvania for the Penn relays. A chosen group of six team members represented Barnard in the mile relay. The team ran in the order of: NX'allen- stein, Mayer, Cohen. Carnase. The two subs were Mullane and Goldberg. Although lfretsky was sick and could not run anchor for the Bears the team finished fifth out of eight. Another point worth mentioning is the meet with Salesian on May seventh. Since Barnard's weakness lay in the field events, it lost a close meet. The quarter mile was won by XY'allenstein. Arnold Cohen took first in the half mile. The mile saw Pat Mullane victorious. Barry XX'allenstein also took second in the 100 and 200 yard dashes. A relay team of Mayer, Cohen, Carnase, XY'allenstein snapped the final tape. Here are a few flashes of individual accomplish- ments: Norm Lfretsky broke the half mile record ofthe school with a time of 2 minutes 11 seconds. Barry XX'allenstein came within one-tenth of a second from breaking the record for the 100 yard dash, and two- tenths of a second from breaking the 220 dash record. The team could be said to be strong in individual potential and spirit. Since it contains many under- graduates, great things can be seen for the future cindermen at Barnard. VARSITY TRACK Frou!
