Vic Stone, a fiery junior, was at third base. He showed great stick ability and at times, sparkled with the glove. The Bears had Pete Mantzaris in center, Fred Horn in right, and Mike Lesser in left. These three boys provided the power in the batting order and were exceptional Hy chasers. Sophomore Jay Goldblatt did an amazing job behind the plate for the Bears and, time and again, hit in the clutch. Others on the squad who saw service were Johnny Meltzer, Bill Bonnell, Irwin Sirota, and Marty Seelig. jahrmarkt was on the hill as the Bears opened up against Riverdale. Both teams ex- changed early runs, and, with the Bears ahead 5-4 in the fifth, the roof fell in. Four Indian walks, a triple to left center, plus three Barnard errors gave the Big Red eight runs and a final win of 13-8. jahrmarkt came back strong to pitch a beauty in a 4-1 win over McBurney, as Franco supplied the hitting punch. Mike again pitched well in a 4-3 win over Fieldston. The Bears took advantage of their great speed on the base paths to score 4 runs in the first two innings. With the M.A.A.P.S. crown in sight, Barnard traveled to Woodmere, only to be stopped cold by lanky Dick Zielter, the league's best pitcher. Giving up only two hits, he downed Mike Jahrmarkt and the Bears wp-f'l' My 55.1 . Q1
