Tl-IEI936BARNARDBRIC The Middle School History HE success of high schools depends largely on what the elementary grades ak rj! have subscribed in scholastic work, athletics, and social and moral training. The contribution of the Barnard Middle and Lower Schools to the Barnard High School has been of inestimable value in the past few years, without l. , 4 Aoi 3.31 l doubt of greater value than ever before, and that this contribution is to be greatly enhanced is attested by the splendid work being done by the personnel, and the ex- cellent character of the student body. Along the scholastic line the work of Miss Weed and her associates needs no comment. Each year the work in all the grades is so planned that the boys are ready, when they reach the Seventh and Eighth Grades, to take the New York State Regents Examinations. And the fact that over ninety percent of the candidates have qualified for the preliminary certihcates-the regular diploma awarded for a clean record-speaks for itself. In athletic work the boys are trained in all sports. Mr. Jardine, physical director, prepares a compulsory program for each boy each year, made up of corrective exercises, game sports, and outdoor play. The regularly organized teams meet teams of other schools, and Barnard has completed all of her schedules with marked success. Other activities include a dramatic performance each year. Under the direction of Mrs. james E. Ridgway the play, H.M.S. Pinafore was presented very successfully. Then also each class is a social organ in itself, holding regular meetings under its own ofiicers, debating on leading subjects with other classes, and meeting socially at class parties and entertainments. When boys pass through such training they are ready, when the time comes to enter the High School, fitted entirely for the more arduous work of future years.
