MORTARBOARD BARNARD COLLEGE COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY VOLUME 94 MCMLXXXVIII NEW YORK CITY ELLEN V. FUTTER PRESIDENT, BARNARD COLLEGE 2 To the Members of the Class of 1988: You leave Barnard as the College prepares to enter its second century. When you return as alumnae, your first reunion will mark the College ' s hundredth birthday! Your college years marked a time of important changes in academic and campus life — new programs such as the Freshman Seminars and Quantitative Reasoning, a renovated Mcintosh student center, and the building of the new dormitory. You are except ionally gifted and energetic young women, and we as a nation and a world need and welcome your ideas and involvement. We have every confidence that you, particularly because you are Barnard women, will go out into the world and make important contributions to its betterment in the years ahead. As you pursue your individual lives and professional interests, we hope that you remember Barnard fondly and remain involved and informed alumnae. Most importantly, we wish you lives that are full and satisfying in a world of peace. With best wishes, Sincerely, Ellen V. Of course you could absquatulate Or stay and be quite profligate Or maybe super-erogate To earn your baccalaureate. But you will not capitulate For reasons so inadequate; You all can ratiocinate With talent quite inordinate! And you did not matriculate In order to procrastinate. Equivocate, tergiversate. Or even to funambulate! Allow me to congratulate A group so un-degenerate. Four Mays from now we ' ll celebrate The peerless class of ' 88! I was right! You are peerless — you who began at Barnard in 1984, and you who have come into the class since, all of you who are graduating just before our Centennial Year. You have made a difference here, and you will do so again, each of you in her own sphere. We shall welcome you whenever you return, and we expect to hear from you often. Affectionately, Barbara S. Schmitter JOSTENS
