To the Members of the Class of 1987: Just as the College breaks ground for the new dormitory you, the Class of 1987, prepare to explore new territory and face new challenges. Since the Fall of 1983, the vitality and enthusiasm of your class has been an important part of the fabric and community of Barnard. Your years here have coincided with exciting changes at the College: new academic programs such as the Freshman Seminars, the Quantitative Reasoning Program, and the introduction of the Centennial Scholars Program; the Barnard Columbia intercollegiate athletics program and dining exchange; and more opportunities to explore the vast resorces of New York City through internships and the Urban New York Program. And perhaps most exciting, you have witnessed the beginning of the new dormitory. Upon its completion, Barnard will be able to offer college residence to any student who wishes it — a fact that your class can surely appreciate! You are bright, savvy, talented women, and these are exciting times for women. You will have an opportunity to lend your energy and intellect to a vast array of important issues in this world. Whatever your interests may be research, medicine, artistic endeavors, politics, public service — be involved. Don ' t be passive; stand up for what you believe in; be willing to take risks. I am confident that in the years ahead each of you will find that your own powerful intellect and your Barnard education will serve you well as you seek to make the world a better place. We have enormous confidence in you — in what you will achieve and in the difference you will make to society. You can be certain that we will be here to cheer you on and we will always welcome you back. We hope you will keep in touch with us and continue the tradition of alumnae involvement with Barnard. Most of all. we wish you individual lives that are full and gratifying, and that occur in a world of peace. With all best wishes. Sincerely, Ellen V. Futter
