H€IPTaVIPIB€aVIPID BARNARD COLLEGE COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY B n RD college ARCHIVES i VOLUME 93 MCMLXXXVII NEW YORK CITY ELLEN V. FUTTER PRESIDENT, BARNARD COLLEGE To the Members of the Class of 1987: Just as the College breaks ground for the new dormitory you, the Class of 1987, prepare to explore new territory and face new challenges. Since the Fall of 1983, the vitality and enthusiasm of your class has been an important part of the fabric and community of Barnard. Your years here have coincided with exciting changes at the College: new academic programs such as the Freshman Seminars, the Quantitative Reasoning Program, and the introduction of the Centennial Scholars Program; the Barnard Columbia intercollegiate athletics program and dining exchange; and more opportunities to explore the vast resorces of New York City through internships and the Urban New York Program. And perhaps most exciting, you have witnessed the beginning of the new dormitory. Upon its completion, Barnard will be able to offer college residence to any student who wishes it — a fact that your class can surely appreciate! You are bright, savvy, talented women, and these are exciting times for women. You will have an opportunity to lend your energy and intellect to a vast array of important issues in this world. Whatever your interests may be research, medicine, artistic endeavors, politics, public service — be involved. Don ' t be passive; stand up for what you believe in; be willing to take risks. I am confident that in the years ahead each of you will find that your own powerful intellect and your Barnard education will serve you well as you seek to make the world a better place. We have enormous confidence in you — in what you will achieve and in the difference you will make to society. You can be certain that we will be here to cheer you on and we will always welcome you back. We hope you will keep in touch with us and continue the tradition of alumnae involvement with Barnard. Most of all. we wish you individual lives that are full and gratifying, and that occur in a world of peace. With all best wishes. Sincerely, Ellen V. YOUTZ Richard P. Youtz began working in the Barnard Psychology department in 1937. After serving in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War Two (1942-1946), he returned to Barnard as chairperson of the department. From 1946-1974 he constructed much of what is presently the program of study for Barnard psychology students. Professor Youtz was a distinguished experimental psychologist; his studies on extinction and spontaneous recovery are still used and discussed in laboratory courses in most of his work at Barnard. He implemented the first course for independent research projects in the psychology department (the second in the college), as well as seven laboratory courses in various fields of psychology. He, in large part, developed a department that was strongly grounded in scientific methodology. His approach as a scientist permeated other areas of Barnard College as well. As a member of the faculty. Professor Youtz was always prepared with objective data to support his arguments. He wanted to insure that all decisions for the Barnard curriculm were founded on a rational analysis of information. When the college was discussing the science requirement and the eligibility of psychol- ogy courses to fulfill it, Professor Youtz provided descriptions of these laboratory courses, as well as their content. His contribution to Barnard, however, as an advisor and mentor is of equal importance. As an advisor, he was always patient and sympathetic — and always produced a rational solution to one ' s problems. In the Dean of Studies Office (1974-1986), he was quick to show students the most efficient ways of studying and preparing for exams. The success of many Barnard students is in large part the result of his constant support and encouragement. Professor Youtz ' s interest and concern for students truly inspired his advisees, and helped a great many freshmen adjust to Barnard ' s rigorous acade mic environment. As Director of the Resumed Education Program, he frequently altered his own schedule to accomodate those students who could only speak to him in the evening. He had an enormous amount of energy and dedication: he sincerely put forth the greatest effort for the success of Barnard students. The Barnard community owes a great deal to his intellect, enthusiasm and kindness. For this reason we dedicate the Faculty Section of the 1987 Mortarboard to Prof. Richard P. Youtz. As the school progresses to an almost entirely residential population, the need for housing has become steadily become a more crucial problem. Due to this arising problem, a task force was initially established in the early 80 ' s to discuss and submit a report on the need for a new dormitory facility. It was not until 1986. when funds became available that the New Dormitory Advisory Committee was established. This committee began in the spring to update the original report and formulate a program for the new Desidence Hall, now that the state loan had been established for its construction. This new committee was chaired by (Sigmund Ginsberg, Vice President for Financial Affairs. Dean Schmitter and Dean Gatch also assisted. There were representatives from the administration, faculty, alumni and students. All concerns were expressed and ELLEN FUTLER AND JAMES POLSHEK written in a proposed program presented to the competing architects. In (September James (Stuart Polshek ' s architectural firm was chosen and the site was established in October, to be the completion of the BHD quadrangle. This site was met with a number of grievances which were presented by (Students Against the Dormitory but no further action was taken. Positive reaction was also seen at the Convocation, where the plans for the new Qesidence Hall were shown to the Barnard community. Of the many features which the writte n program offered were: a new cafe, both suite and floor style living, better access for mibility in the BHP complex, kitchens on all floors and a games room, all of which will be included in the Qesidence Hall. Yet the most distinctive feature, is the tower on the Northeast corner which will be a new landmark in the Heights. Construction of the New Desidence Hall will begin in April 1987 and completion is expected for (September 1988 or (September 1989 at the latest. The committee will continue to meet to update itself and discuss any problems. Just as construction of Deid, Hewitt. Mcintosh and Altschul have been special moments in the history of the college, the new Desidence Hall will also leave its statement, hopefully a posi- tive one. Susan Hollander. Dear Class of ' 87, On the first day of your Freshman Orientation, I announced that an administrative inspiration had directed me to compose a rhyme in your honor that could also serve for your graduation. Well I did it, I saved it.and I found it again! Here it is — for you who began your college years here and for you who have joined the class along the way: A class came to Barnard in eighty-three With superior credentials, we all agree. They sure had elan. Though in fact they began In conditions of dampening humidity! Of sterner stuff than most they were made; And there was no doubt that they ' d make the grade. Though their year, eighty-seven. Rhymed nicely with heaven. They were surely not angels, but I wouldn ' t trade! So— They ' re our 98th class, both brilliant and fair. Resilient and firm and so debonair; They earned their degrees In sweat band and T ' s, And soon they will make a real difference out there! How prophetic can a dean be? You have been a wonderful class, and you will, without a doubt make a positive difference to your world. We shall miss you and shall count on you to stay in touch and to come back often. Affectionately, Barbara S. Schmitter
