To the Members of the Class of 1986: Every class is special, and so it is with the Class of 1986. Your years here at Barnard have coincided with exciting changes at the College: new academic programs such as the Freshman Seminars, the Quantitative Reasoning Pro- gram, and the introduction of the Centennial Scholars Program; the opening of a new dormitory at 49 Claremont Avenue; the Barnard-Columbia intercollegiate athletics program and dining exchange; and more opportunities to ex- plore the vast resources which New York City offers through internships and the Urban New York Program. Your in- terests, enthusiasm and diversity have served as important catalysts for these and other changes that have enriched Barnard in many ways. As you go forward with your own lives, I hope that you will think about the world that you are being graduated in- to — a world in which you will have an opportunity to lend your considerable talent and intellect to a vast array of important issues; reducing the risk of war; seeking new solutions to famine and any number of natural and medical threats to mankind, ad dressing such evils as terrorism throughout the so-called civilized world, and, close to home, becoming involved in your communities, in politics and public service. For some, involvement may be research; for others it may be active participation in diplomatic affairs or cultural and artistic endeavors. Whatever it is, let it not be passive. Now more than ever before, these are exciting times for women. Leadership positions in many aspects of profes- sional life await young women like you. In the years ahead, you may be assured that your own powerful intellect and your Barnard education will serve you well as you seek to make the world a better place. They will aid you as well, as you endeavor to lead lives that are full and personally satisfying. We have enormous confidence in you — in what you will accomplish personally and in what you will give to socie- ty. You can be certain that we will be here to encourage you and cheer you on — and we hope that you will maintain your interest in Barnard. With all best wishes. Sincerely, Ellen V. Futter
