OF BARNARD COLLEGE Millicent Mcintosh Rosemary Park Martha Peterson 1947-1962 1963-1967 1967-1975 Most colleges start with something tangible: a gift of buildings, an endowment, or at least a tract of land. Barnard College started with nothing except that most irresistible and indestructable thing, an idea. That description, taken from Marian Churchill White ' s A History of Barnard College, captures the spirit of Barnard ' s special mission and identity. In 1889, Frederick A. P. Barnard turned his dream of equal education for women into a reality. Now, nearly one hundred years later, you and I are the benefactors of that dream. Of course, buildings, an endowment and a tract of land have become very much a part of Barnard ' s current story as well. However, ideas and young women in pursuit of a superb education are still our strongest assets. As you leave Barnard, you may be assured that your Barnard education will serve you well. You have been equipped, as well as anyone can be, with the intellectual tools, the knowledge and the sensitivities to meet the complex challenges facing the world today. You go forward, as well, as a continuing member of the Barnard community. The Barnard family is large; not only the College itself, but also Barnard alumnae who have preceded you, continue to contribute to the Barnard experience and to support each other in their personal and professional endeavors. We hope you will do the same. You are a vital link in perpetuating the tradition which began nearly a century ago with someone ' s dream. You are the first class that I have seen through four years so I feel a special closeness to you. I wish for you lives of peace, happiness, good health and personal fulfillment. Sincerely, Ellen V. Futter President 9
