Personally — He has been my counselor, my boss and my friend. He has been someone for me to count on through both good and bad times and he has never failed to listen quietly and patiently. Professionally — He is an extremely creative and dedicated artist. He is not only a fine actor, but his performance of a music hall song is a unique experience for an audience. He is a superb director and both a witty and touching playwright. Kenneth Janes came to the United States and Yale University as a fellow with the Rockefeller Foundation. He arrived at Barnard College in 1962. As head of the Minor Latham Playhouse and Director of the Barnard College Theatre Company he has enriched the lives of everyone at Barnard. During the past twenty years he has conducted innumerable workshops and classes. He has directed over one hundred plays which have included one act plays, original works and classics. He has encouraged and assisted performances by many groups in the Barnard-Columbia community. What can I say about Kenneth Janes? Only that he has constantly given of himself to his students and to all of us at Barnard. On behalf of all of us, I thank him. Philip James Bailey DEANS AND PRESIDENTS 8 OF BARNARD COLLEGE Millicent Mcintosh Rosemary Park Martha Peterson 1947-1962 1963-1967 1967-1975 Most colleges start with something tangible: a gift of buildings, an endowment, or at least a tract of land. Barnard College started with nothing except that most irresistible and indestructable thing, an idea. That description, taken from Marian Churchill White ' s A History of Barnard College, captures the spirit of Barnard ' s special mission and identity. In 1889, Frederick A. P. Barnard turned his dream of equal education for women into a reality. Now, nearly one hundred years later, you and I are the benefactors of that dream. Of course, buildings, an endowment and a tract of land have become very much a part of Barnard ' s current story as well. However, ideas and young women in pursuit of a superb education are still our strongest assets. As you leave Barnard, you may be assured that your Barnard education will serve you well. You have been equipped, as well as anyone can be, with the intellectual tools, the knowledge and the sensitivities to meet the complex challenges facing the world today. You go forward, as well, as a continuing member of the Barnard community. The Barnard family is large; not only the College itself, but also Barnard alumnae who have preceded you, continue to contribute to the Barnard experience and to support each other in their personal and professional endeavors. We hope you will do the same. You are a vital link in perpetuating the tradition which began nearly a century ago with someone ' s dream. You are the first class that I have seen through four years so I feel a special closeness to you. I wish for you lives of peace, happiness, good health and personal fulfillment. Sincerely, Ellen V. Women ' s Studies Nancy Miller Chairperson Annette Baxter Annette Baxter ' s death this fall was a great shock and loss to the Barnard and Columbia community, as well as to the hundreds of other people whose lives she touched. Professor Baxter was a con- cerned, intelligent, warm, charming in- dividual, committed to education and devoted to her students. She was always available to talk with students, encourage and inspire them, and have them challenge and develop their ideas and thoughts. As a great innovator at Barnard, Pro- fessor Baxter helped establish the Women ' s Studies program, and chaired the American Studies department. Her com- mitment to education was not to be ex- ceeded and her enthusiasm for her sub- jects pervaded the classes. I recall that each week, when our American Studies seminars officially ended at 4 o ' clock, the discussions unofficially continued in cor- ridors, libraries, at dinner tables and in homes. Professor Baxter always welcomed us into her office to clarify thoughts, gain a better understanding of a book or article we had read, or even chat. Whether we knew her from class, or became acquainted with her through committees, or perhaps through the Bulletin or Spectator, she always made herself accessible in whatever ways she could. Annette Baxter ' s involvement at Bar- nard was extensive. While teaching at Bar- nard for over twenty years, she was in- volved in over fifty committees such as Columbia ' s Bicentennial Committee, the Committee on the City, the Women ' s Center Executive Committee, the Barnard-Columbia Committee of American Historians, the Advisory Coun- cil of University Seminars, and numerous others. Her versatility, the personal interest she took in her students, her love of knowledge, her concern that we challenge ourselves and strive to meet our potential, and her guidance and warmth are just a few of the qualities and characteristics which cause us to miss such a dear friend and mentor, Annette Baxter. — Stacey Blaustein 71 Campus anil Classroom 73 Hv« i7bles Sl4ft  vea.ls. . - .-fou ' -fire dri lis- . - ypiw -Ute m U-h o ajS ' -Hv% — ctoiKi oL rtcirt oKice iviOKi-H i — • oiling OL?Fof l ed, in+r •svyea.-l pa n4- s , t. f«7 cIass. . . . • i ' ife A-f 4i e Pi l? . . . -forgcffi -Hue fy hax. oytn — 3 3 ' fc Ti Tk, -five iia -rt e vrKPt-m - - - -flue WC ' s4 Eh d - . . -K e TViir d ' PhAse - - - -frieVid Wii pjs -thoA- will I 3L- ' S-| ' -frxevc --- -fV e lot liMe i? c f Mei j York ' Cii - -- ' • J Y -X ax3L c t - Oa z-s. . . . loa : v7r -fc«o+b xl j +e s Ki rTst lcecl ' brc lcc« eieva,4i: rs ... t j yiaA i Sft ire ... ir o hcrf wrt+etr. . , woicl iiTg Genera. One forum for debate is Model United Nations Conferences, where students represent dif- ferent countries in intercoUegiated simula- tions of the UN. Other simulation con- ferences, such as the Model Organization of American States are also attended. A second forum for debate and discussion is the CWA seminar and lecture series, where students can discuss and hear opinions from promi- nent journalists, historians, statesmen, and other significant individuals. The Magazine also sponsors several open readings every semester, and hosts readings by faculty members and professional writers. From Left to Right: Kathryn Fernquist-Bosco, Nina Solomon, Michele Shapiro. The Columbia-Barnard Course Guide The Columbia-Barnard Course Guide pro- vides students with the information necessary for choosing courses. With tuition costs as high as they are, it is important that the student be aware of what is open to her, and that she make an intelligent choice from among the alternatives. The Course Guide provides this information through reviews based on comments of students who have taken the courses. The reviews also contain a set of numerical ratings based on a 1-10 scale which quantifies these com- ments. The last piece of information the Course Guide has is contained in our grade charts. These charts show how an instructor grades his or her course. This mix of qualitative and quantitative information provides the student with all the facts she needs to make her four years at Barnard as meaningful and worthwhile as possible. Right to Left: J. Political Activities — Straw Vote, Republican Primary, April, 1952 MIND MIND MIND MIND MIND Mil The Barnard Bulletin Building on the framework of previous years, the Barnard Bulletin had one of its best years ever in 1983-84. Staff member- ship increased as the paper continued to grow and reach out to more of the Barnard community. The depth of information pro- vided by the paper increased as the news focus widened from not only reporting on the events that happened, but also to ex- plaining why they happened. The features and reviews section continued to provide students with an informative and entertain- ing guide to the campus and city around them. The editorial board remained strong, dedicated, and creative, and was the vital factor in the improvement of the paper. The future looks good for the Barnard Bulletin, as only one senior left the board when the editorship changed hands from Amelia A. Hart to Barby Kogon in the spr- ing semester. Bulletin remains the source of information for the Barnard campus. From Left: Sarah Morgenthau, Wendy Dubow, Barby Kogon, Amelia A. Hart, Hibi Pendleton, Maya Marin. The Barnard Bulletin l,U M IKK. More recently, members from the club have been raising funds, and with the assistance of private donations have succeeded in establishing a new course offered by Columbia Univer- sity ' s History Department: 20th Century Ukraine. Newsflash: According to the latest field of scientific research, the amount of informa- tion in the universe is a constant. The theory predicts a cancelling of information due to the discovery of Information Mechanics. We are hoping it will get rid of Vogon poetry. You say you never heard of Vogon poetry? See, it works! If you want more information on us before it all cancels out, we do actually have a lending library, a yearly convention in FBH (not in April) and other activities now and then, including a — we regret that this information has been cancelled. The Columbia University Women ' s Archery Team is undefeated this year in both dual meets (4-0) and tournament competition. In dual meets no competitor from the op- posing team has managed to break into the top 3 places. The individual competition was much rougher at the Eastern Indoor FITA tournament (the major fall tournament in the east), but Columbia ' s depth showed in its first place team finish. Columbia competes in local dual competition under the auspices of the Metropolitan Collegiate Archery League, which consists of teams from Lehman College, Baruch Col- lege, Steven ' s Institute of Technology, and Queensborough Community College. In their first competition of the year the Columbia women took the first three places. Julie Turner B ' 85, 1983 New York State collegiate champion, led the lions with a 226 (of a possible 30O). ' The Eastern Indoor Tournament held in Reading, Pennsylvania was the first chance for the Lions to face teams outside of the league since the Collegiate Nationals last May in Colorado. The individual competition was dominated by James Madison (1982 na- tional champions), but Columbia ' s depth won it a gold medal for the women ' s team. The team was led by Julie Turner (450 of a possible 600), with Leila Lau scoring 417, Kim Lee (407), and Cathy Doviak (383). That ' s how Beth Knobel, who works for the New York Times, feels. As a cam- pus correspondent, she reports to the newspaper various items of interest concerning Barnard. Although Beth began slowly when she first received the job, today she has more freedom in her writing. The longer I have the job the more I learn what I can do with it. Beth writes on such diverse topics as women ' s issues, real estate, and basketball. The New York Times is really an exciting place to work, Beth enthusiastically adds. Beth has been actively involved in journalism for quite some time. From January to September of 1983 she served as News Editor for the Columbia Spectator. She resigned, she says, to have more time to freelance, study, and be with . friends. She had previously worked on the Spectator as a I reporter and as night editor, learning how to deal with peo- ple and run a newspaper. In addition, Beth has worked for t The Villager and The Credit Union News. Last summer she worked as a paid intern at the Ladies Home Journal. Beth has obviously spent much time and effort in the field of journalism during her years at Barnard. According to Beth, when things are important to you, you don ' t mind working ifor them. Nora Giessen English For Lisa Maxwell, being involved was never a problem. As President of McAC, an organization providing students of the Barnard Columbia community with a multitude of diverse social events, Lisa ' s main goal is to get students involved in the campus to remind them that fun is as important as study- ing. Lisa began her freshman year as a commuter knowing no one and feeling isolated. I thought that the only way to enjoy myself and get the most out of school was to become in- volved. I began with McAC. I was elected head of the Com- muter Action Committee in my sophomore year and con- tinued with McAC through all four years of college. Lisa feels the most difficult problem at Barnard is getting students to participate in activities. Often one may end up running a one-woman show. Meeting people and keeping Bar- nard students active helps motivate Lisa and make her job enjoyable. According to Lisa, McAC is important because the apathy at Barnard may discourage students. I feel that McAC pro- vides students with opportunities to get involved. We try to engulf all aspects of Mcintosh life in an effort to enrich a stu- dent ' s college experience. Despite all her hard work, Lisa en- joys her job. Although you can not help everyone, if one out of every 100 students enjoys herself, I feel I ' ve done something worthwhile. It makes me happy. Since then That Motown Band, made up of ten members playing old songs from Motown, has performed all over cam- pus creating a large following. The first rehearsal was pandemonium, Sue remembers. No one knew what to do. I couldn ' t even turn on the mike! After many rehearsals the band received their first gig in Johnson Hall. Sue was so nervous that she lost her voice. A band member had to get me drunk. I sounded like Bonnie Tyler. Besides vocals, Su McCarthy also does the costuming and makeup for the group. She claims that she and Sue are just two girls who like to get up and get crazy. Su feels that part of the reason the group is such a success is that there ' s no way you can have a bad time dancing to Motown! As for the group ' s name. Sue claims that after their first show everyone was saying Did you hear that Motown Band? Someone sug- gested the name and the band adopted it unanimously. Both Su(e)s remember one of their most exciting gigs when half the band escaped from security. Some members in the band decided to scale the Mcintosh gate instead of going around. Security spotted them and chased them into Mcin- tosh. They ran over to the stage, grabbed their instruments and started playing. The cops never found them. Some problems may arise for the group ' s future because many members are graduating this year. However, Sue is not worried. Whatever happens, all roads will lead back to TMB. After consulting various professors and deans, Bea scheduled the first meeting of what was to be called the Elizabeth Cady Stanton Pre-Law Society. With the assistance of Dean Esther Rowland and the enthusiasm of other Barnard students including Helen Catsichtis, Lucianna Locorotondo and Christine Papamichael, the E.C.S. Pre-Law Society was formed and chartered by Undergrad to provide focus to pre-law students. Some of the functions of tbe club, according to Christine, Vice-President, are to provide information to pre-law students con- cerning the LSAT and law school applications, present various types of legal professions, and improve students ' relationships with faculty, deans and alumnae in order to establish contacts and expand interests. Lucy, Treasurer of the club, described the types of events the club has sponsored. She said that in order to learn more about the dif- ferent angles of a legal profession, panels were scheduled with Bar- nard alumnae who have attended law school. The panels are very important for students planning to go to law school. It ' s an oppor- tunity to ask questions and learn from someone else ' s experiences in law school and the legal profession. Helen, Publicity Director, was surprised, like Bea, that a pre-law club did not exist. Helen feels the club is vital in helping students make choices regarding law school. I was not sure if I should go to law school. But, after attending the various panels of alumnae and law students, I am sure that law school is the correct route for me. Bea, Christine, Helen and Lucy are responsible for the current success of the E.C.S. Pre-Law Society. Although they are all graduating seniors, they are not worried about the club ' s future. As Bea says, Although the four of us are graduating, I am confident that our successors will continue our newly founded tradition. Karen Lesley Marie Panton Sociology Varsity Tennis Team Christina M. Orientation is traditionally a student ' s first in- troduction to campus life, serving as a bridge between leaving home and entering the world of college. Full of parties, academic events and trips throughout New York City, Orien- tation is usually remembered by students as the best week ever experienced at college. Georgia worked with the Columbia College and the School of Engineering coordinators to plan the program that in- troduced 1,800 new students to the Columbia University j vicinity. Georgia and the other two coordinators supervised I 30 committee members who did the actual planning for the program. Georgia says the most difficult part of her work was her conscious effort not to do the planning. She wanted to help organize the parties and events yet understood that her job was to supervise the committee ' s work. Georgia remembers the good times and the not-so-good times of Orientation. She says she enjoyed herself and feels successful in her efforts. There were problems however. As Georgia says, Any time the interests of three different schools must be served, there are bound to be difficulties. The coordinators disagreed and argued causing her relation- ship with them to be varied from day to day. Although she had fun, it was a 24-hour job lasting from January to August. Georgia looks back on Freshman Orientation 1983 and considers it the best summer I have ever spent. There are lingering rememberances as freshmen continue to recognize her and tell her how much they enjoyed Freshman Orientation. Laurie A. Silbersweig Anthropology Pamela H. In this position Aroza stands up for students because of a sense of responsibility. She feels she can represent students ' views and can utilize her position to change unfair circumstances. Aroza stresses principles when making decisions. As Aroza says, Making a decision has to do with principles; principles govern my thinking. Without principles and standards for making decisions, one can not be fair. Aroza also stresses the importance of positive growth in the Student Government Association. The officers of Student Government must keep the wheels turning or face stagnation. Each year more and more must be accomplished; there must be constant growth. Aroza feels her most significant endeavor while at Barnard is the opening of the Barnard Student Store. As Vice- President of Student Activities, Aroza worked during her junior year, with the other board members of Undergrad to open the store. Barnard has recognized it as a viable entity, she says. The store has helped in many ways to reaffirm Bar- nard ' s identity. Students can now buy t-shirts that say BARNARD instead of COLUMBIA. Barnard is going through a transition; the student store has helped make that transition smoother. Aroza feels good about graduating. She feels there is enough talent to carry on anything she has left undone and feels she will leave Barnard with an even stronger Student Government Association. Psychology Wendy A. With the recent advent of co-education at Columbia, Barnard has had to deal with such issues as mergers and the identity of the college as a whole. Avis Hinkson is one of the two student representatives to the Board of Trustees. She ran for the position out of con- cern for the possibility of the merger between Barnard and Columbia. Avis was elected to the two year position in her sophomore year. At that time, the major issues concerning the Board were the consortium of the Barnard and Columbia Physical Education Departments and the possibility of keep- ing Barnard dormitories open during winter break. As a representative to the Board of Trustees, Avis com- municates students ' concerns to the Trustees. Although the student representative does not have voting power. Avis is able to voice her opinion and that of the student body. In this way, the Trustees are alerted to students ' wants and concerns • that may have otherwise remained unknown. The position has been an exciting one for Avis. It has opened me up to seeing the way decisions are made. I have seen how a college this size is run. Avis is currently a Resident Assistant in 49 Claremont. This position has been invaluable for her in learning students ' feel- ings about Barnard. God bless the Empire State Building! 271 Dear Class of 1984, There might be one among you who recalls the limerick I delivered at your Orientation Convocation on August 28, 1980: ' 84 is beginning to loom; Mr. Orwell foresaw it with gloom: You ' d each be a parrot, Regardless of merit — George was a prophet of doom! With nary a tinge of regret, I can see that the man was all wet! Let ' s dance and let ' s sing As you each do your thing — Your class will be the best yet! It is now obvious that I am a better forecaster than Orwell, for you are an unruly group of independent thinkers and a wonderful class! And I think I know where he went wrong: When Orwell predicted our fate. He was wrong on more than the date! If we ' re ever controlled, I predict we ' ll behold BIG SISTER as head of the state! What I really wish for each of you is an active, useful life, full of new challenges and accomplishments, but not so busy that you can ' t come back to see us often. Affectionately, 272 Barbara S. Schmitter Vice President for Student Affairs
